Here's what worries me about the last few interviews with chomsky: he is usually very reserved when calling out trump choosing to point out the underlying factors rather then focusing on the man. Now, he's calling out trump specifically separate of the awful dealings of the gop. In addition he's more reminiscent of the state of the world during his youth. It feels almost like a man who realized while his calculations were correct about a coming catastrophe, the catastrophe is actually closer than he predicted.

Noam Chomsky is remarkably articulate and, as always, he has done a remarkable critical analysis of the neoliberal capitalist roots of America’s (and by extension, the world’s problems). Having said that, I think that he falls short on offering solutions to the problem, relying far too much on political pressure by citizen activists to instigate change and far too little on individual initiative, innovation and diffusion to affect the same. I will give you my example. For years, as an insider in both government and industry, I pushed hard for reform and change, jeopardizing my career to do so, with little or no lasting effects. I finally gave up, quit, moved to the middle of the National Forest, and set up an off-grid homestead. I now sell my excess solar power to the power company. No electric bill. I have a septic tank and composting toilets. No sewer bill. I harvest my rainwater from my roofs and collect my runoff in my swales and ponds. No water bill. I reuse, upcycycle or recycle my trash. No trash collection bill. I grow all my own fruits, berries and vegetables and raise chickens, ducks, catch fish (from my pond) and hunt deer (in the Forest) for protein. No grocery bill. I still drive my gasoline powered truck, but I sequester so much Carbon in my orchard trees and perennial shrubs and in the Biochar that I produce and add to my soil (to enrich and restore its productivity), that I am net Carbon neutral. No Carbon emissions. I have a human electric cargo bicycle that I designed and built and charge on my property and I plan to expand my solar array so that I can charge an electric vehicle. No vehicle fuel costs. I have some tiny houses that I rent seasonally to hunters, fisherman and agri-/eco-/adventure tourists to offset my property taxes and what’s left of my construction loan. When they are not in use for that purpose, I use them to house students to intern on my farm and take my classes. In short, I have no bills. More importantly, I am essentially independent of BOTH big business AND big government. Because I am not economically dependent upon them for ANY of my needs, I cannot be controlled or manipulated by them and am free to vote my conscious. I am not a hermit, I operate a consulting firm and participate in the economy, but all the money that I earn by doing so is pure gravy, and I can work as much or as little as I like. I have freedom AND everyone else can too. (In fact, part of my consulting business is to design other similar homesteads and to teach other people how to live like I already do - that’s the diffusion part). If everyone were to do what I am doing, the elites that are currently running their lives would be in deep S**T as their would be no one to economically support and serve them. In short, they would find themselves reduced to what they actually are, a useless prehensile tail that is best removed or otherwise disposed of. The most important lesson that the American people need to learn is that these elites only have their power because they, the people, let them have it! The solution is to stop giving to them. Just turn your damn backs on them, vote with your feet and ignore them. In fact, that’s how I would deal with Trump. Shun the man, stop talking about him, ignore him completely, act as though he doesn’t exist, and ignore everything that he says and does. Don’t obey anything that he says. If Americans did that, Trump would have the power that he actually has. None!
I've been a long time conservative when it comes to politics... People like Mr. Chomsky, and even Edward Snowden have really made me question this. Great interview!
Why not ask him some current questions like : How do you feel about a cashless society? Is massive surveillance a good idea? is pure capitalism a good idea (not crony capitalism.)? Can Socialism become crony Socialism? Which of the two offers more freedom of choice. Do the big banks have a liberal or conservative agenda and why? Should we have gone in to Libya. Should we be involved in foreign entanglements. Is a central World government safe or could it become corrupt. Can any system become corrupt? Is it a good idea for corporations to influence government, example, big Pharma. Would they have the same influence under Socialism? Is it possible to control favoritism under any of two systems? Can a government become corrupt to the point of being hostile to its population? Should the oppressed population have the means to protect itself when there is no way to reason? What could be the way to do this when there is absolutely no possible way to reason on a intellectual or logical level? The questions can go on and on. These are all important points that can go very very deep if one considers the complexities of human beings. Those in government are not geniuses, and even geniuses have faults. These where all the questions our founders of this country asked, plus a thousand more. It took 10 years to write and think these questions through. to come up with our constitution. How does Chomsky stand on all of this. Is he really that profound, equal to the sum of all the minds that put this constitution together. No one should be idolized only questioned.

