Hell Anxiety | Overcoming the Fear of Eternal Torment

  • In this episode, we explore hell anxiety and ask ourselves three important questions to help spark the deconstruction of the indoctrinated belief in hell;
    1. Is this fear rational?
    2. Is hell a just punishment for sin?
    3. What do we believe about god?
Please keep in mind that all everything I say here is my subjective opinion, and is intended to deconstruct fundamentalist/evangelical/conservative Christian ideologies from an ex christian perspective

The struggle of what happens when we die is something that most people feel the need to resolve in some fashion. Personally, I never understood why. It seems perfectly satisfactory to me that we just die and cease to exist in any meaningful way.

It's a HUGE choice. You don't even care to see how clear the bible made things clear. By freedom of choice, certain events required a redeemer. By that freedom of choice, a redeemer fulfilled the requirements for the gift of salvation to all. Satan lost so all that is left is for him to deceive. You're happy with being deceived and passing up salvation offered in Romans 10:9. You will not have an eternal burning, you will though have to pay the price for your sins since you chose not to be saved by them. Once that is done, you will no longer exist, not even in memory. All by your choice.

Jesus said (“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
      John 5:24 NKJV)
Hell is the second death, where people who chose to be unholy go. They can't be with God because he is holy. God is long-suffering not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

So Hell is probably the main reason I still "believe" and go to church (well, other than I like the music and also makes me think for an hour a week about being a better person). I am with Pascal who basically said, worth it to just be a believer just in case you are wrong and hell really does exist. A giant insurance policy. Which probably won't save me from hell anyway...sigh. There is an atheist channel where he analyzed hell in 5 different major religions and asked what would get him sent there. Turns out Jewish hell is the best, it's only 1 year long and it's mainly to improve you so you're a better person/soul at the end...I feel it's time for a conversion...

    • @2fast2block
      @2fast2block ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@erbiumfiber you're right, just 'believing' as an insurance policy won't do you much good. If you don't believe in your heart, as it says in Romans 10:9, but just act as if you do 'just in case,' I doubt it's doing you much good. "Hell" is actually the lake of fire. It's not eternal. It's the punishment for sins unbelievers will be thrown into and once their punishment for them is done, they will no longer exist.

@mcr9822 I think you missed the point of being baptized and what salvation means, it’s not saying I’ll never sin again or making a commitment to perfection if that’s how it was told to you then im sorry, it’s a public profession of faith to be baptized and your sins are forgiven by the power of Jesus as soon as you ask, the reason Jesus died was because you couldn’t keep the law nor can anybody else at least to the standard God has. You needed only repent the work Jesus started begins when you repent and finishes when your before him only then are you made perfect, if you truly believe then you will sin less than before and as you continue your walk you would become more holy and there would still be times of bountiful fruit and times of lil to none but you would still be saved because of your faith in Jesus would credited to you as righteousness

Hell was not originally prepared for man. It was prepared for Satan and his angels (Matt 25:41). Jude 6 states that fallen angels are placed in chains awaiting judgment. Yet, when men and women join the devil in his work and live in servitude to him, they must suffer the same fate that will befall Satan. If a person ends up in hell, he is lost by his own free choice, not God's arbitrary decision. Such a person has no one to blame but himself. Many see no need to be interested in spiritual things and are indifferent to the pleas of the gospel. Others refuse to obey the gospel or submit to the will of God. Some refuse to believe. Others just love sin more than righteousness. Some, though once obedient, have become unfaithful in service. Many put off obeying until it is too late.
Hell is real. The suffering of it is waiting for the sinful. You can escape the torments found there by giving obedience to Christ now. He will wash away the guilt of your sins and grant you hope of a life of eternal bliss in His presence. All you need to do is humble your heart, ask for forgiveness, and trust in Him, and You dont have to go to hell. Its easy, its free, and its worth it! Why take any chances? The Gospel is good news, why would you be against it? God sent Jesus to save us because God loves each one of us (see John 3:16-17). Jesus prayed for His followers, including us, to be protected from evil and to be one with Him and Heavenly Father. This life is short. Its temporary. You never know when your time is up. Its not about religion, or going to church. Its just between you and God. One on one relationship, through the Holy Spirit, who is given to you upon salvation. The Holy Spirit is the difference. You wont regret it, and you will peace in your heart, and mind, knowing you have assurance of where you will go once your time is up. So please think about it. Its never too late until your life is over, then there is no turning back. So today is the day for salvation. Dont wait! Be blessed!!

