Great question! I'd say it's better than a lot of the more clunky peripherals of the time (Virtual Boy controller, Super Scope, etc.) but not quite as practical as the original N64 controller.

@Gab Well, it was pretty obvious that the joystick would be usable on modern computers, even before showing it working on a computer. I think it was more talking about _how_ it was going to work on a modern computer (which, even then was kinda obvious).

“CZroe” here again. FYI, I’ve owned two of these sticks including one I purchased from the store new, but I also have a strange stick that uses an almost identical base/buttons with a different logo. I believe it’s a CH or Thrustmaster stick, so it seems Laral Group LLC was mostly just rebranding it with some tweaks. I got my Nintendo 3D-1 after it hit closeout stores but I also recall seeing the wireless headset at Software Etc around 1997 or 1998.

“CZroe” here. My thought were a little more along these lines:
Nintendo partnered with Laral Group LLC to bring a flight stick to the N64. Their competitors had flight stick options on Saturn and PlayStation, but the N64 ultimately didn’t really need it due to the analog thumbstick. Still, they bragged about having famed flight sim producers like Paradigm Simulation (Pilotwings 64), so it would make sense for them to hedge their bets... just like that North American 64DD that Metal Jesus Rocks featured which was seemingly ready for the USA way back when the console first launched (probably in case the cartridge format crashed and burned).
Nintendo famously scuttled their deal with Sony and never released the PlayStation attachment for SNES by undermining it, even though they had an agreement. In the case of Laral Group LLC, it’s very possible that they were designing it as an N64 accessory that was canceled. The contract may have been written in such a way that allowed Laral Group to move ahead with their designs in one way or another even if Nintendo canceled the supporting games or N64 accessory... kinda like a Plan B or exit clause. It would certainly explain it, a bit like the near-inexplicable CD-i Zelda and Mario games. ;)

I had never seen your channel before until about 12 hours ago. Then, rn I watched NB's video, what a coincidence!
I played Goldeneye with a Microsoft Sidewinder very similar to your controller and It was super precise felt as though I was wielding an actual gun. You need to map turn to the twist functions and R to one of those tiny buttons on the stick. granted moving isn't the best but aiming feels super nice you can get head shots with ease.

Dang imagine seeing nintendo as a competitor for sony electronics like headphones or competitor to pc companies.
I find it suspect that this joystick would be made for the N64 since the system never received any flight simulation games that had features that could be fully mimicked with a flight stick, and while the toggle 3 option would make it somewhat ideal for fighting games......we all know thats the last thing Nintendo's 5th generation console was known for.

Interesting to see you cover a retro PC peripheral. I'm into old computer stuff myself and I recall LGR covered this joystick as well. From what I remember, he said it really wasn't anything spectacular as far as flight sticks go, which I think I believe.
Also worth stating, the "directional pad" you pointed out at the top is actually called a "point of view hat". You usually use it to look to the left or right in combat games. The analog slider is also called a "throttle", since you usually use it to get your vehicle going.
I liked your idea of emulating some N64 games with it. Star Fox 64 seems like quite an experience with this.
The Joystick probably needs to be calibrated. That was common to do even at the time. It can be done in the Joystick settings menu. That would probably fix the input issues.
Nah, not at all. I calibrated it thoroughly - believe me, I did my best to get it functioning. 😉 I also took apart the whole thing to inspect the analog stick mechanism, but it was very different from what I'm used to seeing so I wasn't able to fully disassemble it. In the end, using about half a can of compressed air helped take away about 50% of the problem, and that's when I decided it was good enough to start recording.

Could just be an issue with that weird serial to usb adapter. That would be a pretty cool adapter to have around honestly. Some of the best flight sticks were only serial port.
@@LungMing23 I don't think it is. I've seen the adapter used with other flight sticks and it works perfectly. Never used one personally though.
Weird. Must be a damaged flight stick then because I just rewatched the LGR episode on this and everything functioned properly when he went right into the serial port.

I kind of wish Nintendo would make some games on PC. Especially their flagships. Not exactly asking for a port or remake of previous titles, but something close to their modern ones. If they don't like using a separate store, honestly I'd be fine using another store made by them (which could implement cross-play compatibility if they choose to use ports). regardless, I doubt that'll happen as they would prefer to stick to their own devices right now. At least they're allowing partnerships with folks like Xbox.

I feel like it was primarily developed for Pilotwings 64 and not Starfox 64, since Paradigm Simulations was known for flight sims.

CZroe is my twin brother :) -- Looks like that one went through a Goodwill thrift store. "$2.00 Y" if someone bought it when the color of the week was yellow, they got it for $1.00 -- I've had a few of these. Got them brand new from Big Lots back in the day. Got at least one from Goodwill. Sold at least one on eBay for basically nothing. Really. It might have been less than $1.00 :( -- I've always suspected it was developed for Paradigm's Pilotwings 64, but Nintendo decided the N64 didn't need a flight stick after all.
All we need now is Pilotwings for PC!
Why is everyone saying "Use the stick on fortnite" or on other games? Why not use the stick on an actual flight simulator! Like X-Plane 11!

Uh, yeah. It probably was. Depended on the computer but the "game port" was really awful most of the time. Also the controllers often used the equivalent of an analog volume control for the axes. Most joysticks were jumpy as hell on standard PCs. This may have also been the reason for any kind of falling out with Nintendo.
My Phenom II PC's motherboard from 2009 has that connector as a pin header, so somewhat modern pc should pick it up. You might need a wrapper such as x360ce for it to be seen by the games, but could work.
As for the wear, try dissasembly it and give it a good clean, most of the time is enough to get it working properly again
Ahh~ the first bgm you used here always gives me a good laugh, the GB Camera is still one of my favorite GB parts.
However, speaking of the joystick... I dunno.
It'd make sense if it was meant for the N64 given there are also official joysticks for its predecessors.
You however must be happy to own that game, pretty sure it is a rare item these days.
You probably don't have to repair anything, most adapters like this are garbage, the real way to use it is to buy a dedicated soundcard or a pci (if your computer still has pci) card dedicated for controllers such as the thrust master ones. Then it's just a question of plugging everything while the PC is off to avoid electrical interference and then calibrating it using the windows tool, even win10 has it :)
Considering the build quality of these things, I assume the dodgy input is due to failing contacts on the inside, as it sure as hell ain't Microswitched!
I think Nintendo could make another attempt at PC market hardware. I don't have a pro controller for my Switch, but I understand that it works out of the box with Windows 10, is that correct? I think it'd be great if Nintendo were to release their classic games on PC for all to buy and play.
I’ll bet you can play any specific pc games that were on the n64 before they got a PC Port which is fantastic and amazing.

7:11 I think for a third-party peripheral for the N64. I think you third-party flight stick compatible with the console can be great when used for games like Sox.
Most likely it was made for the N64 DD but do to the N64 DD failure the company decided to to not waste there work. Who knows the controller could have been use for a game that was intended to be on the N64 DD but was canceled before it was even announced but it is a theory.

I would love Nintendo to get into the PC market again. Because this would've been a solution with some of the Mario Party games that caused problems with the players
