    I love that Joel Schumacher can make one of my favorite films Falling Down (Michael Douglas) and then a movie that’s super fun terrible and wacky like this. I think you’re quite the filmmaker if you can do both of those

    Winston is dead wrong. Batman: The Movie (1966) has way better puns and one liners than this. That one is actually really funny.
    And just because this movie attempts at being fun does not make it so, like how I'm seeing from a lot of the comment section. The thing i do like are the statues as tall as skyscrapers. That's pretty cool design. The score isn't that bad either. Quite catchy in a good way actually.

      The Batman (1966) tv show and movie were really terrific. It was intended to be saterical and outrageous. Both the show and the movie are good family fun, kinda like how "The Lego Batman Movie" is for today's generation. Basically, the people behind the scenes were in on the joke, but took it sincerely.

  • @MindofMike35
    @MindofMike35 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This movie is undeniably terrible but it holds a special place in my heart for a few reasons.
    1. I was a child... It was my first time seeing batman on the big screen. ( Yes, I've seen the Michael Keaton one's but not until after the fact.)
    2. Arnold was just campy, cheesy, cartoony goodness.
    3. Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl was my sexual awakening.
    (How I knew I was attracted to older women, even at that young of an age 🤣)

  • @ryancraig6675

    I was obsessed with this movie when I was 9, but then I rewatched when I was 13 and not only did I realize how bad it was, I realized how much it ruined Mr. Freeze for me subconsciously ( though I glad it's gotten to a point where people have become vocal about giving him a second chance on film). I tried to enjoy it ironically and it is still THE most mind numbing film I've ever watched. And I've seen all the Transformers films from Michael Bay.

    Remember this is last Batman movie Bob Kane saw in his lifetime . Just Sad. I don't put all the blame on Schmacher for this mess . WB Execs and Akiva Goldsman have to take some responsibility fpr this mess . The sad thing about Arnie's Mr Freeze is they used the basic premise of Mr Freeze's story arc from 'Heart of Ice' one of the best episodes of Batman: The Animated Series and completely butchered it. The small scenes between Bruce and Alfred are probably the best in the moviw and along with the score are probably the only features of the movie that are not completely terrible. I pity Elliot Goldenthal having to score this and he did the best he could with pretty attrocious material . The score appropriately captures the 66 Batman vibe at least.

  • @TheSt1092
    @TheSt1092 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I watched this with Joel Schumacher's commentary and I get the impression that Joel really in his heart would have preferred to make something a bit darker with Batman but didn't feel he could say no to whatever the studio wanted after Batman Forever. A bit like Raimi plugging away with Spider-Man 3 and putting Venom just to please Avi Arad despite not liking the character . Batman and Robin suffered because the put merchandising and toys ahead movie quality. The props, vehicle designers and VFX guys must have been worn out such was the number of ' toys' thar needed to produce. Movie quality should never be sacrificed for merchandising . Nolan made it very clear when took over Batman the film must come first . For me the only redeeming qualities of this movie are the couple pf one to one Interactions between Bruce and Alfred and Elliot Goldenthal's score which does suit the campy but limited material rather well . This movie is probably playing in Comic Book movie hell along with rubbish Green Lantern , Superman IV, all the Fantastic Four movies , TASM 2 ( sorry Andrew) , Daredevil (2003) and it's spin off Elecktra , X Men Origins: Wolverine , Dark Phoenix and the theatrical cut of Justice League.

      @@TheKristianHarloff BTW Kristian did you know that Andrew Adamson who would direct the first two Shrek and Narnia movies worked the visual effects for Batman Forever and Batman and Robin working alongside John Dykstra who worked on and won an Oscar for his work on the original Star Wars and later won Oscar for his work on Spider-Man 2 . Some of the thing they tried with the computer effects were ambitious for the time but you can tell at the time this movie came out this computer technology was still not perfected yet.

    I actually enjoyed Batman Forever more than I remembered, but Batman and Robin was painful to get through. It takes the silliness from Forever, turns it up to 11 and removes any substance. There’s not much of a story to follow, and there aren’t any real characters in the movie, just hollow caricatures. I’m also pretty sure 80% or more of Arnold’s dialogue is ice puns. At least I have a new answer if a professor asks why I’m late to class. #iwishiknew

    I will say this about Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. I saw B&R when I was like 3-4 years old in the theater. Oddly enough, I thought Mr. Freeze was scary. These movies aren't good, but Warner Brothers totally succeeded in making them marketable for kids and sell toys and other merchandise. My brother and I had the toys from both movies. So, from a business perspective, WB was successful. They just failed on other levels. Also, I preferred George Clooney to Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne/Batman, but that's just my preference.

