I remember when I was like 6, my family and I went to some hotel and it had an N64. I was like "Ooo, Smash Bros" and it cost like 5 bucks to play for one hour.
Needless to say, I didn't play Smash Bros

McMachete YT definitely if you like party/fighting games, but even if you don't you might enjoy it a lot. i'd start with smash 3ds/wii u or smash ultimate when it comes out, melee is really only significant to the competitive scene

I heard a story from a musician who was on tour while he was still in high school in the late 90’s - early 2000’s. He needed to write an essay for one of his classes & the hotel he was staying at had no business center. The manager told him he could use the N64 controller in his room to type a document through the TV. He said he wrote the entire paper with one of these controllers & it took several hours to complete. Crazy!

When my family and I moved to Mexico, we drove down there and, since it was a 3-day drive, we had to stay at little hotels during the night. One of the nicer hotels we stayed at (unfortunately can't remember which) had a LodgeNet N64 which I thought was cool since I didn't have one growing up. I never pressed my parents to pay for an hour, but I think it had Smash 64. Really weird because this is was 2005 and they hadn't updated to Gamecube.

Yeah, when I was their age, my mom would always lecture me to never reveal any personal information on the internet. I guess parents today aren't as paranoid about their kids going on the internet like my parents were. It's probably cause parents today grew up with the internet and are more comfortable with it. When I was growing up, my parents made it seem like the internet was this scary place where you go to get abducted by child molesters lol. My mom must've watched wayyy too much CNN.

So glad you were able to pick one of these up. I thought these were the coolest things as a kid. The first time I ever played Super Mario 64 was actually at a hotel... a Holiday Inn if I remember correctly.
EDIT: I do find it interesting though because I know for sure the year was late 1996 or very early 1997 when I played it. Were there any other variants of this in existence? We picked up a Nintendo 64 a few weeks afterwords. I suppose my first experience could have just been an actual Nintendo 64 owned by the Holiday Inn? I dunno.

The most interesting for me is the history behind these things. I love it to emulate the games on my PC, but I want to know how the real consoles works and what gadges you can get for them.
I'm only 16 and my first console was a game boy when I was 2006 and than a DS Lite 2008, but I think the older consoles are cooler. I love this channel because of many reasons:
      1. Nintendrew shows very much interesting things
      2. Nintendrew makes good videos and is sympatic
      3. I learn very much about the history of gaming and find new cool games to emulate
      4. I improve my English that way ^^
I want to get a programmer one day and need a good English, but I'm from Germany and don't speak English as native language.
But: could you please make a video about games, which only could be emulated today, because there are no cardriges anymore?
      Thanks! ^^

Holy Shit! In 2006 I was eight years old and a homeschool group with my church went to Phili for a field trip. I ended up breaking my toe in valley forge on the way there so I was crippled for the rest of the trip and in the hotel while I was the only behind with dad I found the controller behind the entertainment system. He paid $5 for me to play an hour of Star Fox and it is one of my favorite memories with him. It made me want a N64 so bad and one of those families after the trip gave me their old one and it is a relic of that memory. I'd love to find one of those for my collection. Thank you for the video

I wasn’t expecting such a trip down memory lane today lol. I remember fondly that I stayed at a hotel in Austin as a kid and the GameCube controller instantly got my attention. When looking through the game catalog I noticed that there was a Pokémon game I’d never heard of called “Pokémon Colosseum” and I will never forget begging my mom to let me play for a few hours, and she said yes! Playing it for the first time was absolutely unforgettable, it blew my tiny mind that a Pokémon game could be in 3D , and on something that wasn’t a Game Boy Advance. One of my all time favorite memories.

back before speed running was truly huge... I used to play Mario64 on one of these when I'd go to Columbus Ohio with my parents to visit family. That's where I developed my skills in speed running because of it being so expensive to play. Sometimes I wonder if I'm one of the first to beat mario 64 with LESS stars that required as I think the most I ever collected was around 40. A friend of mine had figured out the BLJ trick way back when and showed it to me (we were both glitch hunters...) and that's how I'd get up the infinite stairs when I didn't have the required star count. I know for sure these were found in Hilton Hotel rooms as that's where we always stayed.
This was all about 12-15 years ago. I'm 27 now...

One of my current project goals is to find one of these central boxes. I plan on reverse engineering its protocol so I can use the few lodgenet controllers I have around to have around at parties. Kind of a lame reason, but can you imagine in the 90's what it'd be like for someone to have a console that everybody gets to play on?

    • @ravuya
      @ravuya 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

You probably don't need the whole central box, I bet you can scope out the existing controller as you move the stick around and push buttons. RJ11 is only four pins, and two of those are probably gonna be power and ground, which you can figure out with a multimeter, so everything else is likely serial. That would be a fun project to build an adapter.

