Some don’t realize this but the DS, DSi and DSi XL have the same resolution (the same amount of pixels: 192x256). The 3DS line has MORE pixels than the DS line - higher resolution 240x800. When playing, images on the DS lite to the DSi XL there is no “stretching” (scaling) done. The DSi XL just has bigger pixels. The 3DS has to scale. Or you can play at the native resolution and aspect in the Native mode so it fits to a represented 192x256 pixels on the screen. As you see here though there is pixel pairing done on the 3DS too so you never actually get native 1:1 gameplay with DS games at all.
Changed the title. I paid for a new one (limited edition). That’s why it was so expensive but I wanted to experience an unboxing plus it works perfectly. It can be hard to asses used systems. Also, you all know I’m truly a bit OCD and needed a non grubby one lol

@@tonyp9534 Mario Kart is excellent ! But best way to get all the games is to get an R4 Cart that you can put a micro SD card into. Then you can put ROMs on it. No need to hack the DSi to be able to do that.
I just bought an identical one second hand, for around £50. I look forward to the eBay experience of opening a device wrapped in dodgy newspaper and battered cardboard, secured with wrapping tape to the extreme that could keep a working internal combustion engine together. The part about the screen technology and pixels were a really welcome piece,thank you for it!
Then there's me sitting here with my brother's and sister's DSi XLs from back in the day... (my other brother broke his in rage...) I just keep them with me in case they ever wanted to play some DS games with me again. My blue DSi XL has to be my most cherished DS console (I still keep my Lucario sticker on it. It matches so nicely haha). It was night and day going from the DS Lite. I like how the systems are all just waiting for me to get back and re-experience everything that I loved about the DS. Someday I'll get back to them... I also hope that you can pick one up again at some point. I did some searching and they're around $100 AUD. There was also this somewhat recent exploit that was discovered for the DSi systems that can allow you to play any DS game and a few other consoles without needing the physical cartridges (like an R4 card, but free). All you need is an SD card (or microSD card with the SD card adapter). I thought that might have been of interest to you. I hope you have a great day/night whenever you read this. :)
The GUARANTEED IPS screens on DSi XL are honestly deal-makers for sure. I love them, and I always knew that the DSi XL just flat out looked much better than the Lite or even 3DS when playing DS games. Happy to see your insights. Got a DSi XL a while back and even used the battery is just amazing and games look perfect. The colors really pop when playing those sprite-based 2D games too.
No joke. I bought a New 2DS XL (my first console of the 3DS family) about two weeks ago and I've been playing a lot with it. DS games however really bothered me what with the blurry image and black bars. So I decided to search for a DSi XL though I wasn't entirely convinced, I search through the Internet for a comparison of displays, specifically the pixels, because I'm really interested in that kind of stuff and I needed to know if the additional cost was worth it to have the bets experience possible for DS games. There are a few comparisons out there, but nothing like this video. It's just bizarre that in the spawn of time I needed to find a GOOD comparison, you happen to upload this video and it is the best thing I've ever seen, honest to God, every doubt and question I had you answered them fully, going so much in depth as to mention how the pixels work on 3DS machines or the fact that the New 2DS XL uses the same display as the 3DS due to cost saving measures. I have no doubt, if it were anyone else, they've overlooked this kind of stuff, but you really went all out. This truly is synchronicity. I'll be buying a DSi XL with zero doubts in my mind now.

You really won't regret it. And it having guaranteed Dual IPS screens means its pretty friendly buying a used system. Looking back, it's odd that they didn't continue this with the 3DS as having uniform color and contrast really helps sell the 3D effect as a feature and not a gimmick.
I mean let's not forget the non 1st party games on the DS that were incredible. Ghost Trick, the World Ends with You, Elite Beat Agents to name a few...
Growing up i only had a 2ds with like 6 games, most of which were ds games and i never knew that feature existed, but im glad i didnt know because the native resolution on the 2ds is microscopic LOL
Seeing you open this new takes me back to my childhood. I remember being so amazed when my friend showed me flipnote studio, then I saw the Midnight blue DSi XL advertised on TV, and knew I had to have it. I got a job selling magazine subscriptions door to door so I could buy it, and eventually I saved up enough! Me and my siblings had so much fun with this thing, making flipnotes, recording ourselves, taking funny pictures. The simple sight of a brand new Nintendo DSi XL being unpacked unlocks so many fond memories of my childhood. It has me starting to tear up.

