    ABOUT DANNY
    -----------------------
Thanks for stopping by. I created this website as a resource just for you to support you on your golfing journey as I know how tricky learning this game can be…to say the least!
I personally found learning the game too long and difficult in the early days. I read all the books, watched all the videos but my game was not improving. Then after studying various forms of neuro science, motor learning, psychology and personal development in less than two years I went from struggling golfer to the final stage of the Open Championship.
On TH-cam and my personal website (www.dannymaude.com) I will bring you the most up to date training, training that is getting tangible results for my clients right now. I don’t know where you are in your golfing journey, you could be just starting out or maybe your body isn’t as flexible as it once was or you’ve got ambitions to slash your handicap. Wherever you are I’ve created a place here you can learn, share your ideas, ask questions and get all the support you need to enjoy this great game.
Be prepared though. If its a quick fix you are after Im not your man. Here I will give you step-by-step advice that you can take straight to the practice ground and apply to the course but it will require you to get stuck in, screw up…a lot, practice some more and then watch those scores tumble
I’ve had the pleasure of coaching thousands of students all around the world and if you are up for the challenge and are ready to get in the game…LETS GO TO WORK!

This drill has already helped me with the proper sequencing of both the back swing and downswing. Amazing amount of added club head speed and distance. I guess I was what you call a floater. I never really created a powerful coil using my feet correctly. I use the turning the screw with my feet as a trigger, it works amazingly well. Thank you.

Brilliant Dano, I tried the drill outside and I couldn't believe the ground forces it generates. I stayed centered in my backswing as well in the downswing, not only do you stay centered but the speed it produces is effortless. I saw this video before but I didn't try it, that was a big mistake on my part. ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK.

Love this video. I had taken lessons from Golf Tec over 8 years. I've dealt with 5 instructors through that time period due to the instructors relocating. They all would comment that I rotated my hips too far in the back swing and not enough at impact. This is the best drill I've seen to help with the hip turn.

On a standard swing the hips power and lead the shoulders back and lead and power the shoulders down. There are no quick and jerky motions. This form of action disrupts the acceleration and leads to throwaway. The weight shifts to the inside of the feet and toward the heels. The ground functions as a counter force. The club coming down and the feet and legs push up : true gravity golf. Your videos are excellent and perfectly genuine. Note : the shoulders impart the circular motion to the arms and club. The body does the work ( primarily ) the arms accumulate and multiply the work into power. Great video Danny. Cheers F

Golf is not my only passion, as you can see on my public image but with Danny it becomes more and more number one. I had coaching from some great golf-pros on +20 years practicing the game. Recently I've seen some of Danny's videos as well as other Top Coaches of Tour Players worldwide. To my ears and eyes, most probably Danny's explanation mode, body language, voice expression and visual tools are the best on the planet. Thanks for that Danny, keep going with these magnificent videos helping golfers that can't have a physical face to face unforgettable golf lesson with you.

If you study the swing of Hogan and Snead you will see their leg and pelvis action is mechanically similar to how a piston in an engine moves laterally and the connecting rod converts it into circular movement of the crank shaft. Their swings start with a lateral forward press forward and release to get club, hands, hips and shoulders all moving a few inches backwards laterally (piston action) and at the same time the back leg (connecting rod) becomes more vertical and is allowed to straighten and twist against the resistance of the spiked to ground foot. It is the combined lateral movement back and the straightening of the leg which push the right side of the pelvis forward and up and the the left side of the pelvis down and back which is facilitated by allowing the front leg to bend at the knee and be pulled back which acts like the trigger seer of a gun to hold the hips, twisted closed 45° against the back foot in place until the front knee is moved forward with a lateral movement of the hips to target in the start of the backswing.
What you don’t feel unless the back leg is allows to straighten completely is the incredible “wound like a rubber band” tension Hogan felt in his back leg and hip at the top of the backswing. There is so much twisting force he had an extra spike added to his right shoe to prevent the foot from slipping and releasing that tension. With the the hips wound up like he did, which I learned how to do, it is possible to hit shots 100+ yards from just a 1/4 swing position. He suggests a drill in Five Lessons doing that, swinging only to the point the club shaft is parallel with ground and just cocking the wrist then releasing the coiled hips to whip hips, shoulders and hands down and whip the club around the hands and through the ball. Hogan also released radial deviation through impact to accelerate and square the club in a way few have apparently figured out.
That style swing obviously worked for Hogan and Snead. The lateral movement in the backswing can be seen in how the back leg changes from / \ to | \ then back to / as it straightens and the club swinging in an arc pushes the right side of the pelvis back and forwards. It needs to be tried to be understood.
Snead’s leg and pelvis action was similar to Hogan’s even straightening the back leg more than Hogan did. Like Hogan Snead relied on metal spikes to keep the back foot from spinning out due to the torque generated in the back leg as it straightened. Past 45° hip and shoulder rotation closed (together) Snead’s swing differed because he allowed his right arm to separate and bring hands above shoulder and club shaft parallel.
Hogan preferring a lower more inside swing plane did not separate arm and had to extend the lead wrist (cock back) at the top of his backswing to avoid having the club laid off and out of position. With experimentation is discovered if swinging like Hogan with tucked in right arm and with flat wrist my club shaft was laid off at a 45° angle, but the action of extending left wrist at 45° angle swings the shaft and club head mass 45° to parallel with target line in balance over the feet. Hogan needed the coiled hip technique to get hands and club to reverse direction at the completion of the shoulder turn. In his video lessons he stresses the fact that in his swing only the hips moved initially in the downswing.
Jack Nicklaus changed conventional wisdom about hip action by successfully using a swing style in which the hand move before shoulders rotate and shoulders rotate before hips do and the degree to which the hips can rotate is constrained by always keeping the back leg bent at the knee. There is much less torque created in the back leg compared to Hogan’s swing and much more created across the lower back and left shoulder because the shoulders are force to turn more against the resistance of the hips. The power in the downswing in the Nicklaus style swing, which I first learned in the mid 1980s from “Golf My Way” and used until discovering Hogan’s in 2007, in generated mostly from the stretched back and shoulder instead of the coiled back leg.
Tiger Woods took the Nicklaus “don’t turn the hips” technique to the limit in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I bought and studied Tigers 2002 book “How I Play Golf’ which has stop action sequences of him swinging various clubs from three different directions simultaneously. I spend a winter layover standing between two mirrors learning to duplicate the same swing waypoints in 3D space seen in the photos discovering in the process what Tiger did - that swing style is very taxing on the back and legs.
Having tried to swing like Nicklaus, Woods, Hogan and Snead I find Snead’s swing style the easiest to execute consistently - allowing back leg to straighten completely to rotate hips like piston-connecting rod-crankshaft. Rocco Mediate coached by Jimmy Ballard adopted that leg and hip action due to back problems just prior to nearly beating Tiger in the 2008 US Open, the one in which Tiger was playing on a fractured tibia cause by his swing style. Other pros such as Johnny Miller and Greg Norman had swings in which the hips, shoulders and hands all move at the same time in the takeaway.
What allowed Hogan to do it so successfully was how he gripped and lowered the club at address, which is illustrated in Five Lessons as a “wringing the towel” action. If the club is gripped in the air with elbows bent the act of lowering it and letting it hand and swing freely after bending at the hips / causes the forearms and hands to counter rotate against each other pressing the pad of the right thumb down on the left and firming up the arms. Pressing down lightly with the right hand against the left pulls all the slack out of the left arm and pushes the left hand into a stronger orientation quite literally locking the hands in front of the body to the point it is impossible to move the hands and club back away from the ball except with hip and shoulder turn which Hogan did together initiated by a slight forward lateral press and release trigger move.
Hogan’s technique was quite brilliant and quite easy to perform consistently once it is understood and it is a pity so few people (including PGA instructors) understand it holistically and for that reason discount it’s effectiveness. It obviously worked for Hogan didn’t it?

