MVP is Timothy Dalton as MY First-Favorite James Bond!! LK-MVP is the Cello, because it really came in handy! (LOL) Worst Award goes to...Koskov, because he's such an annoying Pest!
Fun fact: actor Andreas Wisniewski - Necros, the blonde baddie who "got the boot" - also played the blonde "Ho ho ho" baddie John McClain kills in _Die Hard_ & one of arms dealer Max's henchmen opposite Tom Cruise in the first _Mission: Impossible._
If you want a fun film with Timothy Dalton (he's not the lead, but has a lot of screen time), 1980's Flash Gordon. Hot Fuzz is a more recent film to see him.
Timothy Dalton is my favorite Bond, and I am a massive Bond fanatic, but even still, by far and away my favorite role of his is Simon Skinner in Hot Fuzz.
As a Norwegian James Bond fan, I feel very proud that one of my favorite bands, Norway's most famous pop/rock band and one of Europe's best 1980s band a-ha had the honor of making the soundtrack to "The Living Daylight". ❤🇧🇻 a-ha became the first non-British and non-American artist/band to record a James Bond soundtrack, in Bond history.
I was obsessed with a-ha growing up and still following to an extent. Was delighted when they it was announced that they made The living daylights. No jealousy despite being swedish. 😉
@@jenmurrayxo Barry was all set to do Licence To Kill but had to bail out because he had not yet fully recovered from a throat surgery. After Licence to Kill there was a 6 and a half hiatus and by then Barry had moved on to other projects. But he will always remain the quintessential composer for James Bond.
Michael Kamen did a nice score for the next Dalton movie. Eric Serra’s GoldenEye was great but not the best. John Barry gave a positive review on David Arnold’s album “Shaken and Stirred”, which eventually asked Barbara Broccoli to hire David for composing the 2nd Brosnan movie
The assassin in this film is actor/dancer Andreas Wisenewski. He also played in Die Hard(1988). His character was the first terrorist McClane killed, who happened to be Karl's brother. Great review!
Dalton has a long film career. Notable movie performances in addition to the Bond films include The Lion in Winter, Flash Gordon, The Rocketeer, and Hot Fuzz. There’s a 1983 BBC version of Jane Eyre with him that he’s wonderful in even if he’s probably too handsome for the part. He’s also an incredibly accomplished stage actor.
Timothy Dalton has also appeared in tv shows and did a miniseries in 1994 in which he turned in his resignation from playing James Bond at that time and turned down offer to play Bond a 3rd time in Goldeneye as didn’t want to commit to a multi picture and keep playing Bond into his 50s as was 48 years old when Goldeneye was in preproduction in 1994 and Brosnan took over.
He was great as Prince Rupert in the otherwise mediocre 1970 "Cromwell" movie, and he could have played Bond right after Connery. Shame he only got two Bond movies.
@@Ammeeeeeeer he was offered the role of Bond numerous times including On Her Majestys Secret Service but at that time he felt he was too young to play Bond at age 22 before George Lazenby took over in 1968 when cast. Timothy Dalton was considered if Roger Moore stepped down as his initial 5 film contract ended with Moonraker but he came back for his last 3 Bonds on a film to film basis and each time was almost offered the role but Moore came back each time.
Love love love _TLD._ My #1 Bond flick. A grounded, witty Cruz Smith/Le Carre-esque Cold War thriller w/ _Die Hard-level_ action, & a rare feel-good ending. Connery was the "cinema Bond"; Moore, the "Saturday matinee Bond" - Dalton is the "grim, literary Bond". Always impresses how John Glen upped his game from OP/AVTAK.
Timothy Dalton is a classically trained Shakespearean stage actor in addition to his starring movie roles and television appearances. He stars alongside Simon Pegg in "Hot Fuzz" (2007) ~ a comedy police action/drama/murder mystery movie which is very well liked and worth a reaction IMHO. Really good reaction Jen, your excitement and enthusiasm for Bond is very enjoyable for us watching along. Can't wait until you hit the Brosnan Bonds. 🤩
Apparently Timothy Dalton was never meant to be James Bond, it was to go from Roger Moore to Pierce Brosnan, but Brosnan was tied into a contract for TV show Remmington Steele at the time.
Love the way that you become so absorbed , your enthusiasm is infectious and your movie accent is adorable . You get your explosions , your kissing , the works, all in one movie !
Yes bond reactions with Jen are always my favourite. Even though he only played as James Bond twice. I though Timothy Dalton played a great James Bond, this movie and license to kill is in my top 10 favourites
A lot of people don't realise that Timothy Dalton is technically a Welsh actor, as he was born in the North Wales seaside town of Colwyn Bay. So that means that we have had Scottish (Connery), Irish (Brosnan), Welsh (Dalton) and English (Craig) actors as James Bond, plus George Lazenby an Australian actor.
