Akili smith got 11 million for playing in like 9 games, probably got to keep 3-4 of it after agent fees and taxes which is enough to live on interest of investments . So he’s actually a genius.
Sorry its Tony Manderich, not because he was a waste of the number two overall pick but because of the opportunity cost. The three guys drafted after him were Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders and Derrick Thomas... those are three guys that aren't just Hall of Famers, but the most explosive RB in NFL History, the biggest player maker CB in NFL History and one of the greatest Sacker in NFL History. They are legends of the NFL. It is the "I coulda had a V8" moment of the NFL.
I am glad you at least included JR's two family members passing away. I still gotta say Leaf was the worst though because he had more talent but 0 humility
@@mikepalmer1971 know your comment 9 months old, so don’t know if you seen it already but Flemlo Rap’s video on Ryan Leaf basically confirmed what you thought his own teammates growing up didn’t like him lmaooo
My brain ceased to function for about 5 minutes after hearing about the trade offer for the Akili Smith pick. Bengals GM needed to be immediately arrested for malpractice for that.
Ja Marcus Russell is the only one of the three that I saw in person so I'm going with him. I saw him "play" at Giants Stadium in 2009. Ja Marcus was 8-13 for 100 yards and was sacked 6 times. It was one of the worst performances by a QB that I ever saw and as a Giants season ticket holder for 51 years I saw a lot of them.
Brian Bosworth was the worst bust. Because he had so much hype as this monster player. But then Bo Jackson kicked his ass. Brian Bosworth played three seasons in the NFL. 24 games. Ten the first year, 12 the second year and two in his final season. Blew out both shoulders. The reason why his shoulders were weakened was because of all the steroids he took when he was playing at Oklahoma. It was so bad at Oklahoma that his head coach Barry Switzer who was not noted for obeying all the rules. Had to suspend him.
I feel bad saying this because he's not really even a bust, but from what I understand, Reggie Bush was considered the best running back prospect of all time coming out of college, and he never even came close to reaching his full potential in the NFL.
I'd have to say Akili Smith. Both Leaf and Russell dealt with addiction issues in their early career. Smith didn't have that to deal with so it's solely down to lack of preparation and willingness to improve.
You really need to reconsider Tony Mandarich for this list of top three all time busts. He one upped your chosen three because he cheated his way into being considered a number one draft choice possibility. Live by the needle, die by the needle. Mandarich's super powers were because of the massive unnatural body mass he had acquired by doing steroids. That the NFL ever let him back in the league amazes me to this day.
Smith’s agent wasn’t an idiot. He knew the only guaranteed money in NFL contracts is the signing bonus and that Smith was terrible, so he got what he could for his client. I have to respect that.
No Nathan Peterman? I’ll never forget some magazine I read for draft analysis labeled him as the best “defense reading” QB in the draft… That didn’t age well
Peterman was a fifth round pick, while all of the guys in this video were first round picks. So, it is not that much of a surprise. Also, there really wasn't a lot of hype by Bills fans when he was drafted. Compared to the other guys on this list.
Nathan Peterman was a late rounder, they knew they weren't getting a generational talent with him, and while him turning into a meme was definitely not expected, it's expected that a team flub a few late rounders per year. Buffalo did well in the first few rounds in 2017 so his failure is more ignorable.
I thought JaMarcus Russell looked good at LSU, but then I heard him speak in an interview and I shook my head and told my friends I didn't think he'd succeed in the NFL. Being an NFL quarterback is a lot more than being able to throw a ball far.
You need to do a feature on guys like Tom Brady and Kurt Warner. The complete opposite of draft busts, these are guys who no one expected much from and exceeded all expectations.
Not only did JaMarcus Russell fleece the Oakland Raiders, but he also left them with a MASSIVE egg on their faces. Quoting the words of Damon Amendolara, host of the "D.A. Show:" "If you don't draft and properly develop your starting quarterback, it'll set your franchise back for years." That same situation affected the San Diego Chargers. Ryan Leaf was a horrible problem child who brought a shitty attitude and giant ego with him. Imagine being hated by your entire team. Yeah, it takes exceptional talent to accomplish that feat.
