Free food tour yup, apparently free walking and food tours are a thing! According to Balkan Bites in Sofia they are the first to start a free tour offering Bulgarian food and the first in Europe as well.
The day was majority walking tour around Sofia, with some smallish food tastings of Bulgarian food and history of Bulgaria and it's cuisine along the way.
This is the first time we've ever taken a free tour and only the 2nd or 3rd time we've been on a walking tour and we have to say it was a pretty great way to see more of Sofia and learn about Bulgaria and it's cuisine. We were stoked to find Balkan Bites for sure.

Our fast food in Bulgaria is banica or also called in English pastries.
These fast food shops*( bulgarian pastries food) are very unhealthy, also very tasty but when you use to it you can get sick .
The first drink is called Tarator. It's a soup that we drink, especially in the summer. We do not really use it as a sauce. By the way, I do not know anyone that collects all the coins from their life but the story as a whole is correct haha. We do it the day before Christmas every year and the one who gets the piece with the coin will have good luck next year. Anyway, keep up the great work with the videos! You have some awesome shots! How many more days are you staying in Bulgaria?

The first you tried is called "Tarator" and it is cold soup as you mentioned, everybody here eats Tarator in the summer ;)

I am from Sofia, Bulgaria and I am so happy that you like my country. I am a little upset that they told you the cold soup is called tzatziki. That's not correct. Tzatziki is greek meel and it is make of more thicker milk and in the bulgarian one we put water in the milk and that's why is more watery. Anyway our cold soup is called tarator (таратор). Thare is a slight of difference. I hope you have a great time in Bulgaria. Next time try boza (боза). It's a traditional drink. If you some recommendations where to go or what to eat, let me know. Сладката Пуканка No one have said that it is called tzatziki. Of course it is announced as tarator, but since the tour is an interaction with the guests you have to connect stories and compare things. So it is said that Tarator is very much like a liquid version of tzatziki, many people have been to Greece, so it is a good food association and people remember it.
It is actually not really right to compare Tzatziki to Tarator! As a Bulgarian, you should know this. There is quite a difference. One is a meal and made out of Greek yoghurt, which is thicker than our yoghurt. Tarator on the other side is really a summer SOUP, it is made cold and you eat it in summer especially. It is more like a gazpacho but made from yogurt. Also, the coins, traditionally are in a pita, and banitsa you put these tree buds, I don't know the name in English ( dren). It is good to give the correct information when you represent Bulgaria in front of tourists.
Ralitza Sultanova As I said previously no one announced one like the other. If you have made the effort to read what I wrote, you might grasp why it is appropriate to compare things from the balkan cuisine, since we share a lot of similarities with our neighbour countries. The tarator is obviously a SOUP, and it is announced like one - summer, cold soup made out of yogurt and other ingredients. Also it is said that we Bulgarians are having a thing called Snejanka, the thicker version of Tarator and more or less the same as Tzatziki. Like it or not Bulgarian cuisine is not purely original and ours, it is a mixture of all the different tribes coming and going, as well historical events, since Bulgaria was a crossroad of many. In different regions there is quite different way of preparing it - with cucumbers or pickels, with or without walnuts, etc... you can notice differences also into traditions regarding the banitsa and pita and where people put coins and charms. Because you can see both in different areas around the country. In many families people put a coin into the banitsa. Instead of picking on the correctness of the information served on the tour and emphasize that a true Bulgarian MUST NOT compare things which obviously are so similar it would be odd not being compared, try to see how positive this tour is, what kind of impression we give to foreigners and how happy they are. Stop being so narrow minded and seek for reasons to judge how the tour is led. Especially since you haven't participated in. Because, believe me, I do know what I am talking about, I do make my research in various resources and I definately give correct information.

Since I can see your confusion about our tradition I would like to tell you about banitsa and bread with the coin we are doing the day before Christmas.
Banitsa is a breakfast we usually do in the morning with airian or boza.
The bread you are talking about is like a bread and it is done on our holiday called Бъдни вечер, we usually have a vegetarian food including 7 meals excluding any meat. Basically the traditional bread we do have a well-cleaned coin (usually stays in alcholol our ancestors was using rakia and we still stick to it) and before anyone eats the bread we check for the coin as this is a great deal to us.
I`m just trying to explain and I`m really happy you have enjoyed your stay in my country all the best.

