I’d also change them killing Black Mask to Harley horrifically fusing his mask to his face in an act of revenge that simultaneously:
1. Reminds us she’s still kind of psychotic
2. Justifies the film’s R-rating
3. Keeps Sionis around for sequels
4. Is pretty much what happens to the character in the comics but with a twist making him specifically hate Harley over anyone else (so he could show up in Gotham City Sirens or The Suicide Squad or Harley & Ivy or whatever movie you want to bring Harley back in as a recurring antagonist).

Well, if we're to believe the rumors, that's pretty much what they originally shot during initial production on the movie. They changed Black Mask's death during reshoots.💀 Originally the diamond was also a usb drive.
YES!! Killing off Sionis was the thing that really made me dislike the ending. I always thought having his mask fused to his face (whether it was the grenade that did it or how you put it) would've been much better and not feel like a waste of Black Mask

Another argument for the Stephanie Brown character is her history with Black Mask. In the comics, Black Mask killed Stephanie Brown during her run as Robin and her surviving in this story would be a cool nod and switch-up.

Honestly I'm not a fan of either of them being used for this movie, for the same reason stated in the video; it means that none of them can be used in a movie for a long time, and they both have a lot to offer.

This is one of my biggest problems with the newer DC movies. They did the same with Jimmy Olsen (...and lex Luthor you could say) -just throw a name on a throw away character just to do it. they kind of did it with Zazz too.
I feel like it was less of a thing with Zzsaz. He was just a dfar more functional Zzsaz than we're used to, as if it was earlier in his career.
@@nrnrn999 exactly. Zzsaz at least was a character, -he had characterization. I dont mind if a character is changed (starlord, loki, aqua man) so much if they actually have character and arent just an extended cameo like Cassandra was here (or an actual cameo like Jimmy Olsen)
Zzsaz was WAY scarier than mask. Everything mask 'does' is just bombast. I think thematically it was an intent to show the impotence of the patriarchy, but... Shrug.

The musical number serves to show how Harley mentally disassociates when physically abused and helps explain how she copes with trauma. The moment Roman first smacks her, she goes into a happy place full of singing & dancing, where the violence is rendered as a dance between her and her attacker. The abuse can be framed as fun and affectionate. This is how she coped with being Joker's girl.
I personally appreciated that musical number as a wonderful touch to showing the damaged psyche of Harley Quinn
Harley uses nonlethal force on every police officer, beanbags & glitter bombs. It's not until she fights the baddies after the bounty that she begins employing far more violent and potentially lethal force.
This made little sense to me in terms of Harley's characters motivation, but I can understand why a studio might shy away from showing a shootup and massacre of policemen--also, it pivots Harley more as a chaotic neutral, adorably lovable anti-hero instead of full on villain for an audience--but still doesn't quite track for character consistency, unless you argue without anyone's protection she is too afraid to make full-out enemies of the Gotham PD when she already has enemies who want her dead from all of Gotham's underworld.
The purpose for Cassandra's amicability and bond with Harley is because it serves to underscore the theme of female solidarity: Cassandra uplifts & empowers Harley when she is most vulnerable, when everyone is literally out for and against her, and sees her as an admirable independent force untethered or identified by her association to any male figure. All the women are better, and better off, when they help each other and stand together throughout the film. The girls bond, Harley being a semi-positive and fairly kind mentor figure lacking in Cassandra's life and Cassandra providing respect and camaraderie to the isolated and unloved Harley, but the female bond and Harley's feelings of independence are tested when she decides to betray Cassandra out of self preservation in seeking the protection once more of a powerful, abusive man. Cassandra ultimately serves to cement Harley's mindset of girls sticking together and truly emancipating herself from the oppression and abuse of the men in her life, brought about by the support and assistance of the other women of the film.
And while I never had a connection or deep familiarity with Cassandra Cain prior to Birds of Prey, I always just assumed that the ending of the film implied that it would be an alternative origin story wherein Harley would teach Orphan her skills as she took her under her wing. (Additionally, it wasn't her parents fighting at the apartment complex but foster parents--implying her parents are incarcerated or otherwise deemed unfit to care & rear Cassandra.)

Yep, this is spot-on. The glitter bomb thing does make sense in terms of "minimizing enemies." She's on a mission for Roman specifically because she doesn't have protection anymore, so it makes sense that she'd want to minimize making additional enemies along the way. Particularly since cops tend to take cop-killing extremely seriously.

