  • Sofia city center has some incredible food, things to do, sightseeing and attractions to see. This travel vlog shows Bulgaria and it's food... ⬇ Click 'Show More' ⬇
    Sophia aka Sofia, is the largest city in Bulgaria and home to some amazing buildings, history and attractions. The city center is the best place to start on your sightseeing hunt and covers a good amount of the best things to do and what to see in Sofia.
    Bulgarian food is incredible, but our priority was the traditional Bulgarian breakfast for the purpose of this vlog! Bulgaria has some delicious cuisine, but any country that eats dessert for breakfast is high on our list of things we have to try! Mekitsa in Sofia was a must taste! They call it food, we call it dessert :)
    Bulgaria is an easy place to make a travel vlog, city centers like in Sophia make our job easy with deciding what to see. For the most part, the city offers incredible buildings, churches, ancient ruins and age old structures. To really tackle the larger things to do in Sofia you probably need to get out of the city and venture deeper into Bulgaria as a whole. In upcoming travel vlogs we'll also show the other main attractions a few hours away, known as top sightseeing stops, to add some contrast to the concrete of the city along with more food where we can.
    Stay tuned for more Bulgaria and Sofia vlogs from in and around the city including a free food tour coming soon.

    Bulgaria just keeps on making me smile! I can't get over the number of ancient ruins you have come across. But when you check a map of that part of Europe and see Bulgaria's proximity to Greece and Turkey, especially Istanbul (the former Constantinople and capital of the Byzantine empire) it all makes sense. Bulgaria is right there in the centre of the action of the classical world - no wonder the history is so rich. What a fascinating country and your vlogs are really bringing it to life for me!

    • @DanegerAndStacey
      @DanegerAndStacey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's not difficult at all to hunt out ruins here, and better yet, when you do it's not crowded like in Athens for example! Bulgaria definitely has a lot going for it, shame we won't be able to get to the coast either because apparently thats beautiful

      Rex Waldron yet they still blame Turks, Greeks and Albanians for ruining the Bulgarian culture, while there are clearly so many cultural facts in the country.unfortunately the humankind appreciates separatism more then unity.

    You're located in one of the coolest parts of Sofia at 10:29 in my opinion.The reason being that this is one of the fewest places in the world where you can find a church, a mosque and a synagogue each in a 2 minute walking distance from the other.

    As a Bulgarian I would say our country is a bit underrated as a tourist and travel destination at some aspects.
    Come and enjoy the most delicious food in Europe and our amazing nature and climate. The season doesn't matter - skiing in the winter, beach parties during the summer, seaside high mountains - we have it all!
    If you are a history freak - well "the Balkans produce more than they can consume". And if you are a digital nomad - this is the place to be!

    Sofia's downtown area is currently undergoing dramatic changes and it's literally a construction site area. The simple fact is that it was craving for some refurbs as the pavements and tiny roads were in a very poor condition.
    By spring 2019, the cool Garibaldi Sq., Book Market at Slaveikov Sq., the famous Evlogi Georgiev aka "Popa" meeting spot will revive and the city will definitely have a brand new look.
    Anyway, thanks for visiting Sofia. Please come again in the near future :)
    P.S. Mekitsa is also very tasty with honey but try the traditional banitsa with white cheese accompanied with boza (drink) or Ayrian (yoghurt drink). Caloric, yet very good and cheap breakfast!

It is unfortunate that Sofia is currently into lots and looots of repairs and reconstructions but in the summer the traffic here is less, hence there are renovations everywhere. This little church next to the Sophia statue is on the ancient ruins' level for the reason - when Bulgaria was under Ottoman empire occupation, they could still practice their own religion, but the church could not be higher then a Turk on a horse. So what they've decided to do is to dig up the hole and build big part of the church underground and have just a dome sticking above the ground level.
    This story is for me the best example of how clever people can be to bend the rules to their needs - a typical way of thinking of most of the eastern Europeans. (I know what I'm saying, I'm one of them) :D

    • @DanegerAndStacey

    • @haskovali
      @haskovali 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      what you are saying is nothing more than a bullshit now. if the churches werent allowed to be building higher than whatever bullshit you are saying, how come the bulgarian church built the "iron church " in istanbul which is almost as high as 25m with the bell tower !!!!! also if this bullshit you are saying true how come all of the churches in sofia and plovdiv were open during the Ottoman period?
      What you see in this video is churches built in the Roman times and because the infrastructure and road maintenance in time the level of the ground raised and almost made the old churches look like they were burried . Go and do a bit history research to learn your own history !!

      haskovali I don’t get why you’re getting so angry about it. I was told this story by the tour guide when visiting Sofia as a tourist as I’m not a Bulgarian. Is it true? Don’t know, never bothered to fact check the tour guide story. If it’s not true then ok, I got fooled, not a big deal. Relax bro.

