Hi Shogo, my name is Kevin, im form Perú and i love your videos. I started training iaido 3 months ago and I bought both the initial kit and the iaido uniform by tozando. But, they gave me an obi not a kaku obi. So, talking to my sensei, he told me that there is no problem. But I wanted to ask you if you know a way to also tie the obi or what is your opinion about it. Thank you very much, I hope your answer.
Be aware of the fact that if you have any knots in the back it could be very unpleasant when rolling or doing ukemi where you're on your back. In Aikido it's better to tie all knots in the front.
Folding my hakama has always been a pain in the neck over the years. Thank you so much for demystifying this process while preserving the spirit and beauty of the tradition. I'm definitely fond of the Japanese culture. Greetings from France.
I'm a simmilar situation! I draw a lot, and since I really like japanese stuff I wanted to make some japanese characters as well, but I wanted it to be accurate!
Thank you Shogo! I started training Iaido last week and my teacher asked me to repeat the folding and wearing of the hakama at home so I could learn and memorize all the knots but I couldn't recall most of it. Then I got the notification of this video and you saved me. Now I just got to rewatch this video like ten times but eventually I will memorize everything :)
Holy cow, Shogo - first you inspired me to really pursue iaido (and I absolutely love it), and my first iaidogi and hakama are on the way as we speak and somehow you knew that I'd need to learn how to care for the hakama! You are just the best. Domo arigato!
Nice video Shogo! In Aikido, we do it quite similar. The two biggest differences are probably that the knots can’t be on the back and the plastic to hold the hakama up isn’t there because it would be uncomfortable when doing ukemi, and that many practitioners prefer the thinner obi you also see in Judo and the like.
Our sensei likes the thinner obi (not kaku) even for iaido but I opted to get both and very much prefer the kaku obi. In the end, I think for every budo there's plenty of ways to do it and as with everything, you do it in a way your sensei is at least fine with.
Before watching this I watched other folding videos for my Hakama and this is definitely the most easy to understand! :D thank you for the amazing and clear tutorial 😊
Origato, Shogo! I am very grateful to you for your kind tutorial 🙏 I tried to find myself in Judo, Aikido, Jiu-jitsu, Kendo... But in our small country, Lithuania, we have only cheaters of martial arts. In any Dojo you go, the "master" will kill you with unbearable physical training and will show you some techniques for the 10 Dan or nearly, while you are only beginner. They suck your money, put your health on the edge and teach you NOTHING. So I started to learn from TH-cam videos, and you are one of the brightest Teachers for me 💯⛩️🇯🇵 keep going, Shogo!
Thank you for this tutorial Shogo and greetings from Canada. I started Iaido at the beginning of this year and have been waiting for almost 3 months for Tozando to have a storewide sale to purchase everything I need except an Iaito as I already have one. I feel much more comfortable now seeing you do this and I can't wait to order my training gear. Take care and stay safe!
Thank you so much for this video, Shogo! I just bough a hakama and I couldnt figure out how to fold it. The last part of your video was so useful. I dont think anyone's ever taught how to fold a hakama properly on youtube before
I was familiar with the first few sections, but I've always failed miserably at the correct method of folding! I cheat by using a suit bag :) Now I know about the holding under chin and the flip I hope to have a bit more success! Best wishes from England!
Thanks for the video Shogo. This helped me get proficient with putting on my Obi and Hakama for Iaido class. It also helped me with folding the Hakama properly. Cheers.
I learned how to do this while I was in Japan 10 years ago, but I had forgotten how a long time ago. You literally posted this on the same day I decided to dig my old hakama out of my closet. Very helpful. Thank you!
This video was the gate way to my Iaido training. Been searching for a Dojo for the last couple of weeks and I'm taking my first lesson this weekend! Thank you Shogo!
i'm very intrested about japanese culture from many years. I discovered your channel some days ago.. your videos are very interesting and so pleasant. Thank you very much! Greetings from Italy!
Thank you very much Shogo for such a wonderful and informative video. I really enjoy your content especially content regarding budo as I too enjoy budo and traditional Japanese culture and content. You are clear, concise, and organized in your delivery. Please keep up the wonderful work.
I love folding hakama. It's like origami. I always am in a near meditative state while doing it. (I fold in a way similar to yours.) I had a yondan in Aikido named Nakamura sensei from Southern California show me his preferred method called the "California roll" named after the sushi 🍣 of the same name
Thank you so much for this video!!! I am currently working on designing a character with Japanese inspirations, and I am very grateful for this video because I will be able to visualise the many folds and ribbons correctly for drawing them!!!
Thank you Shogo this has really helped us with getting dressed for our oline practice with you and Master Seki. Thank you so much 👍 Take care. Stay safe 🙏 John and Kate
While I’m still stationed in Japan I had ordered a Hakama in white. Then I had ordered Khaki, Navy blue and light blue dye fabrics to customize it my way. The dogy is going to be in light blue as for the juban is going to be navy blue and the Hakama is going to be in khaki.
Before I even knew what a Hakama, or a Kimono even was - I had countless dreams about me wearing them and for the life of me I simply could not place my finger on exactly what it was. After doing some research and finding out it was from the Japanese culture, instantly I became obsessed with the fashion and now it's become my dream to speak Japanese, and travel to Japan. So THANK YOU, Shoto, for all the helpful advice and guidance! Since Kyoto is one of the destinations I plan on visiting when I go, I surely hope to thank you in person if I see you! !
Awesome!! I love iaido! This is my first full year so far and it has been a wonderful experience! Wearing and folding dogi have taken a lot of practice.
You have inspired me to want to pursue Iaido. The only thing holding me back are my thoughts if I'm too old to start practicing this beautiful art. I'm 25 at the moment, will be turning 26 in a few months, would deeply appreciate your input! Much love and support from the Netherlands :)
i always wonder what other people think of japan because my idea of the wisdom of japan is the way of tying and folding hakama. it's so clever and most people don't even know about it!

