  • The Nintendo DS was a pretty great system, but that didn't stop developers from expanding its capabilities with unique (and sometimes bizarre) accessories. Can you recognize each of these obscure and forgotten DS peripherals? Thanks for watching!

    Correction: Some of you all have let me know that the Guitar Hero Grip actually has an alternate connector which works with the OG DS! My grip is still in my collection from my On Tour pre-order back in the day, and I didn't remember any alternate connector so I missed this tidbit. Thanks for watching!

    I have a game called "Slide Adventures Mag Kid" that released in Japan and has its own controller that plugs into the GBA slot and basically works as an optical mouse. You slide the DS around on a flat surface in order to move the magnetic character into other magnetic objects. The game is okay, but I'll admit that I only bought it because of the weird controller lol.
    Arkanoid DS also has its own controller in Japan, the paddle controller. It plugs into the GBA slot and has a dial on it that you turn to control the paddle on screen, similar to old Atari controllers. Unfortunately, I don't own one of those, but I'd love to some day! I heard it also makes Space Invaders Extreme so much more satisfying (and that's already a great game!).

    • @AndyLundell
      @AndyLundell 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The paddle controller is amazing with Space Invaders Extreme. It's so good, it makes me wonder why Space Invaders hasn't always been played with paddle controllers.

    Nice video! I love odd, obscure accessories, would love to see more vids like this!
    Also, you want an obscure, weird DS accessory? Try Slide Adventures MagKid. This was a Japan-exclusive game that came with a pheripheral that also connected to the DS's GBA slot. You'd then put everything on a table and move it across its surface. The accessory emitted infrared light, similairly to a mouse, and used this to detect the movements. So to simplify, it turned your DS into an oversized mouse. Definitely one I want to add to my collection someday

    • @MeepM33p
      @MeepM33p 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's really interesting! I feel like it wouldn't work very well though. My memory might be wrong since I haven't picked up my OG DS in a while, but didn't the bottom have rubber grips? It'd make for a really jerky, stiff movement since it'd be sticking to most flat surfaces. It is a really neat concept though!

    • @zandershepherd4746
      @zandershepherd4746 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh, no, the DS sits on top of the accessory and you are just sliding the accessory across the table. And the accessory is entirely made out of plastic

      My first console was the PS1 ^^” my first handheld was the Game Boy Advanced, almost 8 years later. Video games were either a flea market thing or a, “This is expensive so you’ll get one on your birthday” thing, so a new console of any size was essentially out of the question.

    I remember when rumors claimed that the DSi was gonna have built-in rumble.
    Also: the DS Rumble Pak uses a different Option Pak ID than it was originally intended. We know this through a detail in the DS firmware that also gives away that the Rumble Pak had been planned from the start: the DS alarm clock actually has an option to vibrate the system in addition to the audible alarm. This is seen with a certain two-slot flashcart that just happens to use the ID that the Rumble Pak had originally been intended to use.

    That rumble pack really drained your battery, too. It did work with Metroid Prime: Hunters as well, which came out early in the Nintendo DS' life. The reason it wasn't used for bigger titles like Zelda, as I was told, was 1: that battery issue, and 2: it wouldn't be easy to control a rumbling Nintendo DS and a stylus, which was used to play the Zelda titles.

    And then there's the DS "Slide Controller," which came with the game "Slide Adventure MAGKID." It plugged into the GBA slot and gave the DS a control method similar to an optical mouse, meaning you placed the DS on a flat surface and could slide it around to move.
    There was also a Paddle controller that featured a small knob, used for a couple of Taito games like Arkanoid DS and the Space Invaders Extreme games. It was only sold in Japan but was still able to work on the localized versions of the games.
    And apparently there was a Japan-only TV Tuner that picked up analog signals, complete with little antennae to adjust for better reception and channel-changing via the touch screen. I have no idea if it still works over there, but it's still listed at the Japanese Amazon store.

    i love the weird obscure stuff from japan that go to those "lifestyle application" sort of things. nintendo has always made strange game peripherals and applications for their systems in japan that are made for people who dont play games that often, like those odd banking and stock market apps on the satella-view, and the unreleased cell phone add ons for the gameboy advance that wouldve let people read emails and use a mobile web browser. nintendo really wanted to be a lifestyle brand instead of primarily a gaming brand, its really interesting to me

    Actually, I had Guitar Hero on Tour (loved it so much) and it had a second plug thing from the grip that you could use in place of the other so it fit with the original DS model. I lost the smaller one, so I'm stuck with the larger one meant for the original DS. All you did was unscrew one, and screw in the other. It was fairly simple.

    Metroid Prime Pinball with Rumble Pack, so many good memories in my mind ^^
    Furthermore, I own a DSi and it's pretty exciting to discover all the features that were experienced with former models, included into this awesome handheld device (web browser, cameras... only the rumble pack vibrations are missing 😅).
    Anyway, very good job, this is the kind of videos I really want to watch on TH-cam 👍

  • @leGUIGUI

    The rumble pack was also compatible with Metroid Prime Hunter and also served as a bass system. A DS lite version exists too, so it doesn't stick out, but I think it only came out in Japan.

    If you're going to do a second part, I suggest to include the "Slide Controller" which is an optical mouse accesory to be inserted in the GBA slot. As far as I know, it was only used for the Japanese game "Slide Adventure Mag Kid".
    Another interesting peripherals are the "Paddle Controller" (for Arkanoid, both Space Invaders Extreme and Space Bust-A-Move), the Sega's "Card Reader" for some of its obscure card games for DS, the "Motion Pak" for Tony's Hawk's Motion, or the "Wappy Dog" robot of the Wappy Dog game itself.