It was Jamarcus Russell, he was the #1 draft pick, held out of camp his rookie season for a massive contract he never lived up to. He was out of the league in 3 seasons. The icing on the cake was his contract was the direct reason the NFL now has the Rookie Contract Structure. To prevent unproven players from strapping a team financially that haven't played one snap in an NFL game.
imo mandarich should be here over akili smith. he was so hyped and was taken second overall with the rest of the top 5 being some of the greatest players of all time including deion sanders, arguably the greatest cb of all time, and barry sander, the greatest hb of all time. smith, on the other hand, had questions about him coming into the draft.
I always love the story about JaMarcus Russell. Russell met yhe General Manager from the Detroit Lions and he was talking to him for like 30 minutes and he kept looking at his watch and the guy who was the Grneral Manager of the Lions said that he had told the owner from the Oakland Raiders not to pick JaMarcus Russell cuz he was a joke.
Ryan Leaf is worst because Chargers had to give up a monster hull of players and picks to move up one spot with Arizona Oakland had the number one pick so they didn't have to do anything for J' Marcus 🤨
I always wondered what scouts saw in russell in the first place? I was amazed anyone would draft him in the first round to me i thought he was a guy you might draft in the 5 or 6 round and take a chance on developing. He was clearly the biggest draft bust ever . The others weren't obvious mistakes on draft day they actually seemed to have real NFL potential just didn't live up to it .
From I've seen his arm strength was incredible and he put up some good stats in college, he had some NFL tools to be a great QB but he had a poor work ethic which is why he was out of the league in like 3 years
I feel like Akili Smith is the worst decision, just because of how much value the Bengals completely passed on. I'm not even that plugged in to football, but I'd at the very least think extremely hard about the trade even if the prospect was someone like Peyton Manning. If there were red flags like that low score on a test about the mental side of being a quarterback on the prospect I was likely to get with that pick? Nah, if that's the best pick I'll go ahead and set myself up with a ton of draft capital to either get down-board talent or trade capital for future drafts. Especially knowing that they were doing all that for a running back, even with the 90s being more run-heavy than the modern NFL. I just can't imagine passing up nine picks, half of them before round 3, even if I was giving up the 1st overall pick, much less 3rd overall.
Aaron Curry. The supposed "Safe Bet" LB prospect. The Seahawks took him 4th overall in 2009. He was considered a sure thing and a potential to go #1 in that draft. He proceeded to accomplish nothing but disappointment and three years later he was traded to the Raiders for a 7th rounder having lost his job to a rookie K.J. Wright. He left the Seahawks with 4 tackles a game and a combined 5.5 sacks in two years. He would again put up 4 tackles a game in his sole starting year with the Raiders and never recorded another sack. He would be waived after two games in his second year with Raiders, after which he would sign with the Giants in the 2013 offseason where he would fail to make the final 53 man roster ending his career in a retirement of shame. A supposedly elite, potentially #1 overally draft pick LB prospect got himself waived after only four years, waived two games into his fifth and couldn't even make a roster after that. He isn't the worst bust ever but he's definitely the biggest first round miss the Seahawks (My favorite team) ever had.
One question: How does one plug a tape into a dvd player. I found all these old tapes in storage and I would like to play them, but I can't figure out how to put them in my DVD player 😉
Can you rank all of Atlanta's most recent choke jobs in a tier list like you did with the Vikings? (And by recent, I mean after 28-3, or perhaps more recent if that takes too long)
Answer: Johnny Manziel. Shouldn't have been drafted in the first place. He truly didn't want to play football. He just wanted the money and prestige. 2nd: Jamarcus Russell. 3rd: Ryan Leaf. 4th: Josh Rosen. 5th: Vince Young(I don't care that the coach didn't want him. He should have performed better despite the coach not wanting him.)!