I kid you not, I was leaving the theater after seeing this movie for the first time (opening day!) thinking that Stephanie Brown would have been a WAY better choice for the spunky-kid-with-the-plot-coupon role. It was a pretty fun movie to watch but as a batfamily fan, that writing choice really did rub me the wrong way. Your take on it here is super solid, tho, and I was looking forward to seeing if you'd be making a video on this. Score!
Okay, even if I just stick to your idea of ONLY replacing Cassandra Cain, there is a far better choice for a replacement: Charlotte Gage-Radcliffe, aka Misfit. Most people haven't heard of her, but she's a member of the Birds of Prey who went by Batgirl for a short time. She is young, and can be around the age of Cassandra in the film; she is the only daughter of a single mother who lived in a slum, which means it makes sense for her to live on the streets and desire someone to look up to show her a better life (introducing Harley Quinn); she also has the power of teleportation, which means it would actually make sense for her to be able to fight off a trained killer like Victor Zsasz; she is also known to be impulsive and reckless but optimistic, making her a sensible addition for the role they've created. Misfit works better than Spoiler, she just does.
I'm not familiar with these characters but I think this change preserves the thematic significance/character development given to Harley Quinn in the Birds of Prey movie.
Walking out of the theater I told my mom "they really should have just called her Stefanie Brown" I'm glad to see someone thought the same thing- tho honestly I wouldn't have minded if the name was the only change.
They could say that this Cassandra used the name after bumping into someone else(who she thought was really cool or something). Simple way to get out of that mess.

greywolf I saw that as Harley having an LSD-style hallucination because they drugged her before that number started. It would explain the tripping lighting and the dreamlike pacing of the number.

visually it was like she went to a happier place where she’s dancing and singing instead of the reality of what’s happening

When I first saw the scene, I thought it was suppose to represent Harley's mind viewing Black Mask as the perfect rebound guy as she subconsciously connects the way Black Mask abuses her to how the Joker showed his "love" for her. Keep in mind that in this film, Joker was the one who dumped Harley, so Harley likely never really learned how unhealthy and abusive Joker's form of "love" really was. It got me really excited since I thought the film was going to have Harley go on a journey of self-discovery and learn just how unhealthy the "love" she's been conditioned into believing really is. Saddly the film does nothing else with this scene nor does it even try to have Harley develop as a character or talk about the abusive relationship she was stuck in for months if not years.
In universe, I think she was dissociating. On a meta level; for the trailer.
Another sub for Cassandra I've seen brought up is Misfit, who appeared in the BoP comic pre-New 52. She has teleportation powers, though, so we'd either have to eliminate that or work it into the story.
Never thought of Stephanie fulfilling Cass's role. In our podcast ep on the movie, we pitched the idea of Harper Row since her background, as a street kid who resorts to stealing, already fits, but really like the idea of Spoiler and how she fits in thematically with what was missing from the end.

If we would’ve had Stephanie instead maybe in the end it could’ve revealed that she meets up and reports to Batman everything that happened, showing that Batman put her up to making up this fake persona and getting to know Harley. Idk ik it wouldn’t really work and would ruin all the character development we would’ve gotten for her but I feel having Batman incorporated w all this would’ve been way cooler
I haven’t seen the movie, but I thought by “The Batgirl Problem” you meant the travesty that Barbara Gordon is not in a Birds of Prey movie. I honestly wanted a BoP movie with a post-paralysis Barbara and a blonde Dinah, maybe Huntress or someone else, but NO HARLEY QUINN.
The fact they completely erased Oracle from this film really annoys me.
I'm kinda of in the same boat. Clearly, people liked the Harley Quinn character in SS and so they created a movie around the character. But I would have much rather seen an actual BOP movie than a Harley Quinn movie.

Idk the movie was fun but I felt that character development was lacking in some parts. Like all the women are on screen together for a few minutes and don’t interact that much. Yet as soon as they start fighting together they working together and cooperating perfectly like they’ve been friends for years. It felt a bit unearned. And they never have any of the women bond with each other over their similarities like having Montoya and Harley bond over having bad breakups and working to gain respect in their separate fields. They didn’t have Harley and Canary bond over being controlled by powerful and mentally unstable men in Black Mask and Joker. They also introduce some conflict with Montoya and Canary over her distrusting cops but they never explore it or resolve that tension. I felt there was lots of wasted opportunity there.

It would've been better if they paired the girls in groups of two. The better parts were with Harley and the kid together and Harley and Dinah, but for the most part Montoya and Helena are kinda looser ends. They make it work but it could've been stronger.

You're right about the opportunity cost, but the solution seems pretty messy. It does establish a comic book character, but at the cost of needing to develop *another* costumed hero. The hyena option has legs, but honestly idk why they didn't just make a whole new original character. The only problem we had with CC was opportunity cost, the character itself was perfectly fine. Just give her a different name.

Putting Stephanie also puts a Batgirl (sort of) on the team. Plus, they could totally have Cass and Steph team up later.
That bothered me at first when they used Cassandra Cain because she was once Batgirl in the comics. However in the comics, I don't like how the first Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) somehow became Batgirl again and Cassandra Cain had to give up the Batgirl mantle.
It would have been a while before we saw the real Cassandra Cain even if they didn't misuse her name here.
Pattinson Batman is in Year One right now, and if that seperate universe does manage to make it to the batfam era, I'm pretty sure Cain was the second to last core member to be added before Damian and the off-core rush (Beacon, Blue-Bird, ect)

That's one of the best parts of Cassandra. People will assume she's overpowered for this feat but don't realize that while she's a top fighter in DC she struggles with things as simple as reading. While Batman can do everything Cassandra excels at one thing more than everyone, and struggles with things like being a Detective. Like throwing all your skill points into one category in a video game.