Great condition, considering its used and I love the box-y and overall design a lot. been using it and omg I was hesitant that id notice the difference from my 2ds xl too much but its really night and day. Saw this video when it was initially uploaded, but I just now bought a DSi XL for a fairly good price off Facebook thanks to you! I’ve been playing DS games on 3DS with no issue, but after seconds of revisiting them on the DSi XL, my DS carts are never going back in a 3DS. I also never got any type of DSi thanks to being madly in love with the DS Lite and its GBA slot, but using the DSi XL in 2021 is still an absolute treat!

I bought the Mario 25th anniversary edition on launch and still have it, I haven’t played a ds game in so long but I fully intend to go back to it some day, also I’m so happy we didn’t get that box here in the U.K ours was just a tab on the side I hate destroying boxes but I am a nerd too 😂
The primary reason I like to play DS games on my 3DS rather than a DS or DSi is the play activity log. I can see how long each of my playthroughs take and how much time I spend during each play session. Looking at my play history is something I very much value. Otherwise the DS or DSi is the superior way to play.

Mateus Elias the DSi doesn’t stretch the image whatsoever. It’s pixel perfect, just like the DS lite and the DS. The DSi XL and the DSi just have bigger pixels. The 3DS and 3DS XL have different resolutions so scaling must be done on the image.
A few months ago, I bought a New 3DS XL. It was my first ever 3DS system. I absolutely love it but DS games just don't look good on it at all. So just a few weeks later, I picked up a DSi XL and haven't regretted it at all. It's a huge upgrade over my poor DS Lite that's worn out from over a decade of use and I still have my N3DSXL for 3DS games. Having two separate systems for DS and 3DS games may sound complicated at first but I've found it surprisingly easier to manage my games this way. The DSi can also be modded and that unlocks a ton of new capabilities such as being able to run games including ROM hacks stored on an SD card.

Yeah I did the same thing, I hated the way the games looked on my 3ds xl so I went on eBay and got a cheap DSi xl and modded it and now I can play all my games off a 4gb SD card it's really awesome

The main thing for me that makes me debate playing my DS games on my DSi vs New 3ds is the Activity Log. Ive always loved how detailed the 3DS’ activity log is and I just wished they had put one in the DSi
My sister wanted a DSi for her birthday back in 2010, but she thought it was the Normal one, until she noticed that it was the XL (I mean, she didn't noticed that, but I do and I didn't said nothing cuz I thought she wanted the XL one). It was worth after all, it was in offer. The Flipnote Studio still Worth today for the DSi XL by their bigger screen for a better drawing, until Hatena died, but the app still working. Lately we got the DS Lite. Looks colorful in there, but I prefer the XL cuz I can see everything better, and of course looks far better than 3DS.

