  • A new season on the opal field begins and I must say we are filled with hope, at the possibility that this year will be the year we find the big one!
To kick things off myself and JC head down into the family opal mine in an attempt to make some quick money fossicking for opal in old timer backfill.
We spend considerable time sieving by hand with an old school shaker table.
To our great excitement we discovered quite a few killer gems along with fossil wood and specimens pieces.
While underground we also had to do a little work on our kanga loader replacing a tyre which with the proper tool for the job was easy done!
We also found a bit of wildlife making its home done the mine!
We hope you all enjoyed the video please leave us a comment and tell us what you would like to see more or less of.

I grew up on a farm. When I was 13, my dad brought a box with a part for INSIDE the tractor transmission. He put a box of tools on top of the box and gave me 3 days to finish the part change. I finished it before 36 hours were up, and I love mechanicking ever since.

Hey Guys. Just watched your filtering through dust and stones for those beautiful coloured stones we call Opal. My Grandfather, Herbert Wilson with Grandmother Ethel were one of Coober Pedys Pioneers. Grandad in the 50's, found a giant piece that made it to World status called the Australis Olympus. HE sold it back in the day for over £500's. Today worth Millions IF it's not cut up and on display in Sydney. Your show melted my Heart with nostalgia. I am 75 yrs, but I missed living in Dugouts.
Never give up because there is a Vein just waiting for you both. Cheers Shirley V. Vic. Goodluck

my grandfather mined for opals. he found a fabulous huge stone, had it cut, set in 18ct gold and mailed it to me in canada in a matchbox, with a stamp on one side, and a partial address on the other. I got it on my 12 birthday, and have worn it every day since then. it's been resized, reset, stepped on my horses, bashed around, and fallen out of its setting, and I'm still wearing it. i'm over 65 now. it still looks great.

Why Are you excited by seeing wood??

    • @jillellis62
      @jillellis62 ปีที่แล้ว +42

@@jeanetteilm50 any wood down there is beyond “AGED” possibly hundreds of thousands of years or more & as you can see there are ZERO trees there & so how old do you think the wood would actually be? Wood changes composition over thousands of years, when compacted with other organic material & even under heated pressure. Even sometimes it can change into an actual gem- like a black gem (forgot the name), but where you’ll still see the lines of the original wood in the gems.. The age & the process it must go thru over the years is pretty amazing. You can bet whatever age & process these opals went through, that wood has went thru the same; making them very old & valuable to the right collector.
I’ve also heard this opal is only found in Australia, no where else in the world. If that be the case, then not only is the Opal gem worth way more than it’s given credit, but everything else in that mine should be considered as such as well- in my opinion. I’m in North Carolina, USA & in my small town I love to check our local water area for gems & do get lucky sometimes. I found a black gem that used to be a tree- I had no idea until last week what exactly I found- it looks like coal, but it’s not, it’s much harder & you can see the lines in it. So, I guess the beauty is in the eye of the beholder really if one asks “why the wood”? Life is precious in all forms, but there is something extra special about these finds, especially for those of us that seek them out. 🤗

This reminds me of an episode of Outback Opal Hunters from Mintabe, just before it was all shut down. One family, (father, son, daughter-in-law) operation was trying to get as much opal as they could in their final few weeks before all miners had to leave, so the father had them dig out an old mine shaft where he’d dumped tons of opal-bearing rock years before, as he wasn’t able to work it at the time. It was loaded with prime Mintabe opal!

Be nice to be able to buy/rent them easily, without joining a big provider or buying Discovery etc. I don't watch TV and mainly watch youtube. This rather reminds me of what I was doing many, many years ago. I had a grinder, two or three saws (commercially made) a couple I built (can lid blades -mud) built a faceting machine. Did some carvings. Actually made a little money!
The best part of the operation was when I began buying "mine run" mail-order from "Coober Peddy" if memory serves. Half-pound bags.
Lot of books probably about 2-year degree in geology & minerology. Self directed with input from a couple geology ProfsI knew.
Lots of fun, but a lot headaches and "midnight oil"
    Thanks much. Subscribed.