This film was released in 1987 at the height of the AIDS crisis and the whole scare surrounding it, which is why Bond is much less of a lothario in this film and only beds one woman. I actually think it works to the film's advantage, since it makes Bond and Kara's relationship feel more genuine and meaningful compared to most of his other one-off flings, which is definitely one of the film's best attributes. Aside from that, this is a highly underrated Bond film, it's get fantastic action and stunts, a surprisingly complex and interesting plot, one hell of a killer soundtrack (the last in the series to be done by the late great John Barry), and of course Timothy Dalton as Bond. He's honestly a fantastic Bond, and truly ahead of his time; audiences weren't ready to accept his dark and less jokey take on the character at the time, but after Daniel Craig did something similar with his films to great success, Dalton's been reappraised and rightfully seen for the excellent 007 that he is
I for one always did rate this one very highly, but then I've always had a thing for 'darker' takes in movies and TV shows also. The Gibraltar opening was truly spectacular at the time, and the car chase with the Aston Martin was also a grand experience. Some other aspects of the movie haven't aged as gracefully perhaps, like the 'noble freedom fighters' in Afghanistan which turned into the Taliban in later years, and so on... :P Still, it's a really good Bond movie and Dalton deserved a few more goes at it in my view. Then again, his misfortune opened the way for Pierce Brosnan, which wasn't exactly a bad thing either.
The 4th of 5 Bond films, directed by John Glen. Timothy Dalton was my ideal Bond as an kid and I understood the Bond character better. Dalton was first approached to play Bond at age 25 for On Her Majesty Secret Service (after Connery, before Lazenby). Although he was a fan of the novels, Dalton declined to the role because he knew he was too young to play the role. When Roger Moore was done being Bond, Pierce Brosnan (pre-Goldeneye) was prepared for The Living Daylights. The Remington Steele tv series (Brosnan was the lead) on NBC was going to end. But NBC actually greenlit another season and Brosnan couldn't be in the movie. Franchise producer Albert Broccoli remembered Dalton from when OHMSS was being developed and got him casted for TLD after finishing 2 other films. Dalton does play Bond at 95% of who the character is. The Aston Martin V8 was my first, favorite Bond car. The theme song by A-Ha and the 2 songs by The Pretenders, so good. If anything, Timothy Dalton had to walk as 007, so that Daniel Craig could run.
Timothy Dalton has had a wild career. He has leading man looks, but frequently chose character roles. Among some really good Dalton roles: - Neville Sinclair in 'The Rocketeer' (1991) - He plays an Errol Flynn type of actor in 1940s Hollywood...to say more would spoil things. - Prince Barin of Arboria in 'Flash Gordon' (1980) - Based on the 1930s comic strip, with a song score by Queen, and a really amazing cast...this is cheesy, but amazing. One of my all-time favorites! - King Philip II of France in 'The Lion In Winter' (1969) -- This one is awesome with Katherine Hepburn in one of her Oscar-winning roles as Eleanor of Aquitaine, Peter O'Toole as King Henry II of England, and Anthony Hopkins as Prince Richard the Lionheart. - Group Captain Peter Townsend (ret) in the fifth season of 'The Crown' - Rhett Butler in 'Scarlett' a sequel to 'Gone With the Wind', was a made-for-TV miniseries with Joanne Whalley (Willow) as Scarlett O'Hara. It was decent, not outstanding...but he did a great Rhett Butler without being Clark Gable. - Donald Whitfield in '1923' (a prequel to 'Yellowstone' just renewed for a second season) He is the third James Bond actor to share screen time with Harrison Ford...Sean Connery in 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' and Daniel Craig in 'Cowboys and Aliens' are the other two. There was only one Bond girl in this one, and it was partly due to pressure in Hollywood to lessen sexual content that was "promiscuous" due to the AIDS epidemic, which was still really big at the time. This meant that Bond had to be more reserved, and Dalton was on board with not doing tons of love scenes with different actresses.
The sniper rifle Bond uses at the beginning is the Walther WA 2000, an expensive semiautomatic precision weapon made by the same manufacturer of Bond’s Walther PPK. Doesn’t show up in movies very often
If I remember correctly, The Living Daylights is just a short story that covers the adventure of smuggling Koskov out of Russia, basically the beginning of the movie. The rest of the film was written to extend it as it was a fairly short story. It’s also, I believe, the last of Ian Fleming’s actual work to become a Bond film. Everything after this up to Daniel Craig was written for the screen, based on elements of Fleming’s work.
Timothy Dalton is a perfect poem, his eyes😍, his voice😋, his hair☺️, his complexion🥵, is a pretty great actor🥵, an underrated bond, he deserved more bond's films. This man looks like a prince 😘 Timothy Dalton 😋🥵🫠😘❣️
Always have a soft spot for this one as it is the first Bond film I saw in the cinema. The Mujahideen leader, Kamran Shah, was played by Art Malik, whom you may remember as the villain from True Lies.
