The Tesla Owners manual states that the tires should be at 42 psi cold. Higher pressures that happen after the car is running are expected.
No matter, this is a great summary of the things you can do to make your car go longer between charges.

I know living in cold area most of my adult life everyone realize you've up about 5 over the standard during the cold snaps!
1. Chill mode
2. Turn off heat or AC
3. Keep the car clean
4. Tire pressure
5. Driving habit (speed, use of brake)
6. Less weight in the car
7. Remove roof racks
8. use aero wheel caps
9. Keep your Tesla plugged in

I like the AC and I live where we get snow. So Definitely get super cold here.
From my experience the biggest range savers are chill mode and minimizing speed and fast acceleration on uphill roads
@@zerokool-2058 , the batteries on tesla will be warming up while it’s cold outside. So be ready for loosing a charge if you parking it outside.
That’s why I call all teslas “calculators”
Basically: keep it inflated and clean, then turn off all the features and drive like your grandma.
Buy a car and dont use any options available with it lol what a bargain .
May as well just buy a electric bike instead .

Forgot to mentioned 2 important ones.
1. turn off sentry mode if you're home.
2. Turn off "cool cabin" option
Those 2 will drain the battery super fast.
Turn off century mode if you’re in a garage maybe
2 day old Tesla with 34 miles, picked it up at the dealership with 4 miles on it
Glad the first thing I did was turn on sentry mode as 2 md night in driveway some one knock down our Christmas decorations tried to break the windshield of our Chevy avalanche and smash the windshield of our model three. Thanks to ring , sentry and a tree field cam had the suspects and provided to police and they were known and were caught days later. They took off on a bike that was stolen the day before and other added to their path of destruction.
I'm in a model 3 taking a road trip from San Francisco to Las Vegas and some of the most practical advice is to switch acceleration to chill mode (accelerates like a normal car) and steering to comfort (steering is more softer). Use cruise control on the freeway to take advantage of adaptive cruise control. The battery will eat up less.
After six months with my MYLR I just use it without any concern for range. Plug it in when I get home, could not be easier. And I don't miss gas stations one bit.
Buy a Tesla, it will change your life for the better and improve your neighbors a bit also. Cheers!
I'm with you. I'm two months in and I've just decided to enjoy the car. I enjoy seeing what other people do and the people who dig into the numbers, but I just roll with it.

I’m on day 2 with my Model Y Performance and range anxiety is definitely there. I hope I will be able to overcome it soon. Apart from that I absolutely love it!
Update: 2 weeks
/800 miles of living with it and range anxiety is almost gone. Someone gave me a little neat trick. Always keep the display to show battery percentage rather than miles. Will stop you from constantly seeing the range drop and prevent range anxiety.
Update: 2 months
The MY Performance is extremely low, lower than it seems. I’ve bottomed out trying to get into a friend’s drive way and caught the bottom on some speed humps. The ride is also awful, I’m based in the UK where we have awful roads. The 21 inch alloys and low profile tyres are a nightmare. Apart from that all good.

On my 2021 Tesla Model 3 LR, it states 42 psi when cold. This is normal for all cars to have the recommended tire pressures on the door stated at cold operating temps. My tires go up to about 45 psi when heated up. During the Los Angeles summer, I might run them a pound or 2 less.

I alway increase my range by driving downhill everywhere I go, it may be a bit longer of a drive, but it's worth it. haha

I did the same. I’m in Hell now tho so I would highly advise going back uphill at some point.
Along with the cabin temp settings, window tint and the heat shield may give more range when the car is try to cool on hot days. Also slowing down so that you do not have come to a full stop and gain back speed will help if the traffic light and you can time it, I make a game out of it.

I haven't noticed any difference between chill mode and standard on my SR+ when it comes to efficiency/range. HOWEVER, I will say I don't usually accelerate very hard...standard doesn't make you accelerate faster by itself, it just gives you the ability to do so if you want. You don't have to. Although if you don't have much experience driving a Tesla, chill mode can help you learn to accelerate slower.
Also, btw, Telsa specifies that the tires should be at 42 PSI when cold. The advice you gave is completely contrary to what Tesla themselves say. The tires will go above 42 PSI after you've driven awhile, and that's normal.
You can never match the chill mode take off consistently using the standard mode. On an average trip how many times do you start and stop? Thats how many times you have to focus on how you press the accelerator. This is not even remotely close to how efficient the chill mode is. Simple math.