I grew up with super-fundamentalist parents. I was indoctrinated with literal hell at an extremely young age. When I was 3, they took me to a “realistic” dramatized movie about hell on a big screen. I was genuinely moritfied by that experience. Throughout my childhood, I said the “Sinner’s Prayer” probably hundreds of times privately because when I would inevitably sin, I felt so guilty and scared of hell that I had to do it again…and again…and again. Years ago, I stopped believing and my life has improved greatly. But I still have anxiety and depression and I’m convinced it’s attributable to my toxic childhood existence.

Great advice but before that prove one little thing,., Just one.
Prove the supernatural events claimed in the old and New books are real and not fables.
It is a simple little task or it sould be if the Christian faith is real.
SO prove the follow SUPERNATURAL EVENTS from the Old book:
the talking shake - ass in Numbers and the talking burning bush
      Samson's magic hair
      Noah's zoo ship was real
Abraham was real (you remember him - the g-rapist and child abuser)
Moses was real not even talking about the Parting of the Red Sea or the Snake tricks
David killed a Giant with a rock
The Earth is suspended on 4 post
the Earth is covered with a Firmament (dome) and the Stars and Sun and moon are in the dome.
you can take an Uber ride in a whales belly
Elijah took an Uber ride to Heaven without dying.
Lot's wife turned to Salt. (not it even get into the b/s about Sodom and Gomorrah)
You can blow a horn and the walls of a city will fall. (that is one hell of a blow job)
also prove the following supernatural event
the unf**ked birth if Jesus (JC) which is ALSO known at the grape of a 13 year old child named Mary
JC jumping out of the grave after 3 or 4 days (zombie jesus)
the Earth stood still and was dark when JC died (yeah prove that b.s)
dead walked the Earth when he died (MORE Zombies)
JC healed the sick with his magic fingers
JC raised the dead ( again even more ZOMBIES)
JC and his 12 gay buddies walked on water - - prove it
JC turned water into wide (I want to know that trick)
JC had lunch on a mountain with the devil
JC put evil spirits into pigs (yeah sure)
When john the baptist waterboarded JC prove God spoke from this sky kingtom d
JC spoke to a crowd in several languages at once (talking out of both sides of his mouth)
      Taking burning bush and Paul
Pauls snake bite he brushed off.
PROVE the Supernatural events are real or accept it being called buiishlt for it is. Or prove they are real
Pray real hard and ask JC to help you prove them so you can be the very first Christian to actually prove anything supernatural happened in the bible prove it
Before you make stupid statements to someone realiing the truth prove the B.S you want them to return to is real. Prove the Supernatural events, Pray real hard for guidance.

@christinawoodard6252there is a whole lot that has been said on this subject, look it up. The subject is called the pascals wager. This idea of doing something, ie being a christian, because it is not that bad compared to the consequence of being wrong, ie going to hell. Generally speaking, the pascals wager is considered a logical fallacy. Secular people use the same trick to manipulate people as well. Taking the shot from a well established criminal, ie pfizer, is not that bad compared to being wrong and infecting/killing your whole family. Fear is a weapon used against you. If you are unable to control your fear, it will control you and others will control you.
There is a thin line between bravery and stupidity, but it is less of a problem if you do something stupid sometimes, then if you never do anything because of fear. That is why those that are trying to control you always try to make the alternative to believing them seem horrible. Like you will burn forever if you do not do what i say or you will kill your family if you do not obey me. F all of them! ✊🏻