The 15th fantastic Bond reaction! Can’t tell you how exciting it was when this came out and we saw a more “realistic” kind of Bond action… so I’m really happy that you enjoyed it. The next outing is an outstanding one!!! Can’t wait;)
Jen's Bond reactions are the best things on TH-cam. And a tip of the hat to the editor who adds all the quirky fun. This is one of my favorite Bond movies. Maryam d'Abo lights up the screen. Timothy Dalton is very underrated, He's my 3rd favorite Bond behind Connery and Pierce Brosnan. He brought some needed seriousness to the role after Roger Moore's over-quipping and quasi-campiness, while keeping the sophistication and gadgetry that seemed to get lost in Daniel Craig's incantation. The title song was by the group A-ha, who also had a big hit with "Take On Me".
JONATHAN, believe it or not, Jen is the one responsible for the quirky fun. She adds all her own graphics, Wisdom nuggets, flames, champagne glasses, and so on. Very nice comment by the way 👍
This is one of my favourites, and I don't mind the change in tone at all. Probably the closest to Ian Fleming's Bond - more spy stuff and a little less goofy, but still lots of action and fun. And Timothy Dalton is a great actor who pops up in all kinds of things - keep Flash Gordon on the list for when you're in a silly mood!
Dalton seems much more comfortable as a character actor than a leading man. He’s extraordinary in “Hot Fuzz” and “The Rocketeer” not to mention about as sinfully attractive as can be in his first movie, “The Lion in Winter” where he holds his own against the likes of Peter O’Toole and Anthony Hopkins. 🥰
It looks like you had the same thought as me! Necros (headphones guy) is basically the original Agent 47 from the Hitman games; Uses disguises to infiltrate areas undetected, uses a garotte as a trademark weapon, and the kill in Vienna is so much like how you would set up an Accident Kill in the games, complete with being disguised as a balloon salesman.
I liked how this brought back Bond to his darker roots, without sacrificing great action, stunts, and gadgets, with the humor limited to quips, vs Moore’s “dad jokes”.
Glad you finally gave the great John Barry an award for the music Jen. One of the greatest multi Oscar, Grammy & BAFTA film composers in cinema history. Fitting that he also made a cameo appearance near the end because, as mentioned in the comments, it was his last time scoring for the Bond films.
Dalton had a great turn as Rochester in Jane Eyre 1983 mini and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights in 1971. Also played Rhett Butler in Scarlett: The Sequel to Gone With the Wind mini. He's so good in period clothes. Swoon.
Timothy Dalton is a great actor. He plays James Bond in a More serious vain like Daniel Craig. As far as I know that's how James Bond is portrayed in Ian Fleming's books. He did this one & License to Kill (1989) too. The theme song in this - is by a-Ha. a-Ha is 1 of my favorite pop-bands from the 80's. They had some great songs like 'Take on Me' (great music video too) and 'The Sun always shines on T.V. Timothy Dalton also played 'Prince Baron' in the Flash Gordon movie (1980). That movie is a lot of fun and the band 'Queen' did the soundtrack for the movie. Their music in the movie was Awesome !!! Cheers Jen......
Hey Tom, I just wanted to say ' I'm Sorry ' The other day we had gotten more bad news (that I really don't want to talk about on TH-cam) I do hope you can forgive me.
@@e.d.2096 It's OK Eric, I understand...or, I would understand; either way, We're Cool!! I have been missing you, My Friend; how are you doing otherwise..? Did you hear TBR's Announcement yesterday..? He and Samantha are Pregnant! Also, PiB posted an "Open Range" Reaction earlier, and I haven't checked it out yet...
@@tomhoffman4330 I'm good Tom, and yes I did see TBR's announcement yesterday. It couldn't happen to a nicer couple. Their so cute, always arm and arm.
Timothy Daltan was also in PENNY DREADFUL. A series with Eva Green. He also played the Chief in DC's DOOM PATROL series. But aside from these and his 007 films, I remember him as the villain in Disney's THE ROCKETEER. My favorite Daltan movie is 007 LICENSE TO KILL. 😁 -OG
Nice work Jen! Two things- firstly there was 2 girls if you count the girl on the boat in the opening credits. Secondly this was made when the AIDS epidemic was at it's height and it was a deliberate choice to make a less promiscuous Bond in that context. Looking forward to you swooning over Timothy's next Bond outing! 😀
@@jenmurrayxo You’re welcome :) Hopefully at the end of the ride you’ll have the perfect villain lair! 😂 And a great appreciation for the wonderful books Ian Fleming wrote!
