I started doing this on my driver swing literally just having the swing thought of just using my shoulders and then letting my hips follow and for me at least it’s been amazing results of a lot straighter and way more easy distance.

Hey Tom I'm the guy with the quantum-laser coordination who read one too many golf tip books and subsequently fires the hips early, launches the back heel early, stands up on it early, and saves it with pure hand-eye sorcery. This tip helped me shoot a 78 last weekend! Very similar feel to Sergio Garcia’s ring the bell tip. Weight forward, left arm straight, and arms/shoulders first. Hard to miss , but misses still fly straight. I was a Saguto golf student before and learned a ton! Thanks, Tom.

Tom, big fan of your videos. They are extremely helpful and to the point. This right here is something that I have been fighting for almost a year now on the course. I made some changes with my swing after being led to believe that initiating with the hips for both the back and the down were the way to go. I’ve lost so much distance from the driver down to the 43 and could never figure out why until now. So much momentum lost before connecting with the ball, as well as swaying off the ball with the hips led backswing. This video made so much sense, and I really cannot wait to try this tip out. Another great video. I’ve always been a left arm puller in the downswing. Guess who else was an admitted left arm puller? Moe Norman! He was a pretty good ball striker too! He said the right arm just goes along for the ride. If you have a little athleticism you can eventually learn how to coordinate the shoulders and hips in the downswing. I’m guilty of early extension like most amateurs are but it’s ok. It’s just golf and I enjoy it and I can still break 80 at times. 12 years ago I broke 70 several times but was much healthier and not as stiff. I’m 60 now. The golf swing takes what 1 second? How do you have time to think about pushing into the left hip, squatting,turning, pulling the left hip up?? I don’t think my body could ever learn to do this at my age without hurting my back even more. If you’re 8-9 yrs old then you have the agility for the body to memorize this move and then you will have it for a lifetime but older guys? Hang it up. True believer in letting the shoulders dictate the downswing.

A very "thought provoking" video Tom! I like your idea of the shoulders and arms being the primary influence in moving the club powerfully through the golf ball and the hips are an accessory!!! Thank you Tom!! Your video really shows the result of just turning the hips. No one, and I mean no one has ever mentioned this to me during all the lessons I took over the years. I think back to all the times I pulled a ball with different clubs or sliced with a driver and this was more than likely one of the main causes. I couldn't figure it out. One of my golf buddies (low single digit index) kept saying in to out but I couldn't get constant with it. I tried what you mentioned on 2 different golf simulators and the result was exactly as you described. Even the arm and club positions were exactly as described / shown. The slight "bump" or forward push was the answer. Funny thing, never saw this mentioned on TV or here in TH-cam either. Thank you again!!

I was early extending and tried everything. I started quieting my hips and controlled the swing with hands, arms, and shoulders. The results have been excellent. Great video!

Tom, I’ve been learning from you on your website and TH-cam before that. I started golfing 3-1/4 years ago and went from a 30 to 8.9 handicap in 2 years. I am now at a 10 secondary to more work and little practice/play. My best friend and golfing buddy asked me how I improved so rapidly and I referred him to your website and he has already noticed much improved contact and low point control making golf more fun. I am certain I have room for improvement to a low single handicap player with in-person lessons. I have got as much as I can from your website. I am not a V1 fan. Implemented this today at an indoor golf simulator with trackman. Ive been noticing sporadic deep left glute pain, im assuming coming from firing my hips so much. Focused on delaying those hips and wow. Hit my best 7 iron ever, 120mph ball speed with a carry of 175. Felt smashed when hitting the club face. Still seeing im swinging ever so slightly out to in, if i feel like im forcing an in to out i still see an out to in club path on the trackman lol rather feel natural than forced so ill focus on tight fades. I don't think I've ever seen a straighter line of divots in all my life. That's nuts! Your shot consistency is legendary. On a personal note, my golfing buddy insists on firing hips. He keeps telling me all this stuff too. All these club positions and timing and all this other stuff. I'm like "why do you want/need all of those swing thoughts?" To be perfectly fair, he does beat me most of the time, but that's mainly because my game inside 100yds, chipping, and putting is atrocious and adds 10-15 shots per round, minimum. But that's a story for another day. Keep up the excellent vids. I told you before, I stopped watching EVERY OTHER YT video instructor after discovering your channel.

I liked one of your other videos in which you went through the motion of throwing a heavy weight: you have to use your hips, but hip motion isn't disconnected from your upper body; your entire body flows in the proper manner naturally.
Correct, Jim - the hips play a very important supportive role, and critical to this is that they must do so in accord with the proper sequencing. Great video, Tom. I spent so many years following bad or misleading advice from Golf Magazine articles....SO HAPPY to finally be on the right track. I would spin out of my swing, come over the top, have early extension, etc. from trying to turn and fire my hips. No more! It's like night and day with the quality of my ball-striking. So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, firing the hips, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). What you are teaching makes good sense. I will be practicing this. I'm a senior so the shoulders help with the power. I'm hitting a wedge about 100meters at the moment , will be interesting to see what happens but more importantly is good contact for consistency

Great tips! I use my arms and shoulders and my contact has improved immensely, hitting the ball nice and straight.I need to use my hips like Tom said to gain more power in the right sequence shoulders first hips later.
Firing the hips as a way to start the downswing is very contentious and has become a murky way of teaching the golf swing. Teachers have told students this is what Hogan did. Hogan said the downswing started from the ground. Your hips are not on the ground. If you use the lower body to start the downswing you better fire your right side also. Jimmy Ballard has taught this move for over 50 years and people still get it wrong because they start with the hips, get immediately disconnected and have to throw their hands to hit the ball. You are absolutely correct Tom. Firing the hips is incorrect. Firing the right side with a connected body is a totally different teaching that few understand.

That's because we are all taught old school golf minutia. Everything is about hips and using hands and arms is bad, when it's quite the reverse. Just need good mechanics, timing and the hips will follow the upper torso.

