And in thirty years of five vastly different people being in power, nothing I do has been considered "wrong."
Look, I know how badly you want the government to be out to get you. I'm sure it would be all kinds of fun if you were under some kind of cartoonishly evil oppressive regime, but I hate to break it to you, you're not. At worst you're living under a bunch of waspy old men who have long since slid into their second infancy and are more interested in their school yard bickering than running a country. They don't know you exist and wouldn't even care if they did.
For fuck's sake I HOPE there's someone out there watching me. I hope they're watching every moment of my disgustingly nerdy chats with friends. They're monitoring me buying clothes off amazon or steel and wood from Jantz. I want them to know all about the pathetically vanilla porn I surf because if there is someone out there more atrociously boring than me, it's THAT motherfucker.

    A few notes/ additions:
The reason why DuckDuckgo gives good search results is because they still route their requests through Google. The difference is, they mix all of these requests from different users together, so the receiving end cannot distinguish which requests come from which person. Just a heads up for those who didn't know.
Also for file sharing Mega (formerly megauploads) does a very good job. They also encrypt your files before upload them, and you get to keep the actual decryption key. And they give you 50 gb free space, which is enough for me
For messaging Telegram is quite widely used one. Famously, its developer was unwilling to collaborate when his home government requested he create backdoors for them, to the point where he had to flee the country.
For browsing, If you need extra security and are willing to sacrifice speed and convenience, Tor is the way to go. It is basically the nuclear option, it is highly unlikely there will be anything that tops it in the foreseeable future in terms of security. I do not recommend using it as a standalone default browser though, as it is very slow, banned by many websites (gee I wonder why), and doing -some- many things with it, like running website plugins, loading images, watching videos, or using fullscreen (for the same reason Brian and Jason mentioned, about how the resolution of monitor can be tracked) can compromise your identity, ranging from mildly to the point where using Tor is pointless.
If you're using script blocker like adblock, I recommend switching them to NoScript (A very strict one, but you can manage how much is blocked) or uBlock Origin (more convenient, less strict, but with less precise management/control for the user). Both are available as addons for Firefox and Tor.
Also remember that you are the most powerful tool when it comes to anonymity. Common sense is underrated, don't go about spewing compromising/identifiable information. No software will protect you from that
Oh, and VPNs are only as trustworthy as the company behind them is, and the information they re-route is only as private as the servers that hold it are (which are usually not owned by the VPN company and are outsourced to a third party). Although a different service completely, I'd prefer Tor

I want to argue about that. The fact that the statement is a negative doesn't make it any less true. It is a logical conclusion, so I would argue that it doesn't require proof. Perhaps refinement. Maybe a better statement is "it stands to reason that you cannot prove a negative", but still.

    • @JooJingleTHISISLEGIT

'you can't prove a negative' is not a negative statement. it is an affirmation of the idea that it is not possible to prove that something does not exist (or is impossible). if you have no proof that something exists, it may still exist. likewise if you have no proof that something is possible, it may still be possible.
the statement 'you can't prove a negative' means you cannot prove that something is false due to absence of evidence. the reason you can't do that is because we do not have complete information, there are things we do not know. there is always something new to learn, and some of those things prove that you can do something previously you did not know how to do. (or that something exists that we previously did not know whether or not it existed)

The thing is... I do tech support stuff for web sites and the built-in tools that Firefox offers under the development console are quite complete. Press F12, go to the tab for console (which F12 normally goes directly to but if you use inspector after console it'll go to inspector... inspector is great for tracking website problems too though) select the Requests and load whatever web page is broker than fuck... Bam! Firefox tells you every command it runs. Shows your gets and posts. Differentiates between cached and non-cached, etc. It's such a useful tool that I'd literally quit my job if Firefox suddenly became unavailable.

You know very well that Tor can be tracked, right? I'd rather have both Protonmail and Tor anyway because if I were to assume NSA's tracking capabilities being able to break a VPN level of encryption... they can literally break through anything.
Not to mention that Tor, the absolute most private form of service, has fake end node servers run by government-backed companies all over the world. Tor over VPN partially solves this, but again, you question Protonmail's VPN-level safety and privacy, then you question VPN and Tor.
In the end, the only form of true privacy is to throw out your computer and any other device that uses internet or any radio form of communication, only leave your house with face completely covered and use only cash to buy. Where you get cash without touching any bank account, you may come a long way. Hong Kong protesters knew that a long time ago.
But if you go so far to maintain privacy, some people might suspect you to be a criminal.

Awesome video! I have two comments:
1- For browser you should check out Vivaldi too. It's based on Chromium, so you can use all the extensions from the Chrome store. I'm not 100% sure Google can't get info on you, since it is based on their software, but they have a ton of settings for privacy (and usability) and their History page gives some interesting statistics too.
2- I worked for a while with digital marketing for the lab I work at and let me leave you with this tidbit:
Google and Facebook don't charge advertisers to show ads, they only charge you when someone clicks on/interacts with your ad. That means that they have to know who to show your ads to, otherwise they don't make any money. That's why they gather so much intel on people.

A great new feature in Firefox is containers. It's pretty much a way to keep certain websites isolated. There are a couple of plug-ins that use this.
    facebook container.
Pages that has things like a Facebook share button is tracked by Facebook if you are logged in. This plugin keeps Facebook isolated so they can't do it.
    Multi-account container.
This plugin is letting you customize which websites that is isolated so if you're logged in go Google you can separate the search engine from your account.
These are not foolproof solutions but it helps.

Chrome can also have some extensions installed like uBlock Origin and Privacy Badger, which blocks pretty much any tracker. uBlock is instant, since it follows a list of registered trackers, but since lists are never up to date, Privacy Badger covers it up with a built-in AI that learns what should be tracked, if anything escapes uBlock's already great eyes. Of course coupling these extensions to Firefox's security and privacy is WAY safer, but the extensions alone already help A LOT. Add Decentraleyes and any cookie autodelete to the mix and you can feel pretty comfortable already (all available for Firefox, too).

Great tip about DuckDuckGo (you can add it simply as an extension in Chrome).
    • I've been using a quality VPN (PIA) for the past year and a firewall for ALL of my browsing. It definitely worth doing some homework on specific VPNs - some are merely fronts for other platforms (like the one Facebook launched a few years ago...).
    • Another very simple thing to do is turn off search history collection in Google, TH-cam, etc.
    • Adblock also eliminates the temptation to ever click an embedded ad. Seriously - don't click ads. Ever. •
    • I also have no social media accounts at all. I know for some people this may be unthinkable, but it's seriously one of the worst things you can do, if you value privacy.
If I go to myactivity.google.com it shows no history whatsoever, and I've been on the Google platform for years.