My old DSi xl had been gathering dust in a draw for years, until I found a video recently about modding it with custom firmware. I took the plunge and modded it, and holy cow I’m now playing it all the time, absolutely love it again. Definitely right that DS games (and GBA for that matter) look vastly better on a DSI XL than they do a 3DS XL.
Oh dang, that LE Super Mario Bros. DSi XL looks amazing. Takes me back to my the days of the unboxing of my white Japanese DSi XL more than 9 years ago. It's a bit scruffed up, yellowed/browned a bit, and I think one side of the hinge is cracked, but I still have my trusty Japanese DSi XL with me and it works without a hitch. In fact, just in recent years I played 999 on it. Fantastic experience. What can I say? In a sense, my DSi XL was, and still is, a valuable treasure to me. I mean, it's probably the rarest thing that I have, seeing that it's a Japanese system (with no option for English). When my friends would come over to play, I'd always make sure they used the countless DS and DSi systems I had instead of my DSi XL. Not to mention how much I loved playing my games on the darned thing. Mention the game, and I probably played hours upon hours on the DSi XL. It's funny, because before I had the DSi XL, I had a DSi which literally fell apart in a matter of months in my hands (previous owner probably did a number on the thing), so I had to overcome the trauma of owning and using a DSi with it's XL brother. Didn't take long for me to overcome, though. Without a doubt, one of my best systems ever. Thanks for taking me down memory lane, Erica. Great video.
Got a used one off eBay because of this video! I feel so lucky because the person who had it took really good care of it. There's no scratches & the screens are in flawless condition to my surprise! Anyway, currently playing HG & can't wait to try the other ds games I have. It's awesome so far & has a spot in my purse for on the go. 😂
Oh I never knew that the 3ds had those issues with playing ds games.... It's something interesting thing to keep in mind, but I definitely would play ds games on a 3ds, I think I'll get used to those isssues, they are not a deal breaker to me... What's crazy is that when I was little I had that exact DS. that DS I remember I brought to school and I tripped and there is a little scratch underneath the camera. I just going to say thank you for being my memory back send me and also the red looks better overall in my opinion
I remember getting that exact DSi XL when it came out but it didn't come with Mario Kart DS but it came with Brain Age games. I didn't know it came with Mario Kart DS but thankfully I already owned that game at the time and still do. Sadly I lost the DSi XL.
Just stumbled upon a sealed Midnight Blue DSi XL online for $180 last weekend. My DS library is pretty meager but I'm super excited to play DS games on my new XL when it finally arrives tomorrow!

I'm probably one of the few people who really don't mind the blurry/stretched look of DS games on 3DS systems. Yes, it's noticeable better on a DS system with native resolution, but I don't think it's so hideous as to enjoy the games less I own a DS original, DS lite and 2DS XL currently and the 2DS XL is the one I use primarily for DS games. Big screens, a circle pad and comfortable to hold

I have that exact DSi XL model! Had it since Christmas 2010 or so, and as I'm typing I'm actually playing Pokémon Platinum on it. Honestly, much better than 3DS, which I only use for DS games if i need to trade pokemon in Gen 4. Still need to get my hands on a DS Lite though, GBA games are hard to see on a GBA (and once again, Pokemon Reasons. I wanna transfer pokemon from Emerald to Gen 4)
I bought that same DSi XL brand new when it came out. I was playing DS games on it and didn't like it. I opened my 2DS XL out of curiosity and noticed the same thing you did. I must say the experience is so much better for DS games on the DSi XL. That version of the console is my favorite.
I remember when I was a kid during the 2000s, I had a Gameboy Advance, which was going outdated at the time, and my parents offered to get me a Nintendo DS, but I rejected it. Then every time we went out to a store or mall, my parents still offered a few more times to get me one, but I still rejected it. The reason I didn't want one is because I didn't know any games I would like would be on the Nintendo DS since I wasn't a fan of Mario or Nintendo's other popular franchises. A few years ago when I was in my senior year of high school, I found out many of the TV shows I watched as a kid had a game or two for the Nintendo DS. Now I refuse not having the Nintendo DS before it went discontinued.
I just recently picked up a New 2DS XL to relive some DS nostalgia. Was a bit disappointed with how the scaling looks, but it's still fun for me. And I'm also enjoying the 3DS game library along with the handful of DS things I have from a decade ago.
Something that was mentioned in a My Life in Gaming video is those lines on the top screen of the 3DS. It's somewhat of a pseudo scan-line effect, and makes alot of retro games look stellar. While the D-Pad isn't amazing, playing retro games at least looks really good.
I loved that stuff but we never had enough money for games :( unfortunately we were childs so we weren't to careful with it, we lost the big stylus and it was GREAT. I would love to see it again.

the dsi xl is the only ds I've had that hasn't broken on me. I went through 3 ds lites(all snapped in half), a dsi xl (heavily dented and somewhat melted from the sun) a 3ds xl (snaped in half) and a new 3ds xl (touch screen doesn't work in certain areas)

