Y’all may not know this, but when Matt Millen, former President and CEO of the Detroit Lions, invited him into his office for a pre-draft interview. In this interview, Jamarcus kept staring down at his watch, prompting Millen to ask if he had anywhere to be. The second time he caught him staring at his watch, Millen demanded that he leave his office immediately and advised Al to not draft Jamarcus.
When the WORST GM of the modern era of sports (31-84, .270 winning percentage) says he wants nothing to do with you, you know you done stepped in it.

@@TheKing60210 dude, Millen sent JaMarcus to Coach Marinelli’s office, and he GOT THROWN OUT OF THERE TOO for not paying attention.
Get the facts right. He'd already been told by Raiders people he was going 1. They decided that at the combine.
He acted disinterested because the secret was out, and Millen called him in anyway. He didn't want to be there because he already knew he'd be off the board.
Edit - Millen was hoping that by trashing Russell to Al Davis, he'd avoid him so Detroit could grab him. They set him up to look lazy so they could draft him. They wasted Megatron. They would've started Russell right away and ruined him sooner than what actually happened.
Bullsh!t. That would have been a correct decision by Millen, and he never made any of those with the Lions.

Lombardi (not related to Vince) drafted both Jamarcus Russell and Johnny Football.
He also said he would pass on Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers before their drafts.

You are defaming the man. Michael Lombardi never had personnel control ever in his very successful career. Al Davis ran the raiders. Period. Lombardi was GM in name only with the browns. Joe Banner was president of football operations but Manziel was really a Jimmy Haslam pick. Read contemporary accounts of the browns debacle then. I (as a nobody) agree with Lombardi when says he doesn’t feel the need to address nobodies living in their mothers basement talking about things they know nothing about. No baseline knowledge. I knew a guy who was up at LSU on a recruiting trip like early on with Jamarcus. Dude was running a deep route and Jamarcus waves him deeper twice while running (means go deep and don’t slow up) and this dude was lightning fast. He said after that cannon of a throw the coaches were like yeah he is done for the day. He had insane natural talent

Addiction and work ethic go hand in hand. Jamarcus could have been a dedicated student of the game when he was right, but when you're hooked on a substance like he was you only think about the next three hours, if even that. Great job separating the man from the NFL player and also being mindful of his personal issues.

For a long time the NFL was full of people hooked on painkillers, plenty of them still went out and got the job done. Hell, some of the highest functioning, successful people I've ever known were hooked on something. He was an addict AND lazy, they don't always go hand in hand.

My grandfather was a college and NBA coach. He always said there are 2 types of athletes, 1 wants to learn and work hard to hone his craft, the other relies on his natural athleticism to perform. Only 1 will make it in the pros, college both can get excel.

Coaches constantly conflate physical attributes with skill. Being big, fast, and having a great arm are physical attributes, not skills. The woods are full of guys with these attributes who never sniffed an NFL career. Now, being able to read a defense, quickly process information in a chaotic environment, and being able to master a playbook are actual skills. These are the guys who thrive in the NFL.

Having met this man in person, I’ve gotta say, regardless of how his football career turned out, Jamarcus Russell is a great person.
Its a shame we judge a man on his QB rating and not his character. Frankly, MLB is loaded with way more guys who never lived up to the money, but nobody cares about baseball anymore.
Getting humbled by being classed the biggest draft bust in history plus overcoming drug addiction will do that.

The Raiders coaches gave Russell 3 videos on the offensive to watch at home. When he came back the next day, the coaches asked him if he learned anything. JaMarcus replied that he really had learned a lot and thanked the coaches. What Russell didn’t know was the coaches had given him 3 blank tapes….lol

What most people don't understand about the NFL is that it's so much faster than college. In college you play against good teams with good players. In the NFL you play against guys who were all american, all conference, award winners. In college you can coast on just your talent. In the NFL you have to have a work ethic and a will to make yourself better. And you don't have coaches on your back making sure you do what you're supposed to do. In the NFL you have to be an adult and take responsibility for your own self.

I am very happy to hear of his personal recovery. I honestly wonder why he never brought up either the family tragedies OR the substance addiction to the team (okay, the substance addiction probably isn't something to say out loud)... but for someone with a legendary poor work ethic, it's kinda odd that he didn't bring up perfectly valid excuses for his struggling.

The Raiders felt comfortable at WR because they had Randy Moss (a AGING Moss) and that was their reason for passing on Megatron and picking Russell instead.