Jen, guess who was supposed to take over for Roger Moore. Pierce Brosnan, in the next upcoming Bond series when you are done with "Licence to Kill." He was tied up with the show "Remington Steele" and wasn't able to break his contract. When Dalton didn't work out... Pierce was back in action.
Timothy Dalton was originally supposed to return for Goldeneye but he turned it down as felt by then with the long hiatus in filming from Licence to kill in 1989 to Goldeneye he decided to move on to other projects and resigned from playing Bond officially in 1994 while doing a mini series and Pierce Brosnan took over. Dalton almost played Bond in early 1980s as was picked to play Bond in For Your Eyes Only but Roger Moore decided to return as Bond as did with Octopussy and A View To A Kill in which Dalton was a back up in case Moore didn’t return and Pierce Brosnan was also considered then to.
@@scottknode898 Dalton also said he was uncomfortable in the role of Bond as written. He wanted to play it a little more light-heartedly and not quite so seriously as seen in his two outings. Dalton was correct. He acted like there was a rod stuck up his rear. When he played devilishly roguish bad guys, he lit up the screen with a gleam in his eyes. Brosnan was the opposite because he thought his last Bond film was far too silly (it was) and demanded script approval on his next Bond film. The EON company rep called him late at night, awakening him from sleep, to fire him. Daniel Craig also felt his Bond should have been a little bit of Moore and a little bit of Connery. He complained that his Bond had no fun and was a sour puss when these were supposed to be light adventure romps. Craig does have comedic chops, so it could have worked.
@@dan_hitchman007 your right Brosnan said he met with Producer Barbara Broccoli as he was interested in doing Casino Royale before ultimately deciding to reboot the series and hire a younger actor and Pierce Brosnan wanted more money as well and Broccoli fired him as he said it during their meeting and Brosnan never worked for Eon Productions or Barbara Broccoli again after that.
Dalton was the most experienced Bond, acting-wise having a Shakespearean background. He was originally considered around 1971, but was thought to be too young.
Another rewatch and another great reaction by you, Jen. As you probably know, Timothy Dalton, is my favourite 'Bond' of all, plus in real life he's a great guy too. I'm going to do at least one more rewatch tonight before I go to bed.
The Living Daylights is in my top ten Bond films. It's such a breath of fresh air after the silliness of the last couple of Moore movies. Great reaction Jen!
THE NAME IS DALTON! T I M O T HY DALTON! Lol. I am a lifelong Bond fan, & Dalton plays 007 closest to the Ian Fleming (author of the 007 novels) literary Bond. Connery made the character his own (but not according to Fleming.) Fleming did not aporove of Connery for the role, but later came to like Connery's portrayal. So enjoy the next Dalton movie!!! And thanks again for your wonderful questions, insights, and commentary. By the way, Moneypenny for Dalton is sooo gorgeous! Lol So fun to watch movies with you!!!!!❤😊❤😊
I remember Timothy Dalton as Prince Barron in "Flash Gordon". In one scene he is chained to a dungeon wall with Topol(For your eyes only). He turns to Topol and says "Tell me more of this man Houdini." Don't worry about Q, he has several more movies to appear in.
The rifle was a Walther WA-2000. it was designed as a police sniper rifle, not military. It's really heavy. The thing on his hand was a shooting glove. They are kind of like a soft cast so you can support the rifle with out grabbing it. Grabbing can change the point of aim. It's usually used for standing, off-hand rifle competitions. Smiert Spionem was part of From Russia with Love, and mentioned in Octopussy. Dalton was also in The Rocketeer from the 90's which was a really fun movie. He was also in Hot Fuzz, which is seriously worth a reaction. For the Greater good. This one had a really deep plot for a bond movie. I thought this was great when it came out. His allies at the end were the Taliban, so that didn't age well. The jeep getting pulled out of the plane is real, except the part where you drive out. You'll see General Whittaker in a little bit in a different role.
I was introduced to James Bond during the Roger Moore era, went back and read the books, then watched the Sean Connery movies. Timothy Dalton is the most literary Bond of all of the Bonds, thus my favorite. EDIT: The rifle you were enamored with in the beginning 5:19 is the Walther WA 2000.
A-ha did the theme song. Also dis the groundbreaking "take on me" and "the sun always shines on TV" Which was the first ever record single I bought age 10ish
Fun fact: the different double O's at the very beginning were cast with actors who looked like prior James Bonds (George Lazenby, Roger Moore) so they could toy with the audience expectations of what the new James Bond would look like.
I love following you on your James Bond journey. It’s been awesome! Now on to Licence to kill, a very dark installment in the series and over time one of my favorites. Maybe in part because the first half is set and filmed in my favorite place Key West. Great scene at the Earnest Hemingway house, with the polydactyl (Hemingway) cats and Timothy Dalton giving a nod to Hemingway’s “A farewell to Arms”, when told to turn over his weapon. Also Robert Davi plays a great villain and just like everything else about this movie a very underrated theme song by Gladys Knight.