Question on Charging my Tesla model Y vehicle: Is it better for the battery and possibly giving us longer life by always letting the battery drop down to 20% and then charge the vehicle back up???
Note: I will be getting my new 2023 model Y in a week or two so learning about how to charge the vehicle.
I will be driving only short distances on most days being retired so for several days their will still be ample charge until it will reach 20%. So I may only need to charge up the model Y a few times a week. This said, I shouldn't have to keep the charger plugged in all the time.
What are your thoughts on this??

you have messed up the tire pressure thing multiple times now. mfg suggested PSI is cold. thats it. yes, towing, track use, offroading needs adjustment. but not daily commuting.

Yes! Automotive manufacturers, tire manufacturers and auto industry experts all advise that tire pressure should be checked when tires are cold. Do not drive them 20 or 30 minutes before checking. Thank you to the contact provider for corrected himself.
If you drive more than 4 miles your tire pressure will read 3-4 psi more than when it's cold. the door jamb label is for cold pressure
I bet Gjeebs doesn't know the tires sizes are rated for 50 to 51 psi max. 42 psi cold is just fine.

Start with Tesla brand roof sunshade screens. Add layer of space blanket trimmed to fit on top of sun screen. Tremendous insulation which helps in summer by : 1. reflecting inbound infra red heat from sun. 2. Insulates cabin from heat radiating off of hot glass onto your head. All this reduces energy demand frem AC to give it to more range.
Winter time energy savings: 1. Insulates warm cabin from cold glass roof surface which when left un-insulated dumps cold convected air onto your head.

As far as I understand manufacturer tire pressure recommendation are always "cold" so if tessy wants 42psi, you fill it to 42.

I would add that with 6k miles driven -tire rotation and alignment will give you higher range as well
Hi! I have 2021 tesla model 3 long range. I used level 1 all the time. However, is it possible to charge twice a day? Is it okay with the battery? I usually charge my car to work which is level 1 and when I got home I charge level 1 again.

The COLD tire pressure is the recommended pressure, not the warmed up pressure. A low pressure tire is A significantly higher blowout risk.

...and...how many supercharging stations, service centers and mobile service vehicles does Rivian provide? Few if any. You couldn't GIVE me one. Tesla is the leader, the only one to consider this decade. Although I've enjoyed long trips in my Tesla (nav directs me to superchargers which are welcomed breaks,,,without worrying where the next gas station might be), I appreciate your tips on extending range. thnx.

A lot better than what the usual car reviewers post with an experience driving cars for just a day or a week. The real and authentic piece of information like this, is hidden and somehow less popular when people make their decisions.
As another MYLR owner for 11 months/ 26,000 miles, I attest to all of the points mentioned in the video (pretty sure many others would too).
Such a glowing review for not understanding tire pressure.
I checked a document called “Model S Efficiency and Range” by Elon M and JB Straubel from May 9 2012. There is an interesting graph “Range vs. Constant Speed”in ideal conditions, for example no heating or cooling. The optimal range is in between about 17-26mph with a theoretical range of 450 miles. 55mph gives slightly above 300 miles.
hello, i have new model y, but noticing it does not charge to charge limit.
eg if limit is set to 60, it will charge to 57,58%

I learned from a Tesla service tech today that if you go to Climate on your phone app and press the power (on/off) button to select “on”, this will initiate the battery preconditioning.
Of Course chill mode does extend your range. if the car is 2023 or newer equipped with the Octo valve heat pump, then You save more energy using it than the seat / steering wheel heat. Tesla is very well insulated, so you can turn on the heat for a little bit and then turn if off for a while. It does not get cold right away like the other cars. Also a tip, you can just hold the temp (73 degrees) and it turns off, and then tap it when needed to turn back on or use voice commands.
Turning your screen brightness down has a good effect on battery life as well

Wild. I've always thought my gas cars (3 hybrids) ran better when they were clean. And now come to find out (via Gjeeves) this increases MPG/Electric efficiency. Cool.❤❤❤❤

I think all it does is warm the battery in cold climates. It helps with range, but I don't think it helps with overall cost if you're paying for electricity.
I drive 120 miles every day... 90% of this is highway... I live in Florida, should I charge every time to 80% or do you recommend, based on your experience, charging to 100%?
Also one tine I drove 50 miles per hour on the freeway and go 380 mile range

Question: Who comes up with the EPA range number, EPA or Tesla? How does that entity achieve that figure - using theory, or calculations based on the car’s metrics, or by driving the car? Assuming the answers are “EPA” and “driving the car” how is it EPA can achieve that distance but no one else can?