He's one of the two biggest bust in NFL history. Ryan Leaf and him.
Leaf was the biggest bust - America, which includes me, debated whether he might be a better pick than Peyton Manning (which seems pretty ridiculous in retrospect).
Russell had unparalleled physical gifts, but there were questions regarding his work ethic even before he was drafted. And raw talent alone is just not enough in the NFL (especially at QB).
@@VidaBlue317 it’s easy to call leaf a bust and say he was no match to manning In hindsight, but at the time they weren’t as far apart as they’d become in the NFL. Leaf was the better athlete, collegiate stats weren’t far apart. You can’t teach intangibles. Same downfall with Russell.

That's one of Stephen A.'s biggest, nastiest attacks on a player in the sports universe.... but it wasn't just about Russell, there was an underlying "I told you so" tone to it. SAS was one if a few in the talking heads division that didn't buy the hype at LSU, and was kind of looked at as a big loudmouth who wad just trying to be controversial. And yes, he is brash. He is abrasive. He is a loudmouth.... but he wasnt afraid to take an at the time unpopular opinion. When the writing on the wall became clear to the rest of the world, he had a huge I told you so check to cash.

I still give the biggest bust to Ryan Leaf. The drug addiction and loss of 2 uncles are somewhat a valid excuse for performing poorly, although the laziness (e.g. not watching tape) is less excusable.
I mean, drug addiction and trauma can lead to a lack of motivation. A student who does drugs is definitely not going to class or doing his homework. Drugs definitely lead to laziness

I think it’s more of a mischaracterization more so than an overgeneralization. A lot of drugs do lead to laziness, yes, but in the case of Russell, this is not the case.
Leaf isn’t a bigger bust. Russel went number 1 and Leaf did not. Russell was as bad of a player. Stop being biased
I had a full academic scholarship to college and maintained it all 4 years doing massive amounts of drugs the entire time. Don't get caught up in the false narrative put forward by the USA's "War on Drugs." A war they definitely lost, btw.

2 years ago I went to pay my power bill and a guy was at the kiosk and taking a while to complete his transaction, when he finished and turned around I immediately recognized him, about 6'5 slim, I said are you JaMarcus Russell? He sarcastically said maybe, who are you? I said just wanted to shake a pro's hand and he smiled.
He had one great game that was highly publicized which was The Sugar Bowl a few months before he was drafted.
Owners are often the worse thing that happens to a team.

I found Ryan Leaf doing that to be absolutely amazing to listen to, there is so much in that I had no idea on and I'd love to just sit down and listen to JaMarcus explain things and talk about what went down and why and looking back at it with hindsight. yes he did that letter, which is a fascinating read, but...

Ryan Leaf is one of the few athletes i actually admire for acknowledging his flaws and learning from them
@@Chuck_ELbro what’s crazy is Ryan Leaf when he retired from the nfl actually had a good amount of money saved up and coached at West Texas A&M and was doing pretty well, but then he started abusing drugs such as pain killers and other expensive over the counter medicine and that’s when he really hit rock bottom. From an NFL starter at QB to trying to pretend to be a maintenance worker to get into peoples homes and steal their medications. He went broke and ended up being arrested and jailed and found people who were with him 100% when he felt that he had no friends or anyone to turn too. He got out of jail and went to work for a job making just over $15 an hour and he literally said that doing that job made him the happiest person ever. He loved it and then the huge break is when he got offered a job as broadcaster going from $15 an hour to making well over $10 million a year and now he uses his platform to help mentor others and try to make sure that they don’t make the same mistakes as he did as a rookie.
I actually was at a Raiders game when he was the winning QB, thanks to a couple of missed field goals by the Eagles in 2009
There's an interview of JeMarcus several years ago. He was talking about things from his side. Sad to say, it pretty much reinforced every negative things said about him publicly. After he was paid he wasn't interested in playing football anymore. Can't defend JeMarcus. He did it to himself.
I don't know if this is a hot take or not but in my personal opinion the biggest QB bust in NFL history is Johnny manziel. Ryan leaf and JaMarcus Russell were doomed to fail because they were drafted by losing organizations (at the time). The browns drafted Johnny football and allowed him to do whatever the hell he wanted with no help from the organization to gain some kind of control to help Johnny be a better player.
Manziel was the number 22 pick. Russell and Leaf were 2 and 1 respectively. Manziel definitely a busy, but not nearly as much as those 2.
Ryan Leaf might be the biggest draft buddy because Payton Manning went to an organization that was significantly and consistently worse than the Chargers. People forget how bad the colts were before Manning.
I'll agree with your JaMarcus Russell take since he was doomed whether he was taken 1 or 2.
But Johnny Manziel didn't have what Russell and Lead had which primarily is Size and Arm. Manziel is little and doesn't have the zip on the ball you'd want.
And there was only one other team that thought of Manziel as a first round talent, while both Leaf and Russell were seen as a top pick talent
Nah, man. A lot of people knew Manziel would never be anything in the NFL. Way too small, and if you watch even his college highlights, all he had was elusiveness. All of this most famous plays were him dodging a few lineman and then throwing up an absolute prayer that his *receivers* would make a brilliant catch to bring down. It's the responsibility of the Team to make decisions on whom they pay to play. Don't blame the player for getting alot of money that's on the team.

