You can definitely tell how much more control Tim Burton had on this movie than the previous film. The previous film had a mix of Tim Burton's visual flair and Batman combined, but this movie feels solely like a Tim Burton movie

I saw this as a 4-year-old at a drive-in. I will always remember sitting on top of my parents' car watching this movie and being scared to death, but I loved it. I had all the toys and got it on VHS for that Christmas. It's weird bc my folks were very protective of what I watched as a kid. Somehow this and 89 slipped under their radar.

This was one of my favourite movies as a kid! Rewatching it always reminds me how damn dark it is and I think it’s crazy I was watching this movie when I was 3 or 4 years old. Still has some of my favourite scenes of Keaton’s Batman and the batmobile, his suit looks ten times better than in 89 imo. It’s definitely ridiculous and completely over the top but I can’t help but love it.

Movie World on the Gold Coast here in Australia had a Batman Returns ride in the 90s which was absolutely amazing. You walked through a full scale Wayne Manor and Batcave, then jumped into a Batmobile simulator and fought the penguin. It was next level. And for that reason and that reason alone I will always love this movie!

Batman Returns is my favorite Batman movie. It is cartoony - a twisted, sexy, campy, gut-wrenching, live-action cartoon. I love the way this movie looks and sounds (A+ score by Elfman), Pfieffer and Devito are amazing in their roles, and the final scene in the alley is the best ending to any comic book movie ever. I totally get Kristian's complaints, but BR is so damn fun and atmospheric.

Third behind Begins and The Dark Knight for me and I revisit once or twice a year now. I absolutely adore the production design and overall vibe of it. I like my Batmen crazy, horny, and emo and no movie has done that better since. By far my favourite of the original Batman movies. It works for me whereas Batman 89 doesn't entirely anymore. It is much more Tim Burton, which is a good thing (for me at least). And it just has a better emotional pay off. Keaton was clearly more comfortable in the role this time around and Michelle Pheifer's Catwoman is still one of the best comic book movie villains.

Honestly, Batman Forever was probably my first Batman movie. That or Mask of the Phantasm. I have more to say about those two later. But Returns holds such a special place in my heart. Whether it's the fact that I had the action figures, this movie recorded on VHS, or that it was so strongly associated with the Animated series, I've always been a fan. Plus this movie and Batman 89 were my introduction to Tim Burton (at least, I don't remember seeing Beetlejuice first. The cartoon maybe...) So that is a big factor. The cast, the Gotham sets, the music, all of it just captures what I loved about the comics. Gotham somehow got progressively cleaner in the Nolan trilogy. Bale seemed slower than Keaton. I LOVE The Dark Knight, but over time I just gravitate towards these older films more. Thanks for all the rewatches. I love this series. Also, if any of you can give your opinions on the Fan Scriptions on Channel Awesome (mainly the Batman stuff, but any of it really) that would be awesome. Those videos are kind of long, but they are covering so much that you guys on this channel are talking about right now (Spider-Man, Batman, Rocky).

Another great REWATCH!, fellas. Winston was killing me again with the impressions! ("Just the p***y I've been looking for!") 🤣🤣🤣 I pretty much align with Coy on this one, and the Pfeiffer Catwoman art in his background was a nice touch! Kristian, I'm sorry you didn't care for it, and that's okay, but I will say I always viewed Penguin's plan as a manipulation/blackmailing of Max Shreck just to give himself some legitimacy in Gotham City and create a false sense of trust in citizens regarding his emergence. I think Penguin was bitter and planning the first-born slaughter all along. As Batman says, "I think he knows who his parents are. There's something else." Penguin put on a show to manipulate the sympathy of Gothamites too... from the publicity stunt of the cemetery scene to the admission of "I've played this stinking city like a harp from Hell!" Shreck, however, distracts Penguin from the plan by seducing him with the allure of power and yes, "unlimited p***tang" until throwing him under the bus. Only then does Penguin get back to what he intended all along... mass murder of first-born blue bloods. Anyway, I was a kid when I saw this movie, and I watch it at least once a year, and I still love it. Keep up the good work, gents. I'm looking forward to the next one!

This movie mostly stuck with me because of the NES or SNES videogame. It was SUPER hard and we played this forever. I didn't even remember the weird clowns and all those other illustrious characters from the movie, but I still see them before my mental eye when I think back to the videogame (they were very hard to beat).
So I did see this movie as a kid and I remember how enthralled I was with Catwoman and for a long time, I thought this was the better Batman movie (without seeing it over and over again; just my initial idea after seeing it for the first time). But watching it back, I thought that the first Batman was better as it was more grounded than the cartoony and weirder stuff that happens in this movie.
Oh, and all the toys, etc.. I remember asking for a LOT of them. ^^

Ask I got older there is no doubt that the Tim Burton ones are better I still love everything about them and the Joker has always been my favorite. I still watch these movies every year and still love all of them

Schumacher wasn't the first director to draw inspiration from Batman 66. Tim Burton did it first. In Batman 89, Joker ruining paintings in the museum was from an episode of Batman 66. So was the Penguin running for mayor storyline from Batman Returns. Burton even uses the dutch tilt a few times in the 89 film. That show was so important to Batman, it's presence still felt all throughout those first four Batman films.

Hindsight is 20/20 though. If this movie doesn't happen like this, the studio doesn't think going cheesy and cornier is needed. Because Batman and Robin almost tanked Batman in general, it was put on the shelf until finally in comes Nolan.