This movie came out in 1987, which was the 25th anniversary of the film series. Dalton didn't really get a fair chance at the time, but he's gotten more respect for his turn as Bond over time. If you go back to the novels, Dalton is the most literal Bond. He actually fits the physical description of Bond as described by Fleming of any of the actors. They originally wanted Pierce Brosnan at the time, but he was doing the tv show "Remington Steele" and the producers wouldn't let him out of his contract. So, he would have to wait to play the role. Just as they do with each actor, they updated the series to fit the times. Since they went with a younger actor, it definitely made sense to recast Moneypenny.
A woman after my own heart! I did the same thing as you about a year ago, just marathoned all the Bond films, watching most of them for the first time. Dalton is criminally underappreciated as Bond! Both of his films are in my personal top 10 Bond films, with License to Kill being second only to Goldeneye! Fun fact: I've been reading the original Bond novels lately and Dalton's Bond is without a doubt the closest to book Bond! Also, I highly recommend watching Never Say Never Again at some point! I know some view it as "non-canon", but, if you miss Connery's Bond, it is a pretty good send-off for him, better than Diamonds Are Forever!
My favourite Bond movie. It has everything one expects and more. A riveting plot, great characters, global locations, the best Bond Car bells and whistles (Missiles and Lasers), incredible music and a stunning Bond girl. Timothy Dalton, to me, is the best Bond ever! It's a pity he did only two movies. Edit: The Soundtrack needs a special mention. John Barry's last Bond movie I think and the music is just about the best among all the 25 movies.
John Barry did a lot of good music for many films, not just James Bond, but that's what he is most famous for I personally love his music for The Ipcress File (track - A Man Alone) and also for the TV series called Vendetta (Two tracks - Vendetta, and Danny Scipio). One other TV theme to add is the theme for the TV series The Adventurer. They can be heard on youtube. He had a Jazz band when he first started and you can hear his jazz influence in his music. He also did the music for Zulu, Born Free, High Road To China, Out Of Africa, Deadfall (he also takes part in this film as the conductor of his orchestra, you actually see him playing the music for the film which is supposed to be a concert) and one of my favourites the music for The Quiller Memorandum. He won an award for his music to the film Dances With Wolves. His music is different from Ennio Morricone's, you can hear in Morricone's music his classical influences compared to Barry's jazz influences. Both are great, and both lend something to the films they are used for. Music can enhance the film.
24:56 one of the greatest scenes in all of James Bond movies. That interrogation scene makes Dalton's James Bond such a professional, ruthless assassin who is willing to do anything to get the right info.
Maybe you didn't notice, but general Gogol actor has appeared since From Russia with Love, first as an Spectre tugh, then as a KGB member. This was his final appareance. As always, a great reaction. Loved it.
He was supposed to be the main Russian, not Pushkin (which would have been great given Bond’s history with the character), but sadly the actor was too ill to do the whole film. John Rhys Davis was excellent, but I’ll always wonder what could have been with Walter Gotell… 😢
The theme was done by Norwegian pop band A-Ha, most famous in North America for "Take on Me". Timothy Dalton is IMHO the most underrated Bond; wish he'd been in more than just the 2 movies. He was also perfect as Nevile Sinclair in The Rocketeer. Also yes, that was John Rhys Davies who played Salah in the Indiana Jones movies, and Gimli in Lord of the Rings.
Love your reaction to this as always, Jen! This is my favorite Bond film for many reasons. During my senior year in high school, I not only watched every Bond film through the last Moore, but my friend Bill also loaned me all of his James Bond books and I read them all. The next film at this point was this one. I thought Dalton was the best "book" Bond and I remembered him well from playing Prince Barin in "Flash Gordon," too. My other great memory of the film was seeing it for the first time in a theater because I was skipping school one day when I was a freshman in college. I was living at home, didn't want my parents to know I was skipping, so I saw the film 3 times back-to-back-to-back so they wouldn't know I was blowing off my classes for the day.
Thimothy Dalton plays a great Bond. You did forget about one girl. The woman from the opening scene :). You ask what else he is in. May I suggest you watch "The Rocketeer" from 1991, you would definitely enjoy it as Thimothy Dalton plays in it.
Dalton is definitely high on my list of Bonds. Charming and ruthless, and especially the balance of somebody visibly holding themselves under tight control, but also occasionally losing that control. Bond _should_ always be a slightly tragic figure...
I started with Sean and say they all bring something to 007....Brosnan was the most DASHING 007. He really looked the part in the tux Lazenby was the only one I didnt care for
45:02 - Dalton's portrayal of Bond is more ruthless, to-the-point, no-nonsense, and gets the job done. Also this was the 1980's when the Cold War was at its peak and the concept of a spy defecting to an enemy country was a very real thing that happened often. I'd say the Dalton and Brosnan flicks are my absolute favorite!