Man, there's tons of people in life who coast off of their previous achievements, especially in business or just winning the birth lottery. The dude made his money and got out, I don't really see a problem with it. There were fun years watching him at LSU. Being the best QB of all time just isn't what some people want (see Andrew Luck) and I don't really think that's something to hate a guy over. He'll never be up there with the best, but neither with almost every other player who played in the NFL. Sucks for Raiders fans, but at the end of the day they get to turn the TV off and go on with their life, Lane Kiffin has had no trouble finding jobs. He did what was best for him, the only difference is that it got put on display for the entire world to see unlike everyone else in life who does what's best for themselves.

Ryan Leaf was a way bigger bust than Jamarcus Russell. Russell was just hyped cause he played for LSU and put on a good game against the highly overrated Notre Dame
Immature quarterbacks often succeed in college but not in the NFL. Russels immaturity was fairly obvious prior to draft day in my opinion

Another thing to mention, is the fact that Jamarcus got paid. Rookie contracts didn't have limits, so he signed a 6 year, 61 million dollar deal, with $32 million guarenteed. For comparison; Andrew Luck, who was drafted 1st overall in 2012, signed a 4 year, 22 million dollar contract, with a 14.5 million dollar signing bonus.

Looking in Russell’s career after all we know now. That guy is prime example of lack of mental care for him. He had to suffer through addiction and depression, but no one knew about it.

I remember the hype around Russell w/Raiders & fans expected Raiders to be a playoff team with a chance for Super Bowl. Wow, the disappointment was palpable.

You have two options as a player. Sign the contract for the team that drafted you, or rot in obscurity and probably lose out on your NFL dream.
It’s not his problem that the raiders big against themselves to procure his services. They could’ve easily just been terrible again and been in a spot to select Matt Ryan the next year.
I am legitimately surprised that he never got a second chance, though. Usually a guy with this level of hype gets a second shot to fail.
Russell did get second (and third, and fourth, and so on) chances. Many people tried to help him and several teams gave him tryouts over the next few years to let him prove himself. If he was worth a roster spot and a paycheck, he would have received it. But he wasn't, so he didn't. Especially in his earlier second chances, where he was still out of shape and unmotivated. I mean, come on, how many chances does one loser deserve without doing anything to earn them?

Today was the *1* year anniversary of when "The Biggest Bust in NFL History" was uploaded! When I was younger, I actually had more memories of JaMarcus Russell during his time in LSU than during his time in the Oakland Raiders. I was a little kid during his time in LSU! 🤓➡️😅

I would say that ryan leaf ruined his career because of his character and ego while russell gained more weight and became unfocused which lead to the end of his career

Uh, no. You play for a team, and you have to put in the effort for that team. Forget Raiders fans, what about his fellow players? They had to deal with him. Football is a high effort sport, and if you aren't willing to put in that effort, then you shouldn't play. When you get a contract, you should feel obligated to carry out your end of the deal. Lazy, shitty people are the ones who figure that they don't have to hold up their end of the deal. Him playing like shit isn't just a him issue, as I said before he hurt his entire team by playing like shit. If you don't have the motivation to play, then quit. If you want the money? @@Alexander_Grant I see what you mean, but getting out of the sport wasn't his choice...He was released for terrible work habits, and laziness, and despite being the #1 pick in the draft with a lot of natural ability, NO ONE was willing to give him another shot. This wasn't his choice....it wasn't like he walked away voluntarily....he was more or less banned because he didn't give AF. He would've RUN if another team gave him another chance - he tried to make a couple of comebacks, but no one bit. This idea that he's some sort of a martyr is way off. Also, if all pro athletes had his mindset of not caring, then professional sports would come to an end.

If he did get his wakeup call and that's why he tried to come back to the NFL then this should be more of a story of how the NFL owners are a rich boys club who got angry that a player out businessed one of their own and blackballed him, especially since he agreed to play a year for free. And yeah, if every pro athlete had his mindset of not caring there wouldn't be professional sports, you're correct, but there's always going to be people who care. I played high school sports with plenty of people who would have loved a shot at at professional league, me being one of them. Still play local men's league baseball in my 30s.
