Oikawa is petty and can be annoying but his dynamic with Iwaizumi is so good. They have really good chemistry together and never fail to make me smile.
Their relationship is very wholesome!
That scene of Oikawa staying up late and watching video footage is interesting--you (and other volleyball players I've seen react to this show) respected him for the work he's putting in that other players his age aren't (Daichi is very sensibly having a good night's rest, I hope!); and that's fair, but the thing that always gets me is how vulnerable he looks. He's a brilliant, dedicated player and a good captain, but he's also a kid who knows he's facing a "genius" and is afraid that he'll lose. It's one of the things that makes him hard to completely dislike (and I know you're struggling to keep hating him anyway!).
He is slowly winning me over with his hard work and honourable leadership qualities…

They knew I was back and watching
Oikawa and Iwa-chan have been best friends since grade school. Their love language is violence haha So Oikawa is nice to the other players but teases Iwa-chan. And Iwa-chan always pulls him down his high pedestal.
Hinata did the freak quick. It got dug because Hinata still closes his eyes when they do the freak quick. So he's literally blind and not aiming. He accidentally spiked that ball towards a Seijoh 3rd yr.
Yes I do really like their relationship, very wholesome. And okay I thought so, bro needs to learn to aim
Yeah, I love the dynamic between Oikawa and Iwaizumi, you have so many others idolizing Oikawa, but Iwachan treats him like normal, and that helps ground his character. I think he would verge on intolerable if everyone around him was always praising him. And you can feel how comfortable they are with each other; in contrast with Hinata and Kageyama, who are on their way to forging a similar dynamic (that is, trasing barbs and insults to keep each other humble and focused), but it's rockier because they're still getting to know each other and don't know when an insult might not land right yet.

I really like that Haikyuu shows the struggle between hard work and natural talent. Some players have love and passion for this sport and work extremely hard (like Oikawa and Hinata) - they always have to compare themselves to naturally gifted players who seem to always be a few steps ahead with their natural abilities (like Kageyama). It must be so frustrating yet motivating to play with them, and in some cases, it causes pettiness/loudness to bloom on the surface. I really like how Oikawa-Kageyama and Hinata-Kageyama show this contrast perfectly. You can't help but like Oikawa's and Hinata's dedication, and hard work and root for them when you see they always give 110%. And you can't help but appreciate the natural skills of Kageyama. This show really makes you love most of the characters once you get to know their motivations/struggles/behind stories.
Consider, though, that Kageyama has been playing volleyball since before he could walk. His grandfather was a coach, and we see him joining him and his sister for practice when he was just a little kid.
Oikawa literally said "welcome back" 😭 he's so funny, one of the best captains (second after Daichi imo) and definitely among my favs, love him.

Oikawa is the guy you love to hate, but he's undeniably a good mentor for the boys hes always driving them forward my absolute favorite moment in this entire manga (and arguably the most important) involves him

It is so entertaining to see you admitting Oikawa is a cool player - those next few episodes will be extra fun to watch alongside you! Would you consider recording an extra video after you wrap up season 1? A little summary for all characters - who is your fav and why, who do you think has the biggest potential for growth? which character turned out different from what you expected of them at the beginning of the show? Small things like this - I would enjoy this type of video a lot :)

When I first started watching Haikyuu, I thought I would dislike Oikawa too. But he quickly became one of my favourites. He is one of the best written characters in sport anime I feel. He has a lot of raw talent but is not a genius and put in a lot of effort to get where he is. But he is not perfect and has all the flaws of a typical high schooler like jealousy and ego and what not. He is a flawed character and that is what makes him great .. and relatable.and IwaOi is one of the best friendships in the series. I feel that if someone hates Oikawa, they just didn’t understand the character or the show. (IMO you can’t hate anyone in Haikyuu really and that’s the beauty of the anime too)

The scene that completely changes how we see Oikawa is when he's watching the Karasuno's recording, because it's the one time we see him by himself, being himself.
Then, we notice that everything else... The flirtatious looks, the trash talk, the toxicity... That's all theatrics. When he's by himself, studying the game unblinkingly, is when we see the real Oikawa for the first time.
That title is the understatement of the year 😂 bro is fully in love. Welcome back! Glad you enjoyed the trip and that you're back to watching. Glad to see all the Daichi love and then to see his leadership on full display in the same episode was perfect 👌 you seem to understand the characters better than any other reactor in my opinion. Daichi is so under the radar, I feel like he gets one small character ep in Winners and Losers that’s not even Daichi MC (I’m probably forgetting something) but he’s the absolute heart of the team. The literally only thing I think he could’ve done better would be how he handled the Asahi situation. But I’m also probably not realizing he knew Hinata🌞😆and 😑😬kageyama would be the most honest and fulfilling way to show asahi he still was needed, wanted, and would thrive on the team with the new 1st years
I may need him and sarah pavan to talk about oikawa lol or collab on a video sometime? Just putting that into the universe