Both Akili Smith and JaMarcus Russell were waaaay overrated coming into the draft and shouldn't be considered busts(at least not all time) because any sane person knew to not buy into the hype. Leaf is definitely the worst of these three. Mandarich and Marinovich should have been featured in this video. Carter got injured and was never the same again... so he wasn't so much a bust as he suffered what was essentially a career ending injury(and it didn't help he kept getting injured in subsequent years).
As a Cowboys fan the Eagles made the best choice of picking McNabb over a Akili smith because McNabb would lead the Eagles five NFC Championships in total and he was in super bowl 39 best draft pick in 1999 first round
How do you have this list without having Manziel? Also, it's understandable why Leaf blew up on the reporter. He had a horrible game and did an interview right after. Not saying what he did was professional, but I understand.
In my opinion and from what I know about football statistics: The three worst were Akili Smith, JaMarcus Russell, and definitely the worst was Ryan Leaf. Funny thing about I've heard that Ryan Leaf, at 1:18, the Colts wanted to pick Ryan Leaf, but he did not want to go to their team because of the cold weather.
Looking at that possible Bengals trade, they would have lost nothing by trading. The 4th pick, the Colts already had Manning, and the Saints had the 5th pick. Easiest trade possible.
Gary Marangi deserves honorable mention also.He was a third round pick but was haled by our local media and the bills front office as a top notch quarterback. Google his stats. PEW
@@nachoalvarez7171Yeah "google his stats" was not my best moment. thanks for that info. I didn't know that about Fergy. However he was not a draft bust. He had a decent career with some really bad - mediocre teams
I sincerely believe there are three other guys that deserve recognition in this category, and curiously enough, all three were second overall picks. 1) TONY MANDARICH: The dude was made All-Pro by the late John Madden even before he had played an NFL down, was drafted by the Green Bay Packers, had a contract dispute since he bowed to "revalorate" all OL positions, and... well, the rest is history. 2) JOHNNY "LAM" JONES: He was a second overall pick by the New York Jets, a world-class sprinter that was denied an olympic medal due to the 1980 Moscow Olympics Boycott, a player that would revolutionize the WR position like no other since Bob Hayes and will even be an understudy behind the great Wesley Walker... Well, how bad he was that even those who display videos about this category have forgot about him? 3) ART SCHLICHTER: The NFL version of Pete Rose, was a sure lock succesor of Bert Jones, a player that was undoubtedly the best college QB of his generation and... well, the Colts had no worth quarterbacking until Peyton Manning.
All three are on my extended all-time bust list. As for Schlichter, he was a #4 pick, albeit one who should have swapped the gambling for drugs and alcohol: he could have bought a lot of wild parties, and made Bob Irsay his friend for life.
Before watching: Tony Mandarich or Jamarcus Russell. So much hype behind them to completely fall flat and do worse than nothing. Couch and Manziel are also pretty high on my list. QBs always seem to get the bust label more than any other position, sucks but you also have to be the face of the franchise.
IMO what makes this even worse than just a "draft bust" and moves it into "premeditated fraud" is that Russell had no intention of actually playing football for his money. All he wanted was the signing bucks and kicking it. At least many/most of the others at least tried to play up to their hype
Let me put it like this. Only raiders fans remember to Marcus Russell, and I don't even know who Akili Smith is. But if you ask anyone who knows football who Ryan leaf is. So when you fail so spectacularly that everyone still remembers you over 20 years later, I'd say that makes Ryan leaf the biggest bust.
In my opinion, Ryan Leaf was the worst bust ever. His rookie season was so horrible, it was criminal. He also had the #1 defense in yards allowed in 98, and still was awful
I would go with demarcia's Russell But most people are probably gonna say right and leave and I think that's only because he was more hyped than any of the other ones you mentioned
In my opinion the biggest waste of talent, which may be a slightly different category, was Lawrence Phillips. None of those mentioned were even close to the natural talent of Phillips.
