  • Keynote address 2 by Nozomu Kawai (Kanazawa University) on "Understanding the Reigns of Tutankhamun and his predecessors from the objects in the Tomb of Tutankhamun" (Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, February 16, 2023)
    Nozomu Kawai is Professor of Egyptology at Kanazawa University in Japan and the director of the Japanese-Egyptian mission to North Saqqara. He earned his BA and MA in Archaeology at Waseda University and completed his Ph.D. in Egyptology at Johns Hopkins University in 2006. His Ph.D. dissertation was entitled “Studies in the Reign of Tutankhamun,” which is currently being revised for publication. He had taught at Waseda University for a long time. He was also a William Kelly Simpson Visiting Professor of Egyptology at the American University in Cairo. He specializes in history, art, and archaeology of the New Kingdom in Egypt, with a particular emphasis on the period from the late Eighteenth Dynasty to the Nineteenth Dynasty.

    The International Colloquium "Tutankhamun and Carter: Assessing the impact of a major archaeological find" was held in the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, on the 16th and 17th February 2023. The event took place as part of the cultural programme organized during the exhibition "Faraós Superstars", held in the Temporary Galleries of the Foundation between 25th November 2022 and 6th March 2023.
    The Colloquium aimed at gathering scholars interested in the study of Egyptian collections and their recent history, with a particular focus on the tomb of Tutankhamun, Howard Carter’s career, and his enrolment with art collectors.
    This meeting was organized by the Centre for History of the University of Lisbon and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, on the occasion of the 1st Centenary of the opening of Tutankhamun’s burial chamber.