Hi Tom, I already subscribe to Sagutogolf, have done for a couple of years. It's a great course but I have all this other "stuff" that keeps me away from golf at the moment.
As a former baseball player myself, Kevin, I certainly get what your saying! There are certainly some similarities between baseball and golf, but also some considerable differences. So while that rotation comes naturally to us, what we are missing in golf is that little lateral stride towards the pitcher that keeps everything in check. Even if we just picked our lead foot up and put it down as a timing mechanism, it still served to keep us "inside the pitch" and in a loaded position to attack the ball. In golf, when properly deployed in sequence our hips play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips in the golf swing acts as a governor on the rotational component, thereby enabling the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body (like the stride or toe-tap in baseball). It's also a move that you will notice with every great player. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while the head - and thus the swing center - remains in place.) This will occur naturally if we allow it to, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion - and/or that ingrained baseball rotation - has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. For them, the "feel" of the shoulders leading will help them to overcome this, correctly engage their hips, and fix their path, thereby leading them to a solid, "crispy" impact condition. I am 73 years old and shoot in the high 80s to very low 90s. I almost gave up your style until reading this tip a few weeks ago. I am now starting to compress the ball more consistently, I had three back to back 80 rounds last week and enjoying my crispy fried chicken, still having trouble taking divots

Hi Tom. Love your channel and your enthusiasm. May I respectfully offer my opinion. In all fairness, you are comparing apples and oranges. You can't mix fundamentals that pertain to one swing methodology with those of another. There are only 2 ways to move a golf shaft. You can pull it or you can push it. The Golfing Machine calls the puller a "swinger" and the pusher a "hitter" and the fundamentals for each are as different as day and night and can't be mixed together. The term "fire the hips" is meant for pure swingers. Pure swingers use separation of hips and shoulders to tightly wind the upper body against the lower body (x-factor). During the transition they increase that coil (x-factor stretch) by "firing the hips" (hate that term. Will explain later) while the club is still moving back. This removes any slack between the upper and lower body and results in proper kinematic sequencing. The hips pull the torso which then pulls the shoulders, arms, hands and club around in sequence. Your demonstration showing that the hips can fire without the shoulders moving only works because you have slack in the kinetic chain. It would be like attempting to pull a car with a rope that has 10 feet of slack in it, then pulling the rope for 3 feet and proclaiming that you can't move a car with a rope..lol You were not fully wound up. If you were fully wound up and then fired the hips, the shoulders would follow and the right elbow would drop into the slot and the clubhead would approach the ball from the inside. The beauty of this method is that it is fully automatic. There is no release of the club to time. Centrifugal/centripetal force does it for you. Now, why I dislike the term "fire the hips" or "belly button to the target". That can cause people to "spin" the hips (which is what you were demonstrating). That's bad news. There is a lateral shift of the hips first , before they "spin" (rotate). The good news is that you don't have to think about that. There is a better swing thought than "fire the hips". During the transition, instead of thinking "fire the hips", think of shifting your weight from the back foot to the front foot by pushing off of your rear foot. I like how Greg Norman put it , he said "the downswing begins with the leadership of your right leg". So just push off that right foot and shift your weight to the front foot and that will take care of the lateral move of the hips and the eventual rotational move ,without thinking about it. Everything will then be automatically pulled along in sequence. Remember how Norman's right foot would slide? Scotty Scheffler does it too. They are pushing hard with the rear foot. They are not thinking "fire the hips", or "belly button to the target". This method requires passive arms and hands. They just come along for the ride. Trying to add power with the right hand is the kiss of death. You would more often than not disrupt centrifugal/centripetal force from doing its job and that can be ugly, especially in the short game. Many pure swingers will grip the club VERY lightly with the right hand. The club is held with the last 3 fingers of the left hand. If you want proof of how lightly the right hand grips the club with some players on tour, look at slow motion videos of Fred Couples and VJ Singh, and note how the right hand almost comes off the club through impact. It's an insurance policy against the right hand adding power. This method btw is hard to master and requires flexibility and good strength in the lead arm. For those who have mastered it, it is a great thing to not have to worry about timing a release and getting ball then ground contact every time. It's driving a car with an automatic tranny vs a manual one where you have to time the shifting of the gears. Imo, your method does not depend on kinematic sequencing. You are using brute muscular power from the right side of your body to push the shaft. You are a "hitter". So the hips only have one job. To get out of the way to make room for the hands and club to come from the inside. You don't need along back swing. See Jon Rahm and Tony Finau. Very short backswings. If I'm wrong and you are pulling the shaft via the upper body (shoulders as you say in the video) and leaving the big muscles of the lower body passive, then you are giving up a lot of power potential. It's actually a great method for the wedge game, where full power is not essential. You basically "drag" the shaft through the ball using your shoulders and arms along with a little lower body movement to give the swing some rhythm.

Hey, Tom. Where is the smooth tilt to the right? The long,smooth right tilt in the downswing and the butt tuck and extension at the end.. You lost those in this video. Don't desert your roots. You don't start pulling or throwing the club off the chest until the rt.elbow passes the rt.hip in a snap release . It is a centrifugal force swing. The smooth tilt drops the shoulder,arms hands and club in a strait line. This helps increase the wrist cock,keeps the club light and moving in a straight line to store power.Now the hip turn produces the centrifugal force that throws the club down out and forward toward the ball. Lag and the lt.wrist releasing make the club feel more heavy which slows the hands allowing club head and face to extend into the ball to the both arms straight position 3 feet past the ball. Like cracking a whip. This is all in The Stack and Tilt book. Keeps me playing at age 82. Low score this year, 76 from senior tees of course.

I have been struggling with this method for a long time now. Whenever I try to add a little extra (or more) in the downswing with this "firing the hips" method, my game ends up in the same, damn, horrible place. Agree firing the hips is a misnomer. It’s about getting that left side posted prior to impact so energy from the ground is transferred into the ball. For example, tiger had knee issues from snapping that left lead leg back, this pulls the left hip back and right hips forward to the target and has to happen prior to impact.
Yes, but here's the thing - there's no need to leave the lead side to begin with. This system certainly allows for some transfer of pressure into the trail side during the takeaway. After all, we are moving the mass of the arms and club backwards during that initial stage of the swing. Some like to sense the dynamic pressure shifts; others prefer the feel of a gradual increasing of weight load into the lead leg from the start. However, in either scenario the key here is that we do not allow our mass - and thereby our swing center and low point - to drift back at any point. As for the ground, it is static and not a source of golf swing "energy" in and of itself. We could stand on the ground in an athletic posture all day long, and the ground will just remain there and do nothing. It is the dynamic actions of a properly executed motion - for example, the flexing/straightening of the lead leg - that allows us to leverage the ground, much like a high jumper does. When properly deployed in the correct sequencing, our hips are a tremendous source of power. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. Thanks so much for the video. I totally agree with you. I was a hip player for many years and my back has now started to rebel against my.swing. I am 69 years old and a life long golfer. Mid single digit handicap. My new feel to start the downswing is to fire my right shoulder towards the ball. Kind of replacing my left shoulder with my right shoulder. It is new and I need more practice and sometimes I do come over the top and steep. A work in progress but your video will help me get the feel even better.