Guys that just missed the cut for me
-Tony Mandarich
-Art Schlichter
-Kijana Carter
-Todd Marinovich
I think it’s the first first overall pick ever
fun fact i have his rookie card but also, he went to a Superbowl
Kijana is different because it was injuries not lack of talent or motivation
Honestly I felt so bad for KiJana. You see his interviews and he sounds so defeated.

Moral of the story,(I think) if a rookie is asking for generational wealth without playing a snap, they might not be as good as you thought

Thankfully Ryan Leaf has definitely cleaned up his act in the past years. He's really matured a lot as a human being.
Bro he just got arrested again 2 years ago lol, every time he acts like he got cleaned up he gets arrested again shortly after 😭
Yeah, it only took 20 years so yeah
Or he's just figured out another grift.
If I'm cynical, it's because I've been burned SO MANY TIMES by these clowns who have "learned their lesson".
Matured Emotionally but physically? Who knows?
Ryan talked about his disappointing career during a podcast. I'm glad to see that his post-football life has been much better.
Akili smith got 11 million for playing in like 9 games, probably got to keep 3-4 of it after agent fees and taxes which is enough to live on interest of investments . So he’s actually a genius.
“Lackluster 2000 season” is being real nice
Sorry its Tony Manderich, not because he was a waste of the number two overall pick but because of the opportunity cost. The three guys drafted after him were Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders and Derrick Thomas... those are three guys that aren't just Hall of Famers, but the most explosive RB in NFL History, the biggest player maker CB in NFL History and one of the greatest Sacker in NFL History. They are legends of the NFL. It is the "I coulda had a V8" moment of the NFL.
Jamarcus Russell probably the biggest bust, he even calls himself the biggest bust and tells younger students not to follow his path
Biggest as in fattest? Because that is also accurate
When you are so bad that you cause others to lose money . . . yeah, you are the worst.
This channel is gonna blow up at some point. Good work dude.
I am glad you at least included JR's two family members passing away. I still gotta say Leaf was the worst though because he had more talent but 0 humility
I have to imagine he was that kid that was always told how great he was and was never held accountable. It’s the vibe I got from him. A spoiled brat.
@@mikepalmer1971 know your comment 9 months old, so don’t know if you seen it already but Flemlo Rap’s video on Ryan Leaf basically confirmed what you thought his own teammates growing up didn’t like him lmaooo
Best NFL channel in yt
My brain ceased to function for about 5 minutes after hearing about the trade offer for the Akili Smith pick. Bengals GM needed to be immediately arrested for malpractice for that.
Another Tub Saturday classic
Ja Marcus Russell is the only one of the three that I saw in person so I'm going with him. I saw him "play" at Giants Stadium in 2009. Ja Marcus was 8-13 for 100 yards and was sacked 6 times. It was one of the worst performances by a QB that I ever saw and as a Giants season ticket holder for 51 years I saw a lot of them.
I’ve seen countless videos about the same topic but with the SpongeBob’s music this is so much better 😂
Subscribed!
@12:11 great video but... “plug the damn tape into his DVD player”?? Bro, that’s not how tapes work. Making me feel old af. 😂
Wow how i've never heard of Achilles, great video. PS: This is the best nfl channel on YT
I love what your doing bro keep it up 👍🏻
I'd say Ryan Leaf just because his juxtaposition with Peyton Manning is so ridiculous.
Lets not forget about the vikings drafting laquan tredwell in the first round. And him never starting a single game for us.
I feel bad saying this because he's not really even a bust, but from what I understand, Reggie Bush was considered the best running back prospect of all time coming out of college, and he never even came close to reaching his full potential in the NFL.
