VW is forced to squeeze every penny of profit out of the Golf due to their massive losses with EV’s (as well as Dieselgate). Unfortunately this results in lower quality interiors (which used to be a differentiator for VW), no knobs for climate controls, low resolution cameras and in general a vehicle that is less competitive with Japanese and Korean alternatives.
@@roch145it’s been nearly 10 years since the diesel thing. VW are the second largest automaker in the world. Don’t make out Japanese or Korean or French cars in this class are built with fine materials either. They aren’t. They are all cutting costs trying to run 2 entirely different lineups at once, plus with Euro 6/7 regulations of emissions that add at least £5k to the cost of the average car, is why car manufacturers are genuinely having a rough time of it. Volvo have put nearly all controls in the screen, no speakers in the doors, no switches to save on production costs so everything is as close to the middle of the car. They are all at it.
@@Olliebobalong The problem with Dieselgate (even though it was 8 years ago) is it cost VW at least $15 billion. They lost market share. They lost brand loyalty. They lost sales. You see more innovation in Japanese brands (especially style and quality from Mazda) as well as Korean brands. VW continues to devalue their brand and market niche with all of their cost cutting. The market share losses in the US are staggering. Bad management, poor leadership, too conservative in their design philosophy. All have contributed to losses. VW products always seem to come up short compared to the competition. In the US, nothing of VW’s German heritage is in their products. In the US, you can’t get an ID4 with a heat pump, which improves range and efficiency, while competitors offer heat pumps. The ID4 comes with drum brakes, to save money, while competitors have disk brakes. As far as emissions requirements, all manufacturers are tasked with the same challenge. Unfortunately, government regulators are using emissions regulations as a mechanism to force the termination of ICE vehicles. The European politicians are doing a wonderful job killing their auto and manufacturing businesses. The thought police are empowered now and emboldened. This is what you get when you elect socialists.
The MK7.5 is hands down the best version out there. Why? Because it keeps things simple and practical. Unlike newer cars that make you rely on touchscreens for everything, the MK7.5 has physical controls for stuff like heating, ventilation, and volume. You can adjust these without taking your eyes off the road, which is super handy. Plus, the quality is top notch. It’s got that perfect mix of modern tech, like Apple CarPlay, without shoving a huge infotainment screen in your face. I currently drive a Golf 7.5 and even that has commonly used functions that are only available via the screen, including changing the driving mode. Hiding basic functions on a touch screen is really annoying, and is one of the reasons I won’t buy another VW. At least they’ve fixed the steering wheel issue that people were having, now they just need to fix everything else they’ve broken. I remember reading that Nissan has said they won’t put commonly used features, such as driving modes, temperature controls, etc, on the screen because they consider it to be distracting and dangerous. Using the GPT API doesn't mean it's GPT, it means it's using the audio to text GPT model to convert what you say into a request that already exists in the VW OS, it's basically just a conversion kit to take what you say and find the most likely VW System item that you might be referring to. To integrate GPT fully would require VW to pay for API tokens for every single request you have and future owners etc.. and that would eventually cost VW more than the money they make on the car. The GPT API is not cheap to use.
I have an opinion on why VW doesn't bring the standard Golf into the states. I think if people saw that a standard Golf cost a lot less than a GTI or an R , shoppers may choose the less expensive choice rather than the two cash cows GTi and R.

My biggest gripe about my GTI is the lack of rear space. I once had a 2007 Nissan Versa 6spd manual hatchback (bought it brand new for $12k insane right!!). When it comes to servicing these tablets I'm guessing that it's a lot easier to pull off a little trim strip, remove a couple of screws and then unplug it. Service would be a replacement for a new tablet. Sounds a lot smarter than pulling the dash apart to pull out the built in screen.
the touch screen climate controls are funny ...people actually pay premium for vw too lol compare it to a mazda 3 interior
Surely that massive feckin iPad stuck in the centre of the dashboard to change settings is a distraction 😂

I'm driving a car, not head bent over a smart phone flicking up and down watching tiktok rubbish. My last drive was 3 hours in length, I didn't touch the screen the entire time, had no need to.
The extended part of the compartment in the door, where you lost your key, is actually meant for the safety vest. This way, the driver and passenger have it immediately at hand and it doesn’t take up too much space. Greetings from Bavaria.
Also meant to hold a compact umbrella. Matt must be accelerating too hard if his keys keep sliding back there.
@@roch145As a Japanese, Japanese cars are never as good as German’s. Not to mention Korean cars are.

It’s all about balance, you get the cool tech you need without the distractions you don’t. The MK7.5 just gets it right.
Yet there still is no dials for the HVAC controls. Flimsy slide button. Mk7 and 7.5 were the best design in my opinion
Specifically the 7.5 with the LED package. Those double-L Helix front headlightd are * Chefs Kiss. 2019 7.5 Golf R is a thing of beauty. These 2020+ models are diarhea turds.
Manufactures either didn't research of totally ignored the function and saftey of these devices. With knobs your can feel what you want. With sliders, you always have to look. Not to mention, its messy. With my OCD I'd have to own stock in wipes. The screen cleaning type, of course.

Huge amount of the grille open, more space for stones to hit the radiator!
Glad to see they have addressed a lot of the issues. But a Golf should be the definition of "go right ahead and buy it", let's hope they can find their way back to that level.
My friend returned it IMMEDIATELY. There is a issue with car lock remote. Service said this happens in 2024 models. You need to walk away 40metres away to unlock the car. It goes to sleep mode for no reason. His wife & kids got stuck at the market and thank god they weren't far away and I went to help them with my 1998 Mitsubishi Carisma. My friend was so pissed and if they didn't accept it back, he was going to sue.
He is about to buy new BMW 1 series. I just went to vacation with 1 series, 2600kilometres visiting ancient cities etc. Comfort mode was mind blowing through corners etc. My gf said normally she get s sick but she is surprised she didnt.
They definitely have a point.
You can change the driving mode on your 7.5 without even once using the touchscreen. Just press your Mode button multiple times.
@@AG-yc9bh If I press driving mode all I get is a prompt on the screen, pressing it again just turns the prompt off. Nothing changes unless I select it via the screen.
@@ffotograffydd maybe you have to go to the VW dealer and get it fixed. I have a 7.5 GTI built in 2019. I press "MODE" once and it brings up the screen with the choices. When I press it again, it cycles through the modes and also confirms every selected mode in the instrument (speedo) display.
@@AG-yc9bh Maybe that’s a feature on high-end Golfs? It’s definitely not a fault with my car, I’ve already asked at VW.
And regardless, even if it worked as you described you still need to reach down to the button, which is obscured by the gear stick and then look at the screen to cycle through. It’s not the best set up or particularly user friendly.
00:13 my 2016 golf does that
Wow, it’s definitely better than the last one! This version is actually interesting now!