Thanks for this Shogo. It's much easier to interpret than just using diagrams. Interestingly, we don't usually use a obi in Kendo, Aikido or traditional Jiujitsu. I always use one for iaido of course.
Shogo-sama, Itsumo douga arigatou. Great video!!! I remember how I was always enjoyed folding my hakama, over and over again. Also, doing the knot for the iaito fukuro....Really fun!! Thank you so much!! I'am training Iaido, and now I have to wear a hakama because my sensei tells me that. Thank your for this video, I'm from Spain, sorry for my inglish levels xD❤❤❤
Eh... I'm watching from boredom, if I'm being honest. I've worn hakama for decades. I just want to see how our friend Shogo wears his. 👍👍EDIT: Shogo ties the hakama slightly differently than I do, but does the obi identically. None the less, this is probably the best hakama tutorial I've seen. Well done, Shogo.
Very informative. I enjoyed hearing your wife expressing everything I was thinking, but in a beautiful soft voice, instead of my grunts. Also I'm with Mel Brooks, don't wear anything too, complicated. Arigato Sensei.
I recently bought a Hakama when I visited Japan (and I think it even came from the store in Kyoto you mentioned) and after it came out of the washing machine, all the folds were messed up (it's made from cotton). As soon as I can, I'm gonna try and fold it properly.
Thank you for this video, it's funny because I practice aikido and after 5 years I still can't wear and fold my hakama correctly, I'm glad in Tokyo I wasn't a shodan yet so I avoided an awkward situation while in France hakama is allowed at 3rd Kyu not 1st Dan. I'll try this method by curiosity for sure it is a really nice video, take care of yourselves !
I have hakama. I usually have then dry-cleaned because they were dyed with real indigo. I usually bring instructions on how to iron the pleats for the cleaners.
I have seen a few hakama tutorials (still have no idea, how to wear one correctly), but this was the best, most detailed one, I've seen. I had no idea, how towear a kaku-obi. By the, do you have any video about what to do with the sageo? I have seen practicioners wrap it around the hakama tie, but I have no idea, how to do it corretly, or what is the original purpose.
I've been itching to get back into Iaido and martial arts in general. Sadly I lost contact with my Iaido teacher years ago and can't get back into it with a proper teacher so I'll just practice on my own.
Excellent vídeo, very instructional in an easy way; the best vídeo of how to fold your hakama. Tomodachi Shogo Arigatogozaimasu o muchas gracias amigo Shogo!
Amazing tutorial - thank you!! What do we do if we screwed up the folds on the hakama through bad folding in the past? 😅 Unsure if I can re-iron it appropriately at this stage
Hello Shogo, What difference does it make (starting at frame 7:08) tying the obi on the front first, and then sliding/rotating it to the back? By doing so the wearer can see what he/she is doing and have better reach and control. Thank you, Santiago B. Tejada
I plan on wearing a hakama as part of my " lady samurai" costume this Halloween and this video is exactly what I need. I may even practice in it when the weather gets cooler. One question: how does one use the restroom when wearing hakama?
I learned something today. Kansai vs Kanto for Obi starting position. Interesting! Could you possibly discuss more differences for regional differences if you know them?
5:30 I wonder if the man’s narrow obi is able to be tied from the front and then turned clockwise towards the back like the narrower yukata obis can be turned.
Hi, I bought a hakama, but I don't understand why there are no pleats at the front, which gives the impression of a baggy pants. However, I followed the size chart guidelines and chose a size that corresponds to my height (around 1.66-1.67m) and weight (88-89kg). I chose size T24. The front straps are also too short to tie at the back. Is it possible that the size I chose is not correct? Thanks for the videos! :)