You're NOT gonna believe this, but I recently ordered MY VERY OWN blue Nintendo DSi XL system off of Ebay bundled with Mario VS Donkey Kong: Mini Land Mayhem about a month ago. And believe it or not... both the game and the console were LEGIT FACTORY-SEALED in the box when I got them! Yeah ! My very own Nintendo DSi XL system, a console that I've spent 11 LONG YEARS just dreaming of owning (but couldn't afford as a kid), was somehow FACTORY-SEALED and READY for me to start playing with as if it NEVER left great year that was 2010! I'll admit that this Nintendo DSi XL bundle was PRETTY DAMN EXPENSIVE, but after 11 long years of waiting, this purchase was SO WORTH IT, because I can FINALLY play my favourite Nintendo DS games (like Mario Kart and Super Mario 64 DS) the way that they're ACTUALLY MEANT to be played (instead of on a very fragile Nintendo 3DS XL with a visibly-damaged hinge and missing circle pad)!

I still remember the hype between handhelds. Started with the GBA, then GBA sp, Ds, Ds lite, Dsi, 3ds, New 3ds Xl, and now the Hybrid Switch

I never knew there was a native resolution mode for ds games on 3DS XL.
On normal 3DS is the same. But the screen is like Game Boy micro haha
Growing up i only had a 2ds with like 6 games, most of which were ds games and i never knew that feature existed, but im glad i didnt know because the native resolution on the 2ds is microscopic LOL

Seeing you open this new takes me back to my childhood. I remember being so amazed when my friend showed me flipnote studio, then I saw the Midnight blue DSi XL advertised on TV, and knew I had to have it. I got a job selling magazine subscriptions door to door so I could buy it, and eventually I saved up enough!
Me and my siblings had so much fun with this thing, making flipnotes, recording ourselves, taking funny pictures.
The simple sight of a brand new Nintendo DSi XL being unpacked unlocks so many fond memories of my childhood. It has me starting to tear up.
I'm so happy I got my DSi XL directly from Nintendo for only $80 brand new, when it was discontinued.

Great condition, considering its used and I love the box-y and overall design a lot. been using it and omg I was hesitant that id notice the difference from my 2ds xl too much but its really night and day. I've been finishing my first playthrough of soul silver on this guy and been loving the heck out of it. Thanks so much Erica, you've yet to let me down!(not that you could ofc:)

Saw this video when it was initially uploaded, but I just now bought a DSi XL for a fairly good price off Facebook thanks to you! I’ve been playing DS games on 3DS with no issue, but after seconds of revisiting them on the DSi XL, my DS carts are never going back in a 3DS. I also never got any type of DSi thanks to being madly in love with the DS Lite and its GBA slot, but using the DSi XL in 2021 is still an absolute treat!

I bought the Mario 25th anniversary edition on launch and still have it, I haven’t played a ds game in so long but I fully intend to go back to it some day, also I’m so happy we didn’t get that box here in the U.K ours was just a tab on the side I hate destroying boxes but I am a nerd too 😂

The primary reason I like to play DS games on my 3DS rather than a DS or DSi is the play activity log. I can see how long each of my playthroughs take and how much time I spend during each play session. Looking at my play history is something I very much value. Otherwise the DS or DSi is the superior way to play.
And that’s the thing, I’d say that’s just a minuscule feature that the 3DS has over the DSi as well as a fact that you’re probably in the minority of

Mateus Elias the DSi doesn’t stretch the image whatsoever. It’s pixel perfect, just like the DS lite and the DS. The DSi XL and the DSi just have bigger pixels. The 3DS and 3DS XL have different resolutions so scaling must be done on the image.
The DSi is the same exact resolution as the DS and DS Lite. Just bigger pixels. The 3DS has a larger resolution. So the image must be scaled.