    • @_fiflia_5487
      @_fiflia_5487 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      haskovali The Iron Church in Istanbul was built in 1892 - 1896, when Bulgaria is no more under Ottoman rule. Yes, the church in front of St. Sofia statue ( St. Petka) is build in XI century and because of that she's not in a same level to the street, but Marzena Lidia is absolutely right about that how high the churches could be in a Ottoman empire occupation. 90% of the churches from that time was builded under the streat level, the rest 10% was build in the mounteans, where Turkes could't find them. So, it's better for you to learn history, before to teach other people. Or maybe the Turkish blood in your veins don't like what historical facts are?

    • @_fiflia_5487
      @_fiflia_5487 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Marzena Lidia Don't worry. 😉 The story, that tour guide told you, is absolutely true. haskovali is Turk and it's understandable that he didn't liked the historical facts. Good luck

    The population of Sofia is around 2 million people, and yes- it is the biggest city in Bulgaria. Fun fact, the parking in front of the cathedral is sooo full on Christmas, Easter, etc, although I think they decided that cars won’t be allowed anymore. Sofia is also one of the coldest cities and Bulgaria and we are always complaining how cold it is, especially this summer because the weather has been rainy and cold- definitely not typical for the country. Hope you enjoyed your stay :)

    It's good to see Stacey got her Mekitsa this time (I remember in one of the previous videos you were a few minutes late to the shop). They look good, I'm sitting watching this with a coffee in hand wishing I had one now :D I've also just become a patron on your Patreon page to try and help you with your travels (and help pay for the beers) :P

      It's just a shame there are such expensive mekitsas. Sold on the street (although they are now not too common), they cost 0,40 - 0,60 BGN - and are surely much bigger. However, I hope the foreigners enjoyed our country.

    Nice video again :) Having Visited Sofia and Bucharest now what city u think it looks better its better destination for a tourist? :)

    • @DanegerAndStacey
      @DanegerAndStacey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats hard to say - as much as we enjoy cities, we always prefer the secondary city like Plovdiv for example. In Romania we didnt get to explore further than the city, but our friends loved places like Brasov. Dont think we could pick between Sofia or Bucharest! In a lot of ways they're very similar.

    • @sorinpopa1442
      @sorinpopa1442 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok thanks for ur Reply ya u only visited Bucharest thats true . Romania is a much bigger country then Bulgaria is , like size at least(its double the size Bulgaria is ) and has more diverse landscapes to offer bcs of that . Sad that u only visited Bucharest but next time prob. if u ever came back here u would visit other Cities from here and dont miss Therme Bucharest :) Good Luck Have Fun in ur next Travels :)

    I am surprised you don't walk around with re-usable water bottles. Mine saved my life over there when I was running around Europe in June and July (even though those temperatures are still nothing compared to the 47+C I came back to last week, but then, I don't walk around AZ in the summer, either...). I had so much fun discovering the different water fountains in several European countries (I took pictures of them all), most of them were quite pretty!

    • @DanegerAndStacey
      @DanegerAndStacey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We most definitely should walk around with a water bottle! Wait, 47C?? That is madness, how can anyone live life in those conditions...

    • @marzenalidia8277
      @marzenalidia8277 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daneger and Stacey it’s going to be above 40 degrees for the next few days in the south of Europe, so please get yourself some reusable bottles to take with you. The best is to get those with carbon filter that way you can use the water from the water fountain with no risk.

    mekitsa actually contains less flour than bread does. and mekitsa can be made with bulgarian yougurt, or if your fresh milk gets sour, instead of trowing it away, add some flour and a pinch of salt, then fry it and voala.

    The center of Sofia is beautiful but you haven't enter some districts like lyulin obelya or krasna polyana. They are terrible. In fact a lot of people leave there. Of course there are some nice districts like lozenets knyazhevo and krasno selo. It is really beautiful to go in lozenets by tram because it goes thru the park which is like a big forest. It goes thru the forest because lozenets is located on a hill and the tram has 4 turns. There is also a nice stop with nice bulgarian traditional house. There is also an path from the stop thru the park. In fact in the rush many people use the stop in lozenets.

    Hey guys, I know it's almost impossible to find breakfast here. Except for the booths with bureks/баница or such pastry. But proper place to sit and have a breakfast early in the morning, doesn't exist. I don't call it a breakfast if it's 10 o'clock in the morning. More like 5... flat... :)
    You can't even go to a hotel and have a seat there - it's for the all inclusive guests, only! Take my money and shut up doesn't work either...
    Don't know where you're staying and how you live here, but if you want breakfast and coffee, have the means to make it your self. It's that fucked up...
