Mines Inspector Drops By While I'm Hard At Work On The Ocean Picture Stone Claim!

  • The BC Ministry of Mines "Titles Inspector" wanted to check out my workings at the Ocean Picture Stone claim. So we arranged a day when I could let him in through the locked gates and he could do a full inspection of my claim, and also the surrounding claims. It was great talking with him and showing him what I was doing, and how I extract Ocean Picture Stone from the quarry.

As a plumbing/heating guy for years, I have a LOT of experience cutting through stone and concrete. You can control where a stone breaks by pre-driling in appropriate places with a very long and thin bit. Say a 1/4" x 12" long. Putting a row of holes an inch apart then using your chisel tucked one corner in the hole for a while and then moving to the next. It will usually break on the line of holes..

How to start a rock habit: first you buy a specimen or two of Ocean Picture Stone. Then you think "what if I could just change the shape a little bit". Now you're on a deep dive into cabbing and slabbing. Then it seems clear what equipment to buy. Just a little bit of budgeting, done! (Ha, hardly. Accessories for cabbing machine! Then, stand-alone slab saw. Bulk purchase mineral oil). Living space may be rearranged to accommodate. Now you need to buy a lot of chips so you can learn on them, lest you ruin the magical pieces you love. Also, you are buying pieces that you might want to slab and cab, but maybe like as a specimen. Also, what with having more small stuff than you're going to cab, buying a tumbler from the seller of your cool vintage slab saw will be a totally reasonable add-on purchase. Might necessitate a deep dive on tumbling media. What you're not expecting is that once people find out what you're doing, they will start bringing you rocks. Work out a new life balance where you have ample rock-time. This particular rock habit? No regrets :) Thanks D's Hurd!

I hope you're okay, Dan. Your chest pain sounds like the possible beginnings of pneumonia. I hope you take care of yourself. At our ages it's really easy to get sick or to hurt ourselves. But we have a tendency to act like we're in our 20s or 30s because our brains still feel that way. I know mine does. In November 2022, I was still working fulltime and I ended up with double pneumonia. I almost died but I learned my lesson.

I'd love to see a "So you think I should?" segment regularly! I was thinking saw about 4 mins before you talked about why you don't!

Thanks for all the content, Dan! Great calm and informative stuff. The results pics/vids at the end were amazing... I live in Bali, so half of my oceanfront pictures look like those! Big red or black natural jetties out into incredible blue waves... literally around the world, Mother Nature is consistent and gorgeous. Thanks again

I think the reason why small chunks sells well is because of stone tumbling. It looks good when polished.