He was decent in the NFL but he didn't become the superstar RB people thought he would, he's definitely not a bust, he's kinda in the middle
The Bengals refusing that trade is such a Bengals move
Absolutely , they've made some great picks recently though
You’ve only been posting videos for 2 months and almost at 15k subs? Well deserved man good job
Smith’s agent wasn’t an idiot. He knew the only guaranteed money in NFL contracts is the signing bonus and that Smith was terrible, so he got what he could for his client. I have to respect that.
Johnny Manziel is a recent one that comes to memory. Although I don't think in his case it was really a lack of talent, but a lack of maturity.
He was a seventh rounder which is why he is not on here. These 3 busts are all first rounders.
@@jasonrandom372 Manziel was chosen in the 1st round pick 22.
Unfortunately, they are required elements.
Glad you guys mentioned Lane Kiffin Raiders head coach did not want to draft JaMarcus Russel.... Al Davis did
Yeah Al Davis in his prime and Al Davis in his last decade couldn't have been more different
JaMarcus Russel,l Raiders fans want to forget that name since they got Derek Carr brother to David Carr who has the most sacks in a season.
Love your videos bro, keep it up
No Nathan Peterman?
I’ll never forget some magazine I read for draft analysis labeled him as the best “defense reading” QB in the draft…
That didn’t age well
Peterman was a fifth round pick, while all of the guys in this video were first round picks.
Archie Griffin gotta be up there. Yes he had 7 seasons, but as a two time Heisman winner, he fell way short.
Love the videos
Not only did JaMarcus Russell fleece the Oakland Raiders, but he also left them with a MASSIVE egg on their faces. Quoting the words of Damon Amendolara, host of the "D.A. Show:"
"If you don't draft and properly develop your starting quarterback, it'll set your franchise back for years."
That same situation affected the San Diego Chargers.
Let’s go baby, new vid
Maybe he tried to put the tape into his DVD player 🤷🏻♂️
imo mandarich should be here over akili smith. he was so hyped and was taken second overall with the rest of the top 5 being some of the greatest players of all time including deion sanders, arguably the greatest cb of all time, and barry sander, the greatest hb of all time. smith, on the other hand, had questions about him coming into the draft.
I can't believe the bungles declined that offer from the Saints and Ditka. UFB
Renouncing fan-ship is a overall really toxic thing to do. But if I was a Bengals fan in 98, I might consider it when I heard that.
From I've seen his arm strength was incredible and he put up some good stats in college, he had some NFL tools to be a great QB but he had a poor work ethic which is why he was out of the league in like 3 years
He once threw a ball 60 yards from his knees
A combination of things really. He could definitely sling it, but who else were they gonna take at QB that year? High risk, high reward
@@FuckusOfficus4685 it was 80 yds from his knees actually
they saw a gigantic man who could throw the ball farther than about everyone, who was a good athlete and had a great college career.
Thigpen best QB of 2007 draft. Great video.
I’ll say Ja Ryan Smith is the biggest bust 🤭
Akili Smith is the ONLY DRAFT BUST that lets JaMarcus Russell off the hook, both horrid QBs though and legendary busts 🤦🏾♂️😅
Great job!
YES NEW FUCKING TUBFROG VIDEO 😫
One question: How does one plug a tape into a dvd player. I found all these old tapes in storage and I would like to play them, but I can't figure out how to put them in my DVD player 😉
wake up babe, new TubFrog video
Can you rank all of Atlanta's most recent choke jobs in a tier list like you did with the Vikings? (And by recent, I mean after 28-3, or perhaps more recent if that takes too long)
To be fair to Ryan Leaf, I would've said F Tony Robbins too. Motivational speakers just scream scammer to me
Answer: Johnny Manziel.
There is no bullying like being a Raiders fan in elementary school when JaMarcus Russell was our QB.
Akili Smith was a combine phenom. That's why he was drafted so high.
Either Leaf or Russell win these worst bust contests. Honestly, you could pick either one.
How do you put a tape in a DVD player?