Ok - I am loving this approach. Just getting started, and I've also taken 2 lessons from a local club pro - he's been helping, but this week's lessons - it was kind of hilarious - he said "you're swing is much better this time!" - and secretly I knew that I'd not really been able to remember his tips from the first lesson, but I've been starting to work on Tom's approach! 😅 It's still a little difficult to un-twist my brain from the hips-first, weight shifting approach that it seems everyone else teaches! I've gone through the free class at the web site - going to go through it again taking notes and writing up a practice plan. It's actually pretty fun and exciting - I'll have a couple more lessons with local guy (because I need another set of eyes on what my body is actually doing rather than what I think I'm doing 😅) but then: I'm wondering what you get with joining Tom's site - I mean the paid option. @@SagutoGolf@SagutoGolf I'm prbly going to sign up - but the reason I'm clinging a bit to in-person instruction, is that my biggest challenge is actually knowing what my body has actually done on a given swing - short of videoing every f'ing swing in a session, and then reviewing in detail (and, ideally in real time) I need that immediate feedback from a knowledgeable set of eyes to say "this is what your body did". Sigh - I'll do a couple more sessions with dude because he's not the type that gives detailed instruction in every tiny element - he's looking at club path mostly. Having said that - yes, it does get confusing and I've still not gotten to the point where I can easily repeat the swing I'm looking for.

Tom, Your videos are the best and have helped me get back into the game of golf over this past year faster than I could have imagined possible....I watched this latest video as carefully as I could and I noticed that your lead knee seems to move toward the target a split second first before your shoulders or hips. Your shoulders definitely move first before the hips, but it makes me concentrate too hard to move my shoulders first before my hips, so I have tried a few practice swings in my office (too cold to be outside) where I start my swing by moving my lead knee to the target a split second first and then my shoulders and hips seem to fall into sequence in that order and it feels really good. Granted , I haven't taken this to the range, yet, but this also seems to keep me from leaning backward in my swing which has been a reoccurring problem for me. Could I use the lead knee as a trigger, or do you think it will throw off my swing? Thanks again for all you do?

Unfortunately, such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant....... 😎 Consider that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. So counter intuitive to what we have all learned in the past....... but I believe it to be true. We are used to "ground up", ie like a screw, ground, hips, torso with lag, and use the pelvis as an engine. No the pelvis only drops for ground force, and the shoulders and legs drive and follow the hips. It has changed the way I teach, and my students love it.
I know, David, right? But the thing is that this body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance swing system is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's most prolific ball strikers. I agree, but it does look like your hips move first, but you are not jamming them through. Not rushing the hips is what i take from this. I tried so hard in the past to rush my hip turn that I chunked the ball or pressure the ball right. Thanks for the reminder.

2 questions: 1). Is this basically the idea of keeping your back to the target at the initiation of the downswing? It’s an old concept, but I never heard it applied to an S&T swing. Game changer for me if true. 2). What is the first motion of the downswing for you, lateral movement of the hips (not firing), or pulling down on the club? Or are they simultaneous? Firing your hips first is what might be observed in the kinematic sequence. Moving the hands and club in space is what happens in the kinetic sequence. Anyone stating the hips move first is commenting on effect, not cause. The muscles that fire first are in the obliques, but they are moving to stabilise and not to move the club. So you may still get comments saying you need to move the hips first but it is mistaken and they are open to rollercoaster shoot 80-95 all the time.

In fact, once your sequencing - and thus your path - are properly grooved to where you can fully trust it, you should find that you'll be able to confidently rotate your shoulders as hard as you wish. I ask myself who even fires their hips like that, but so many people do it wrong. Coming from a baseball background, you just swing and everything follows like you said. It's about timing and swinging on that plane. Mike Malaska said it best...the golf swing is like throwing underhand

I noticed that your trail arm wraps around your chest after you hit the ball . Does that help with your aim or is it just how I should be finishing my swing?
Hi Larry, That is just the result of a well-connected swing. Think of Tommy Fleetwood, for example. (There are several others, but he just came to mind first.) We should endeavor to maintain our upper arm attachments throughout the entire motion. A good drill for this is to stick a tee under each armpit and try to keep them there from setup to finish. Hi Paul, I've taken it to the course on occasion if I'm working on quieting the hips and felt like playing instead of going to the range. I might also deploy it mid-round if I sense those hips are getting too active. While I find that I can still hit it a long way like that, I prefer a square stance because I find it more supportive of proper alignment and facilitative of a free-flowing motion through to the finish. But that's me. If it serves you well and is not causing you any issues, then let your ball striking and shot shape be your guide! TS
I tend to disagree, but depending on our terminology, we might be saying the same thing. The torso and spine is much more connected than any of the other joints. So I say absolutely, spin the hips relative to the legs, but that’s going to bring the torso and chest with it. Now there’s more motion again with the shoulder girdle and the shoulder joint. I’m currently thing the torso turns underneath the shoulder girdle, making it rock up to the left, but I’m still working on this.😮❤
It may well be a matter of semantics, David. When properly deployed in sequence our hips play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor on the rotational component, thereby enabling the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a move that you will notice with every great ball striker. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while the head - and thus the swing center - remains in place.) This will occur naturally if we allow it to, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. For them, the "feel" of the shoulders leading will help them to overcome this, correctly engage their hips, and fix their path, thereby leading them to a solid, "crispy" impact condition. That should fix my sht. Didn't have enough power or consistency, and was told to lead with the hips instead. Then realized I keep on 'toe-ing' the ground, always firing straight right and getting arms stuck behind me....power still terrible and flipping the damn club. You just displayed my exact issue. Instead of being 'armsy', I was using the hips and forgetting the shoulders because 'they'll follow'.....well, newsflash.....they don't. I'm getting back on the mat and start bringing those shoulders back in ....get my distance and draw back

I just played this weekend and I got thru 12 holes hitting the ball well then all of a sudden I was hitting horribly fat or horribly thin and just pounding the ball straight down. It was frustrating because I knew I was too steep but couldn’t figure out what was causing it. I will try this tomorrow

That's an open invitation to our old swing demons, and they never miss an opportunity to haunt. We get a little too relaxed, a little too loose. We let our guard down. Thank you. I do understand the firing first but I think most must have a good flexibility to be consistent. I def begin to come over the top. I’ll focus on this now. Hit a few balls into my net and already feels better. Now I’m working on keeping my left arm straight and not bending my left wrist or bowing a bit vs bending it toward my watch. Any tips there?

One thing, and I'd think the most important thing that never seems to be addressed in golf tutorials is strength. I'd say the number one reason most people struggle at golf is because they're not strong enough. To hit a ball well, and far, not only do you need reasonably good equipment, a good swing, good mental strength and be able to visualise the shot you want to play, but you need to be strong. Most golfers watching thee videos are golfers who don't work out consistently or practice consistently so they don't have the muscles and ligaments in their hands, wrists, forearms, lats, core, shoulders, legs, calves, ankles and feet strong enough to swing like the pros who do.
While I have no issue with proper strength conditioning and do partake in it myself, a well-executed is a sequential orchestration of motions that harnesses physics and geometry with multiplicative - seemingly exponential - results with regard to compression and distance. Mr. Hogan stood around 5"7" tall and was probably less than 150 lbs in his prime, and seemingly more often than not there was a cigarette hanging out of his mouth 😎, and he absolutely bombed it. Strength isn't always visible as i'm sure you know, hitting 100's of balls everyday will strengthens all the golfing muscles, ligaments and tendons but you won't be able to see it. Most club golfers aren't doing that or working out, so struggle for consistency and power because everything's too weak. You won't know this until you take 6 months to a year off and do nothing. Trying to do what you were doing consistently is very difficult until you build yourself back up to where you were@@SagutoGolf
If I may add to this excellent video: if you start your downswing by moving your lead arm off the chest, keeping your trail leg straight and then making sure your trail shoulder goes under your chin, you'll hit the best shots of your life. These are all things I learned from Tom's instructional website.