Dude, this a revelation, just tried this screw thought in my backyard and I finally get the body ground connection. I can literally feel like I’m on a giant screw and Im pressing down and screwing it into the ground on my backswing and unscrewing it on the forward swing and follow thru. Cant wait to try this on the course during my twilight round tonight! Ive always been a floater now i can feel it. Between this and Paul Wilson’s YT vids I’m finally understanding the proper mechanics of the golf swing.

Rapidly becoming a big fan. I shot 3 under yesterday, 4 birdies 1 bogey. I was at least one club longer on the irons, sometimes much more (e.g. 160 yard PW, 170 yd 9 iron - crazy distances). So I could have maybe picked up an extra birdie or two if I can get my distances re-calibrated. I attribute this to your part of the lesson with the stick, which reminds me of the "turn in a barrel" type of visual. I have struggled with moving forward on the downswing, finally I have a visual to get the turn done properly, many thanks! The only difference is that I lift my lead heel to take the stress off my knee and lower back.

This is very informative - thanks. When you watch old video of Sam Snead and Ben Hogan, there was much side to side movement in their hips - moving several inches to the right on the backswing. Do you agree? In contrast, none of the current PGA touring pros has any such movement. Your lesson today is the best explanation I have seen on the "new" rotational swing. I may be too old now to make such a change in my swing which has served me quite well over the years, but I can't wait to give it a try. Cheers Brian W.

Danny, you keep your head perfectly centered during all this. I do it and when I video myself my head is moving back towards my back foot on the backswing. I am almost able to get the head back to where it was at impact, but I still think it is effecting my swing.

Great video. I couldn't control my hips, they were either too active or lazy as hell. Here's how I trained them to work better. Stand in front of a full length mirror so that you can see your entire body, especially your hips. Now take a golf ball in your right hand (if you're right handed) and throw it as if you're trying to skim it across the surface of a pond that's to your left. Repeat the motion over and over. As you do so, watch how your hips work during the movement. Repeat the movement many times in the mirror, then take a club and do exactly the same with the club as you did throwing the ball. Repeat as much as necessary until it's ingrained.

This is a really good demonstration. An improper/non-existent hip *turn* (as opposed to a hip sway) was the last major component that was missing from my swing, and I didn't understand how important it was until my instructor had me focus on it. It changed everything for me, in ways that are too extensive to detail here. Great lesson. It's a shame it can't give it more than one thumbs up, it's that crucial in one's understanding of a repeatable golf swing.

Downward pressure and the thread on the screw causes it to go into the ground on the backswing. Unless you mentally reverse the thread on the screw in the downswing, mechanically the screw will come up from the ground. Perhaps a picky point, but makes your metaphor more clear, I think. By the way, you are my go-to instructor, and I love your work.

OK so my swing is following your teaching but I seem to get to the top of my backswing with a good full turn then I see to rise slightly and extend further. Also my rythm and tempo is not good. This is very Pete Cowen - but you explain it much better. I have always been a "floater" (!!) and could never work out how to use the ground effectively, but the grip this gives on the ground is quite remarkable. It's going to take some experimentation but I shall look forward to giving this a go.
PS: on the downswing, is the pressure applied mostly with the lead foot (ie an element of lateral shift), whereas on the backswing it's more with both?