A few months ago, I bought a New 3DS XL. It was my first ever 3DS system. I absolutely love it but DS games just don't look good on it at all. So just a few weeks later, I picked up a DSi XL and haven't regretted it at all. It's a huge upgrade over my poor DS Lite that's worn out from over a decade of use and I still have my N3DSXL for 3DS games. Having two separate systems for DS and 3DS games may sound complicated at first but I've found it surprisingly easier to manage my games this way. The DSi can also be modded and that unlocks a ton of new capabilities such as being able to run games including ROM hacks stored on an SD card.
You posted this video on my birthday, and I'm a bit late to the party, but, hearing you talk about pixel density earned my sub, thats how you know the content is gonna be the good good!

This is the very reason why I purchased a DSI XL last week. I played my DS games on my 3Ds xl and thought bro myself, there has got to be a better way…holy crap! I ended up getting the yellow unit as well 😆
this was my favorite handheld when i was in middle school, i could play touch screen focused games better and the form factor was better suited for my big hands

Yeah I did the same thing, I hated the way the games looked on my 3ds xl so I went on eBay and got a cheap DSi xl and modded it and now I can play all my games off a 4gb SD card it's really awesome
It is. The DSi is amazing with twilight really. Sadly I'm going to have to probably get an r4 card for the few games that don't work well with it.

The main thing for me that makes me debate playing my DS games on my DSi vs New 3ds is the Activity Log. Ive always loved how detailed the 3DS’ activity log is and I just wished they had put one in the DSi
Same here, though I bought a flash card from amazon with 208 DS games on it, the 3DS is not able to play it but GS Dark Dawn I always play on the 3DS.

My sister wanted a DSi for her birthday back in 2010, but she thought it was the Normal one, until she noticed that it was the XL (I mean, she didn't noticed that, but I do and I didn't said nothing cuz I thought she wanted the XL one). It was worth after all, it was in offer.
The Flipnote Studio still Worth today for the DSi XL by their bigger screen for a better drawing, until Hatena died, but the app still working.
Lately we got the DS Lite. Looks colorful in there, but I prefer the XL cuz I can see everything better, and of course looks far better than 3DS.

My old DSi xl had been gathering dust in a draw for years, until I found a video recently about modding it with custom firmware. I took the plunge and modded it, and holy cow I’m now playing it all the time, absolutely love it again. Definitely right that DS games (and GBA for that matter) look vastly better on a DSI XL than they do a 3DS XL.
Oh dang, that LE Super Mario Bros. DSi XL looks amazing. Takes me back to my the days of the unboxing of my white Japanese DSi XL more than 9 years ago. It's a bit scruffed up, yellowed/browned a bit, and I think one side of the hinge is cracked, but I still have my trusty Japanese DSi XL with me and it works without a hitch. In fact, just in recent years I played 999 on it. Fantastic experience.
What can I say? In a sense, my DSi XL was, and still is, a valuable treasure to me. I mean, it's probably the rarest thing that I have, seeing that it's a Japanese system (with no option for English). When my friends would come over to play, I'd always make sure they used the countless DS and DSi systems I had instead of my DSi XL. Not to mention how much I loved playing my games on the darned thing. Mention the game, and I probably played hours upon hours on the DSi XL. It's funny, because before I had the DSi XL, I had a DSi which literally fell apart in a matter of months in my hands (previous owner probably did a number on the thing), so I had to overcome the trauma of owning and using a DSi with it's XL brother. Didn't take long for me to overcome, though.
Without a doubt, one of my best systems ever. Thanks for taking me down memory lane, Erica. Great video.

Got a used one off eBay because of this video! I feel so lucky because the person who had it took really good care of it. There's no scratches & the screens are in flawless condition to my surprise! Anyway, currently playing HG & can't wait to try the other ds games I have. It's awesome so far & has a spot in my purse for on the go. 😂

It's something interesting thing to keep in mind, but I definitely would play ds games on a 3ds, I think I'll get used to those isssues, they are not a deal breaker to me...

I remember getting that exact DSi XL when it came out but it didn't come with Mario Kart DS but it came with Brain Age games. I didn't know it came with Mario Kart DS but thankfully I already owned that game at the time and still do. Sadly I lost the DSi XL.