I was always told to leave the chest behind longer as your "fire your hips". But this is coming from someone that has always been upper body dominant trying to "control" the swing. However, led me to most of the time always be very steep. The point of leaving my chest behind longer is so that the club would shallow. Agree with that method? I'm going to the range now to try your method of having the left pocket drive towards the target and see if that helps me. 🤞

My wife has been telling me for 60 years I have to much hip movement LOL . but the Amazing Young Tom sorted me out and My Golf in 80 years with to much hip movement has improved as well 🤣

One of my problems with hip turning is I spent three years with Paul Wilson, Red shirt guy from Las Vegas. He’s all about the hips firing and arms going along for the ride. He made it sound interesting but I really had to reteach myself after I learn ‘stack and tilt’ from you and Jess Frank. It was much more comfortable for me and with much more success!

Hi Tom, how tall are you and what shaft weight/flex do you use? I'm 5'7 and I have 120 stiff shafts for my irons. I've been trying to apply S&T from watching your videos and constantly hitting 135yd for my 7iron. I wonder if it's the shaft weight/flex that limit the distance as I wish I could hit longer distance like you.
Hi Andy, I am just over 6'0". I was fitted for AeroTech Steel Fiber shafts in S-flex on my PXG's. I'm a big advocate of golfers getting their clubs professionally fitted. Not to question, however Ben Hogans Five lessons, page 68 to 73 guides for downswing to be “initiated” by turning hips to left and very small lateral movement left, shifting weight to left foot, is that not correct ?
Mr. Hogan delivered phenomenal and timeless instructional value, right?! But there are just so many misconceptions about his swing out there - particularly within the realm of misunderstood or misapplied instruction - that have sadly relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration. I'm doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness by taking what Mr. Hogan conveys in the “Five Lessons” book as his "feels", applying it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translating it into something we all can learn well from. Because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered. Hey Tom quick question, when I see you and other pros set up their iron swing, Their lead shoulder is slightly higher than their trail shoulder but mine seem to be quite level. Is there a problem with that or is my setup just wrong? As always thanks for the help! Josh
Hi Josh, There is nothing contrived about that. It is simply that the lead hand is higher than the trail hand when we take our grip, so barring any manipulations it is natural for the lead shoulder to be slightly higher than the trail shoulder. If your shoulders are level, then it could be that you are not properly setting your weight forward at address, and as a result it is causing your upper torso to lean towards the target. the prescribed setup in this regard has us addressing the ball "stacked" shoulders over hips over knees with our weight balanced 50/50. We then simply bump our hips one inch towards the target *_while keeping everything else in place._* This presets a little more weight forward while retaining the stacked relationship. Low point control. Check out the video he has where he talks about the left leg is a post and instead of shifting your weight to your right foot focus on keeping it on the left side. Like your left leg(thigh) has a short chain attached to it and to a post so you can’t shift away from it

It's simply a drill within the swing system I teach. It's designed to quiet overactive hips as demonstrated. If you tune in at around the 7:38 mark, you will hear me say that I'm going to take my hips out of play. That's when I closed the stance. Having said that, can you play with your stance closed like that? Sure. I've done it when I've sensed my hips were getting out of sequence on days when I didn't have access to the range. However, I don't necessarily recommend it as a "forever" thing as it can start to mess with our alignment and mechanics over the long haul. Tom

Eat at Franks Tom, the meat on top of the hips keeps them from firing early! A Manhattan to start, a great meal and the 14 layer caramel drizzle cake to finish *after* a quick 18 at the course of your choice (I won't plug the ones I like)!
The thing is that for most of us amateurs, the thought of accelerating from the shoulders leads to the arms rushing the tempo on the downswing and that makes it a very " handsy" swing. It just feels like you have no power coming from your strongest part ( the legs). I feel like the start of the downswing thought needs to be the legs and hips . The modern swing that we see from Rory and Gordon Sargent appears like hips completely opening up and shoulders staying square as long as possible, keeping that separation and coiled power until impact. Granted that is nearly impossible for us but i feel like if one keeps drilling that and you get even 50 % there, you'll unlock some serious power and shape on the ball. Your thoughts? ❓️❓️❓️
When properly deployed in the correct sequencing, our hips are a tremendous source of power. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line. The need for a weight shift in the golf swing is one of the greatest fallacies ever taught, and it has led many an amateur golfer into the vast abyss of chronic inconsistency and frustration. This system certainly allows for some transfer of pressure into the trail side during the takeaway. After all, we are moving the mass of the arms and club backwards during that initial stage of the swing. Some like to sense the dynamic pressure shifts; others prefer the feel of a gradual increasing of weight load into the lead leg from the start. However, in either scenario the key here is that we do not allow our mass - and thereby our swing center and low point - to drift back at any point. In the swing I teach we start with our weight forward (generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs), gradually add more forward weight load into the transition (70/30), 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. There's no "weight shift"; instead, it's just a gradually increasing load onto the lead side. And the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful motion. Please check out my free mini course as referenced in my previous reply. I started doing this on my driver swing literally just having the swing thought of just using my shoulders and then letting my hips follow and for me at least it’s been amazing results of a lot straighter and way more easy distance.

Tom, big fan of your videos. They are extremely helpful and to the point. This right here is something that I have been fighting for almost a year now on the course. I made some changes with my swing after being led to believe that initiating with the hips for both the back and the down were the way to go. I’ve lost so much distance from the driver down to the 43 and could never figure out why until now. So much momentum lost before connecting with the ball, as well as swaying off the ball with the hips led backswing. This video made so much sense, and I really cannot wait to try this tip out. Another great video. I’ve always been a left arm puller in the downswing. Guess who else was an admitted left arm puller? Moe Norman! He was a pretty good ball striker too! He said the right arm just goes along for the ride. If you have a little athleticism you can eventually learn how to coordinate the shoulders and hips in the downswing. I’m guilty of early extension like most amateurs are but it’s ok. It’s just golf and I enjoy it and I can still break 80 at times. 12 years ago I broke 70 several times but was much healthier and not as stiff. I’m 60 now. The golf swing takes what 1 second? How do you have time to think about pushing into the left hip, squatting,turning, pulling the left hip up?? I don’t think my body could ever learn to do this at my age without hurting my back even more. If you’re 8-9 yrs old then you have the agility for the body to memorize this move and then you will have it for a lifetime but older guys? Hang it up. True believer in letting the shoulders dictate the downswing.

