Changing Conflict into Friendship. Ocean Picture Stone Quarry.

  • It is always best to work with someone rather than against them. So I reached out to my claim neighbour Nick and arranged a trip into the Ocean Picture Stone Quarry. We cooperatively worked out claim boundaries, and shared ideas and some stones. Smoothed over some bad blood from the past, and agreed on a path forward in cooperation.
    My number one wish in our community is that everyone, EVERYONE would get along and work together. We are getting closer.
    Thanks Nick.

    Hi Dan, I drill holes in Concrete for a living.
    The ROK Drill bits you are using are absolute garbage.
    Spend the money on Hilti Drill bits & if you can try to keep them cool by pouring water on them intermittently.
    Your cost per hole will be lower.

      Hi Nick. Was all of the surface rock you were looking at from blasting or did you have exposed sections of the seam? It may be time to bring in some digging equipment or do some core samples to see if that seam does dip back down on your claim. Not a claim jumper, just a curious rockhound. I usually hunt in Southern AZ and I'm always trying to figure out how geology decides where to put the good stuff.

      It must be awfully tempting when the mother load vein is less than 100 feet away. Trail cams can be pretty well hidden these days, so if you see one, realize that it's probably there _for_ you to see, and not what is actually reliably recording you.

    Watching the use of "feather-and-wedge" always reminds me of the days when I used a sledge hammer to drive-in ground rods. I now use a bit made for that purpose that fits into the hammer-drill. We were taught not to use water on carbide as the thermal shock cracks the carbide

    • @CothranMike
      @CothranMike หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Danhurd this is going to be TL;DR for most of us, but then again I never tell folks something they do not know, I just remind them of facts in evidence we all see.
      If you start cool, stay cool, there is no micro cracks. Sudden quench is what you were taught to avoid, and what your comments indicate. The lack of cooling results in the blue of the carbide supporting steel we see. Just a trickle of water will work, wisp of steam to know you are running hot. Water boils well below the micro crack heat affected zone. If the steel holder of the carbide is blue you are drilling too hot. Start cool, stay cool, no worries. Also less chance of the dreaded silicosis results from dry drilling.
      If you think there is water in the pit before you travel to the dig site then bring a few small one-use drink bottles to dip and use. If you plan to bring water get it close to the site rather than haul it from home. To increase bit life use only as much water as needed to control dust and slow down when you see steam, the bit of carbide can take the heat fine, the brazeing material is good with that level of heat as well, it is the supporting steel which you wish to protect [blue color is an indicator of bad choices].

    • @svbummin
      @svbummin หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Danhurd some carbide tipped drill bits can be used with water, but only when water is introduced in the beginning of the drilling process. The bit needs to be flooded the whole time…Introducing water after the bit is hot ends badly. You will also still be able to re-sharpen them afterwards 👍

    • @Danhurd
      @Danhurd  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What I have said in another video is to do it either completely under water, or completely dry. anything in between runs the risk of drying out the bit, and then quenching it.