Incredible timing Shogo, I just received an Aikido uniform with a Hakama that I had no idea how to wear! Thank you for your always informative videos!
Are beginner in aikido but wearing a hakama ?

@@Blondie42that's right. This way of wearing hakama is not suitable for aïkido. I tried and the knot behind hurted my back.

This is actually the best tutorial for all things hakama-wearing related. Awesome video!
The hakama folding is exactly how I learned it in Kendo when I was young. Natsukashii.

Muchas muchas gracias Shogo ... I spent like 45 min fighting to wear it properly and I failed again and again until I found your video 🤩
This makes me want to wear this and experience it myself. Very fascinating, thanks for the the enlightenment shogo!

A lot of discipline and sincerity was put into how things are done here. Thank you very much Shogo-san.
While I’m still stationed in Japan I had ordered a Hakama in white. Then I had ordered Khaki, Navy blue and light blue dye fabrics to customize it my way. The dogy is going to be in light blue as for the juban is going to be navy blue and the Hakama is going to be in khaki.

It is NEVER late to take on Iaido!
I'm 28 and just started... i'm still the youngest at my dojo.
I'll be 42 and looking to start
i always wonder what other people think of japan because my idea of the wisdom of japan is the way of tying and folding hakama. it's so clever and most people don't even know about it!
Nice basics and most important details what everyone who wears keikogi should know. If it is possible, I would love to se advance/master level explanation on the details, the origin, meanings and possible variations. Of course not all in one video. It is nice to see historical background and not like many did and still do a “bro-science” explanations. I’m sharing it with my iaijutsu group. Love the video! Kampai
Thx for the reply. Subscribed :)
Thanks for this Shogo. It's much easier to interpret than just using diagrams. Interestingly, we don't usually use a obi in Kendo, Aikido or traditional Jiujitsu. I always use one for iaido of course.
Finally a very and well explained video! Thank you so much for this Shogo, i will recommend it to everyone
Shogo-sama,
Itsumo douga arigatou.
Great video!!!
I remember how I was always enjoyed folding my hakama, over and over again.
Also, doing the knot for the iaito fukuro....Really fun!!
Could you make some videos like this too? showing the differents types of knot for Sageo and Fukuro?
Yoroshiku onegai moushiagemasu.
Thank you so much!! I'am training Iaido, and now I have to wear a hakama because my sensei tells me that. Thank your for this video, I'm from Spain, sorry for my inglish levels xD❤❤❤
Lets be honestly who is just here to watch the video and not actually have a katana
I don't have a katana, but I do have a bokken
Really I just love the clothes.
But if I need a sword to wear them, then I say that's a bonus 😂
I don't have a katana. But the long way begins with one small step... Like watching these awesome videos by Shogo. They do inspire.
I love this art my katana and Sogo's way to explain
I practice ninjutsu in iran for 5 years and i loved ty shogo
i am from 🇺🇾 Uruguay, is in southamerica, is a small country, in My Home we love yours videos sensei, oss
Thanks!!! I struggle with this as I study traditional Japanese martial arts!!
Watched the entire video, afterwards i bought a kimono and it looks pretty cool. Thanks for the tutorial!
I will definitely be trying this way to tie the obi. 👏
Shogo, ive read that samurai would sometimes tie the legs of their hakama, i would love if you could make a video explaining the why and how. 🤍🦊
I love you videos. I learn so much ,thanks for loving your culture and sharing with others.
Thank you for making the video about related to wearing the hakama shogo, it will really help me wear my hakama in my cosplays
Thank yoi so much! I just started kendo and i was so lost. This really helped me alot thank you!