As a Cowboys fan the Eagles made the best choice of picking McNabb over a Akili smith because McNabb would lead the Eagles five NFC Championships in total and he was in super bowl 39 best draft pick in 1999 first round
You should do the “best-worst” teams in nfl history
2021 lions lessgoooo
I can't believe that either you didn't include the JAMARCUS SPIN, or that you did and I missed it.
How do you have this list without having Manziel?
Also, it's understandable why Leaf blew up on the reporter. He had a horrible game and did an interview right after. Not saying what he did was professional, but I understand.
Manziel wasn't taken 1st
@@christopherengel7436 Neither was Ryan Leaf.
@@andrewwarren8119 true but there was a debate to take Leaf number 1 and nobody was saying to take Johnny Football number 1
In my opinion and from what I know about football statistics:
The three worst were Akili Smith, JaMarcus Russell, and definitely the worst was Ryan Leaf.
Funny thing about I've heard that Ryan Leaf, at 1:18, the Colts wanted to pick Ryan Leaf, but he did not want to go to their team because of the cold weather.
2 others:
Brian Bosworth
Tom cousineau
I thought Mac Jones was bad but Ryan Lead’s Week 3 game against the Chiefs makes Mac look like a superstar
Leaf, Brees, Rivers - I'm pretty sure Chargers scouts just go for a hike to think up draft ideas.
i don’t know what’s worse that mike ditka trade offer or the bengals declining it 😭
Ryan Leaf was the biggest bust. Period. Or the lineman for Greenbay.
Looking at that possible Bengals trade, they would have lost nothing by trading. The 4th pick, the Colts already had Manning, and the Saints had the 5th pick. Easiest trade possible.
Drafting Ryan Leaf and JaMarcus Russell made sense because of their college careers. The drafting Akili Smith just seems random
Gary Marangi deserves honorable mention also.He was a third round pick but was haled by our local media and the bills front office as a top notch quarterback. Google his stats. PEW
Tbf Joe Ferguson was having a great season but he only won 2 games, so he didn't have a good team
However how did he not even surpass 1000 yards?
@@nachoalvarez7171Yeah "google his stats" was not my best moment. thanks for that info. I didn't know that about Fergy. However he was not a draft bust. He had a decent career with some really bad - mediocre teams
what took so long ??? Just revisited an old web mail homepage and found your response.
As a chiefs fan seeing my team lose to J. Russel lead raiders team was one of the lowest points possible for a team/fan
They should get Patrick Mahomes as a consolation gift.
how about johnny manziel Bust
How does Mel Kiper still receive air time?
It is so sad how someone’s ego could get in the way of their future. College players should get counseling before joining the NFL draft.
Rashad Penny, enough talent to be a hall of famer. But those injuries though, so sad.
Calvin Johnson, Darelle Revis, Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, Marshawn Lynch and Joe Thomas where all taken after him they are first ballot HOFs
Right now Jamarcus Russell is still studing the playbook and when he learns it LOOK OUT !
IMO what makes this even worse than just a "draft bust" and moves it into "premeditated fraud" is that Russell had no intention of actually playing football for his money. All he wanted was the signing bucks and kicking it. At least many/most of the others at least tried to play up to their hype
“Fucking don’t talk to me alright knock it off.” Ryan Leaf
16/50 on the Wonderlic is not "disturbingly low", it's about average.
Leaf, Russell and Manziel. My top three NFL busts. Honorable mention: The Boz
Wait, but let’s say leaf did develop, and he stayed on the chargers what do you think would have happened with drew Bree’s and Philip rivers?
As a cowboys fan I really wanted Brees in Dallas. I was sad when the chargers got him. But it was great fro the chargers and New Orleans.
Never heard of Dimitrus Underwood? Omg, dumpster fire first round pick for Vikings
In my opinion the biggest waste of talent, which may be a slightly different category, was Lawrence Phillips. None of those mentioned were even close to the natural talent of Phillips.