Thank you Tom!! Your video really shows the result of just turning the hips. No one, and I mean no one has ever mentioned this to me during all the lessons I took over the years.
I think back to all the times I pulled a ball with different clubs or sliced with a driver and this was more than likely one of the main causes. I couldn't figure it out. One of my golf buddies (low single digit index) kept saying in to out but I couldn't get constant with it.
I tried what you mentioned on 2 different golf simulators and the result was exactly as you described. Even the arm and club positions were exactly as described / shown. The slight "bump" or forward push was the answer. Funny thing, never saw this mentioned on TV or here in TH-cam either.

I was early extending and tried everything. I started quieting my hips and controlled the swing with hands, arms, and shoulders. The results have been excellent. Great video!

Tom, I’ve been learning from you on your website and TH-cam before that. I started golfing 3-1/4 years ago and went from a 30 to 8.9 handicap in 2 years. I am now at a 10 secondary to more work and little practice/play.
My best friend and golfing buddy asked me how I improved so rapidly and I referred him to your website and he has already noticed much improved contact and low point control making golf more fun.

Implemented this today at an indoor golf simulator with trackman. Ive been noticing sporadic deep left glute pain, im assuming coming from firing my hips so much. Focused on delaying those hips and wow. Hit my best 7 iron ever, 120mph ball speed with a carry of 175. Felt smashed when hitting the club face. Still seeing im swinging ever so slightly out to in, if i feel like im forcing an in to out i still see an out to in club path on the trackman lol rather feel natural than forced so ill focus on tight fades.

On a personal note, my golfing buddy insists on firing hips. He keeps telling me all this stuff too. All these club positions and timing and all this other stuff. I'm like "why do you want/need all of those swing thoughts?" To be perfectly fair, he does beat me most of the time, but that's mainly because my game inside 100yds, chipping, and putting is atrocious and adds 10-15 shots per round, minimum. I liked one of your other videos in which you went through the motion of throwing a heavy weight: you have to use your hips, but hip motion isn't disconnected from your upper body; your entire body flows in the proper manner naturally.
Correct, Jim - the hips play a very important supportive role, and critical to this is that they must do so in accord with the proper sequencing. When properly deployed, our hips are a tremendous source of power. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off.

Yes. The proper sequencing is the key!!
Firing the hips as a way to start the downswing is very contentious and has become a murky way of teaching the golf swing. Teachers have told students this is what Hogan did. Hogan said the downswing started from the ground. Your hips are not on the ground. If you use the lower body to start the downswing you better fire your right side also. Jimmy Ballard has taught this move for over 50 years and people still get it wrong because they start with the hips, get immediately disconnected and have to throw their hands to hit the ball. You are absolutely correct Tom. Firing the hips is incorrect. Firing the right side with a connected body is a totally different teaching that few understand.

That's because we are all taught old school golf minutia. Everything is about hips and using hands and arms is bad, when it's quite the reverse. Just need good mechanics, timing and the hips will follow the upper torso.

As a former baseball player, firing the hips early and focusing too much on hip rotation has caused major issues with my swing. Thanks, Tom!
As a former baseball player myself, Kevin, I certainly get what your saying! There are certainly some similarities between baseball and golf, but also some considerable differences. So while that rotation comes naturally to us, what we are missing in golf is that little lateral stride towards the pitcher that keeps everything in check. Even if we just picked our lead foot up and put it down as a timing mechanism, it still served to keep us "inside the pitch" and in a loaded position to attack the ball.
In golf, when properly deployed in sequence our hips play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips in the golf swing acts as a governor on the rotational component, thereby enabling the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body (like the stride or toe-tap in baseball). It's also a move that you will notice with every great player. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while the head - and thus the swing center - remains in place.) This will occur naturally if we allow it to, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion - and/or that ingrained baseball rotation - has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. For them, the "feel" of the shoulders leading will help them to overcome this, correctly engage their hips, and fix their path, thereby leading them to a solid, "crispy" impact condition.

I am 73 years old and shoot in the high 80s to very low 90s. I almost gave up your style until reading this tip a few weeks ago. I am now starting to compress the ball more consistently, I had three back to back 80 rounds last week and enjoying my crispy fried chicken, still having trouble taking divots
I have been a member and follower for the past 2 to 3 golf seasons, firing my hips caused many S shots to the right ruining my round. Now I turn the shoulders and the hips follow., this fixed a lot of my problems,(low point in the swing and club face alignment) I am learning how to get more speed, firing the hips at the proper time