Drove a Prius 10+years before my new baby and sadly nothing new. All common sense.
It is similar to the Airlines, where more and more of the “budget” one even charge for carry on lol. This past summer, a large group was flying to Las Vegas and they took a budget airline with no carry-on or anything else. Now this wedding was planned in Seattle, and for all the guests flying in all of their luggage was going to be driven in on a truck.. this truck was also bringing stuff in for the wedding ceremony and reception and so they did the math for this and doing stuff. This method was saving them a very large amount of money.but all admitted that this was no way environmentally friendly, but was financially friendly lol I’ve watched a few of your videos, and they have been unbelievably great for me cleaning vehicles like cleaning the air-conditioning and other aspects seeing it on the screen makes it in so much easier but for this one was hoping for something new, and sadly did not find
Will a spoiler increase your mileage? I’ve heard it will only make a difference if you go over 70 mph.
Maybe if you get the one from unplugged performance which was wind tunnel tested other than that I doubt it

Sooo i have been looking for videos like these because i bought a 2018 Model 3 Long Range but im getting less than 200 miles!! Is that a serious problem or what? I live in Los Angeles. And there are 20” wheels on the car. No roof rack or anything external. Why am I getting such poor mileage? Please help!!
I'm in luck I guess because, maybe I'm weird .... OK I know I am but, I prefer the feeling of heated seats and a heated steering wheel over the entire cabin being warm. It just feels nicer for me. I do however use AC liberally as I live in an insanely hot climate. 😕
I have to say though that, for the majority of my driving, I'm not interested in range. The only time I care about range is on long road trips and even then only under certain circumstances. Still, your tips are useful for people whose usage model requires them to squeak out every mile possible.

I just got my model 3 but just be prepared for a potential battery repair after warranty ends for about $20k. I’m hoping prices fall by then because if they don’t then I’m going to sell my Tesla when my warranty runs out and either go back to used cheap ice vechile or lease another new Tesla
Aren't manufacturer recommended tire pressure for cold tire pressure and not operating pressure?
Is there anybody aware of the 12v battery causing an issue of not allowing the high voltage batteries enough range?
My thinking is if a 12 V battery is degraded and it takes more juice for the high voltage batteries to keep the 12v batt. charged up, would that take away from the range?
After 67k kilometres my car consistently beats the car's energy consumption figures by at least 10%. I use chill mode, and don't drive like I stole it - perhaps the same settings used for the EPA tests! 🙂
I just bought my model 3 and did the performance upgrade amd a different mag and wheel package.. these are all great points but at some point a person has ro be happy/content with what they have, etc. Theres such a huge difference between chill and sport mode for example. Just take care of a tesla, and itll all be good. A person cant make anything perfect.
I just ordered a Model Y Performance myself, so I’m on board the electric car train, but the thing about all this is you just don’t have to think about things like this so much with ICE cars. I can put whatever I want in my GTI and drive upwind or downwind in hot or cold temperatures and not give a single thought to how things like that affect how far I can go. Uphill driving, high speed, tire pressure, sure, but not things like the direction of the wind or how cold it is outside. EVs still have big problems to solve.
A/C on my ICEs increase the fuel consumption with 1% (Honda Civic) and 1,5% (Nissan Primera). Driving against the wind increase the fuel consumption with aprox. 2%-4%. Running the A/C system in an EV decrease the range with aprox. 10%; in a Model 3 LR parked, with A/C running for 15 minutes, the range has decreased with 5 km.
I run my Model S at 52 PSI and get 260Wh/Mi
Set cruse control
Also draft off larger vehicles, set flow distance down to 1 or 2 car lengths. I make sure they aren't a vehicle that will kick up rocks.

