  • I break out a tool from 1971 to help fix the damaged threads on the pinion gear in the abandoned 1956 Chevy build. This classic Tri Five Chevy project car is moving along. After finally fixing the pinion gear threads, we need to finish the original parking brake system refurbishment. Then we can focus on wheels, tires & aftermarket floor pan replacement.

    Thank you for posting the thread restorer instructions. It is now in my files.

    The metal is so hard it doesn’t file too easily. If you only need to remove a couple of spots, I just touch it off with an angle grinder because the threads usually stick a small amount through the nut.

    Richard I used an inch pound needle type torque wrench for final setting to spec. It takes alot of to crush that crush sleeve, since it was set from axle plant. Always great following your projects!

      That’s really what I should be doing but I think we’re going to just run this one & see what happens. I think it’ll be ok. Thanks for watching & commenting as always.

      Get a new nonlocking nut cut 3 groves across the threads use as a thread chaser

      It's not a torque wrench setting to set up the pinion. You need a dial indicator to measure the preload.
      That's the only way to know for sure... And of course you need to do this with the axle shafts removed.
      You can come close by tightening it back to the way it was.. but it's still a guess.

    Teddy Roosevelt taught me to keep hubs from turning so i made and keep a pair of 3/16" × 3" x 30" aluminum flatstock in the garage with 9/16" holes in it: just bolt it on to two studs and you have a way of stopping hub movement. He said , "speak softly and carry a big stick".

      @freemansgarage  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a pretty clever idea to keep the hubs from turning. I might have to steal that idea someday. Yes, big stick ideology.

    Hi Richard, very nice haul of previously enjoyed treasures. Now i'm waiting for the hanging of the kitchen cupboards video. Take it to a machine shop for new threads?. It's snowing hard here, looks like all the snow will fall at once :-(

      Cabinet hanging video is to come on the Freeman's Garage Extra channel. I think we're good to go now with the threads issue. Sounds like I scurried back down south just in the nick of time. Thanks as always for watching & commenting.

    When you tighten the pinion nut you chrush a sleeve inside. Everytime you tighten it crushes a little bit more. Don't back off!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      I might need to snug it up a little then. I appreciate you taking the time to say something. Thank you.

      Best way to tell is with an inch pound torque wrench. It’ll tell you when you have correct bearing preload. That is what the crush washer is there for.

      @PaulMFDouglas 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would snug it up just to the point where there's no play in the washer.
      Keep on keep'n on.

    I have a few of those thread restorers but no instructions. Would you post a copy of those instructions so I could add that to my information collection? Thank you. Have fun with your project car. I'm working on one just like it. Gary R.

      Done. I scanned & posted an image on the Freeman's Garage community tab. Here's a direct link www.youtube.com/@freemansgarage/community. You should be able to right click & save the image. I think. If you need the image emailed to you just let me know through the comments & I we'll get it done. Thanks for watching the videos.

    Halfway thru the video, and I'm screaming out loud, "Just send it!" I feel like you're overthinking it. What have you got to lose? Since you're considering R&P

    That washer CAN NOT BE LOOSE, TORQUE TO SPEC. WITH FOOT LB. TORQUE WRENCH. Look up the Spec. for that rear & tighten it down.
    I use Pipe Wrench on the Yoke & Tighten Down the Nut with Foot LB. Torque Wrench to SPEC. Might need a Cheater Bar also.
    THAT WASHER CAN NOT BE LOOSE, TIGHTEN NUT TO SPEC.
