I loved SG-1, but the universe is too large for any reaction channel. Over 350 episodes and 2 additional movies would be like a part time job just watching let alone editing. Edit. I stand corrected, with some channels with a TV or Scifi focus having attempted it (generally years in and not completed but chugging away). @@bemasaberwyn55 Joel Goldsmith also wrote some pieces for "Star Trek First Contact" together with his father. He later wrote a lot of great music for "Stargate SG-1". Even created his own themes like for the Ori arc. That music from the TV-movies "Ark of Truth" and "Continuum" are masterpieces. The title sequence of "Ark of Truth" alone when the music changes from the classic Stargate theme to the Ori theme is brilliant. One of the things that keeps this movie going briskly and makes it a delight to watch is that basically everyone is clever, competent, and perceptive. There are times when each method of special effects is better than the other. In the big picture, no science fiction film would be complete without either. You should definitely check out the TV series, "Stargate SG-1." It's one of the top tier SF series (although it's got some early installment problems in its first season). It follows after the events of the movie. It retcons a few things to better fit an ongoing series, but not all that much. There were a couple of further spinoff series, which are fun if you do enjoy SG1 but aren't on the same level.
Definitely a TV show Stargate:SG-1, starring MacGyver himself (Richard Dean Anderson) replacing Kurt Russel and Michael Shanks replacing James Spader's Dr Jackson. It came a little while after this and ran forever with a spin off or two as well - Super popular, I loved it! Great reaction, welcome to the Stargate Universe 😁

What Jackson says about getting the vowels right is spot-on. Egyptians didn’t write down vowels, only consonants. So we have don’t know how Ancient Egyptian actually sounded, we can just make educated guesses based on similar languages. Damn Jen , you really watching great science fiction movies. This is a great movie , I love the acting of Kurt Russell and James Spaces in this movie and stargate effects are awesome to this day and tv show is called star gate sg-1 which takes place after the movie with few characters from the movie. It expands on the lore that the movie touches on
@@samellowery True but it still looks the best in this movie. In fact, IMO he looks his best in this movie out of his entire filmography. And I love the guy as an actor so I don't mean anything bad by it.
0:32 David Arnold didn't score GoldenEye, but did continue to work on the first two Craig Bonds. The 3rd Roland Emmerich film that he composed for was Godzilla (1998). Emmerich also directed Universal Soldier (1992) & The Patriot (2000). The latter's music was done by John Williams.
23:58 There is, there are a lot of things on the subject, there was a cool show called "Ancient Aliens", that will give you something to think about. The "Stargate SG1" tv show continues more or less where this film finished, it is well worth a watch, even if it's just the unedited pilot episodes, that should be enough to get you intrigued, it was a very cool show, with a great cast, playing the same characters more or less.
Welcome to the Stargate Fam Jen !! you now have 3 Series and a few movies to catch up on! AND there is talks and a good possibility of a new show in the works! I knew you would love this movie! Cant wait for you to meet Jack O'Neill : the one with two L's😉
Stargate is one of those awesome movies that isn't well enough recognized for it's awesomeness. :) Great Reactions, as always! TY for allowing us to follow you on this journey.
The "secret military installation" is played by Cheyenne Mountain Complex outside my hometoen of Colorado Springs home of NORAD and has an entire room called "Stargate Command" with props from SG1
7:55, this is awesome how they did this: they filmed a water tank, but with the camera tilted on its side, while the VFX artists dumped bricks or rocks as well as large quantities of Alka Seltzer to give it that foamy look. They used a little bit of CGI to remove the bricks.
Once again, i love your love of music! Too many people just gloss over the small parts of a soundtrack. I love that you relate to the nerd! There are more of us than them! Little things you say like "oooh quartz!" just make my day. The main charachter (James Spader) also played Ultron in the MCU. Now that's range!
I have been waiting for so long for someone to finally react to this movie! Great reaction, I enjoyed it very much. I've seen this movie when I was 11 or 12 and it did blow my mind. I think it is a significant contributor to why I got into and love sci-fi so much. Also, the series Stargate SG-1 started airing a few years later and it was one of the first sci-fi series I had access to and watched vigorously every Saturday afternoon. If you enjoyed the movie, I suggest you give a try to the series as well. It is essentially a continuation and expansion of this story and they have been reusing a lot of things from the movie, including the awesome score. I think you would like it.