Yeah I grew up in a penny pinching household lol Out of all the family vacations we talk I think I only got 3hrs worth of play on the SNES (2) and N64 (1).
You bet your damn ass I remembered the few times I got them to say yes lol. And you would get hyper focused because you wanted to get as far as possible before time ran out.
I think they would have earned a lot more moneh of it was closer to 1 or 2 dollars an hour. But thinking about it if a kid had 5 bucks at an arcade (in the 90s) would it last as long as an hour. (I used this argument to convince my dad to let me buy of the hours. And my answer now is, it would depend on the game lol. Eventually if you got good enough at certain games you could beat the whole unit on one credit (or about 20 mins of playtime, again depending on the game). 1 credit would be a quarter so really you could stretch it out longer than an hour lol.

Before I even knew what Nintendo was, I always tried to get my hands on the controllers but my Dad always unplugged them so I couldn't use it. This is when I was around 4-7. I didn't get into Nintendo until 2011 so when I found a GameCube Controller at a Residence Inn that year, I thought it was a long lost Nintendo console. And they kept the Lodgenet system until the Summer of 2013! Never played it though but I assume most people watching this video haven't either.

I really miss these things, and the hotels they were in. Good memories behind them.
I actually do own a LodgeNet GameCube controller, but it's a real shame I can't use it, because it's comfortable.
I also have a LodgeNet box (two of them!) and a power supply for it, but there's no way to test it because I don't actually have the service or any of the servers.
What I really wish is for there to be some kind of adapter. That's actually why I got a _second_ LodgeNet box, in the hopes that I could find some way to fashion an adapter out of the extra somehow someday. Not that I have any idea how, though.

We usually played Mario Kart Double Dash along with Luigi’s Mansion, and I also remember playing the original animal crossing on one hotel visit. We had fun, in fact my dad liked the GameCube even tho we had a Wii back at home. One of my best memories with my dad in my younger years, he unfortunately passed away a month after my 18th birthday. In the mid 00s I brought my NES with me to a hotel, something I had done in the past and was no big deal back then. Right there was the lodgenet n64 system hooked to the tv. There was no way to hook anything else to the tv. Hotels have these television sets that either have a plate bolted over the connections on the back or specially made televisions that are made just for hotels. Yeah, it's one of those ways that hotels try to get you to rack up higher bills by having services that are directly connected to a tv so you have to play video games or watch movies with their equipment rather than use your own.

In short, the LodgeNet system ran similar to the old Sega Channel. The exception being the "set top box" was a cartridge that plugged into the cartridge slot on your at home Genesis and had a coax cable going into the back of the cartridge. Each month, the rom line-up provided through Sega Channel would change, and instead of being charged hourly, it cost a flat fee each month of between $10 and $20.

Between late 90s and early 00s, I got multiple chances on trying out the SNES LodgeNet device from a hotel that I regularly visited. The most interesting fact about the service is that there are 3 exclusive games, all of which are very simplistic in terms of gameplay. Noughts & Crosses, Hangman and Postcard Puzzle.
Did you also know that LodgeNet is one of the Nintendo Gateway System distributors? That service was also available in airplanes. I also recommend reading an article from Snes Central about it.

I know what that SNES Lodgenet controller design is from. InterAct made a series of controllers in the 90's called the ProPad, and there were versions for the SNES, the Genesis (3-button), and the PC which all used the same shell as each other. They also made other controller designs under the ProPad range, but several of them used the same shell design as the SNES LodgeNet controller.

It wasn't just the continental states, they had them in Hawaii too. I got to use the N64 version in a hotel on either Hawaii or Maui when my family visited in October 2001. We had the trip planned months in advance, and then almost canceled it, for obvious reasons. The lines for security were insane, and all flights between the islands had to pass through Oahu first. I didn't know you could operate the TV with it, though, this is the first I've heard about that.

When I was 7 in 2012, me and my family went to the viscount suites hotel. I had an ipod that played plants vs zombies and snoopy's street fair. While flipping through channels to find cartoons I came across the main menu talking about nintendo games. Needless to say I was hooked, but my mom caught me on the n64 menu, I hadn't actually started my first hour yet and was only on the menu part where mario leaned on the n64 logo. Mom told me that it would be expensive to play the games on there. I told her we're just gonna rent the games like we do at Casa Video *The video store we went to every summer* We ended up having to talk about why it would be expensive to play super mario 64 on a lodgenet system. And of course since I didn't know how to do the backwards long jump glitch and shave minutes and considering I never used an n64 controller, needless to say it would take me more than a day to beat super mario 64. I wasn't even a completionist back then but still.

There's actually a TV that goes with the controllers, and it's branded N64 on it. I found 2 of them when I was helping a friend clean out an old abandoned hotel he bought. I kept one.
