Likewise,neither the technology nor their overpriced prices have improved. Even though you can make more reliable, smaller, more energy efficient and less expensive electronics, even without resorting to outsourcing to developing nations. Putting entirely aside that 99% of student already own phones that have all the hardware required to fulfill the same purposes in class and they can just hand out school-owned calculatiors for exams so there is no cheating. To measure the distance, you'd need to know how long something has travelled at which speed to get there. Basically, if it takes a year for light to reach something, let's say a planet, then that planet is a light-year away. However, we have to wait for the light to come back to us, and measure how long it has been since the light left, and came back, so two years, and cut it in half, because in theorythe light made the same trajectory to the planet and back. As we cannot measure when the light actually arrived on the planet, we cannot be sure that the light didn't actually travelled two years to planet, and then came back instantly. Or travelled one year and three months, and came back in nine months. There is no way to know, as a human on this planet would take as long to get us the information as the light would take to travel, so we arbitrarily decided to cut it equally and that the light, in models, will move at constant velocity in every direction.
