Visited Sofia about 12 years ago 2010. Had a bucket list to visit all european cities on a budget. Had a flight for 30 euros return from London winter time I think early January, it was --20 C when I arrived--beware travellers from UK it can get much colder in Bulgaria but the snow is much better than London nice fluffy and powdery as oppose to icy, damp and slushy in UK. Most restaurants, cafes had outside shelters with heating very cosy so no problems :) Lots of interesting buildings old and new, quite a contrast not unpleasant to see old things mixed with old soviet concrete social housing blocks very different but very cool :) Contrary to some comments did not find Bulgarian people unfriendly quite the opposite. I think an important thing to mention Bulgarian people shake their head for yes and nod for no 99% of people nod for yes and shake for no-----body language is very important--the guy at my hotel reception one night shook his head at me-I thought what have I done wrong-but of course he was being agreeable and welcoming :) Do think in general Health and safety could be improved--but reflecting on 12 years ago probably is good now Bulgaria is in EU.
