      @TheL4W ปีที่แล้ว

@@alexsclewis The humans attacked the indigenous people of another place for no reason but colonizing (call it a reboot, if you will).
The humans say the bugs sent an asteroid through the whole galaxy to destroy Earth. Let's analyze that: The speed of the asteroid was a few km/h (we see the it in the movie, it rammed Carmens ship). That would have taken millions of years from the bug world to Earth. Humans were not a threat at that time, so that is BS. Around the moon there is a ring of guns pointing into space not shooting the asteroid down? And I get that Carmens ship is off communication after hitting that asteroid, but although they know that it is heading towards Earth they do not turn around and warn them? They do have a Warp Drive... So, let's face it: The "asteroid attack" was staged and gave the military an excuse to attack the bugs. Why would the military want to do that, you ask? Because they lose grip on the people. Rico would have quit the military if not for the reason his home town was destroyed and he will most likely not have been the only one. People just joined the military to get citizen status for the benefits that come with it (watch the shower scene, it is all there). And if you need one last clue: Although Buenos Aires got destroyed on a regular day, interestingly enough Ricos teacher just "happened" to not be there and be able to immediately get a platoon of his own and a new arm? -Long story short: The humans are the invaders of bug territory without being provoked.

Starship Troopers is one of my favorite films, and it's a fantastic satire of fascism and militarism in general. If you don't recognize the satirical clues early on, the film will have most people (including me when I was a teenager) cheering for the fascist federation the whole way through, even as the pointless war strips the main characters of most of their humanity. And it still manages to be a good movie either way, whether you enjoy it for the satire or for the straightforward sci-fi action.
Also, the actor who played Johnny Rico is the father of the actress who played Chrissy in Stranger Things 4, if you've seen that.

This movie is a satire, based on the 1959 Robert Heinlein novel, which proved to be controversial at the time. When Paul Verhoeven read the book, he stopped after reading two chapters, calling depressing and boring. When he made the film, he wanted to mock Nazism, Fascism, Communism and Totalitarianism.
It drew negative Reviews by Critics when they accused of glorifying Nazism, when it was supposed to mock military propaganda.
The film was a box office disappointment, making $122 million dollars against a $100 million dollar budget. It was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to Titanic.
It has sconce gained a cult following.

Not by me. I absolutely loathe this movie. It's the only movie I've ever seen in my entire life that I almost walked out on. I wasted $8.00 (not including popcorn and drink) on this. Anytime I and my kids were somewhere that sells DVD's, if they brought it to me to buy, I'd make them put it back. Happened enough times that it kinda became a running joke. Frankly, I'd celebrate if they decided to go all E.T. Atari game on all copies of it.
I've seen and participated in debates about this so-called film, and no one has been able to convince me that it has any redeeming value whatsoever, except maybe what'shername's boobs. Satire or not, it has no resemblance to the original story, and should have been - at the very least - called something else. I might have liked it then, but calling it "Starship Troopers" means I expect it to somewhat resemble the book it's titled after. Hell, Keanu Reeves' "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and Tom Cruise's "War of the Worlds" are better adaptations of the source material, and I'm not a huge fan of those, either.
Edit: I didn't watch Jen's reaction, but I'm a subscriber, so still "liked" it.

No need to worry about having to do extra censoring - it doesn’t affect the fun of watching your reaction at all! And this was a LOT of fun! Can’t wait to see you react to Robocop now 😁
When Starship Troopers came out, critics hated it and seemed to take it pretty much at face value, missing all the obvious satire and thinking that the movie was just a big dumb action thing that didn’t realise how awful and cynical its portrayal of war was, and must’ve believed that all the fascist imagery was by accident. Joke’s on them, I guess! Nothing is by accident in a Paul Verhoeven film - he knows exactly what he’s doing, and this was his meditation on how war makes fascists of everyone involved. He was more qualified to speak of this than the critics, too, having grown up in Occupied Holland during the Second World War. The whole movie is a propaganda film, which is why all the leads are beautiful, everything is brightly lit, the sets are clean and the music is triumphant. The fun is watching the characters occasionally notice that things aren’t quite as nice as they seem, and the tragedy is that at the end the survivors are 100% complicit in the whole thing. Okay, film study over!

Loved the reactions and nuggets of wisdom :)
    Here's an interesting fact:
    "
The 1997 release of Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers generated controversy for its obvious Nazi imagery and ironic endorsement of a fascist future. Based on Robert Heinlein's equally controversial novel in which a militarized Earth is engaged in a war of annihilation against a race of insects, Verhoeven's film portrays a society that embraces the logic of extermination and uses Nazi language and signifiers to express eliminationist rhetoric at every turn. Schools, the media, and the future military consisently invoke Nazi terminology and allusions to frame the conflict against the “Arachnids.” From the blatant mimicry of Triumph of the Will to the twisted use of Frank Capra's Why We Fight series, Verhoeven cleverly mixes Nazi imagery with the patriotic fervor promoted in American propaganda films from the Second World War. Verhoeven attempts to seduce the audience into accepting and even cheering for genocide on a galactic scale. "

i mean yes but in this particular case is it bad? sure they want to exterminate the bugs but that's because the bugs want it too.
I haven't read the book so sorry im only going from movie knowledge, but the first "settelers" were mormons that wanted to either live there or speak with the bugs and they got brutally massacred, then the bugs send a meteor to strike earth, i don't think sending a big rock is a kind of greeting but i don't speak aracnid, and then we see they are getting smarter as a species what are the humans in this case spossed to do ?
I get that the IP uses imagery that is not very savory and very evil in nature but it uses the means not the message. at least in my opinion, i could be completly wrong and in the book the humans are really shown to be the bad guys. And if so, ok they got it comming. But going only by movie knowledge, this looks less like "galactic-scale genocide" but more of a fight for survival.

13:52 Mark! Well, I don't feel like repeating here what I already wrote about at "R Knights" especially because I share to my "Facebook" account and repeating myself would be redundant there!
For example, both women on the ship are in separate breast-themed episodes of "Seinfeld" and Patrick Muldoon once took a turn as "Austin Reed" on "Days of Our Lives". 😉
But your cute insert is something new to react to! 🎉 Ahem.
Uh, I would replace "mob" with "stampede" in this context. 😳 A mob tends to attack Baron Frankenstein's castle while a stampede of people are running in fear from something or to something or they are otherwise excited. 🤔 Maybe "rush"? "Frenzied crowd"? A word that doesn't evoke lynching! 😮

I'm glad you were able to get the edit to pass copyright! I definitely wished, by the end of the movie, that Carmen should have been skewered by those bugs for how she treated Johnny.

I really liked this movie even though it was nothing like the book. The director even admitted that he didn't read it he had an assistant read it and tell him about it. I highly recommend the book I have read it dozens of times and It has some interesting ideas about social issues especially since it came out in the 70's.

I have read the book as well since the author is my favorite of all time. I also agree that it was very different from the book.

I mean. The book was all "fascism is amazing!" and the movie obviously is a parody that doesn't think fascism is great. I'm not mad about someone not promoting fascism tbh.

      @@AnnekeOosterink No, it wasn't.
The book showed the soldiers as just trying to survive, not conquerors.
