Talk about the universe answering your questions.... I am building a Bridi Flipper glider from a set of plans, I had one years ago when it came as a kit. I've been out of the hobby for more than 30 years, so I've out of practice on a lot of things - having to re-learn stuff. I've finished cutting all the parts out, now getting ready to start the building. Boy, was I surprised at how small they've made servos and receivers today! I remember when I built this back then I had to search for servos small enough to fit in it. I wanted to do a multi-color scheme on it, but I wasn't sure how to connect the different colored monokotes together - this popped up in my feed. Thanks for this video. It answered EXACTLY what I wanted to know.
I have just watched the whole of this video for a second time and i never get bored watching it. You are a master craftsman and a genius at covering rc balsa planes. Really really good at what you do and its a pleasure to see you in action and giving out all these helpful tips and showing us all the proper way to do it. Im in my early 60s and flying rc glow engine model aircraft for over 38 years. I fly at a local club and this will be the first time ive ever made an attempt to cover a plane. I will be using Oracover, its called Ultracote in the USA. Its a 14 year old plane that i have stripped down and all the wood is secure and sound. The horizontal stabiliser and vertical stabiliser are all glued down of course and i will be following your videos step by step to ensure that i do as good a job as possible. Many thanks again for sharing.
Many thanks for the Ultracote covering video. Will look forward to Part 3 of the covering of the wings. Kind regards. This will be extremely helpful in hoping I can do a half decent job in covering as it will be my first time. It's a big plane the Super Frontier Senior. 80 inch wingspan and the fuselage length is 56 inches long. How many rolls in metres do you think I should order? Thanks. P.S There is 2 metres in each roll.
@@easystar123 all depends on what color scheme or pattern combinations you are to do. For my Reactor 50 the wingspan is 84" and fuselage is 81" in length. I had ordered 4 rolls of orange, 3 rolls of white, 2 rolls black, 4 rolls silver. I still have 1 roll of white left unused.
I am getting ready to cover my wing for a F6F-3 Hellcat. it is approximately 32 inches long. I am glad I found you on you tube. I like how you show how and what to do. I think I will do alright. Thank you for your lesson.
I Got the ailerons done they turned out great. Thank you so much for video lesson so helpful. Hot the main wing to do. Have a Happy Thanksgiving . Talk to you soon. .
Now with the downfall of Monokote and nolonger in production covering with Ultracote or Chinacote remains the same besides temps. Also Ultracote you can't use the windex method. However you can use "No Heat Trim Solvent" with Ultracote.
I appreciate the kind words! I always try to make it easy and something that will not deter the newcomer to the hobby or venture into building your very own first Balsa RC Aircraft. Also thanks to serving in the US Army for many years which also provided me with the basic skills of instructing.
That is what 40 years experience can do. 2 videos and you pretty much have all the info you need about covering a plane. That solder iron trick was awesome too
Awesome! Always awesome when we are able to gain additional tips and pointers from our fellow hobbyist young or old. Even the new guys can give us older guys in the hobby a new perspective which in turn gets our minds wondering and experimenting again developing our skill set and enjoying our hobby even more.
Oh I did but unfortunately do to the video editing and trying to shorten the clips and transitions some of those parts were hidden or cut out. I have other monokoting video besides this one on different models and schemes that you can also grab some tips from.
This was an incredible series man thank you. I just bought my first balsa plane this weekend off marketplace. I bought a Waco sre by nor cal. Os 70 4 stroke. For 100 bucks. It’s basically air worthy. When I found out there was some damage to the monokote I first was ready to walk away. But I decided it would be a good learning experience and I’ll get it cleaned up and fixed up and Update the receiver and battery. I just found your vids. I didn’t look very long either. Thank god. I’m a perfectionist and I love your work. You did an incredible job. I basically learned pretty much what I need to know to handle what I need to with this plane in 2 videos. That’s insane. That is what 40 years experience can do. Explain and teach so well it only took 2 vids. I’m so glad I decided to buy their plane and found your vids. It’s a level up moment for me. Thank you.
I truly appreciate your kind words and I am glad that my videos were of use to you and giving you the drive to give it a shot. I am always here reading comments and on my Facebook group same channel name so if you need anything answered just hit me up.
Awsome video. Also realized that you use the same phrases as my buddies and I do. IT IS ! WHAT IT IS !! Can't wait to get all the stuff to do my plane. Excited aready.
Also checkout the Carl Goldberg Extra 300 covering of the fuselage and wing videos since there I show how I cover multiple layers over a open structure. Same can be applied to the CG Super Chipmunk.
Your series is very helpful. If you were covering a symmetrical wing with one color on top, say blue, and the bottom in a different color, say yellow, how do you join the two colors on the front of the wing. There has to be some overlap. So assuming you cover the bottom first how do you cover the top, roll it over the front of the leading edge and then cut it so it is a straight along the entire length of the leading edge without cutting into and sides of without cutting the bottom Monokote.
Yes cover the bottom first then the top trimming the excess at the trailing edge bottom and leading edge. You can use masking tape to run the length of the leading edge and use a new single edge blade or #11 and cut only the top layer of covering at the tape edge. Or use a trim cutting tool and or make your own blade holder cutting guide. I covered how to cut edges in my covering videos. I have a few videos in the channel so check them out when you can. th-cam.com/video/rFTRqPNt0mo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=vlUpC82u2SU1smb1
Oh you are way better than me for sure but I am not competing with anyone out there! Just adding my touch on the hobby that has guided me from childhood to adulthood and kept me grounded, always learning and practicing new skills and meeting great people as yourself. You are awesome Brother!
Exactly! I hear tons of guys say Monokote sucks, not easy to work with and go straight to Ultracoat. I personally do not care for Ultracoat covering only because overtime the adhesive always pulls away at the seams especially in all my H9 ARF's. I have monokote last 3 times longer! But I am never here to bash one product over another, just my personal experiences which one should take with a grain of salt.
@@MocapLatte no it is the same as any Top Flite Monokote. The difference is that it is darker and any imperfections will show that includes any and all small bubbles from not applying monokote correctly or rushing, too high of heat at the iron etc..
The honest way is to remove the Ailerons and re-hinge it. However I know not alot of people really want to do that so the only way to get around this is to cut strips of covering and start by ironing it into the Aileron leading edge, corners and wing trailing edges. Use a trim sealing iron with a flat spade to make life easier. Using a normal sealing iron will make this task harder because you will be unable to seal the covering down in the middle center line and around the hinges because of the thick iron.
Yes you can. You just have to use your heat carefully. Lowered heat at the sealing iron. You can also use heat gun however alittle more tricky if your first time.
Some plastic cowls are thinner than others or even wheels pants. You can even monokote over fiberglass cowls and wheel pants. I don't have any videos showing this only because I always just paint my plastic or fiberglass parts.
Definitely you can use the vinyl cutter to cut the Chicago Bulls logo. Do the red main bull with the black areas cutout then cut a bull in all black and white for the horns. Layer it all together onto the plane would be awesome.
Can Monokote get "old"? I bought some off amazon and it's not going well. I wonder if it's been sitting around for years. Maybe it's just lack of skill? (never done it before).
Yes it can get old especially if stored in a hot environment. You will know quickly if you have old monokote if the color starts separating from the clear film. If you place tape on the color side and pull the tape off and color remains on the tape then your monokote is bad. What are the issues you having that sparked your question?
Monokote is the best, too bad I think Horizon Hobby is phasing it out. I have noticed more and more colors are being discontinued. I have never been a big fan of Ultracote.