I am slowly starting to agree...
Gonna be honest Oikawa might be my favourite character in this show, he always works hard, always is team player and does 150% of what is expected of him - hard to not like him. Plus his Jazz ost is a banger.
Regarding Kageyama's dump - if someone dumps it he will dump it right back at them first chance he gets.
About the "I believe in you" - Personally I always understood it as a "I have full trust in you so you better bring your A game... you dont want to dissapoint me do you?"
And they indeed returned the freak quick first try.
Name Window Seijoh edition:
All Seijoh characters have names referencing various onsen towns in Iwate perfecture
Iwaizumi Hajime - Iwa means rock and Izumi is a water spring. So his first name is "rock spring". Hajime means start or beginning. There is some further meaning but I cannot disclose it.
Oikawa Tooru - Oi means to reach or extend and kawa is a river. So an extending river. Tooru means "to pierce". Loads of meaning in this name but again for later (unless I forget by then :D)
There is secondary interesting thing. If you put their names together you get the word for stubborn or inflexible.
Also fun fact: Oikawa's birthday is on the same day as Alexander the Great. Iwaizumi's is on the day he died.

Oikawa is one of my favorite characters across fiction because he reminds me to never take things at face value. Others look at him and feel like he’s been blessed by the gods: good looking, smart, talented. But he feels like he was passed over when god was handing out genius and he’s willing to put in the work to make up the difference. It’s just a really interesting little twist to his character that makes me love him. He’s also just a really good player which helps too.
So many reacters hate Oikawa, but this is probably the first time I've seen it where it's like "oooh I hate him so much with his fangirls and his perfect serves and his beautiful hair I want to run my fingers through!"

in haikyuu the setters dont follow through with their hands and spread them out instead so that they can get better camera shots of the ball leaving their hands, so you usually won't see them set with proper technique

Like you said, although this episode wasn't quite as action-heavy as some of the previous ones, it's still a good one, laying the groundwork for what's to come in this match. Speaking of, that shot of Oikawa near the end of the episode, it kind of looks like he's figuring some things out about Karasuno, maybe something he gleaned from watching their matches? In the previous episode, Hinata and Kageyama were talking about their signals not being noticed by Date Tech. Maybe Oikawa picked something up while studying the videos... which would definitely be trouble, since Seijoh has already seen the freak quick, so the only surprise for them right now is not knowing when it'll be used...
Also love Kageyama's dump at the end of the eoisode, your reaction was priceless! Where the match against Date Tech was definitely about dealing with the Iron Wall, finding ways around an intimidating block, it's clear from this episode that this match will be setter vs setter, whose style of leadership will win the day?
The different concepts they cover in each game is fantastic and keeps it feeling fresh. I'm so excited to go onto the next epsiodes!

Crazy #4 is my favorite character!!
I used to work with a kids musical theatre company that has a focus on leadership. In my experience some of the best leaders aren't always the best performers. Yes there are exceptions but a lot of the time it is because they are focused on others not just their own performance. I think that translates well to sports as well.
It is amazing what you can do when someone just believes in you. It pushes you to do your best.

One thing that always bothers me in reddit chats is people make "Dream teams" and ask which would win. It bothers me because there are never guarantees. Strong teams can often be defeated by the underdog. Sometimes another team just performs better. Strength does play a part but only one part in the grand scheme of things.

Oikawa and Sugawara are my number 1 favourite Haikyuu and anime characters of all time because I found them to be similar. If you want to know the reason I will tell once the season has ended so that I don't spoil the season. Just wait until you watch Oikawa's backstory later this season, and you will like episode 21 for that one is Suga centered

I had a hard time finding the episode number on my phone and TV. The number is in the thumbnail, but It's covered by the time (video length) and it's in the title, but it gets cut off. It's fine on my computer but the TH-cam suggestion side bar does the same thing.
Also with the title (on my phone, TV and suggestions) it's cut like "I'm starting to like him.... | COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL PLAY...] It cuts out "Haikuu" and the season, and episode number most of the time. On my computer it's perfect.
Again... I'm on this hype train. This is just in case you didn't know and it's unwanted, unsolicited observations so feel free to ignore them completely..

I just really love Oikawa, he knows he is not a genius like Kageyama so he puts in so much work (not that Kags doesn't) and I just really like his attidude towards volleyball :)
Oh and remember, Kunimi (middle parting hair) and Kindaichi (turnip) were on Kags old team ^^