Your videos keep coming up for many of the questions I'm asking at the moment, so that gets a sub. Thank you for your work. 😁
Thank you again for your tips and explanations, this cleared up a few mistakes that i was making.
I love hakama. I think they look so cool!
I subscribe to him because I love how he explains the culture of Japan and it interests me in the culture 😃😁
This video got uploaded the same day i received my bokken! thank you Shogo!
Shogo you are a life saver. I'm sharing this with everyone in my dojo!
Thank you so much, for this tutorial, it was very very usefully, and make a lot of pleasure to watch! Thanks again
Shogo, Thanks so much. I've been looking at videos all over the internet and most of them are outdated or only focus on Aikido
I had help folding my hakama after my first iaido practice… and it’s stayed that way since. Time to practice folding. 😅
Hello Shogo and thank you for the tutorial, very clear and concise.
Question: How would you tie the outer Obi for training?
wow i never been this early, btw nice vid i did a kendo martial art before but i never know how to bring a katana with it so its interesting for me.
This is what i needed for my new budo gear from tozando!
So that's how you flip it over, brilliant thank you shogo 👌👍🙏
I would like if you showed how do you tie the sageo, I miss that part. Thanks for you always informative and beautiful content!
Unsure if I can re-iron it appropriately at this stage
Man everything is so intricate and beautiful!
When I wear a hakama for aikido, I found it important to tie the straps a tightly as I can. Otherwise it tends to slip around a lot.
Thank you for this very clear tutorial! It really helped!
Hello Shogo,
What difference does it make (starting at frame 7:08) tying the obi on the front first, and then sliding/rotating it to the back?
By doing so the wearer can see what he/she is doing and have better reach and control.
Thank you,
Santiago B. Tejada
Perfect timing it appears for a lot and myself, since im getting my hakama for iai soon
I plan on wearing a hakama as part of my " lady samurai" costume this Halloween and this video is exactly what I need. I may even practice in it when the weather gets cooler.
One question: how does one use the restroom when wearing hakama?
I'm so glad I found you, ありがとごさいます!
THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHINGS!!!! FANTASTIC VIDEO! 🥋
Is there a need for an Obi extension on my hakama. I saw the option on Tozando’s website, but don’t fully understand the meaning or purpose.
I learned something today. Kansai vs Kanto for Obi starting position. Interesting! Could you possibly discuss more differences for regional differences if you know them?
Katana Sword Belt One of Samurai!😍🥰
Hi Shogo...incredible video...greetings from the island Trinidad in the Caribbean...
Thank you very much for this very informative video. Could you perhaps explain in another video what the correct length of the hakama should be?
Do you have a video on basic cleaning techniques for the Iaito?
Excellent video, but I will have to watch it 100 times to remember the steps for my Kyudo uniform.
As usual... Another amazing video (Japanese culture lover who wishes to visit Japan someday) 😅
can you go in more depth with they types of obi as you mentioned the kaku-obi is typically worn by men and im curious about the other types of obi
5:30
I wonder if the man’s narrow obi is able to be tied from the front and then turned clockwise towards the back like the narrower yukata obis can be turned.
Very Informative, thank you Shogo 🙇🏻🙇🏻🙇🏻
What about the the wearing and folding of Hakama for women katana martial art trainees?
Your english voice is so amazing ^^ Easy to hear
Thank you
Was awesome . Will be in Osaka on May 22. For laido training 😎👍
You show how to insert the two swords. Is it the same position if you are using just the Uchi katana for Iaido practice?
Very nice tutorial video, thanks for sharing!!!
Wish you did this video 3 Years ago when i started wearing hakama, it would have made things much easier!!! What about ironing hakama ?