Hi Tom. Love your channel and your enthusiasm. May I respectfully offer my opinion. In all fairness, you are comparing apples and oranges. You can't mix fundamentals that pertain to one swing methodology with those of another. There are only 2 ways to move a golf shaft. You can pull it or you can push it. The Golfing Machine calls the puller a "swinger" and the pusher a "hitter" and the fundamentals for each are as different as day and night and can't be mixed together.
The term "fire the hips" is meant for pure swingers. Pure swingers use separation of hips and shoulders to tightly wind the upper body against the lower body (x-factor). During the transition they increase that coil (x-factor stretch) by "firing the hips" (hate that term. Will explain later) while the club is still moving back. This removes any slack between the upper and lower body and results in proper kinematic sequencing. The hips pull the torso which then pulls the shoulders, arms, hands and club around in sequence.
Your demonstration showing that the hips can fire without the shoulders moving only works because you have slack in the kinetic chain. It would be like attempting to pull a car with a rope that has 10 feet of slack in it, then pulling the rope for 3 feet and proclaiming that you can't move a car with a rope..lol
You were not fully wound up. If you were fully wound up and then fired the hips, the shoulders would follow and the right elbow would drop into the slot and the clubhead would approach the ball from the inside. The beauty of this method is that it is fully automatic. There is no release of the club to time. Centrifugal/centripetal force does it for you.
Now, why I dislike the term "fire the hips" or "belly button to the target". That can cause people to "spin" the hips (which is what you were demonstrating). That's bad news. There is a lateral shift of the hips first , before they "spin" (rotate). The good news is that you don't have to think about that. There is a better swing thought than "fire the hips".
During the transition, instead of thinking "fire the hips", think of shifting your weight from the back foot to the front foot by pushing off of your rear foot. I like how Greg Norman put it , he said "the downswing begins with the leadership of your right leg". So just push off that right foot and shift your weight to the front foot and that will take care of the lateral move of the hips and the eventual rotational move ,without thinking about it. Everything will then be automatically pulled along in sequence. Remember how Norman's right foot would slide? Scotty Scheffler does it too. They are pushing hard with the rear foot. They are not thinking "fire the hips", or "belly button to the target".
This method requires passive arms and hands. They just come along for the ride. Trying to add power with the right hand is the kiss of death. You would more often than not disrupt centrifugal/centripetal force from doing its job and that can be ugly, especially in the short game.
Many pure swingers will grip the club VERY lightly with the right hand. The club is held with the last 3 fingers of the left hand. If you want proof of how lightly the right hand grips the club with some players on tour, look at slow motion videos of Fred Couples and VJ Singh, and note how the right hand almost comes off the club through impact. It's an insurance policy against the right hand adding power.
This method btw is hard to master and requires flexibility and good strength in the lead arm. For those who have mastered it, it is a great thing to not have to worry about timing a release and getting ball then ground contact every time. It's driving a car with an automatic tranny vs a manual one where you have to time the shifting of the gears.
Imo, your method does not depend on kinematic sequencing. You are using brute muscular power from the right side of your body to push the shaft. You are a "hitter". So the hips only have one job. To get out of the way to make room for the hands and club to come from the inside. You don't need along back swing. See Jon Rahm and Tony Finau. Very short backswings.
If I'm wrong and you are pulling the shaft via the upper body (shoulders as you say in the video) and leaving the big muscles of the lower body passive, then you are giving up a lot of power potential.
It's actually a great method for the wedge game, where full power is not essential. You basically "drag" the shaft through the ball using your shoulders and arms along with a little lower body movement to give the swing some rhythm.
While I certainly appreciate all the detail in your message, it is far too much for me to be able to respond to piece by piece in this forum! In more general terms, it is important to understand that I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. Hey, Tom. Where is the smooth tilt to the right? The long,smooth right tilt in the downswing and the butt tuck and extension at the end.. You lost those in this video. Don't desert your roots. You don't start pulling or throwing the club off the chest until the rt.elbow passes the rt.hip in a snap release . It is a centrifugal force swing. The smooth tilt drops the shoulder,arms hands and club in a strait line. This helps increase the wrist cock,keeps the club light and moving in a straight line to store power.Now the hip turn produces the centrifugal force that throws the club down out and forward toward the ball. Lag and the lt.wrist releasing make the club feel more heavy which slows the hands allowing club head and face to extend into the ball to the both arms straight position 3 feet past the ball. Like cracking a whip. This is all in The Stack and Tilt book. Keeps me playing at age 82. Low score this year, 76 from senior tees of course.

🔥 You hit the nail directly on the head again, Tom. Another misconception exposed. Whenever I try leading with the hips in the downswing = Results are a steep, over the top, outside to in, lunge at the ball, and it's just disastrous. 😣

For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor on the rotational component, thereby enabling the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a very powerful move that you will notice with every great player. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while the head - and thus the swing center - remains in place.) This will occur naturally if we allow it to, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. For them, the "feel" of the shoulders leading will help them to overcome this, correctly engage their hips, and fix their path, thereby leading them to a solid, "crispy" impact condition.

I have been struggling with this method for a long time now. Whenever I try to add a little extra (or more) in the downswing with this "firing the hips" method, my game ends up in the same, damn, horrible place. Agree firing the hips is a misnomer. It’s about getting that left side posted prior to impact so energy from the ground is transferred into the ball. For example, tiger had knee issues from snapping that left lead leg back, this pulls the left hip back and right hips forward to the target and has to happen prior to impact.
Yes, but here's the thing - there's no need to leave the lead side to begin with. This system certainly allows for some transfer of pressure into the trail side during the takeaway. After all, we are moving the mass of the arms and club backwards during that initial stage of the swing. Some like to sense the dynamic pressure shifts; others prefer the feel of a gradual increasing of weight load into the lead leg from the start. However, in either scenario the key here is that we do not allow our mass - and thereby our swing center and low point - to drift back at any point.
As for the ground, it is static and not a source of golf swing "energy" in and of itself. We could stand on the ground in an athletic posture all day long, and the ground will just remain there and do nothing. It is the dynamic actions of a properly executed motion - for example, the flexing/straightening of the lead leg - that allows us to leverage the ground, much like a high jumper does.
When properly deployed in the correct sequencing, our hips are a tremendous source of power. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. Thanks so much for the video. I totally agree with you. I was a hip player for many years and my back has now started to rebel against my.swing. I am 69 years old and a life long golfer. Mid single digit handicap. My new feel to start the downswing is to fire my right shoulder towards the ball. Kind of replacing my left shoulder with my right shoulder. It is new and I need more practice and sometimes I do come over the top and steep. A work in progress but your video will help me get the feel even better.

Ok - I am loving this approach. Just getting started, and I've also taken 2 lessons from a local club pro - he's been helping, but this week's lessons - it was kind of hilarious - he said "you're swing is much better this time!" - and secretly I knew that I'd not really been able to remember his tips from the first lesson, but I've been starting to work on Tom's approach! 😅
It's still a little difficult to un-twist my brain from the hips-first, weight shifting approach that it seems everyone else teaches!

@@SagutoGolf@SagutoGolf I'm prbly going to sign up - but the reason I'm clinging a bit to in-person instruction, is that my biggest challenge is actually knowing what my body has actually done on a given swing - short of videoing every f'ing swing in a session, and then reviewing in detail (and, ideally in real time) I need that immediate feedback from a knowledgeable set of eyes to say "this is what your body did".
Sigh - I'll do a couple more sessions with dude because he's not the type that gives detailed instruction in every tiny element - he's looking at club path mostly.
Having said that - yes, it does get confusing and I've still not gotten to the point where I can easily repeat the swing I'm looking for.

Your videos are the best and have helped me get back into the game of golf over this past year faster than I could have imagined possible....I watched this latest video as carefully as I could and I noticed that your lead knee seems to move toward the target a split second first before your shoulders or hips. Your shoulders definitely move first before the hips, but it makes me concentrate too hard to move my shoulders first before my hips, so I have tried a few practice swings in my office (too cold to be outside) where I start my swing by moving my lead knee to the target a split second first and then my shoulders and hips seem to fall into sequence in that order and it feels really good. Granted , I haven't taken this to the range, yet, but this also seems to keep me from leaning backward in my swing which has been a reoccurring problem for me. Could I use the lead knee as a trigger, or do you think it will throw off my swing? Thanks again for all you do?

So counter intuitive to what we have all learned in the past....... but I believe it to be true. We are used to "ground up", ie like a screw, ground, hips, torso with lag, and use the pelvis as an engine. No the pelvis only drops for ground force, and the shoulders and legs drive and follow the hips. It has changed the way I teach, and my students love it.
I know, David, right? I agree, but it does look like your hips move first, but you are not jamming them through. Not rushing the hips is what i take from this. I tried so hard in the past to rush my hip turn that I chunked the ball or pressure the ball right. Thanks for the reminder.