I’m triggered 😤 you said no one had a good answer for you on Twitter. The reason Tesla doesn’t hit their range in “real world” tests is because they test range different than most manufacturers (while still following epa guidelines) and those extra test cycles that Tesla does tend to be, well, generous. Also there’s about 20 mi of range below 0 mi. Edmunds retested their Teslas and drove them past zero and almost hit the rated range. Point is, the reason Teslas tend to not get their epa rated range has nothing to do with the quality of the batteries.
i drive that Indio grade daily in my MYP. i commute in from Blythe. I'm in the process of trying to figure out how to make my range last me the full trip. so far I have to charge going both ways. I'm too scared of running out of battery! I'm going to try some of these. it's way too hot through that desert to run without a/c on my afternoon commute in. doing the scheduled departure when i leave work in the morning... will this help me get a better charging speed? the Tesla supercharger in Indio is HORRIBLE and takes forever. I'm tired of sitting there for 20+ mins every morning just to get enough mileage to get home. I'm still green when it comes to this. any other advice?
Probably the best thing you could do is a get a set of 19” wheels. That will bring the range up a lot. That indio supercharger is awful. I’ve been there
If I drive obeying all speed limits, I am getting exactly the milage shown on "battery indicator" eg. 16,6 Wh consumption.
My problem is that we do not have general speed limit on our highways, so my average consumption is rather higher.
Contrary to popular belief regen braking is actually less efficient than coasting. Regen is definitely more efficient than friction braking. However, you should never use any braking at all whether it be friction or even regen braking if you are trying to maximize efficiency.
Hmmm interesting point. I wonder if not having to replace brakes as often would help overall in cost of ownership being cheaper
@@Gabri3lRocha I never use the friction brakes in my Tesla at all. I should never have to replace the brake pads because they simply never get used at all.
@@LearningFastyour comment had me do some research for an hour last night and found that yes you are right both are inefficient. Not sure if I’m right here but I guess overall regen is more efficient than coasting to a stop. regen loses energy to heat both while recharging the battery and then again using that power. The difference with coasting is that friction and heat is stopping the car and none of that kinetic energy is being stored away and instead just wasting it

When you have the Tesla plugged in and you put 80% but you leave it plugged. Does it go keep it at 80% and basically not charging ?
Yea it just holds at 80 and stops charging it may fall a few percent and then it will kick back on
My question is, will a car that's dirty get better efficiency when going down wind when compared to a clean one? Or should I maybe just leave the back half of my car dirty?
Probably not. You're still traveling faster than the wind, so it's still better to have a clean car. I wonder if stuff like ceramic coats can help even more, haha.

Engineers put painstaking amounts of effort into reducing weight and people drive around with trash, golf bags, half-full water bottles, etc. without even a thought, SMH

I wish you can turn regen completely off, regen slows you down so much to the point you cant make enough energy and since youve slowed down so much you need to get right back on the accelerator and constantly stay on it using a lot of energy

Hello . Just picked up a model y and I didn’t wanna charge it during peak hours so I charged to 90% on Friday and didn’t charge again until Monday and the battery was depleted to 3% . I realize now after my friend yelled at me that this is very bad charging practice but my question is did I ruin anything by doing that ? The mY only has 800 miles . I definitely learned my lesson now but hoping I didn’t ruin anything?? Please reply and help
Try charging as soon as you reach 20%
Actually, simply opposite, dirty surface increases range. Similar to gulf ball, rough surface damages the laminar flow and reduce the low-pressure zone behind your car
Thx Gjeebs, your definitely right about the EPA. I have one to add which I’m not sure it really works. On your app or screen, set your battery level to the lowest option (50%) when you know your car will sit a few days & it’s suppose to preserve the battery. Give it a try, let mr know your thoughts 🤷🏽

Correction Recommended Tire pressures are Cold, which is displayed on tire pressure placard. Best method is to check and set the pressures in the garage or shaded area where both sides of the car have not been exposed to the sun after car has been sitting overnight before you drive.

@@Gjeebs I think they secretly listen (not to you specifically, but overall) though because of the competition and no one wants to put out a bad product. Example changes.. Double windows for noise reduction. They got rid of the piano black. Labels on the buttons to open the door etc. They do listen; however, each item they add I believe it brings up the price and there's a certain price they must keep it at for optimal profit.
Hud is the dumbest thing ever. Why would you need a hud when you have all that information on the screen
The interior quality is good ! I came from a 2019 X5 and I was very anxious that the MY would be unbearable in terms of quality…… But I needn’t have been anxious, the MY is pretty good !

With v11 it seems it’s not possible to only turn on the seat heating without the AC turns on.
I know! That’s the worst! I liked before how I could just click the heated seat