It's not going to be enough to simply go to the window, open it up, stick your head out, and yell, "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore." It's time for sustained mass demonstrations of non-violent civil disobedience in the streets of D.C. (just as soon as the need for social distancing has been lifted). Millions in the streets of the nation's capital, with participants relieved at intervals by additional recruits from around the country. Unrelenting pressure in the spirit of the 60s. Stock buybacks could not have been illegal in any broad sense. They were spoken about by Graham and Dodd (obviously predates Reagan) as a practice that companies engage in to increase their stock price. Graham and Dodd wouldn't have spoken about stock buybacks, as a corporate activity, if the practice was illegal. You can't just swallow everything Chomsky says. He also doesn't explain what he means in the minute detail that he used to when he was younger.
The amount of stock buybacks were legally restricted up till Reagan, who deregulated the practice. The executives can now buy back as much as they want to now. Great for the shareholders, but lousy for everyone else. Why is USA bailing out these companies when they could issue trillions in stock that they bought in the past?

I'm 65 years old and I have been extremely appreciative of the work of Noam Chomsky. I am somewhat confused/dismayed by his lack of research into the actual facts, statistics, etc., with regards to this 'brand new' pandemic, COVID-19: 1) The misuse of Kary Mullis' PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test as an indicator of "infection". 2) The extreme number of 'false positives' and 'false negatives' the PCR produces. 3) The misleading record of deaths of preexisting conditions that are lumped into the outcome of COVID-19 fatalities 4) The insane history of professional "virus hunters" that led to extreme misdiagnosis and deadly treatments... many myths that continue today 5) The outrageous criminal record of the WHO (World Health Organization), CDC (Center for Disease Control), FDA (Food and Drug Administration), NIH (National Institute of Health), and even Dr. Anthony Fauci. Blindly accepting that this "pandemic" is real without criticism and critical scientific peer reviews is SCIENCE BY NEWS CONFERENCE.... the fact that Google/TH-cam, Facebook, etc., is censoring dissent should be directly up Mr. Chomsky's alley..... I hope that he and other powerful/influential/leftwing/radical thinkers will address these issues soon.... (I actually appreciate Jon Rappoport for his efforts in this madness)
I'm sorry, but who are you? How does your "expertise" give you the credibility to deny the decades of research, knowledge, and wisdom of Noam Chomsky? You ever wonder WHY he is never on mainstream media sources? Because people don't want to face the reality of the world. No one likes the truth because it's too harsh to face. It would require you to admit your life means nothing, and our demise is out of control. Life is much more complex than your simple explanations you just posted. I'm only 33 years old, you're 65, and you can't admit this virus is real? You seriously can't see how globalized this world has become and how many people were crossing borders and flying around the globe at any given minute before countries shut their borders? You can't use simple rational thought by thinking about how fast the seasonal influenza virus spreads each year without at least comparing it to COVID 19? It doesn't matter if people died of preexisting conditions while they were infected with COVID 19! What are you just going to sit there and say a COVID 19 infection had nothing to do with their deaths? Even if the globe didn't go into lockdown, it would've been too late already. This is a virus we can't stop. Our healthcare systems are already overburdened, and the global economy would have still been on the verge of collapse. This had been a long time coming. You lived for 65 years and you still believe you're somehow special and nothing like that happens here? People on the other side of the world suffer everyday. People go without water, face starvation, war, oppression, genocide. And they are human beings who can't do anything about their situation. Look at what's happening now! This civil unrest is the result of fear, and it will get worse. This fear, anger, and violence will escalate into hate and a lot of suffering for a lot of people. No one will be spared except the cowards in the ivory towers and the big white house. You can't see the comfortable lives we been conditioned into living is all thanks to the prosperity our governments steal from them? I would really like to show you first hand what COVID 19 looks like. It's not fucking pretty. You want to have a tube shoved in your rib to drain fluid out of your lungs so you can breathe on a ventilator? I get it's hard to believe when it's not right in front of you, and because there's so much conflicting information out there. But that's the consequences we're facing from our over reliance on technology and globalization. Any moron can spread his ideas like wildfire and for what? Money. You understand how fast humans can destroy each other with just conventional warfare right? World War 2 alone: 60 million people in "6 years." But you deny nature's ability to kill 300 000 in 6 months. You need to wake up. All your claims are just that. Claims. No evidence, just empty rhetoric so you can feel better and in control of your own life. You're nearing your end, so maybe in the very near future, you should learn to accept your mortality. I know I already do.