Cheyenne Mountain, the base where the Stargate is, is the real-world location of NORAD the joint American/Canadian aerospace defense center for North America. In real life, they have a broom closet with the Stargate Command logo on it as a joke and nod to the series.
Fun review, as always! STARGATE still holds up as a superior science-fiction/adventure film. Thank you for presenting it in its original Panavision aspect ratio!
Very happy to see you check this one out! One of my favorite, and one of the best! It also opens you to the universe of Stargate, one of the coolest sci fi universes out there. I highly recommend that you check out the shows as well, starting with SG-1, then Atlantis, and finally Universe(as well as 2 more SG-1 movies. The Stargate series' are epic, awesome and badass, while also being fun, campy, tongue-in-cheek, and sometimes not afraid to poke fun at themselves. Even if you don't do it on your channel, I can't recommend enough that you check the show out for yourself! Another great reaction!
Stargate is probably my favorite Sci-Fi universe. I love how the evolution of SG-1 goes from STTOS campy to more complex stories, usually striking the perfect middle ground for me. This movie sets the perfect foundation that it built upon.
😭 Oh, Jen … This one film spawned a Gigantic Franchise & Fandom … Three shows - with a couple dozen plus seasons between them … Watching your first steps into it … 😭 Niagara Falls 😭 I can’t understand why? Maybe it’s because of current Hollywood 😢
- The main series was called Stargate SG-1, the SG-1 meaning "Stargate Team 1". After the success of the movie, the TV show was made using Jack O'Neill (now spelled O'Neil, they make a big deal of it! It's funny) and Daniel Jackson. O'Neil was played by Richard Dean Anderson and Daniel by Michael Shanks. Skaara (Alexis Cruz) made one or two appearances and was the only film cast member to do so. Everyone else was either not a part of it or recast (Kowalski was recast). The show lasted 10 years, with spin-offs like Stargate: Atlantis which co-starred Jason Mamoa, and Stargate: Universe. The theme for the film is also the theme of the series. - Other Emmerich movies to see: The Patriot with Mel Gibson, Anonymous (about the authorship of Shakespeare's plays), and Midway (about the definitive battle of Midway Island in WWII) are all really good! - Ra was played by Jaye Davidson, who made only one(?) other film, then retired from acting. The other film was The Crying Game directed by Neil Jordan and starring Stephen Rea (V For Vendetta, Interview With The Vampire) and Forest Whitaker. It was nominated for a slew of Oscars, including one for Davidson as Best Supporting Actor. It is a really good film with a "twist" that freaked everyone out! Stargate came out after The Crying Game.
Stargate SG-1 was indeed a TV show after this for 10 seasons. And a few seasons of Stargate Atlantis. And a few more of Stargate Universe. And an MMORPG that never made it to release but somehow is being played in a few other Universal movies. And a couple of episodes of Wormhole X-Treme.
3:55 The “mysterious benefactor lady” is played by Viveca Lindfors, a Swedish actress who appeared with Errol Flynn and Charlton Heston in the old days, but whom I always remember as the English professor in “The Sure Thing.”
Judging by your enthusiasm during the movie the whole premise / idea struck a chord with you and made for a good reaction. Movie turned out much better than I expected when I saw it way back in the 90's in the cinema....
I had SUCH a crush on Jaye Davidson after this - I caught up with "Crying Game" later. Everything I heard says he really didn't like the fame thing so he bailed on the movie career that might have happened and did other things. Stunning presence, I think. 😍 By the way, they'd be jackals not dogs, wouldn't they? Or wolves? Probably not dogs, though. Someone put her onto the 1996-ish "Arrival" with Charlie Sheen. It got pretty much erased by "Independence Day" when it was new but it's a hell of a lot of fun.
Love this movie! It's STAR WARS meets BEN HUR! Or Flash Gordon meets Lawrence Of Arabia! The movie is very popular, not only with Sci Fi fans, but also archaeologists who have always been interested with the idea of Ancient Aliens as well as the cultures of the past that worshipped them as gods.
