I am proud of you, I'm 58, and raised my kids alone, but if I did this making soap and doing my Art work, and understanding I have God given talents I would of have done more in life, but it's not too late. I enjoy making home made food and I've sold plates, to raise money for school supply's when my kids were young. Becky, actually, running to the sink and rinsing the lye off with water (1st) is better than rinsing with vinegar 1st. When you put vinegar on the lye, it produces a lot more heat than if you rinsed with just plain water. I was confused about this as well when I 1st started making soap, but look into it and see. You get higher temperatures with vinegar than you do with water, which will only making the lye burn worse. AFTER the lye has been washed away with plain water, that's when you can take a vinegar soaked cloth to wrap the area that was touched by the lye, to help with healing of the burn area. While vinegar does neutralize lye, it is a very weak acid. It takes about 10 times the amount of vinegar, to neutralize the lye. But the heat generated by the vinegar will be worse, than if you just washed with plain water 1st, then used the vinegar after the lye has been washed away.

I've made my own soap for years. It's WAY better on my skin. Everything I used to buy would hurt, burn, make be dry, make me break out in acne or rashes, etc. I haven't had that problem since making my own. I use about a dozen different recipes but all of them are awesome. I hardly ever need to use lotion!
I'd love to try making my own soap and would like a mild spearmint bouquet...someone at work wore that fragrance and it smells so clean and fresh. Even after watching you, I'm afraid to try. You don't give out the exact amounts to buy so you don't have to mix...where would I find that if I muster up the courage to do this and buy some molds?? Do I buy your ebook? I don't like ebooks, I prefer to have a physical book I can pull off a shelf to look at anytime I want. BTW....I'm not a homesteader but I love your channel. Keep up the good videos!!! I think you can do this! It looks like you have a great talent for cooking from your page, so I think this won't be too different. Just get all the safety equipment and make sure you have vinegar on hand just in case. I always watch the videos a couple times to get up my confidence and I write down all the instructions clearly as well so I can quickly glance at them during the process. Let us know if you decide to try it, I think you will do just fine! 😊😉😀
You need some spatulas! I think olive oil soap starts out super soft but when it cures it is considered a hard bar. At least I think that's what I heard;) they look lovely! I make soap and it's a lot of fun!

I like to wipe the excess soap out of my soap dishes with dish towels. This method will also clean your towels without having to add soap when you wash them later on. Just be sure to let the towels sit overnight until the soap has set up. Then I wash my soap making dishes in lukewarm vinegar and baking soda water. Please keep in mind the wet soap will still be caustic, so you may want to use gloves.