Are you willing to take that chance? eternity is a long time to be wrong. There is still time to ask Jesus into your life. He cares for you, and does not wish for you to leave this world without Him. Not trying to create fear in you, just letting you know you dont even have to worry about it at all if you just put your trust in Jesus. He cares for you, and wants to give you eternal life in heaven. Its a great message. He did it for me. He completely changed my life, and I know He will do the same for you. Believe me, its worth it. Its not about the words, its about your heart, because God knows your heart, and your true intentions. So if you truly want to live for the Lord and have assurance of salvation, then He will respond, and create in you a new heart and love for Him. I left a quick video to guide you if necessary. Will pray you have a change of heart, and put your trust in Jesus 100%, because He cares for you, and He has a special purpose for you. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. One of the ways I as a former Christian and now atheist got over the fear of Hell was learning about its origins. Hell, specifically hell-fire, is based on the outdated idea of geocentrism (as opposed to the heliocentrism of Copernicus). Geocentrism says the earth is at the center of the universe and that the sun revolved around the earth, where at sunset the sun would descend into the underworld, travel through the underworld, get to the other side of the underworld where it would rise the next morning, then travel throughout the sky, and then have another sunset where the process repeated itself. When the sun was in the underworld (i.e. Hell), the heat from the sun set the underworld on fire, hence the idea of hellfire and torture. We now know that geocentrism is incorrect, which means that hellfire is incorrect. The second thing that got me was realising that hellfire was based on volcanoes. Also, when you look at Greek mythology and how the Gospels were written in Greek, you realise that the Christian idea of Hell was influenced by Tartarus, which was the torture pit in the underworld in Greek mythology/religion. Also in Greek religion, Elysium was similar to Heaven, and the Asphodel Meadows was similar to the Catholic idea of Purgatory. As for Satan or the Devil, Satan originally appears in the book of Job, which has parallels in the Babylonian myth called Ludlul bel nemeqi", which is about the nobleman Shubshi-meshre-Shakkan and the supreme Babylonian god Marduk. When the Jews lived in the Achaemenid Persian empire, they came into contact with the Zoroastrian idea of Angra Mainyu, an evil figure in that religion. They also came into contact with the Persian idea of daevas, which were demons from Persian mythology, which is where the word "Devil" comes from. The Persian daevas are related to the Hindu Devas, which were basically gods. After Alexander the Great conquered the Persian empire in the 330s bc, the Jews came into contact with the Greek underworld god Hades and the Greek half goat/half man god Pan, which is where we get the idea of Satan as a goat figure. The Devil's pitchfork comes from the Greek god Hades' bident, a two pronged weapon similar to the Trident/fishing spear weapon of the Greek sea god Poseidon, who was a brother of Hades. Poseidon and Hades formed a trinity with the supreme Greek god Zeus, whose weapon was a thunderbolt. The Roman god of the underworld was Pluto, who was also a god of wealth, which is probably the origin of the idea of "if you make a deal with the Devil, he can make you rich". This is not surprising because valuable precious stones and metals come from beneath the earth. This is also related to mines and mining.

I still have some lingering fear that I’m wrong and will go to Hell considering that I was raised Christian and only de-converted about a year ago, but it was actually the idea of Hell that made me deconstruct in the first place. I not only questioned the idea that a God that is good/merciful would torture people for eternity, but I also realized that it’s the perfect manipulation tactic. I realized that the anti critical thinking and anti nuanced nature of many organized religious groups conflicted with my values. I still believe in a higher power, and have had my own spiritual journey though. Quitting religion allowed me to discover myself in so many ways, and address some relationships problems I’ve had with my father and self image/identity issues I’ve had since childhood. Overall I’ve become a better person, and those fears of Hell have been muffled to a major degree.

Kristi nor anyone else can help you at your judgment. The bible made things clear. By freedom of choice, certain events required a redeemer. A redeemer fulfilled the requirements for the gift of salvation to all. Satan lost so all that is left is for him to deceive. You're happy with being deceived and passing up salvation offered in Romans 10:9. You will not have an eternal burning, but pay the price for your sins since you chose not to be saved by them. I was born again at the time and still was told that I was the spawn of the devil in all seriousness. There was no joking around. He meant what he said. And I knew he meant it. There was no question. Since then I have had this irrational fear of death and dying that sometimes prevents me from falling asleep at night. I am 51 yrs old now. Last summer I just couldn't wrap my newly educated mind around how an all knowing loving compassionate God would even think of sending his creation to a tortuous place for eternity. Human parents would never do that even if their kids were horrible monsters so how could a perfect God do it? Same for me. I still have this fear occasionally, but not as bad is it was. I remember having restless nights worrying about going to hell. My deconstruction started when I realised my prayers were never getting answered. This all happened in my early teens. I was blamed and told that because I wasn't praying hard enough, reading my bible without fail, we didn't have food in the house. The old "you just need to have more faith". And at first, I believed it. But eventually those scriptures about "Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." and "the Lord does not let the righteous go hungry" when I was literally starving and eating just bread daily, made me understand that probably nothing was out there. It was crazy to see the manipulation tactics used against me when I voiced my thoughts. Some of those cliche "thought stoppers" they used against me, "God works things out for his glory, in god's timing, all things work together for good, etc., etc." I'm now an agnostic.