Just stumbled upon a sealed Midnight Blue DSi XL online for $180 last weekend. My DS library is pretty meager but I'm super excited to play DS games on my new XL when it finally arrives tomorrow!
I got back into the DS too! It's still awesome and It's just been great to look back on where my mobile experiences started.. A bit nostalgic considering I got my DSi over 11 years ago. I'm glad you enjoyed the DSi XL, It's probably one of the most underrated DS Iterations
I got a 2 ds xl in 2019. Never played ds or 3ds games before. I regret so much dismissing this wonderful consoles. Just got a ds lite and the dsi xl is next. Absolutely love all this handhelds.
I'm probably one of the few people who really don't mind the blurry/stretched look of DS games on 3DS systems. Yes, it's noticeable better on a DS system with native resolution, but I don't think it's so hideous as to enjoy the games less
I own a DS original, DS lite and 2DS XL currently and the 2DS XL is the one I use primarily for DS games. Big screens, a circle pad and comfortable to hold

A friend gifted me his old DSi XL (he has two). I never had those handhelds personally, so I am having a blast!
I have that exact DSi XL model! Had it since Christmas 2010 or so, and as I'm typing I'm actually playing Pokémon Platinum on it. Honestly, much better than 3DS, which I only use for DS games if i need to trade pokemon in Gen 4.
Still need to get my hands on a DS Lite though, GBA games are hard to see on a GBA (and once again, Pokemon Reasons. I wanna transfer pokemon from Emerald to Gen 4)
I bought that same DSi XL brand new when it came out. I was playing DS games on it and didn't like it. I opened my 2DS XL out of curiosity and noticed the same thing you did. I must say the experience is so much better for DS games on the DSi XL. That version of the console is my favorite.

I remember when I was a kid during the 2000s, I had a Gameboy Advance, which was going outdated at the time, and my parents offered to get me a Nintendo DS, but I rejected it. Then every time we went out to a store or mall, my parents still offered a few more times to get me one, but I still rejected it. The reason I didn't want one is because I didn't know any games I would like would be on the Nintendo DS since I wasn't a fan of Mario or Nintendo's other popular franchises. A few years ago when I was in my senior year of high school, I found out many of the TV shows I watched as a kid had a game or two for the Nintendo DS. Now I refuse not having the Nintendo DS before it went discontinued.

I just recently picked up a New 2DS XL to relive some DS nostalgia. Was a bit disappointed with how the scaling looks, but it's still fun for me. And I'm also enjoying the 3DS game library along with the handful of DS things I have from a decade ago.

Something that was mentioned in a My Life in Gaming video is those lines on the top screen of the 3DS. It's somewhat of a pseudo scan-line effect, and makes alot of retro games look stellar. While the D-Pad isn't amazing, playing retro games at least looks really good.

the dsi xl is the only ds I've had that hasn't broken on me. I went through 3 ds lites(all snapped in half), a dsi xl (heavily dented and somewhat melted from the sun) a 3ds xl (snaped in half) and a new 3ds xl (touch screen doesn't work in certain areas)

You're NOT gonna believe this, but I recently ordered MY VERY OWN blue Nintendo DSi XL system off of Ebay bundled with Mario VS Donkey Kong: Mini Land Mayhem about a month ago. And believe it or not... both the game and the console were LEGIT FACTORY-SEALED in the box when I got them! Yeah ! My very own Nintendo DSi XL system, a console that I've spent 11 LONG YEARS just dreaming of owning (but couldn't afford as a kid), was somehow FACTORY-SEALED and READY for me to start playing with as if it NEVER left great year that was 2010!
I'll admit that this Nintendo DSi XL bundle was PRETTY DAMN EXPENSIVE, but after 11 long years of waiting, this purchase was SO WORTH IT, because I can FINALLY play my favourite Nintendo DS games (like Mario Kart and Super Mario 64 DS) the way that they're ACTUALLY MEANT to be played (instead of on a very fragile Nintendo 3DS XL with a visibly-damaged hinge and missing circle pad)!
