Eric Klinenberg, professor in social science and Director of the Institute for Public Knowledge at New York University, discusses his recent book 2020: One City, Seven People, and the Year Everything Changed.

Professor Eric Klinenberg then joins, as he, Sam, and Emma preface the conversation with the idea of “natural disasters” largely being a function of society’s capacity to deal with natural phenomena, with “2020” looking at what the crises under COVID revealed about the incredibly precarious, fractured, and individualist society of the United States. Expanding on this, Professor Klinenberg tackles the ethnographic nature of this work, and the overwhelming nature of the trauma suffered by the public during the pandemic, something also seen during the Spanish Flu epidemic in the early 20th Century. After further contextualizing the United State’s role as an outlier in many regards when it came to the COVID-19 pandemic, including its supposedly elite levels of preparedness and its disproportionate failure in preventing deaths, Eric walks Sam and Emma through the unique failure that faced the US in the form of a complete abdication of leadership from the federal government - led (at the time) by the Trump Administration - in favor of extreme politicization, nihilism, and polarization at a time where social solidarity was of the utmost importance. Klinenberg looks at the glimmers of hope found throughout these crises, and how the government quickly stamped them out, before exploring the Biden Administration’s particular role in refusing to acknowledge or address the continuing effects of these crises, and the US’ ever-precarious footing heading into the 2024 election.

Idk about the UK, but here in Austria mask wearing or the refusal to do so became very much a political statement too, and I bet it was similar in other places, not just the US. Heck, we even had an anti-vax party make it into one county´s parliament, and they wanna run in the national elections this year. Weekly demonstrations, together with the far right party, who just like MTG and others in the US were comparing needing proof of vaccination to having to wear the star in the 3rd Reich.
Thanks for recognising the collective effort Australia and Australians had with the management of covid.
I don’t credit Scott Morrison at all. The state leaders did what was best for their states. Had Morrison had the same attitude as trump (which he kind of did at the very beginning), he would have been forced out of his PM position almost immediately. Especially after the bushfire drama.
Australians have a high sense of community and comradeship, perhaps it’s because we live on a huge island far, far away. We also have a fairly good trust of government. Vaccination rates in Australia were at 95% prior to covid, and we have almost eradicated cervical cancer thanks to vaccines.

I’m so thankful our Premiers stood up and listened to our health ministers and our health professionals. I’m also thankful that most Australians did the right thing and followed the health precautions.

I feel like it's metaphorically discussing the issues with clearcoat on a car starting to peel. It's true. It is starting to peel. But there also aren't any wheels, and we sold the engine block to pay off some debt.
The reason people aren't able to detect misinformation is that they've not even just not been educated, they've been miseducated. Then that's because capitalism has such an immense grip on the US that money matters more than anything.

I saw as an import from America.
I'd like to make two points, first this 'states outbidding each other for vital equipment' kind of happened in Europe, with some coutnries witholding paid-for equipment they actually owed to other countries (Germany was one culprit), and with regard to the UK, masks were absolutely politicised, albeit it was still a cultural novelty that has gotten stronger, as we continue to import more American political norms.
Although its undeniable that trump gravely mishandle covid, the population density and distribuition in Australia is very diferent from the US. Less population and less dense population centres meant that the propagation was slower and more controlable.

@@AROSFC you're missing the entire point if you're not taking away that the US response was completely terrible. Australia isn't special and didn't do anything special. The countries that executed their responses appropriately did exactly that. The US on the other hand not only didn't execute but didn't even plan a response, it was a free for all.