What helped me was when I researched NDE's. Testimony is what we do in religion when we have something good to say about what Fod did for us today. Testimony is what we use to judge people in court. Testimony is what we use to tell history. So peoples Testimony when they tell us they died and have a story to tell about the other side, must be believed. To me it's either these testimonies are all actors reading a script or there is something to it. Cause there are similar ties all through the narrative told. The stories I heard, is what helped me understand what happens when we die and that we are all here by choice to gain experience. I don't believe in any religion yet I believe all religions have a purpose and is necessary. We all need to strive for unity and food nature. Religion forces us to seperate based on who's in or not but it also brings peace to people's heart. Its all derived from culture. So do what you need to bring peace. Believe what you want. Just don't force others to believe in what you believe just testify and leave it there. Love everyone cause love is the only thing that matters no matter what. Love is the key.

Hell is like prison. You should be scared of prison, but that’s not its purpose. It exists to uphold justice, to keep things fair for those who do things wrong. You do not have to worry about going to prison because you haven’t broken the law. You should be scared of Hell, but you don’t have to worry about going there. I trust that Christ’s sacrifice is sufficient enough for me *(Romans 5:1-2, 8:1, 8:31-34, Matthew 19:26, 1st John 5:11-13),* and I’ve also examined myself and I’ve ticked every box required to be a Christian *(Galatians 6:4, 1st Corinthians 11:27-31, 2nd Corinthians 13:3-5).* We know that God never lets us down *(Psalm 27, 145, Deuteronomy 31:6, 31:8, Luke 1:37).* We know that He never lies *(Psalm 111:7, Numbers **23:19**, Hebrews 6:13-20).* We know that He is very wise *(Proverbs 2:6, Romans 11:33, 16:27).* Finally, we know that His nature is unchanging *(Malachi 3:6, Matthew 24:35, Hebrews 13:8).* Finally, you do good for the sake of doing good and not out of fear of going to Hell *(1st John 4:19).* Although prison exists, it is not meant to scare you into being good. It is just to uphold justice, and it is the exact same with Hell. It is so much simpler than you realize. I have a friend who is a former Christian and he had the exact same worries about Hell. We debated over it and I proved to him with these verses that his worries were completely baseless. He quietly stopped responding to those points during our debate, so I assume he agreed with me. This video is no different to the arguments that he presented.

Not a god man who is without sin who will be crucified but an actual man. It even says that "if he does wrong, Yahweh will punish him." That is proof that Yahweh was not going to make him "without sin." He will rebuild the temple, bring the remnants Jews back to Israel, end war and suffering, and bring back sacrifices. People of other nations will come to the Jews to learn about Yahweh. THAT is what it says. IF THAT DID NOT HAPPEN, THEN THE MESSIAH DID NOT COME. If we did our own children like that we'd be in jail. That's horribly abusive behavior. Sheol/Saul usually translated Hell or its equivalent in the Bible is the "under world or subterranean cave" (Gesenius Heb. Lex., p. 1022). Sheol, then, is the earth in winter, when the Sun appears among the southern constellations. This is the true meaning of Sheol, which corresponds to the Hades of the Greeks. "Hades is an intermediate state between death and resurrection” = between death and life; it is the earth's sleep. (See Smith's Bib. Dict., Art. Hell).

Only Jesus provides the way to be right with God and to be assured of going to Heaven
Q - How do I get right with God through Jesus?
While the religions of the world falsely require you to do something like be a good person or observe certain rituals/ traditions to get right with God, Jesus already did what’s necessary on your behalf. What He did was pay the penalty that God, who is holy, justly requires for sin which is death.
Rather than you needing to die and stay dead for your sins, you can ask God to substitute Jesus’ death in place of your death so that the sin penalty is satisfied.
      It’s as easy as ABC.
Admit you’ve sinned against God. Tell Him you are sorry and ask Him to forgive you.
Believe [trust, rely/depend on] that Jesus’ death on the cross was in your place and satisfied God’s penalty for sin.
Confess that Jesus is your Lord and Savior
When you do this you’ve put your trust in what Jesus did on your behalf. God says it this way in Romans 10:11 of the Bible, “Anyone who trusts in Him will never be put to shame.” It means being saved from the shame that would have resulted from foolishly not accepting Jesus’ offer to satisfy God’s sin penalty on your behalf. Its a relationship, not a religious experience.

