Tom Im a Tesla owner and an EV fan. Any legacy company willing to transition this fast deserves to survive and do well, I guess Ford more than any other know what you have to do to survive and its a credit to Jim Farley hes first out the gate to take up Teslas offer, you would be a fool not to, Jims no fool, Jims putting the customer first.

Half heartedly agree…what’s the reason they didn’t have the leadership to enable to envision this two decades ago or more, back in the EV 1 timeframe. They all, since the 1960’s, have known this was inevitable, yet they stood idly by and persisted in putting profits first for so long. They could have started building out this network decades ago, and chose not to. Not exactly a glowing endorsement of the company. They couldn’t or didn’t do it themselves, waited for someone else to do it, and then paid $ to piggyback off of someone else’s success. Meh at best. They didn’t even engineer the adapter themselves. No gumption from Ford, just doing what Legacy OEMs do and pay $ to try and not go out of business, again.

@@aaronbounds1336 It wasn't inevitable and it's still not inevitable today. EVs are still just a very small percentage of cars on the road and the growth curve seems to be slowing. Mass adoption may eventually happen, but it's certainly not inevitable.

@aaronbounds1336 The comment below yours says it all. The innovative founder of Ford who thought ahead is long gone. They've been led by pencil pushers for decades now. It was no stroke of genius by Jim Farley. Basically his EV launch face planted on the asphalt because they cynically tried to catch up with Tesla with no plans to build out the CCS charging network as he assumed other under capitalized start ups trying to build their tand alone charging networks. Elon Musk threw them a huge lifeline even though they mocked Tesla. He did open up a fantastic charging network he took the educated risk to build at great expense for his great vision and for the greater good of society.

I don’t believe Tesla made a mistake Tom because if you think about it now, EVgo and Electrify America and ChargePoint, etc. etc. etc. are all adding plugs that will charge his vehicles at an extraordinary amount of locations that he doesn’t currently occupy and that actually some Tesla owners buy adapters so they can utilize. What this will do will help him to be able to focus his money on updating his equipment instead of continuously expanding it and then he’ll be able to expand it on top of that once he has it all updated. He’s ahead of the crowd as usual, and this is just one more step in that same direction. 21:30 #greatvideo‼️

The orientation your charging in will block a charger unless you are on the last charger on the right and there is a vacant spot next to it. charging a lightning will eliminate a charger for someone else this is a big issue when most superchargers only have 8 will cause many fights with impatient people hopefully Tesla will address this with more orientation changes for the newer installations.

Excellent, and mostly accurate, informative video by a non-Tesla owner. Well done.
From a long time Tesla owner, some items to consider: if there is a normal parking spot available to the right of the Tesla chargers, a non-Tesla vehicle which doesn’t have its charge port on the left rear or right front should always park in that spot and use the charger at the far right, not taking up two charging spots for their visit; you won’t find Tesla charging locations with 13 (or 11, or 9) chargers - the chargers are paired, and thus will always be installed in even numbers.
Elon was criticized for his decision a couple of years ago to unilaterally call the Tesla standard by its new name, the North American charging standard. But, as has happened so many times over the years, he has successfully turned another vision into
    a reality.

They will begin with an Adaptor strategy similar to Ford, for those of us with CCS ports on our Ariyas this year (2024) and starting next year (2025) will begin shipping Ariya and other future models with NACS built in. I am excited to have access to a larger more reliable charging network. I think the standardization is a good thing and overall provides a better charging experience for all EV owners over time.

Wow. I literally just bought a Lightning yesterday, and was able to order my adapter online. Great news, though Ford is telling me I won't get my adapter till August, which isn't such great news. I guess I'll have to buy one of those third party adapters you showed in the meantime.

Great that they worked this quickly to get the adaptors out there. Now if only they would figure out the battery energy management system recall issue on my Ford Fusion Energi (going on 9 months now since they told me to not charge the battery, with no resolution in place).

Thanks Tom… awesome presentation as always…. Signed up for my free adapter already…. My order number is in the low 5000’s and it says May delivery. I watched your earlier reviews and pre ordered a Lectron adapter a month ago based on info from your interviews… still haven’t received it however and was wondering if you’ve heard of anyone that ordered the Lectron adapter and has received it yet? I’ve seen lots of the other adapter that has shipped already.
    Thanks in advance.

Tom, thanks for all of your videos. I’ve had my M3 since 2018 and my Lightning since 2022. You are correct that the charging infrastructure is far superior with a Tesla. I ordered my NACS to CCS adapter but it won’t be here until June. I see that you reviewed the A2Z adapter and I wanted to see if you think the A2Z adapter is as good as the Tesla/Ford adapter since I can get that in 2 weeks which means I’ll have it in time for my trip north for the Eclipse in April. Thoughts?

What we are seeing here is the industry standardizing the plug type.
    Funny Story-
A guy has just built himself a nice offgrid home. He has the solar up & was shopping for batteries to build his battery pack.
THEN, he recalled those Ford Lightning commercials which brag the Lightning can power a house. So, he looked into it
    and found-
1-The Lightning has a bigger battery pack than he was designing
2-The Lightning cost LESS than the smaller battery pack he was looking to buy
    SO,
He bought a Lightning to power his home. PLUS he has a truck to run to town for whatever. Very cool.
    !

So pulling your Lightning in to charge occupies 2 charging spots at a normal Tesla charging location. That is kind of a problem?

    • @djtaylorutube
      @djtaylorutube 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

@@CodyDavis91It is a problem because Tesla software won't know that it's a stupid vehicle using two bays, all it knows is that one stall is in use.
We see this in the UK, 8 bay supercharger location, two f'kin BMWs taking 4 bays. However the in car display says 6 stalls free.
Tesla are adding predictive free/busy but while they will know if Tesla cars enroute and with that destination in the plan, they are blind to non Tesla.
When there's an abundance of capacity, it won't be a problem but with existing queues, this won't work well.

    • @mowcowbell
      @mowcowbell 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

I could see this being an issue if a supercharger location doesn't have the side mounted stations like those used for Teslas pulling a trailer.

Awesome video Tom and love your passion for EVs. Prices are still very high , especially with current interest rate , but I love the technology.
I don’t understand the need or must have charging stats like you mentioned … I don’t care the flow rate for my gas Fusion - some pumps are quicker than others - but I get that it’s unique to electric vehicles .
Waiting for Ford’s updated MachE or other release as I plan my future vehicle .

Question: Imagine less able person who can hold either Tesla cable or adapter but not both at the same time. Can you plug the adapter into the vehicle first, then the Tesla plug?

Very good question! I'm an able man but still notice the effort it takes to wrestle an EA charge cable to the port on the Lightening I'm driving. I have to think it could be a problem for disabled or weaker drivers, and adding an adapter would make it worse.

For the record, it was Aptera that was first company to petition the government to adopt the NACS. A bunch of Aptera fanboys, including myself signed a petition, for the new standard. Aptera has those Tesla connectors. Keep your eyes peeled for the show in Europe next week. One of the first PI builds should be there.

the one thing that makes me excited about many automakers switching to this plug is that the cruddy ev fast charging stations will now be directly competing with tesla's wonderfully maintained system. and i like the smaller connector too.😊

As a Hyundai EV owner, I'm excited for this now to hopefully ease the wait times at some of the CCS stations, but when Tesla allows Hyundais to charge, I'm just excited to have more options since there are some places where CCS chargers are spread out by 50 miles so if there's an issue at the charger that you planned to charge at, it's not always pleasant geting to the next closest one. I personally don't plan to charge at a Tesla Supercharging station unless there are issues at the CCS stations that I would normally use.
