VW Golf R Mk8 vs our Golf GTI Mk5 - ROUND 1 | PH Project Car Pt.2

- What's the gulf between the Golfs? We pit our stock GTI against a Golf R 20 Years on track to see how much of an up-hill battle we face...
Well, we say stock, but we've made some slight modifications to prevent our GTI from blowing up the moment it heads out on a hot lap. Our first port of call is a visit to PH expert Pip Simcoe at BRS Automotive to give the GTI a once over and prove that we haven't bought a lemon... hopefully. Then it's on to Curborough Sprint Course, where we benchmark the GTI against the Golf R 20 Years. That's 333hp - 13hp more than the regular R - and all-wheel drive against our 200hp front-wheel drive lump. To make things even more difficult, Cam will be going up against Porsche Carrera Cup GB Pro-Am champion - Charles Rainford. Join us for 0-62mph (ish) runs, braking tests and a lap of Curborough as we find out how much work lays ahead of us. Hint: it's a lot.

Fun video but it is daft not to hand both cars to that nice race driver. All meaningless otherwise. 🤷♂️
Agree. You have the top driver at the track so why would he not drive both cars for a true comparison??? Maybe after the mods are applied they will do just that. Otherwise, as you've stated, it's a worthless comparison. Looking forward to seeing what mods are applied and how they do!!

100% not taking anything away from old mate driving the gti but hey for a fair comparison same driver for both cars would have been more entertaining
PH did this on purpose, so there is a bigger gap between the 2 cars. That way the mods will a actually make a noticeable difference in time when they track the car.
If the pro driver drove the mk5, the gap would be a lot smaller.

Somehow the MK5 exterior and seats look better than the MK8. The leather on the MK5 looks great.
It's a great interior that's aged surprisingly well. Looks great in beige, too...

@@markx787 MK8 is driven by cost savings. Its quality is downgraded. The 5/6 era is actually quite good.

@@markx787 Yes and no its not. Cost cutting cheapness. The entire MK8 is that way.
All that braking difference is down to the tyres. You don't need to upgrade the brakes, just replace with new stock pads and discs. Better tyres will make a big difference alongside more power, suspension will add a little extra time.
Even on a stage 1 car the standard brakes aren't really up to the job, stock discs and pads don't really cut it at that point. Ferodo ds2500 or ebc yellowstuff pads make a big difference especially if they're wanting to make a track car. Nobody runs stock discs and pads on a track car they'll fade after a few corners of hard use. Tyres are important as well though!

I own a mk5 gti myself, honestly I love this car but I got unlucky and mine has a bad dsg transmission, I wish to win this one looks so fire, I would fall in love with it
love my manual 3 door mk5 thing is so fun
The mk8 front calipers and disks will bolt straight on to the Mk5 just swap them over for free. I'm sure VW won't notice when you hand the mk8 back
I just purchased a mk5 gti daily here in the states a few months ago! Got it for $2,000 with 220,000miles, but I'm itching to get it on track and see how it compares to my mk7 R. Nice to see a comparison with it 🤘

@@uhbif19 if it has been maintained. Check the timing belt and/or timing chain service records, and make sure the oil pump isn't having problems lol

I thought mk5 gti are belt and mk6 gti chains?
They use a belt to drive the exhaust cam and a chain from the exhaust cam to drive the intake cam.
This location must be high in elevation? 0-60 times for the R should be in the low to mid 4's.
It was 100m sprint not a 0-60 run

You need to have the same driver or at least 2 professional drivers! I bet if they swapped drivers the gti would be equal to the R already!😂
Agreed, it's quite pointless to have a professional driver in one car and then the presenter drive the other car. It's no longer how many mods do you need to beat a modern R, it's just how much better is a racing driver in a faster car.
I'm guessing they'll do a final timed lap in both cars with the racing driver to show the actual difference.

If you had started with an Edition 30 you would stand a lot more of a chance of completing your goal , more expensive to start with but so much cheaper to extract decent power from . You bought the wrong car I am afraid .
I think they’d struggle to buy an Ed30 and get it up to the spec they want for 10K.
Just get on with the mods. This video was pointless. You could have just spent a minute on the race timings and then started the actual mods.