This is one of my favorites, the music and serious but still bombastic tone being my favorite aspects. Another interesting bond review to enjoy. A lot to appreciate in this one.
Probably unintentional, but since this was John Berry's last 007, it's kind of fitting that the Bond girl was a musician. He even cameos as Kara's orchestra conductor.
The Living Daylights is a short story by the late Ian Fleming. The original plot of it is Bond deliberately shoot to miss the female assassin at the window due to his gut instincts; the rest of the movie plot was fleshed out by the screen writers. By the way TLD heralded 25 years of the James Bond franchise from 1962 to 1987. Which explains why there was a new Bond and a new Miss Moneypenny. There were also more than one song composed for this particular bond movie.
The parrot that appeared in this movie also appeared in For Your Eyes Only and was once owned by Diana Rigg who played Tracy in on her majesty's secret service. Also other films starring Timothy Dalton worth checking out include Flash Gordon, The Rocketeer and Hot fuzz.
This was my first Bond. Also cool that Koskov was played by my Dutch countryman Jeroen Krabbé. I'd never seen a Dutch actor in a Hollywood movie before. He later played in The Fugitive with Harrison Ford.
Dalton is definitely one of the prettier Bonds. Before this, I think I'd only seen Dalton in "The Lion in Winter" ('68) and "Flash Gordon" ('80). After his time as James Bond, I remember his roles in "The Rocketeer" ('91), "Hot Fuzz" ('07), and handful of episodes of the TV series "Chuck" ('07-'12), and a regular part on "Penny Dreadful" ('14-'16). They toned down the zaniness from the Roger Moore movies, going for a more serious atmosphere... and I think Dalton did a fine job with what he was given... but the scripts were just... so-so. They didn't really catch on with the public, and Dalton was out after just two movies.
I see you noticed the new Moneypenny. She's played in this film and "Licence to Kill" by Caroline Bliss. Another new one will come along for the Brosnan films of this franchise.
Jen talking about Timmy D. being dashing is my life elixir. My day has now gotten 10 times better already. I am 110% gay for Timothy Dalton as Bond and hearing you talk about how he's the most "your type" out of the Bonds so far made me really happy, hahaha.
@@jenmurrayxo And his voice! I could listen to him reading the phone book all day and never stop swooning 🥰 I think you'd also really like him in The Rocketeer.
@@nikolaiquack8548 Rewatching The Rocketeer for the 1st time in forever when Disney+ launched was fun especially seeing that Timothy Dalton was in it 😃
Dalton has been in movies since the 60s, 1st film I saw him in was The Lion in Winter with Peter O'Toole, Katherine Hepburn, and Anthony Hopkins. But a personal favorite of mine is the 1980 movie Flash Gordon where he plays Prince Barin.
I actually saw this movie for the first time 3 months ago, and I remember just feeling so uneasy when he had the confrontation with Pushkin in the suite. Think I got goosebumps, and I was thinking, "Jesus, is he gonna kill him???"
John Rhys-Davies' acting in this scene was masterful...his facial expression when he says "Then I must die" with this mix of sad puppy eyes begging for mercy and at the same time resigning to accept his fate...he absolutely sells it!
Pushkin was meant to be General Gogol, but Walter Gotell was too ill perform it, so Pushkin was created and Gogol appears in the film in a cameo role at the end instead.
Loved your reaction as you enter the next phase of James Bond actors. To me Timothy Dalton's portrayal of 007 is most like Ian Fleming's master spy of his novels. Intense, poised and witty, and a cold-blooded killer when necessary. Cast note: Art Malik who played the imprisoned Afghan warlord Kamran Shah is also outstanding as the evil Salim Abu Aziz in James Cameron's True Lies.
Not sure Malik was outstanding in True Lies, we didn't see much of him and he was a bit cartoonish. Also the Russian General who pretended to defect was Dr Kimball's "friend" in The Fugitive.
Great to see you Miss Jennypenny. Your James Bond reactions are some of the most fun videos you do. However, I'm in the middle of making a beef, onion, cheddar and pepper jack pot pie, so I'll have to come back later.
The fact that James Bond gets so angry when his fellow agent dies at the carnival and sees death to spies on the balloon, first time anyone’s seen bond truly angry.

I agree, i love how Jen really gets into the spirit of it, even more than other enthusiastic Bond reactors i've seen.
Next one he gets darker, but that was the way Ian Fleming wrote bond and imagined bond to be and Timothy Dalton pulled it off perfectly.
Timothy Dalton is my favorite Bond, and I am a massive Bond fanatic, but even still, by far and away my favorite role of his is Simon Skinner in Hot Fuzz.
Mine, too.

