You all know I’m a hot hatch fanatic and for years the Golf R was never spicy enough for me. While a great daily driver I found it to be a bit uninspiring. That all changes with this generation! This rear torque vectoring adds a whole new dimension to the driving experience that gets the rear wheels helping to rotate the car out of corners. For those not yet ready to make the electric switch or for those who want a more engaging drive, I can’t think of a better performance daily driver. I also love how the car still retains adaptive cruise control and lane centering even with the manual transmission!
Hi Kyle: As far as the adaptive cruise control and lane centering goes, I'm guessing it disengages at a low speed to prevent the car from stalling? Or does it stop anyways even if it means that the car will stall?
What's the price?
@@EM.1. 43000 usd
Kyle ,are you and friends going to drive this Golf full throttle on racetrack !!!! I love it when you go on high speed track and everybody else holds on for dear life 👍🇨🇦 Yes that blue is great
First car was an 04' R32 in deep blue pearl. Had i known what they'd be worth today I never would have sold it.
Also, thank you for NOT complaining about the "infotainment" system. What a great review!
I actually really like the infotainment! - Kyle
VW need to hear it, its awful. 😅(And buggy)
Why wouldn't you complain? Touch sensitive buttons are not it in terms of using them while you drive. It's even worse that vw couldn't spare a few cents and make the volume slider and climate buttons light up
That thing rips! Glad they turned it up from prior gen R and new S3 and actually made it so you can have fun. I couldn’t get the US S3 to rotate at all and while fast, it wasn’t very fun.
I would like to see Golf GTI colors on the Golf R
Was all set to order a Tesla M3P for next year, not sure after this video.
Love watching all your car videos Kyle! They’re definitely top notch keep it up 👍
Did I hear pops while you were cruising c: ? I think I did. I am really excited to pick one up next year in black with the 6-speed MT.
I love the blue! I have a 2019 Golf R in Grey. I looked everywhere for Blue but couldn't find one. Very excited to check out the MK8 when it starts arriving in dealerships
How does it feel to drive 🚗 golf 8?
Just came across your video and can I say so jealous! Wish we could get the manual here in Europe! Also because we also have the base models, the performance pack on the R is and extra £2000 (maybe about $3200) which gives an uprated top speed to 168mph, the extended carbon spoiler and couple of other things. Love this car, waiting on the new R estate coming out but the chip shortage is seriously messing things up! Great video 👍🇮🇪
Why would they not sell the manual in Europe?!
@@DaciaProject havent a clue, we have some of the best back roads to put the Golf R to good use!
Thanks for the great content. Awesome drive along!👍🇺🇸 Perfectly executed driving experience through a lens!
Love the blue stitching on that Golf and it's a beautiful car. Kudos to VW for offering a US manual transmission. Golf R is a winner. Always love your enthusiasm Kyle.
great video and nice driving!
Have you driven a Veloster N? Somebody that has driven both it would be nice to hear their thoughts.
I Wish Ford would do this with The Focus, Fiesta ST & RS! Just offer the Top Trims💡
I love how much fun you had driving the 2022 R. Like you, I also like the lack of buttons even though a lot of folks have panned it. Not a big deal. And God bless WV for gracing us in the US and Canada with the manual transmission option.
Can't wait to start seeing them at dealership's I'd love to take the dsg for a spin
Awesome review.
Wow looks like a great car never owned one but this one seems pretty cool.
Once again, the Germans got it right.
Well, except for the reliability factor.
@@mowcowbell explain ? Have you ever had a golf before ?
@@davidG15 my wife has a 2018 golf alltrack. It is a wonderful machine to drive, however I have used my AAA card only 3 times and they were all on this car. My 2015 wrx? Not a single incident..that’s what he is talking about.
Over here in the UK the Golf Series, GTD,GTI, R variant are massive sellers, i see this new updated editon selling like hot cakes
I can't believe you can't get the R with a manual here though! Seems very strange that we'd lose the manual but the US would get it.
@@ApurtureSci agreed, we the kings of manuals in Europe
So Z will have 400hp Sti have around 400hp and golf R is staying same?
Previous gen golf r was 30hp less . So no it’s not the same 😂
Does anyone know when the golf R will officially come out to purchase because im going to buy the new R 🔥🔥
Let's go ahead and buy 1 because am also gonna buy 1
Why would they not sell the manual in Europe?!
Faster up the canyon than a mod 3 performance with upgraded brakes and kw v3 suspension or similar?
Indeed specifically with the available turbo through the whole road Basically. This thing is a beast stock and with minimal tune and turbo outlet larger & downpipe fixed, will then be unleashed . Stage 1 is more than enough with the right components and all season sport Michelin fat tires. The low profile skinny tires will only ruin the car gradually
@@Alcott-jn7gb ok. Because I drive way faster with my 3perf upgraded than the model before this one
can you revisit with the base gti s trim??