One of my favourites watching one of my absolute favourites :) The series that came after is even better - I would go so far as to say that if pressed and I could only own one whole show on DVD it would be Stargate SG-1 ... and Atlantis :sneaked that in: :D
I loved Spader's everyman nerdy lecturer solves-it-in-a-day character so much. But especially the lady that hires him, Swedish actress, Viveca Lindfors, who was also in Rob Reiner's The Sure Thing as a prof. She just has such gravitas. I hope you do 2012, it's just so much awesome cheesiness 😂
Ok, earlier, when Ra's Jaffa in their Death Gliders ("Him-shiao" according to Skaara) were bombing the village you could hear them shouting "Rihu Nane!" Maybe that was part of it, but I get the meaning to be either "Ra is Victorious" or "Do not defy Ra". At times we hear Skaara shouting "Nane! Nane!" so it may simply mean "no" or imply negativity.. " At 30:42 Skaara is drawing with chalk on a slate, and when Daniel asks him what he's writing he says "Nena-khai", which in the subtitles reads "The day of our victory." In the next scene, after they bushwhack the Jaffa supervising their daily tasks Kasuf urges them all to kneel and pray to Ra for forgiveness, but then Daniel triggers the collapse button on their helmets and says "Yememaye naturu-ti! Yememaye!" (Take a look at your Gods! Take a good look!) Earlier in the film Sha'Uri (In the series she is renamed Sha'Re for easier pronunciation) shows Daniel how to pronounce the letters of their language. ("Nedjer-u" became "Naturu" and so on...". So it would seem to me that Abydan, which is supposed to be based on Tuareg or Berber or the language of the Old Kingdom of Kemet (their word for Egypt) is at least a semi-agglutinative language
This film lays the groundwork for one of favorite guilty pleasures: Stargate: SG-1, which itself ran for 10 seasons & 2 movies and was spun off into 2 shows: Stargate: Atlantis (which starred a pre-Aquaman Jason Momoa and a post-Firefly Jewel Staite) and Stargate Universe.
"A Serpent Guard, a Horus Guard and a Setesh Guard meet on a neutral planet. It is a tense moment. The Serpent Guard's eyes glow, the Horus Guard's beak glistens, the Setesh Guard's... nose drips."
So glad you liked this one. It was so fun to see you playing along to the music during the show! This one is very nostalgic for me, thanks for posting.
Woefully underrated film. And i never realized how much the main theme smacked of Raiders of the Lost Ark original score. This was some fun sci fi with actual sci in the fi.
Boy, Jen!!! That was so much fun. One of my favorite movies, and I was surprised you'd not done it yet. What a treat! "Stargate" spawned a TV series (in which Colonel O'Neil became Colonel O"Neill [with two "L"s] and was portrayed by Richard Dean Anderson). One of his requirements for doing the role was that he could inject his own personal style of comedic sarcasm...in other words...much less stiff. Ran for ten, yes ten, years, befores spawning two other sequels. The TV series was extremely entertaining and had atypically fantastic music. David Arnold really drew you into the movie, didn't he! Fabulous music. Well, ya know how you wouldn't expect a TV series to have music on that level, but it did. Get this...familiar with one of the best film composers of all time, Jerry Goldsmith? Welp, a very close study to him, his son, Joel Goldsmith did the music to the TV series. You're busy out the wazoo, so I don't know if you'd ever have time, but, I will tell you, if you ever decided to do a TV series, you'd really enjoy the TV series, "Stargate SG-1."
My favorite scene is when the Stargate opens for the first time, and everyone in the rooms mouths drop to the floor, and if you look at all the military guys, they barely flinch. They are trained to not show emotions, and they most certainly didn't, rock solid the whole time.
I love how the scientists are all looking on in wonder and awe while the military personnel all have grim faces. Two wonderful reactions to the grave implications of the stargate.