As a Norwegian James Bond fan, I feel very proud that one of my favorite bands, Norway's most famous pop/rock band and one of Europe's best 1980s band a-ha had the honor of making the soundtrack to "The Living Daylight". ❤🇧🇻
a-ha became the first non-British and non-American artist/band to record a James Bond soundtrack, in Bond history.
They did a fine job as usual, definitely top 5 Bond themes
One of the best Bond Themes, easily!
I was obsessed with a-ha growing up and still following to an extent. Was delighted when they it was announced that they made The living daylights. No jealousy despite being swedish. 😉
And what a fine job they did!
He has a fantastic voice. Especially the acoustic versions of their songs👍
I’m totally here for Jen’s “cool dance moves” and “wisdom nuggets” 😊
“Oh I think that’s him. He’s dashing❤”
Very accurate reaction to the absolute perfection that is Timothy dalton
This was John Barry's final Bond score. He definitely ended his run on the highest of notes.
I loved it!!
And smaller feet than His sister 😂
Thanks. I thought he seemed familiar.
He also appeared in the first Mission Impossible in a small role as one of Max's bodyguards!
How did I not recognise him?
was he not also one of armsdealer Max's goons ?? The one with the lighter when Ethan asks for a light ?? the one with the long hair
Gonna have to seek out that Jane Eyre.
It's been years, but I swear that I recall seeing him at least briefly in "I, Claudius," too.
Love love love _TLD._ My #1 Bond flick. A grounded, witty Cruz Smith/Le Carre-esque Cold War thriller w/ _Die Hard-level_ action, & a rare feel-good ending.
Connery was the "cinema Bond"; Moore, the "Saturday matinee Bond" - Dalton is the "grim, literary Bond".
Always impresses how John Glen upped his game from OP/AVTAK.
Loved both the Dalton movies sooo much!! ☺️👍
He also appeared in Doctor Who as Rassilon appearing opposite David Tennant.
And his greatest role as Prince Barin of Arboria in Flash Gordon.
Apparently Timothy Dalton was never meant to be James Bond, it was to go from Roger Moore to Pierce Brosnan, but Brosnan was tied into a contract for TV show Remmington Steele at the time.
@@thomasthompson2431 Yeah I remember, I was gutted
Love the way that you become so absorbed , your enthusiasm is infectious and your movie accent is adorable . You get your explosions , your kissing , the works, all in one movie !

Yes bond reactions with Jen are always my favourite. Even though he only played as James Bond twice. I though Timothy Dalton played a great James Bond, this movie and license to kill is in my top 10 favourites
I loved Dalton!! ☺️👍
Too bad Dalton only was in two. I’d have loved to see a few more with him, and see what he did with the role as he grew into it.
Love this movie. TD nails it. ‘Throw the heart at her’. Jen you crack me up 😂As a side note,Lois Maxwell will always be my Moneypenny.
He is for sure one of the top 5 bond actors.
@Science in Engineering There were only 9 Bond actors ever
He's honestly a fantastic Bond, and truly ahead of his time; audiences weren't ready to accept his dark and less jokey take on the character at the time, but after Daniel Craig did something similar with his films to great success, Dalton's been reappraised and rightfully seen for the excellent 007 that he is
Are you forgetting the woman at the start on the boat?
Dalton is an actor. A real one.
Crazy to know Craigs role as Bond is over, time flies.
@@theriomrasputin8233 Yeah, but thank goodness that it is. The Craig era was one big slew of disasters, through no fault of Craig's own.
Dalton is seriously underrated as Bond. I adore him in the role.
Among some really good Dalton roles:
- Neville Sinclair in 'The Rocketeer' (1991) - He plays an Errol Flynn type of actor in 1940s Hollywood...to say more would spoil things.
- Group Captain Peter Townsend (ret) in the fifth season of 'The Crown'
- Rhett Butler in 'Scarlett' a sequel to 'Gone With the Wind', was a made-for-TV miniseries with Joanne Whalley (Willow) as Scarlett O'Hara.
I wonder why (sarcastic).
This was the 1st Bond movie I ever saw in theaters! After reading Fleming's novels I've appreciated Dalton's 007 portrayal.
This man looks like a prince 😘
Timothy Dalton 😋🥵🫠😘❣️
Always loved how the woman on the boat was complaining how bored she was, like a Jeep hadn't just exploded mid-air next to her 60 seconds previously!
I love how enthusiastic you are Jen. It’s so enjoyable to watch the sheer pleasure you get from these. You really get the Bond films.
I also really like how you reacted to the music in this. I think this score is amazing. I’m curious to know what instrument you play.

And he flew to Los Angeles for an episode of Charlie’s Angels before doing Flash Gordon!
Jen so needs to watch Flash Gordon.