@@shayneb3540 I appreciate your long response to my commentary. With all due respect, I have been reading and following Noam Chomsky longer than you have been alive. I support much of his philosophy and political/economic positions. I also reserve the right to intelligently disagree with him on various topics. This pandemic issue is one of a very few. I have quite a bit of personal empirical evidence to support my position. You stated that the deadly effects of utilizing ventilators which have a high iatrogenic record of fatalities prior to this "pandemic". Your argument begins with acceptance that the procedures which claimed that a new novel virus existed actually was valid. I read those initial documents from Wuhan and there are real fallacies in the process, namely there has never been a real Purification of this genetic material which is required for real analysis. Mr. Chomsky correctly teaches that blind adherence to "leaders" is a risky venture at best... this is an excellent position, and it should also include the field of science. As an African-american how continually studies history, I can name hundreds of (pseudo) scientific documents that were utilized to justify racism and white supremacy which aided in america's Slavocracy, Class oppression and Social control. I think that it would be wise to recognize the power of a internet medium that easily crosses national boarders. The contemporary control of this means for propagation is in the hands of a few oligarch individuals. Thank you Noam for taking time still at this age to safe the humanity and our world. Always amazing to listen to you.
Spot on
I'd be careful you don't alienate people with your talk of worries. If people are watching a video with Noam Chomsky in it, we know they are worried. More important is to focus on his tactical brilliance and calls to action, like at 31:26
The Charter of the Forest Solace and community through shared worry. Worry shared means burden is not carried alone. Opposite of alienation. Worry is important, does not = useless panic. Worry, and act!
I think part of the reason is that the GOP pales in comparison to Trump. Even the GOP think he is off the rails. They have lost control of trump. The rational GOP I think is hoping to have the Dems win so they can get a reset. This will be the second time I have seen the Democrats bail out the GOP... If the Democrats get elected.
Except that Trump's actions to dismantle nuclear agreements played a significant role in advancing the Doomsday Clock to 100 seconds before midnight which just took place this past January 23rd, 2020.
What an outstanding interview. Great joy to see Chomsky on TRN for such a generous commentary. Thanks for all the work you guys at TRN are doing - so very important in these times of crisis.
None!

Why would a corporation create a rainy day fund if they realize that they'll be bailed out by the government at the first sign of trouble?

Whoa, Reagan legalized stock buybacks and tax havens?!?
I did not know that.

I am somewhat confused/dismayed by his lack of research into the actual facts, statistics, etc., with regards to this 'brand new' pandemic, COVID-19:
1) The misuse of Kary Mullis' PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test as an indicator of "infection".
2) The extreme number of 'false positives' and 'false negatives' the PCR produces.
3) The misleading record of deaths of preexisting conditions that are lumped into the outcome of COVID-19 fatalities
4) The insane history of professional "virus hunters" that led to extreme misdiagnosis and deadly treatments... many myths that continue today
5) The outrageous criminal record of the WHO (World Health Organization), CDC (Center for Disease Control), FDA (Food and Drug Administration), NIH (National Institute of Health), and even Dr.
Shayne B Chomsky speaks from his opinion and on how he interprets his chosen facts; just as it sounds like you do. Educate yourself and look at all scientific findings. Take a breaks from tv news. I appreciate your long response to my commentary.
It's also important to recognize that the World Health Organization is also run by an individual (Gates) who openly touts his affinity for the pseudoscience of eugenics and social Darwinism.
His erudition, his concern for society, for the world, his understanding of things, his fairness...made him a visionary...