So did Kyle cancel his Golf R? I did a video search and it was just this one and the video where he said he ordered a Lapiz Blue 6MT. He’s had no other content with the car.
Can you shut off rev matching? Im one of the few that doesn't like it
SUbscribed! Great video, Kyle. Looking forward to the upgrades you are considering on your Mk8.
Tail of the dragon like road!
I have to say, I really enjoyed your review! I’m guessing if you were in the market for a car right now, you wouldn’t even bother waiting to see what the upcoming 2022 STI had to offer.
Well. This video made my mind up. definitely going to trade my Outback in for a golf r if I can find one for less than $10,000 over msrp. Was deciding between the R and the GTI.
I just traded in my 2020 STI for this in white w/manual. Interior quality of this vehicle and lighting are up there with mercedes benz. I've owned M5s, c63s, m3/m4... this car won't dissapoint.
Thanks, Kyle, for a real-world rip in my neck of the woods. Are these cars at a local dealership? Asheville VW hasn't received any that I know of; they've only gotten deposits.
The last gen Golf R's manual is said to be kind of bad, how is it in the MK8 now?
bad how? The complaints mostly were from people who tuned them for way more power and whined the clutch couldn't handle it.
@@MrDsn112 I meant in clutch pedal feel, shift knob engagement, etc.
@@gns942 I didn’t think it was bad. Very easy to depress the pedal. Never felt any way about the shifts themselves.
Damn my next car
Did you mean the only Market in North America not the U.S?
Have you driven the DSG yet, I'd like to know the comparison??
Always great to see and hear your reactions! Btw, who's the fella behind you? Stay safe!
Love it!!! Always did love how VW turbos make max torque low and hold it for freaking ever up the power band. Great video. I still miss my Mk4 Jetta with the 1.8t and 5M.
There definitely a whole different animal once you tune em I have the previous version of the R I'm intagrated engineering stg2 pushing close 440hp it definitely boogies
Which is more fun to drive? This or the Model 3 Performance?
Yea Kyle, what is more fun?
What area of the country are you in?
Awesome video!
Redline about a minute after startup…oh well guess it’s not his car. Sure hope it won’t be mine.
I love my mk7 R but the mk8 just ain’t it for me, I want the new RS3
A car on a mission that can also be used as a daily driver. 😬
Does it have auto rev-matching..?
No, thankfully - Kyle
@@OutofSpecReviews That’s a shame
Let’s see what the guys that have put the Golf R on the road can do with the ID.3 😶🌫️
Rev match?
No sir. No cheating here. DSG - Yes.
Hit me up if you’re ever NC and want to drive a spicier one. My Mk7.5 rips. Would be interested to get your impression on the difference the new diffs and vectoring make. Anything that reduces understeer would be great in my book.
Love the golf, it's simply really good as an all around vehicle. I have a e golf and its so awesome to drive. But a golf with a manual transmission is so good as well
Folkswagon 😭👍
Not really liking the new Golf R wing :(
While the power train certainly is impressive, I just can’t stomach the 8th gen design. Much cheaper interior quality, removal of buttons, especially climate control dials is just dumb. Who actually wants to navigate menus to change the climate controls? Looks like it wants to be a SpaceX cockpit, rather than a car built for driving enthusiasts. I’ll keep my 2015 Golf a bit longer and switch to a Mazda MX-5 or Subaru BRZ for my next car. Sorry VW, you lost me on this one.
It’s the future my dude. Most cars are going to this haptic feedback design . Gotta move with the times.
The R stands for retrograde.
And people spend more than this on an EV hatch....why?
If you are buying a Golf R, DSG is the way to go. The car is seriously handicapped with a manual.
The only thing that would handicap a car like this in a manual transmission is the driver #SAVETHEMANUALS
@@bryansugar3401 Having a manual transmission doesn’t automatically make the car better. It’s well know that the Golf R performs far better with the DSG transmission.
@@vr6gls outperforming and handicapping are not the same thing. I'll take the car that's more fun to drive over 15 lb-ft of extra torque. Unless you're planning on exclusively racing against other Rs, I don't see this as being a problem.
@@vr6gls Who cares? A manual makes any car more FUN.
@@486DX40 Who cares?? Really?? Lmfao!! 🤣🤣🤣
The people with the purchasing power care dude. Why else do you think so few manufacturers offer manual transmissions now? It’s because people don’t want them. Especially when modern autos are faster, more efficient, more convenient and offer almost the same control as a manual does.
Btw, “engagement” is a subjective opinion. I find the DSG in my current MK7 GTI to be just as engaging as my 6-speed manual MK4 GLI. On all objective fronts, DSG is better. That’s not even debatable.
It should be offered in a 2 door configuration.
the point of a golf is to be an all rounder hatch back with great controls and can be used as a daily driver
@@Shortsfortheday21 My daily drivers don’t need 4 doors.
They stopped offering the 2 door model cos not enough people were interested enough to buy them.