I use just about 1/2 gallon of water to 1 cup vinegar and 1 tbsp. baking soda. I usually just eyeball it though. To prevent clogging, you may also want to use hot water and some grease-cutting dish soap. Gather all containers, bowls and utensils and transfer them to an empty sink. Turn the water to high heat, and fill the bowls and containers with water, vinegar, baking soda, and dish soap. While the bowls are soaking, begin washing the utensils using grease-cutting dish soap and a rag set aside for soap making.To clean the stick blender, submerge the head of the stick blender into the bowl filled with hot water solution, and turn the stick blender on. Doing this helps remove the soap inside the blender head. Use a rag specifically for washing soapy tools to scrub the bowls and containers. Rinse thoroughly to ensure all soap is removed. Once finished, scrub the sink completely using dish soap. HI Becky! My soap bars came off the molds pretty neatly and felt amazing. But they are not very hard as yours were. I did over whip it a little and there were some bubbles trapped in the bars. I live in Sri Lanka and it's quite humid here. Can you suggest a way to get my soap harden like store bought soap!! Thank you so much!!
Becky, those molds are great, large, great. Now I have looked at Amazon, but I don't remember seeing these. Can you share where you got these from? If not, I understand, but, yeah, WOW.
Why do we use Fl Oz just for the oils and regular Oz for the Lye and Water? I LOVE your recipes. I may have done them a bit differently and modified them. I used canola oil for my first few batches instead of olive oil, just because it's $4 and way cheaper. The soaps turned out AMAZING, and I added my own essential oils to them. I'm going to be trying olive oils and coconut oils now.
@wesley grizzle Good eye! I didn't even notice that when watching it. Definitely do not go by Fl Oz. Always go by weight. I'm surprised I didn't notice that before when I watched it. The main thing I picked up on the video that was incorrect that she mentioned, was about using vinegar on the lye if you get it on you. This is not a good idea. Although it's true that vinegar will neutralize lye, it is a very weak acid, and it takes a LOT of vinegar to neutralize it. However, it also takes time to neutralize it as well. It's not immediate. When you mix an acid and a base, it generates a lot of heat. Water is neutral and is neither a base, nor an acid, but it still generates a great deal of heat as well. But when you use vinegar (an acid) on the lye (a base), the vinegar will produce "more" heat against your skin, than if you washed it with just plain water, causing a more severe burn against your skin, before it would be able to neutralize it. I haven't used Canola Oil for my soaps yet, but I agree that it is much cheaper. I want to try Sunflower Oil in my soaps next, and see how that comes out.
Reactions between acids and bases can release a lot of heat. If you try neutralizing spills on your skin not only will you get a chemical burn, you'll also get a thermal burn. Just use lots of running water in case of spills.
Can you show how it lathers once it's cured as well as compare the difference between a bar that's been curing for 6 months vs. a bar that's fresh from the mold. Also if you make soap once a year why don't you make another batch 6 months out from running out? That way you can have the nicer 6 months cure for all your bars vs. having to use freshly cured soap. Just a thought.
I'm not sure how lather would be affected, but I do know that the longer a soap cures for, the harder it becomes. A fresher soap is more likely to become mushy in the shower more quickly, while a soap that has cured for six months would be sturdier

HI Becky! My soap bars came off the molds pretty neatly and felt amazing. But they are not very hard as yours were. I did over whip it a little and there were some bubbles trapped in the bars. I live in Sri Lanka and it's quite humid here. Can you suggest a way to get my soap harden like store bought soap!! Thank you so much!!

Why do we use Fl Oz just for the oils and regular Oz for the Lye and Water?
I LOVE your recipes. I may have done them a bit differently and modified them. I used canola oil for my first few batches instead of olive oil, just because it's $4 and way cheaper. The soaps turned out AMAZING, and I added my own essential oils to them. I'm going to be trying olive oils and coconut oils now.
@wesley grizzle Good eye! I didn't even notice that when watching it. Definitely do not go by Fl Oz. Always go by weight. I'm surprised I didn't notice that before when I watched it.
The main thing I picked up on the video that was incorrect that she mentioned, was about using vinegar on the lye if you get it on you. This is not a good idea. Although it's true that vinegar will neutralize lye, it is a very weak acid, and it takes a LOT of vinegar to neutralize it. However, it also takes time to neutralize it as well. It's not immediate.
When you mix an acid and a base, it generates a lot of heat. Water is neutral and is neither a base, nor an acid, but it still generates a great deal of heat as well. But when you use vinegar (an acid) on the lye (a base), the vinegar will produce "more" heat against your skin, than if you washed it with just plain water, causing a more severe burn against your skin, before it would be able to neutralize it.
I haven't used Canola Oil for my soaps yet, but I agree that it is much cheaper. I want to try Sunflower Oil in my soaps next, and see how that comes out.
Reactions between acids and bases can release a lot of heat. If you try neutralizing spills on your skin not only will you get a chemical burn, you'll also get a thermal burn. Just use lots of running water in case of spills.

Can you show how it lathers once it's cured as well as compare the difference between a bar that's been curing for 6 months vs. a bar that's fresh from the mold. Also if you make soap once a year why don't you make another batch 6 months out from running out? That way you can have the nicer 6 months cure for all your bars vs. having to use freshly cured soap. Just a thought.
I'm not sure how lather would be affected, but I do know that the longer a soap cures for, the harder it becomes. A fresher soap is more likely to become mushy in the shower more quickly, while a soap that has cured for six months would be sturdier
