    Just some tips I want to share as a cars/aircraft painter.. I would prefer masking with paper instead of bags. Over spray on the bags causes flakes. When you remove the bags, it will flake onto your caliper but it's a caliper so it's okay. However, If you were to paint a car then mask it with paper. It sucks sanding flakes out. Also, if you boil a pot of hot water and put your clear coat can in it, the spray is amazing. it creates a cloud like with no spitting.. Great job.

    Hey, neighbor! (fellow Georgian here). Excellent video. I'm planning to do this for my dark grey Subaru Crosstrek in that very orange to match the interior accents. This video was very helpful since I do want to remove the pads and hardware, but don't want to pull the calipers off completely. I will wait until I need new pads.

    When applying the decal, Apply the center first then work your way to the outside. That way there is no chance for bubbles to remain and overall have the smoothest finish. Make sure you press down evenly to make sure it's set to the surface well before removing the applicator. You can see that dial2fast had a few instances of it still sticking to the applicator. Wait till the paint is dry enough too!! But try to put the clearcoat on within 30 minutes depending on your environment to have a good bond between basecoat and clearcoat.
    One day I may set my car up in a body shop I have access too, but lay the paint from cans, unless I can get high heat paint for shop sprayers.

    • @scorpionwins6378
      @scorpionwins6378 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've seen other examples where a base coat of black (or whatever color you want the decal lettering to be) is applied over the primer, then once it dries the decal goes in place, followed by the base color, overlapping the decal in the process. While the paint is still wet a precision tool like an exacto knife is used to pry up the decal and revealing the black under layer. I imagine a lot of patience is required but that's how I saw it done in another video where a man was restoring the calipers on a Mazda Miata.

    One good trick when masking off sharp edges is to use a flat hammer and lightly tap the metal edges. It will cut the masking tape off right in the spots you need masked. Great video!

    Great paint job 😎 btw. From my past experiences that won't last too long. All the heat cycles will allow all the paint to start peeling. Add that to living in the salt belt and the calipers are done as far as looks. So i went the way of powder coating and that was 16 years ago now and still looks brand new. I got them done as they needed to be bead blasted.

    This is a great video - thumbs up! I had mine done by a pro, took 4 hours as they did not remove the calipers and thank goodness the weather is colder which made the drying time faster. As you said, so long as the areas where needed to be covered are well covered, the job will still look great (which it did in mine). However, there a tad bit of overspray that I noticed (which you will only really see if you look very close). Nonetheless, whatever method is used I think it will do as great.

    A few minutes after painting, you should drive for some time until smoke starts to come out from the calipers; that's in order to heat cure the paint. This assures the finish will last longer and withstand brake heat much better without peeling.

  • @xabre9995
    @xabre9995 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Absolutely correct. I'm an advocate for removing the callipers and painting them off the car, but I also realise knowledge is something you acquire.
    Not bleeding the system correctly, failing to pump up the piston and pads to the disc, not tightening the fixing bolts (not applying thread lock), not clipping in the brake lines (and have them rub against the tire/disc) could all lead to very serious repercussions.