The chunks are walnuts. There a few subtle differences between the Greek tsatsiki and Bulgarian tarator, not only the consistency. The yogurt is different. Tarator may be strange for most but boy, it feels great in the summer heat

Don't think of it as a cold soup, this would play your mind. This is just yogurt mixed with water and added those ingredients. It's very healthy and great in hot days.

the real Banitsa is made at home, we add eggs as well, most vendrors use very cheep cheese (not Feta at all) and the quality is not that good
Our Bulgarian cheese is not called feta in English just simple white cheese.
We have one of the best in the world white cheese and kashkaval *( yellow cheese normally called cheese in English that is totally wrong, but basically English is wrong from start.

Hey Dan, good job for drinking the tarator (or tap-a-top :P) without the spoon - that's how it's done when in a cup/glass (so not sure why they give spoons). The way my mother prepares it, the cucumber would be grated very fine, so it's easier to drink.

I really enjoy tzatziki and it's nearest equivalent in Indian cuisine - raita. Raita (like tzatziki) provides a cool refreshing contrast to spicy food so is probably best enjoyed in that context. Beer of course, is another fine cooling contrast to spicy food! I liked the shot through those leaves that had brown crinkled edges - always great little touches like that to enjoy in your videos.

The best way to be introtuced to the local culture and cuisine is to visit some local family. Get a local guide, spend some more time on every stop spot to explore (country/city) get to know the people, the story/stories and memorize. Food is one of the best ways to realize how similar people are. Thank you for your visit and your kind words, to both of you.
As a recent subscriber I've missed your previous food tours, I'll have to catch up. I think you're right, that walk round the city trying food would be a good starting point for the first day or two of a visit. It was a good idea to split the vegetarians from the meat eaters, I guess it makes it easy to plan the dishes for each group. As always this was a fun video :D

Like other people said, tarator is kind of a soup, mainly made in the summer because its really refreshing, but the taste really depends on how its made. Its awesome if made right!

I am really glad you guys are not vegetarians, cause we bulgarians don't focus too much on foods without animal ingredients.
We eat tons of fruits and veggies, but our best and most popular dishes contain either meats (including every possible edible part of an animal like liver, kindeys, heart, tongue etc.), cheeses or eggs :)
It’s a food. It’s called soup but we eat it all the time in the summer. You won’t find a Bulgarian who doesn’t love tarator.
You just find one. I am Bulgarian, and I don't eat or like tarator :).
More or less this cold soup is invented in past as a natural isotonic drink for people working on the field, its historical predecessor (that nobody eats now) is without yogurt - just water with vinegar, garlic and salt and sometimes cucumbers. I can understand how important is to eat/drink something like that when you are under blistering sun all day long, harvesting grain on the field.
You've just scratched the surface, and I doubt that even the tarator was particularly well made... There's so much more to try - incl. the famous 'shkembe chorba' - you'll either love it or hate it :)
That's what happens when you're a traveller and don't know locals. It's a good excuse to come back sometime!

Tzatziki comes from the Turkish Dzadzuk (the original) , in Cyprus its called talaturi and has more mint than garlic. In Bulgaria and Serbia we call it either Snezhanka salad or Milk Salad and its as old as the greek one - a traditional salad or dressing. Tarator on the other hand is in liquid form and not from dried from the water yogurt.

FREE FOOD TOUR??? I don't get it. Who pays for the guide and food samples? Is it paid by the food sellers so you'd go back to eat at their restaurants?
We're not 100% on the commercials, but its tip based and there is an incentive to go back and visit the restaurants to get a discount etc.
Never had a free food tour, but would be interested to try one out. Do you guys sometimes hit McDonalds on your trips around the world? Food can be a downer for some, an upper for many.Being veggie, it makes it hard to find food in a rush; needs plenty of research and time. Hit Greece,please.....
Every now and then we just have a blow out and go for something we know, which is normally Subway haha. We just arrived in Greece and shiiiiit we have some amazing stuff to share with ya'll.
I'm shiiiiitn' big time! Have a wonderful time and stay away from the local OUZO 'cause it's a fun and dangerous drink. Enjoy goats cheese and of course the most amazing feta to be had in the world. You guys hitting the islands? It will be full at the moment with tourists from Europe.

Thanks for this. I was in Bulgaria in 1988 and the only local restaurant had a pathetic sausage and red wine. If you went to the Sheraton for $US20. you could get a western meal.

The best way to enjoy the yogurt soup (Tarator) is by spooning it, not drinking it and possibly have some french fries on the side (as a starch) ,in my humble opinion...