1). Is this basically the idea of keeping your back to the target at the initiation of the downswing? It’s an old concept, but I never heard it applied to an S&T swing. Game changer for me if true.
2). What is the first motion of the downswing for you, lateral movement of the hips (not firing), or pulling down on the club? Or are they simultaneous?

I'd hesitate to refer to it as a "back to the target" action as that conjures up the notion of disassociating our upper and lower bodies in such away that it could cause stress on the lower back and detract from the body-friendliness of this motion. Instead, consider that the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a very powerful move that you will notice with every great player. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your mouse pointer on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while the head - and thus the swing center - remains in place.) Firing your hips first is what might be observed in the kinematic sequence.
Moving the hands and club in space is what happens in the kinetic sequence.
Anyone stating the hips move first is commenting on effect, not cause.
The muscles that fire first are in the obliques, but they are moving to stabilise and not to move the club.
So you may still get comments saying you need to move the hips first but it is mistaken and they are open to rollercoaster shoot 80-95 all the time.

Hey Tom great thought provoking video, this coming from a guy who has struggled with hip spinning/sliding in the down swing. I do feel like I can’t generated enough speed. Does speed and power come from how quickly you move your shoulders?

The shoulders are absolutely a primary contributor to swing speed. In fact, once your sequencing - and thus your path - are properly grooved to where you can fully trust it, you should find that you'll be able to confidently rotate your shoulders as hard as you wish. I ask myself who even fires their hips like that, but so many people do it wrong. Coming from a baseball background, you just swing and everything follows like you said. It's about timing and swinging on that plane. Mike Malaska said it best...the golf swing is like throwing underhand
Go to any practice range and you'll see it all fully on display. Consider that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within the realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, firing the hips, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). I’m doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness, and I'm glad to know that my instruction content is resonating with you in this regard!

I noticed that your trail arm wraps around your chest after you hit the ball . Does that help with your aim or is it just how I should be finishing my swing?

That is just the result of a well-connected swing. Think of Tommy Fleetwood, for example. (There are several others, but he just came to mind first.) We should endeavor to maintain our upper arm attachments throughout the entire motion. A good drill for this is to stick a tee under each armpit and try to keep them there from setup to finish.

I've taken it to the course on occasion if I'm working on quieting the hips and felt like playing instead of going to the range. I might also deploy it mid-round if I sense those hips are getting too active. While I find that I can still hit it a long way like that, I prefer a square stance because I find it more supportive of proper alignment and facilitative of a free-flowing motion through to the finish. But that's me. If it serves you well and is not causing you any issues, then let your ball striking and shot shape be your guide!

I tend to disagree, but depending on our terminology, we might be saying the same thing. The torso and spine is much more connected than any of the other joints. So I say absolutely, spin the hips relative to the legs, but that’s going to bring the torso and chest with it. Now there’s more motion again with the shoulder girdle and the shoulder joint. I’m currently thing the torso turns underneath the shoulder girdle, making it rock up to the left, but I’m still working on this.😮❤

Didn't have enough power or consistency, and was told to lead with the hips instead.
Then realized I keep on 'toe-ing' the ground, always firing straight right and getting arms stuck behind me....power still terrible and flipping the damn club.
You just displayed my exact issue.
Instead of being 'armsy', I was using the hips and forgetting the shoulders because 'they'll follow'.....well, newsflash.....they don't.
I'm getting back on the mat and start bringing those shoulders back in ....get my distance and draw back

I just played this weekend and I got thru 12 holes hitting the ball well then all of a sudden I was hitting horribly fat or horribly thin and just pounding the ball straight down. It was frustrating because I knew I was too steep but couldn’t figure out what was causing it. I will try this tomorrow

One problem that can occur during or after a good round or practice session is when we say to ourselves, "Now I've got this." That's an open invitation to our old swing demons, and they never miss an opportunity to haunt. We get a little too relaxed, a little too loose. We let our guard down. One swing element starts to break down, and then the chain reaction begins. A couple of things that can help us get through this on the fly while playing include:
1) Having a reliable “default swing” that you can dial up mid-round when you sense that you are beginning to leak some oil. You may not hit it as far, but you'll keep it in play and minimize the damage.
2) Knowing your tendencies, their early warning signs, and how to neutralize them before they wreak havoc.

Thank you. I do understand the firing first but I think most must have a good flexibility to be consistent. I def begin to come over the top. I’ll focus on this now. Hit a few balls into my net and already feels better. Now I’m working on keeping my left arm straight and not bending my left wrist or bowing a bit vs bending it toward my watch. Any tips there?

One thing, and I'd think the most important thing that never seems to be addressed in golf tutorials is strength. I'd say the number one reason most people struggle at golf is because they're not strong enough. To hit a ball well, and far, not only do you need reasonably good equipment, a good swing, good mental strength and be able to visualise the shot you want to play, but you need to be strong. Most golfers watching thee videos are golfers who don't work out consistently or practice consistently so they don't have the muscles and ligaments in their hands, wrists, forearms, lats, core, shoulders, legs, calves, ankles and feet strong enough to swing like the pros who do.
While I have no issue with proper strength conditioning and do partake in it myself, a well-executed is a sequential orchestration of motions that harnesses physics and geometry with multiplicative - seemingly exponential - results with regard to compression and distance. Mr. Hogan stood around 5"7" tall and was probably less than 150 lbs in his prime, and seemingly more often than not there was a cigarette hanging out of his mouth 😎, and he absolutely bombed it. There are plenty of other examples of great players who were either small in stature, out of shape, or both, but regardless - the mission of my instruction business is to help golfers get the most out of the game they love in a simplified, body-friendly manner, and it just plain works as validated by the thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges, shapes, sizes, and physical conditions - who are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews.

Strength isn't always visible as i'm sure you know, hitting 100's of balls everyday will strengthens all the golfing muscles, ligaments and tendons but you won't be able to see it. Most club golfers aren't doing that or working out, so struggle for consistency and power because everything's too weak. You won't know this until you take 6 months to a year off and do nothing. Trying to do what you were doing consistently is very difficult until you build yourself back up to where you were@@SagutoGolf
If I may add to this excellent video: if you start your downswing by moving your lead arm off the chest, keeping your trail leg straight and then making sure your trail shoulder goes under your chin, you'll hit the best shots of your life. These are all things I learned from Tom's instructional website.