I know it's been said by other viewers, but here's my two cents...EXCELLENT choice of this movie. If you really want to get hooked, just watch the first episode of Stargate SG1, and you won't be able to stop.👍
Stargate (the movie) is effectively just the first episode of the Stargate SG-1 TV show. One of the greatest sci-fi shows of all-time. And SG-1 eventually spins off into Stargate Atlantis and eventually Stargate Universe. And Stargate Origins is a prequel miniseries. I HIGHLY recommend you watch Stargate SG-1. You will LOVE it. Everyone always reacts to the movie and than fails to watch the series. :/
My son LOVES this soundtrack. I have NO idea how he found it, but he did. He didn't see the movie until I asked him about how he heard the OST. He was more interested in the music than the movie.
The key to why Independence Day and Stargate were so good is probably Emmerech’s collaboration with Dean Devlin. I never thought he did as well on his own. They also did a Godzilla movie together after those two, which was not well received, and that seems to be when they quit working together.

This is a great movie , I love the acting of Kurt Russell and James Spaces in this movie and stargate effects are awesome to this day and tv show is called star gate sg-1 which takes place after the movie with few characters from the movie. It expands on the lore that the movie touches on
Hee hee James Spaces. 😅
@@jean-paulaudette9246 got to love autocorrect
Yes, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe were all shows and movies based on this film.
Ahh the Stargate movie, the gateway drug to Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe
Kurt Russell's crew cut is one of this movie's greatest FX. It's so laser sharp, it could shave delicatessen meat.
Kurt Russell legit never looked better, in any role, before or since! That's how great his haircut in this flick was!! lol
Solder he had the same cut
@@samellowery True but it still looks the best in this movie. In fact, IMO he looks his best in this movie out of his entire filmography. And I love the guy as an actor so I don't mean anything bad by it.
He is O'Neil (1 L) :D
@@jacob4920sorry but nothing is better than jack Burton.
Another great Kurt Russell movie to watch is Soldier. Another Sci Fi classic.
6:04, This scene surprised me, as Jackson learns that the symbols on the Cover Stones are actually star constellations.
21:22 "No one's cooler than Kurt Russell. That's for sure." Jen. Truer word have never been spoken.
I think you are going to love the television show. It is just as epic. I hope you take the journey and I hope you share it with us.
And Raymond Reddington on The Blacklist, for 10 seasons.
"Well that's not how we left it!"
Okay I legit LOL'd. 😂
Ra’s pyramid ship is probably my absolute favorite starship design.
The tv show and the spin-offs are definitely worth watching
I loved this movie when it came out and I knew you would love it also!
10:56, when audience members saw that scene, they were cheering! Dean Devlin revealed this in the DVD commentary.
So happy to see you react to this movie... You have to watch SG-1 now!!
Stargate SG-1, which is based on this movie, is the very best show of all times. Closely followed by Stargate-Atlantis
Jen has such a lovely voice for choral vocalizations. 👍😊
Used to be, not since 2008.
I didn't know :) Thanks, Rob.
Fun review, as always! STARGATE still holds up as a superior science-fiction/adventure film. Thank you for presenting it in its original Panavision aspect ratio!
Alright!! My favorite sci-fi franchise!!
The actor French Stewart who played Harry in 3rd Rock from the Sun played one of the soldiers in this movie.
Now you need to watch Stargate SG-1
7:55 that never gets old
So true :D So true :D
Stargate is probably my favorite Sci-Fi universe. I love how the evolution of SG-1 goes from STTOS campy to more complex stories, usually striking the perfect middle ground for me. This movie sets the perfect foundation that it built upon.
😭 Oh, Jen …
This one film spawned a Gigantic Franchise & Fandom … Three shows - with a couple dozen plus seasons between them …
Watching your first steps into it …
😭 Niagara Falls 😭
I can’t understand why?
Cruz was not the only actor to play the same character in the series. The father Kasuf was also played by Erick Avari in both
RDA'S O'Neill is the one with two L's - kurt russell only has one L
@Alteran It’s been so long since I last watched the show that I forgot about that!
@@stevendubin3584 I knew it was one way or the other! LOL
According to Alexis Cruz, the actors playing the Abodozians actually learned ancient Egyptian for the movie.
Judging by your enthusiasm during the movie the whole premise / idea struck a chord with you and made for a good reaction. Movie turned out much better than I expected when I saw it way back in the 90's in the cinema....