I've read the original script for this film (it's online), and while Penguin and Catwoman were underdeveloped in it, I liked it and felt it had a clear and focused story. The only similarities are the Christmas setting, Penguin and Catwoman as villains, the plot point of Batman being framed for murder, and the moment Batman's cape turns into a glider. Everything else was different as the plot was about Penguin and Catwoman looking for hidden treasure, Batman was the focus instead of Penguin, Penguin was not deformed but a short man called Mr. Bonaface, Vicki Vale returns, Robin appears, Gordon has a lot more to do, Harvey Bullock appears but is called Eddie, the final battle is in Wayne Manor and the Batcave, and Bruce proposes to Vicki at the end

I really don't like this Penguin (much prefer the mob boss interpretation), but I kinda love this Catwoman (although the random mystical alley cat bs is terrible). The Batman/Catwoman relationship is great, and last i remember seeing it, I wanted more of her and much less of Penguin. It's been so long, so I definitely don't remember it as vividly as Batman '89, so I really need to see this again. Regardless of our opinions on this movie, I think we all owe the Burton films a debt of gratitude for the existence of Batman: The Animated Series.

  • @tornadochaser2457

Even though this film is sheer fantasy nonsense, the penguins being led somewhere by a signal frequency makes sense - Animals have a frequency signal that calls them to places, it's used for bats by Batman in Batman Begins.
Kristian, out of the four original Batman movies, this one actually has the highest score on Rotten Tomatoes (80%), only with critics though, not with the audience score (73%), Batman 1989 has the highest audience score (84%), its critics' score is 71%.
The Penguin was first seen writing lists in The Hall of Records, and he was writing down a list of the first born children of Gotham. When he's rejected by the townspeople after his botched speech, and goes back to his lair, he yells, "Where are the lists?! Bring me the names!". His plan was only to do this, but Max Shreck convinces him to run for mayor for the power benefits it will bring him, and to "reclaim the birth-right his parents carelessly disregarded". Plus, Max said being in that position could bring him "unlimited poontang!". Max wanted someone corrupt in office, to get away with nefarious powerplant plans and whatever other bad things he could plan to execute. This is where we see what Osward could've become - A respected, remarkable citizen that overcame his unfair disadvantages and difficulties, instead of letting them drive him to become embittered and cruel. The Penguin loves the love and adoration he receives from the townspeople, gladly telling others to call him "Oswald Cobblepot!" instead of The Penguin when he's embraced, but then angrily goes back to declaring that he's "Penguin! Who's not a human being, but an animal! Cold-blooded!" after he's justifiably rejected. The Penguin's funeral at the end is a sad one, as the penguins did their best to raise him, and did so with love and care, but nonetheless, raised a hate-filled monster, as opposed to the respectable, remarkable person he could've become.
Selina Kyle is dealing with the liberation of her ego and anger after being mistreated by Max Schreck. The attempted murder is the straw that breaks the camel's back in this situation, and her destroying her apartment displays her ridding herself of her old life, to start an empowered one. She's finding herself with her ego in the film, and her task is to figure out whether she can cultivate a healthy ego or go over the line, regarding killing Max Shreck, something Bruce tries to prevent her from doing.
You seemed a bit unclear on what the film was doing in this video, so I just wanted to make all of it clear.
I understand that you hate what this film's doing Kristian, but I don't understand why you're incredibly taken aback by its nonsensical, fantasy storytelling, considering its aesthetic. This isn't real-life Chicago like in the Nolan Batman movies, this is a film clearly displaying right from the start, that it's a gothic fairytale. The sets are stylised and surreal, the music is otherworldly and operatic, the whole film treats itself as if it's a surreal dream, completely unshackled and free of realistic boundaries, and to me, it's part of its charm. I get it if you don't think that style and take works, but I don't understand why you think the film is ignorant of how utterly nonsensical its content is.
Some background info on this film - Tim Burton wasn't all that interested in coming back to do a sequel, it was WB executives who desperately wanted him back due to the first film's success. They managed to convince him to come back by giving him free reign to do whatever he wanted, and literally told him he can make "a Tim Burton movie". I've never heard of Tim Burton telling McDonald's to leave him alone and let him do his thing, as Coy implied. Tim Burton said after the movie was released, "I think I upset McDonald's. They once told him, "What's that black stuff coming out of The Penguin's mouth?! We can't sell Happy Meals with that". I think McDonald's just assumed things would be fine due to a Batman property presumably being kid-friendly, but unlike the first one, there was a parental backlash due to the sexual references and many saying this one is too dark.
Personally, I love the film, and think it's very good, not great though. I would love to see two series sprung from the 1989 film - A traditional comic adaptation like the first, and this twisted, quirky gothic fairytale series.
It can be presumed that not everyone from the circus that closed down joined The Penguin living underground, and I think The Red Triangle Gang works completely in the film, as this movie in particular, is full of visual flair, and they add to that nicely. Unlike in the first film, Batman does kill, but only when he deems it necessary to do so. By the way, when Bruce was doing research on his computer, the circus closed down due to there being "reports of missing children", so The Penguin had already, secretly been killing children, which I think is a flaw in the film, as I feel it's definitely too dark, and undermines the character arc the Penguin has regarding his potential to be a respectable, remarkable, beloved citizen, which he throws away too, as he absolutely threw that away many years ago.

It's nice to hear Kristian just straight up hate on a movie. Cracks me up so much that he didn't even have this much vitriol for TLJ🤣 I feel the same way about Zack Snyder's comic movies and The Rise of Skywalker: just plain stupid, terrible movies that aren't even entertaining. As far as Batman Returns goes, i loved it when it first came out (i was a teenager so i thought it was sooo dark and edgy lol) but, while i don't hate it, it is not great. Still, it's 100% more enjoyable than BvS. Pfeiffer is really good and so beautiful. The chemistry between her and Keaton is palpable.