I was always told to leave the chest behind longer as your "fire your hips". But this is coming from someone that has always been upper body dominant trying to "control" the swing. However, led me to most of the time always be very steep. The point of leaving my chest behind longer is so that the club would shallow. Agree with that method? I'm going to the range now to try your method of having the left pocket drive towards the target and see if that helps me. 🤞

As I specifically mentioned at around the 7:38 mark, I dropped my trail foot back to quiet the hips and enhance the feel of the shoulders driver the motion. This is a "drill" setup that anyone can use to accomplish the same. My actual stance is square - or parallel - to the target line.

Wow, "you must have big balls to play (golf) with pink pants in Texas" as some cowboy told swedish golf playerJesper Parnevik some years ago. I must apply the same first words from that phrase to you Tom that now so boldly challenge the old truth that the downswing start by separating the hip from the rest of the body "because it should be out of the way for the club and hands" . Dropping the trail foot back as I demonstrated in the video is a drill that I will recommend if a golfer has overactive hips in the downswing. When properly deployed in sequence our hips play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor on the rotational component, thereby enabling the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a move that you will notice with every great player. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while the head - and thus the swing center - remains in place.) This will occur naturally if we allow it to, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. For them, the "feel" of the shoulders leading will help them to overcome this, correctly engage their hips, and fix their path, thereby leading them to a solid, "crispy" impact condition.

A while back I paid for a couple months of your service, It was very helpful.
One of my problems with hip turning is I spent three years with Paul Wilson, Red shirt guy from Las Vegas.
He’s all about the hips firing and arms going along for the ride. He made it sound interesting but I really had to reteach myself after I learn ‘stack and tilt’ from you and Jess Frank. It was much more comfortable for me and with much more success!

Indeed, David, the hips play an important supportive role in a variety of athletic actions, but if they don't submit to the proper sequencing and instead seize control of the motion the results are typically less than desirable.

I have found with the stack n tilt swing just sliding the left knee slowly forward to start momentum.
That is certainly an effective downswing trigger, Michael, and it is one that I do teach as it is an excellent way to initiate the lateral targetward action of the hips. This acts as a governor on the rotational component, thereby enabling the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a move that you will notice with every great ball striker. In more general terms, I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and results. This is one reason why the comprehensive, structured, step-by-step learning platform of my online school is so effective, and why it will make for a far more efficient, superior, and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through these channel videos that jump around randomly from topic to topic. The sequential lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness.

"Swing your swing" is fine if done within the parameters of a proven system, otherwise we'll likely be diving down rabbit holes searching for the next "fix" for the rest of our golfing days. Hi Tom, how tall are you and what shaft weight/flex do you use? I'm 5'7 and I have 120 stiff shafts for my irons. I've been trying to apply S&T from watching your videos and constantly hitting 135yd for my 7iron. I wonder if it's the shaft weight/flex that limit the distance as I wish I could hit longer distance like you.

I am just over 6'0". I was fitted for AeroTech Steel Fiber shafts in S-flex on my PXG's.

Not to question, however Ben Hogans Five lessons, page 68 to 73 guides for downswing to be “initiated” by turning hips to left and very small lateral movement left, shifting weight to left foot, is that not correct ?
Mr. Hogan delivered phenomenal and timeless instructional value, right?! But there are just so many misconceptions about his swing out there - particularly within the realm of misunderstood or misapplied instruction - that have sadly relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration. I'm doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness by taking what Mr. Hogan conveys in the “Five Lessons” book as his "feels", applying it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translating it into something we all can learn well from. Because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered.

Hey Tom quick question, when I see you and other pros set up their iron swing, Their lead shoulder is slightly higher than their trail shoulder but mine seem to be quite level. Is there a problem with that or is my setup just wrong?

Hi Josh,
There is nothing contrived about that. It is simply that the lead hand is higher than the trail hand when we take our grip, so barring any manipulations it is natural for the lead shoulder to be slightly higher than the trail shoulder. If your shoulders are level, then it could be that you are not properly setting your weight forward at address, and as a result it is causing your upper torso to lean towards the target. the prescribed setup in this regard has us addressing the ball "stacked" shoulders over hips over knees with our weight balanced 50/50. We then simply bump our hips one inch towards the target *_while keeping everything else in place._* This presets a little more weight forward while retaining the stacked relationship.

Low point control. Check out the video he has where he talks about the left leg is a post and instead of shifting your weight to your right foot focus on keeping it on the left side. Like your left leg(thigh) has a short chain attached to it and to a post so you can’t shift away from it

Tom, do you like the idea of playing with the trail foot staggered back? If so, are there any pitfalls?
It's simply a drill within the swing system I teach. It's designed to quiet overactive hips as demonstrated. If you tune in at around the 7:38 mark, you will hear me say that I'm going to take my hips out of play. That's when I closed the stance.
Having said that, can you play with your stance closed like that? Sure. I've done it when I've sensed my hips were getting out of sequence on days when I didn't have access to the range. However, I don't necessarily recommend it as a "forever" thing as it can start to mess with our alignment and mechanics over the long haul.

Eat at Franks Tom, the meat on top of the hips keeps them from firing early! A Manhattan to start, a great meal and the 14 layer caramel drizzle cake to finish *after* a quick 18 at the course of your choice (I won't plug the ones I like)!

The thing is that for most of us amateurs, the thought of accelerating from the shoulders leads to the arms rushing the tempo on the downswing and that makes it a very " handsy" swing. It just feels like you have no power coming from your strongest part ( the legs). I feel like the start of the downswing thought needs to be the legs and hips .
The modern swing that we see from Rory and Gordon Sargent appears like hips completely opening up and shoulders staying square as long as possible, keeping that separation and coiled power until impact.
Granted that is nearly impossible for us but i feel like if one keeps drilling that and you get even 50 % there, you'll unlock some serious power and shape on the ball.

Hi Tom, but what do you do with weight shift when you start with upperbody?
The need for a weight shift in the golf swing is one of the greatest fallacies ever taught, and it has led many an amateur golfer into the vast abyss of chronic inconsistency and frustration. This system certainly allows for some transfer of pressure into the trail side during the takeaway. After all, we are moving the mass of the arms and club backwards during that initial stage of the swing. Some like to sense the dynamic pressure shifts; others prefer the feel of a gradual increasing of weight load into the lead leg from the start. However, in either scenario the key here is that we do not allow our mass - and thereby our swing center and low point - to drift back at any point. In the swing I teach we start with our weight forward (generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs), gradually add more forward weight load into the transition (70/30), 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. Indeed he did!
Hogan clearly had the ideal blend of lateral and rotational hip action from the transition through impact as addressed in this video from my channel's old archives - th-cam.com/video/iejRWhuB7y8/w-d-xo.html - but an overemphasis on the rotational in instruction is what has led so many amateurs - or "hip spinners" - astray.

Mr. H. also referred to golf as "a side-long game". & spent a lot of time describing the proper swing-plane (tilted sheet of glass analogy). If rotational forces were a super-huge factor, he would've brought them up more than. he did.@@SagutoGolf
