      Hi Shogo, my name is Kevin, im form Perú and i love your videos. I started training iaido 3 months ago and I bought both the initial kit and the iaido uniform by tozando. But, they gave me an obi not a kaku obi. So, talking to my sensei, he told me that there is no problem. But I wanted to ask you if you know a way to also tie the obi or what is your opinion about it. Thank you very much, I hope your answer.

      Are beginner in aikido but wearing a hakama ?

    • @Blondie42
      @Blondie42 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Be aware of the fact that if you have any knots in the back it could be very unpleasant when rolling or doing ukemi where you're on your back. In Aikido it's better to tie all knots in the front.

    • @taniacharrier2210
      @taniacharrier2210 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Blondie42that's right. This way of wearing hakama is not suitable for aïkido. I tried and the knot behind hurted my back.

    Thank you Shogo!
    I started training Iaido last week and my teacher asked me to repeat the folding and wearing of the hakama at home so I could learn and memorize all the knots but I couldn't recall most of it. Then I got the notification of this video and you saved me. Now I just got to rewatch this video like ten times but eventually I will memorize everything :)

    Holy cow, Shogo - first you inspired me to really pursue iaido (and I absolutely love it), and my first iaidogi and hakama are on the way as we speak and somehow you knew that I'd need to learn how to care for the hakama!
    You are just the best. Domo arigato!

  • @JapaneseJourney
    @JapaneseJourney 2 ปีที่แล้ว +60

    Nice video Shogo!
    In Aikido, we do it quite similar. The two biggest differences are probably that the knots can’t be on the back and the plastic to hold the hakama up isn’t there because it would be uncomfortable when doing ukemi, and that many practitioners prefer the thinner obi you also see in Judo and the like.

    • @MikeGill87
      @MikeGill87 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Our sensei likes the thinner obi (not kaku) even for iaido but I opted to get both and very much prefer the kaku obi. In the end, I think for every budo there's plenty of ways to do it and as with everything, you do it in a way your sensei is at least fine with.

    Origato, Shogo! I am very grateful to you for your kind tutorial 🙏 I tried to find myself in Judo, Aikido, Jiu-jitsu, Kendo... But in our small country, Lithuania, we have only cheaters of martial arts. In any Dojo you go, the "master" will kill you with unbearable physical training and will show you some techniques for the 10 Dan or nearly, while you are only beginner. They suck your money, put your health on the edge and teach you NOTHING. So I started to learn from TH-cam videos, and you are one of the brightest Teachers for me 💯⛩️🇯🇵 keep going, Shogo!

    While I’m still stationed in Japan I had ordered a Hakama in white. Then I had ordered Khaki, Navy blue and light blue dye fabrics to customize it my way. The dogy is going to be in light blue as for the juban is going to be navy blue and the Hakama is going to be in khaki.

    Before I even knew what a Hakama, or a Kimono even was - I had countless dreams about me wearing them and for the life of me I simply could not place my finger on exactly what it was. After doing some research and finding out it was from the Japanese culture, instantly I became obsessed with the fashion and now it's become my dream to speak Japanese, and travel to Japan.
    So THANK YOU, Shoto, for all the helpful advice and guidance! Since Kyoto is one of the destinations I plan on visiting when I go, I surely hope to thank you in person if I see you! !

    Hello Shogo,
    What difference does it make (starting at frame 7:08) tying the obi on the front first, and then sliding/rotating it to the back?
    By doing so the wearer can see what he/she is doing and have better reach and control.
    Thank you,
    Santiago B. Tejada

    I plan on wearing a hakama as part of my " lady samurai" costume this Halloween and this video is exactly what I need. I may even practice in it when the weather gets cooler.
    One question: how does one use the restroom when wearing hakama?

    Is there a need for an Obi extension on my hakama. I saw the option on Tozando’s website, but don’t fully understand the meaning or purpose.

    I learned something today. Kansai vs Kanto for Obi starting position. Interesting! Could you possibly discuss more differences for regional differences if you know them?

    Thank you very much for this very informative video. Could you perhaps explain in another video what the correct length of the hakama should be?

    I wonder if the man’s narrow obi is able to be tied from the front and then turned clockwise towards the back like the narrower yukata obis can be turned.

    You show how to insert the two swords. Is it the same position if you are using just the Uchi katana for Iaido practice?

    Hi, I bought a hakama, but I don't understand why there are no pleats at the front, which gives the impression of a baggy pants. However, I followed the size chart guidelines and chose a size that corresponds to my height (around 1.66-1.67m) and weight (88-89kg). I chose size T24. The front straps are also too short to tie at the back. Is it possible that the size I chose is not correct? Thanks for the videos! :)