Great change as usual. I had the same thought about Cassandra not being perfect for this film. Stephanie would have been a better choice, and you worked her into the story in an amazing way.

Cassandra Cain's interpretation was probably my biggest beef with the movie. I was like, no that is not Batgirl.
To paraphrase an article or two I've read: this movie didn't want to show women being traumatized, but how they dealt with trauma. The dance scene was Harley dissociating.

Stephanie Brown is one of my favorite Batman universe characters. I wouldn't have wanted to see her in this train wreck of a movie. But I concede she fits better than Cassandra Cain, daughter of the assassin David Cain and Lady Shiva. I am currently involved in a fan film dedicated to Stephanie Brown, and hopefully we'll do her justice. We'll see.

I gotta say, i really liked Margot Robbie as Harley. She was the reason i watched the movie and I got everything i wanted. The movie wasn't a masterpiece but i was just expecting to see a okay movie with this again awesome actress who plays this role amazingly.

I do like Margot as Harley Quinn and while I found the film to be decent overall, I think Harley and the Birds of Prey deserve much better than just a 6/10 film. The Harley Quinn tv show is fantastic and really shows just how great a Harley Quinn lead story can be.

You lost me at your pitch of future Cassandra Cain being "another super crazy mercenary in Gotham killing lots of people that the BoP have to deal with" because thats yet again absolutely missing the mark with the character.
And before some casual scrap digger tries to say this had been done in the comics before: yes, it was. And to say it wasn't appealing to the fans and readers of the character is an understatement.
Birds of Prey is an okay movie at best. Perhaps to me the butchering of Cassandra's character is what kept from being as decent as being preached, but even that it had plenty of problems that people are willing to ignore because its so "fantabolous".
Honestly, I'd rather there not be a Birds of Prey at all, as the rest of the cast were supporting Harley's narrative, and being barely anything more with their screentime. If anything, swap them for the Gotham City Sirens and it'd still fit far better. Then perhaps use the hyena plot, which I totally would've been down for it.
Yes! Like, I see so many people point out that Cassandra was not comic accurate, yet be just as misinformed about her; I haven't even seen a single person mention how her mental disabilities were completely washed away. Cass being butchered by other writers is kinda apart of her legacy by this point: How "One Year Later" treated her, getting written out of existence until Batman and Robin Eternal, and now this movie.
I think they brought in Cassandra because she's Asian. I think they should have used Lady Shiva instead of Zsasz so all the villains wouldn't be men. And it also gives more to Cassandra.

I would like to know that myself he didn't seem funny he just seemed like he's trying to be Tony Stark but he lacked certain things about him
I’m always sad for what could have been when I watch these videos.
My biggest concern prior to the release and greatest complaint after its release was the way they failed the character of Cassandra Cain. A master class assassin who becomes possibly the most capable member of the Batfamily. It was a huge disservice, especially knowing that we mayn’t see her done justice in future films.

Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain are too of my favorite DC characters, and this one change would do them both justice. Cassandra Cain was my only major problem with BoP. I wish this was the movie we got.
You know, I actually had the exact same thought and potential solution about this issue and I feel very validated that someone else has put it out there in the ether. Sadly, I felt that the studio heads just wanted any Asian character for the sake of marketing and just picked Cass from the extremely limited options found in Gotham-based, Asian, and female vigilante. Steph is definitely the character that would gel well with the archetype they put Cass into this movie and it might have even been less cliche as they would have had an actual backstory to draw from.
Using Stephanie Brown (or even Harper Row) instead of Cassandra Cain is brilliant! Nice!
I didn’t even know that was her when I watched it. The character is ruined if she doesn’t have her traumatic past. What if they did Batman without his parents ever mentioned.
Hey Nando, I recently watched a video from troyoboyo17 where he also did a rewrite of Birds of Prey. In it, he also swapped out Cassandra Cain for another lesser known Bat Family member, but only this time its Bluebird, aka Harper Row. There's an opportunity cost in using Stephanie as we may never get her as Spoiler who goes against her own criminal father, which is an interesting story all on its own.
The fact that you haven't been snapped up by one studio or another to mastermind their cinematic universes just shows they're not serious about actually succeeding. XD

I honestly stopped watching when he decided to just leave Tim Drake off the list.
100% agree they messed up by choosing Cassandra for this movie. Stephanie would be much, much better - you are right, as always. But I'm pretty sure they chose Cassandra for one thing only - diversity.