My personal favourite Bond. Dalton did the darker, hard edged Bond way before Daniel Craig did it. He made the character more human.
Timothy Dalton, my favourite 007, shame he only played Bond twice ❤❤
I liked how this brought back Bond to his darker roots, without sacrificing great action, stunts, and gadgets, with the humor limited to quips, vs Moore’s “dad jokes”.
Glad you finally gave the great John Barry an award for the music Jen. One of the greatest multi Oscar, Grammy & BAFTA film composers in cinema history. Fitting that he also made a cameo appearance near the end because, as mentioned in the comments, it was his last time scoring for the Bond films.
This one has SO MANY great actors in it.

Nice work Jen! Two things- firstly there was 2 girls if you count the girl on the boat in the opening credits. Jen, guess who was supposed to take over for Roger Moore. Pierce Brosnan, in the next upcoming Bond series when you are done with "Licence to Kill."
He was tied up with the show "Remington Steele" and wasn't able to break his contract.
Your enthusiasm for these films is great
Another rewatch and another great reaction by you, Jen.
“Sexy ladies never just want to party, they’re always spies” 😂😂
Really like how u point out the great soundtrack not many people do that
Dalton is definitely one of my favourite Bond's. I like his more serious take on the character.
Your reactions to the Bond franchise are delightful Jen. Do go to Vienna, it's a magical place 🙂
Absolutely adore Timothy Dalton as James Bond!
That A-ha theme song is one of the best theme songs of that Bond movie series.
Yes the music is amazing! Couldn't stop singing! Dalton is a great Bond!! ☺️👍
Agreed. Barry's score for this one is a pure masterpiece.
The car makes a appearance in No Time to Die.
Dalton is my favorite Bond. I think he and Craig are the best representations of Fleming's Bond.
🏆 🥂
Thimothy Dalton plays a great Bond. You did forget about one girl. The woman from the opening scene :). You ask what else he is in. May I suggest you watch "The Rocketeer" from 1991, you would definitely enjoy it as Thimothy Dalton plays in it.

Dalton is definitely high on my list of Bonds. Charming and ruthless, and especially the balance of somebody visibly holding themselves under tight control, but also occasionally losing that control. Bond _should_ always be a slightly tragic figure...
You should definitely check out the 1970 version of "Wuthering Heights" in which a young Timothy Dalton plays Heathcliff.
Your reactions are so good, and never fail to cheer me up! You're fast approaching the Brosnan era, which is "my" Bond era, and I can't wait!
I started with Sean and say they all bring something to 007....Brosnan was the most DASHING 007. He really looked the part in the tux

3:29 One of my favorite "Bond, James Bond" deliveries. It's almost like Dalton said it purely out of obligation, which kinda made it funny to me
45:02 - Dalton's portrayal of Bond is more ruthless, to-the-point, no-nonsense, and gets the job done.
When she is saying "we are going to Vienna, they already filmed the parts before in Vienna"
Timothy Dalton was a brilliant villain in The Rocketeer and even better in Hot Fuzz
Probably unintentional, but since this was John Berry's last 007, it's kind of fitting that the Bond girl was a musician. He even cameos as Kara's orchestra conductor.
It wasn't just the one woman, there was also the one on the boat just before the intro theme started.
John Rhys Davies (General Pushkin) is also probably better known latterly for his legendary performance as Gimli in the Lord of the Rings films
What Bond said “Beautiful” in afghan: Khaista
What the subtitles get what Bond said: High Star
I LOVE your review!!! So fun! Thanks for the awesome review!
I see you noticed the new Moneypenny. She's played in this film and "Licence to Kill" by Caroline Bliss. Another new one will come along for the Brosnan films of this franchise.
The gun that you were seeing in the reaction is called the Walther 2000 sniper rifle and its also in the hitman video games as well!
Jen talking about Timmy D. being dashing is my life elixir. My day has now gotten 10 times better already. I am 110% gay for Timothy Dalton as Bond and hearing you talk about how he's the most "your type" out of the Bonds so far made me really happy, hahaha.
Sooo handsome 😍 💕
@@jenmurrayxo And his voice! I could listen to him reading the phone book all day and never stop swooning 🥰
I think you'd also really like him in The Rocketeer.
@@nikolaiquack8548 Rewatching The Rocketeer for the 1st time in forever when Disney+ launched was fun especially seeing that Timothy Dalton was in it 😃
@@jenmurrayxo "he gets angry" ...and i'm now anxiously waiting for Jen to watch License to Kill
Yes Jen, you're correct, that is indeed John Rhys Davies from The Indiana Jones movies, also a fav of mine.
Poor Dalton... in the era of Bond eventually going onto local TV his first movie has him allied with the Mujahadeen. and his second is adult rated.
Timothy Dalton was by far the best looking Bond for me too!😍
Great to see you Miss Jennypenny.