I highly highly recommend Dark City, I bet you'd love it
I had SUCH a crush on Jaye Davidson after this - I caught up with "Crying Game" later. Everything I heard says he really didn't like the fame thing so he bailed on the movie career that might have happened and did other things. Stunning presence, I think. 😍
By the way, they'd be jackals not dogs, wouldn't they?
Gordon's alive ! ( hey shaine )
@@shanenolan5625 He's actually been in Stargate as a fun character. Hard to recognize him.
@@mr44mag oh I didn't know that . Thanks.
I saw this for the first time as an Egyptian mythology and space loving kid and yeah it did in fact blow my mind
One of my favourites watching one of my absolute favourites :) The series that came after is even better - I would go so far as to say that if pressed and I could only own one whole show on DVD it would be Stargate SG-1 ... and Atlantis :sneaked that in: :D
Jen had such a genuinely excited reaction to Stargate, something I was so excited about when I was 12 and on through the TV series
At 30:42 Skaara is drawing with chalk on a slate, and when Daniel asks him what he's writing he says "Nena-khai", which in the subtitles reads "The day of our victory." In the next scene, after they bushwhack the Jaffa supervising their daily tasks Kasuf urges them all to kneel and pray to Ra for forgiveness, but then Daniel triggers the collapse button on their helmets and says "Yememaye naturu-ti!
IF you like this you should start watching Stargate SG-1 its amazing and one of the best Sci fi TV shows ever made.
Here Comes Jen again, ruler of the world as I always call her. As usual you do a great job and this is a pretty darn good movie
Yes!!!! The Day After Tomorrow and 2012 are Roland Emmerich and are thrill rides.
You'll love them.
Crushing on Kurt Russell..I can watch Tombstone and never get tired of it.💜
I for one appreciate that the reaction to seeing Richard Kind is thinking "Oh, look, it's Mark".
You want more of this you should watch the TV series adaptation of it Stargate SG-1 and it's spinoffs Stargate Atlantis & Stargate Universe.
This is a good introduction. I love that you recognized the dude from made about you. I loved that show. He also did a voice in a bugs life. 🐛
"A Serpent Guard, a Horus Guard and a Setesh Guard meet on a neutral planet. It is a tense moment. The Serpent Guard's eyes glow, the Horus Guard's beak glistens, the Setesh Guard's... nose drips."
I just heard voice of Chris Judge :D
i wonder if jaffa have knock knock jokes too?
So glad you liked this one. It was so fun to see you playing along to the music during the show! This one is very nostalgic for me, thanks for posting.
Stargate Sg-1 is the name of the tv show. It's fantastic, humourous and cheesy and practical effects. Glad you enjoyed the movie!
2 L's
cheesy?
SG1, SGA and SGU are a must.
I love STARGATE. Great reaction!
I grew up on Stargate and the TV series Stargate SG-1 & Stargate Atlantis with the movies that came after. Enjoyed them all.
love this movie.... and the series :)
Thank you for reacting to one of my favourite movies. It clearly went under the radar here on youtube.👌
I know it's been said by other viewers, but here's my two cents...EXCELLENT choice of this movie. If you really want to get hooked, just watch the first episode of Stargate SG1, and you won't be able to stop.👍
17:40 Sandstorm party. 😆
Love this film. Very cool.
Thanks, Jen! Love this movie ... You made my Thursday! David Arnold score is magnificent! Movie lead to the TV Series and hopefully more movies!
Michael Shanks absolutely NAILS the character of Daniel Jackson in ‘Stargate: SG1’
The Day After Tomorrow is worth a watch.
I’m so glad someone finally reacted to this fantastic movie. Thanks Jen! ❤️
Hi Jen hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Thanks John you too 👍
Stargate (the movie) is effectively just the first episode of the Stargate SG-1 TV show.
If you like this, Stargate SG-1 is a very good follow-up TV series based upon this movie.
Very enjoyable watching you have so much fun with this. 🙂
The stargate universe has my favorite sci-fi villains. A perfect mix of terrifying and cheesy.
They also did a Godzilla movie together after those two, which was not well received, and that seems to be when they quit working together.
lol, you got me laughing already in the credits. The rhythm lives on.