I remember clearly being told by the nuns teaching about going to hell if you sin, any sin no matter how small. I was 6 years old. That is actually the main thing I remember of what was being taught, the other was that holy communion would take the sin away and save me until the next time. My family did not go to church frequently so my exposures were infrequent which has made it easy for me to question the many contradictions in Christianity. But with all of that examination and new information that I have learned over my lifetime, that fear of hell still can haunt me. The earlier and more regularly one is exposed to that, makes it harder to move past. Fortunately, I don't struggle much anymore since I don't think about it that often, but when I do, it takes a small amount of time for me to put things back into perspective.

Ironically, the concept of hell was the first thing I deconstructed about 13 years ago. I was very involved in a Christian group in college and the biggest thing that unsettled me about Christianity was hell. Most of my closest friends were not Christians, and they were (and still are) some of the kindest, most compassionate people I know, so I couldn't reconcile the idea of a loving God with the idea of a God who would send my best friends to eternal torment. Then a couple years later, just after college, I found some books on universalism, the idea that God/Jesus will save everyone, literally everyone, which gave me so much peace, and that's where I'd been till about 9 months ago when I realized that I don't know how much I believe at all anymore. But I decided 13 years ago, I'd rather burn in hell myself than worship a God who would condemn good people to hell for "wrong" beliefs. I want nothing to do with that version of God.

Thank you for your very well thought out essay. As an older person, I'd just like to add that the fear of being wrong eases with time. After being raised Christian, I left belief in a deity in my late teens. But there's always the chance that I am wrong. Well, shouldn't my life have included suffering, bad things happening, if there's a deity who I'm denying? I'm now approaching 60, and only normal ups and downs explained by reason and logic have happened. Nothing supernaturally bad has happened. Hence, I'm growing stronger in rejecting belief in magic. Give it time. The peace of mind will astound you.

Nothing supernaturally?! 1LofT states that energy can't be created or destroyed, it can't happen naturally. One aspect of the 2LofT shows that the universe is winding down, usable energy is becoming less usable. Creation had to be done supernaturally at some point.

Are you seriously suggesting that you would believe in you had suffered bad things? Why not just be grateful that God is merciful and patient with you?( I also had rejected Christianity by my early twenties, but I later realised I was wrong, and have now been a Christian for over four decades)

@@ChrisSmith-xh9wb to me, it's a shame how so many churches have gone from God's word to their own 'word.' I stopped going to churches a long time ago. I could go on and on how messed up it all is, which is true, but that does not change God's word. I'm in awe of God and His word. It is our rock and salvation. God's blessings to you.

As a Muslim we educate each other on the concept of hell not to strike fear and ruin lives of the believers but it acts as a reminder for us to not exceed the boundaries of moral and teaches us about being accountable for our actions ....

For many people on this world Hell is a daily experience. They wake up every day to war, poverty, disease, abuse, starvation. They do not have to imagine "living for today", but live in hope that tomorrow may be better. This song is naive in many ways. It will take more than imagination to change things.

Kristi you do a great job of logically deconstructing your arguments, kudos to you. Imagine a God that gives you a rational mind. A mind capable of using reason to escape the treacherous jungle and create tools for entertainment, exploration and for understanding how the universe works. Then he decides that your reward of eternal life depends on your choosing to remain ignorant, to remain
blind to facts and evidence and to basically not utilize your higher faculties??

This is absolutely not talked about enough. My family is still very fundamental and I grew up in a fundamental Christian school, church, and home. I was taught about hell in graphic ways as young as 4 years old in Sunday school. It was terrifying! I would cry if anyone I knew who wasn’t Christian died because I thought they’d be in hell. I’m 29 now and still have hell anxiety even though I’ve left the church for about 8 years. Something I thought about even at a young age was what is the cutoff regarding people sent to hell? What age is the cutoff of being cognizant enough to “accept Jesus” and, if you don’t and die, you’ll be sent to hell? How could God send an infant, a child, a special needs person, someone who he allowed to be born somewhere where they’d never be told about God to hell? This was a big reason for the beginning of my deconstruction and decision to leave the church. Thank you for talking about this!