    This movie is the equivalent to the same feeling I experienced when watching the Undertakers Streak come to an end. Yeah not every match was a classic but most were so yeah Batman Forever wasn’t great but a Batman movie is always something to look forward to just like the streak match was always something to look forward to at every Wrestlemania. Well this franchise got F-5’d 3 times and it took 8 years to recover. The Undertaker said he had a concussion at the beginning of his match against Lesnar and doesn’t remember anything about the streak ending match. Well I wish back in 1997 I would tripped when walking into the theater and would of been concussed to where I would have no recollection of ever seeing that 💩 terpiece of a movie.

    To be fair, I saw this in theaters when I was 5 years old. I thought it was awesome. Again, as a FIVE year old i thought this was great. It was still a big budget production. The issue is that they went all-in on the campy cartoony vibe. Which is fine for a small child, but as an adult its too silly. but it still has some production elements worthy of praise.

    You need to watch the behind the scenes to this movie. The whole cast and crew admitted in interviews that the movie was a failure. Chris O'Donnell said he never shot a single scenes with Arnold, since he was barely in the suit (only in closeups), due to the suit being so heavy. George Clooney still continues to make fun of his involvement in this, and Joel Schumacher publicly apologized and took the blame on himself for how this turned out. Warner Bros made sure that all the toys were designed and ready before the film even went into production.

Granted, I liked the casting and it somehow manages to not be boring, but that's not saying much. You also pointed out an inconsistency with Poison Ivy I hadn't noticed before in that she was on board with Mr. Freeze's plan to freeze the whole planet which would kill off all plant life too. She's supposed to be all about the plants, so that didn't make sense. I simply cannot understand what the hell was going through WB executives' heads with this film. I was about to turn 26 when this came out. This is definitely the worst movie I went to the theater to see as an adult. In defense of Uma Thurman, her Poison Ivy accent seemed like it was based off of the Animated Series portrayal. Still didn't save the movie

    Regardless of the outcome of this live action cartoon part of me always wanted to see shelved Batman Unchained/Triumphant. They were going to take Batman back to his roots to the “darker” tone w/ Scarecrow, Bruce hallucinating seeing The Joker, and Harley (as Joker’s daughter).

    I noticed the huge flaw that is vast persons aren’t recognizing Batman is Bruce Wayne because he never modified his voice so it’s implausible that vast persons that have heard Bruce Wayne fail to recognize Batman is Bruce Wayne when Batman talked at a party.

    They were even mailing it in with the toys at the end. Batman has a modified batmobile. Batgirl has a generic crotch rocket bike, and Robin has a combination of a snowmobile and one of those shallow bottom boats with the big fan on the back from the bayou? Where did he get that?

    This movie is ABYSMAL. But I’ll always defend George Clooney as Batman. If people can love Adam West, then I believe Clooney deserves love too. He was a good Batman in a terrible kids movie. If you think about it, he checks all the boxes as Batman. He’s smart. He can fight. He does detective work. He solves problems. He doesn’t kill. And he’s over protective of Robin. Sure his head bobbles quite a bit here lol but his scenes with Alfred are really good stuff and almost an entirely different movie. The movie is mostly unwatchable but it’s worth skipping through it to see Bruce tell Alfred that he loves him. I wish Clooney were younger. He looks way more like a Bruce Wayne than Pattinson ever will. We’ve seen Clooney do great work. I can imagine him in the The Batman trailers. If we’re going to find someone to hate for how bad Batman and Robin is, let’s hate the studio, not Clooney, the bright knight 2.0.

    I just want a Bane that is not a minion, in the comics is way smarter than most of batman's villains and in the movies is always manipulated by someone else. There is a world where Bane could be controlling Ivy and Freeze to work for him having complete opposite goals by sheer intelligence

    First of all, Kristian's Ahnold is FLAWLESS. Even the manic look in his eyes is a perfect part of the impersonation. Yes, agreed that this movie is truly terrible and i think the real sin of it is because, unlike the Adam West series, this movie doesn't even feel like the actors are enjoying themselves. The camp of '66 is still fun to watch today and i daresay Mr Freeze in the original series was a good villain even though that was long before the more relatable wife-is-frozen backstory that began in TAS. And as painful as this movie is to watch--and i never will again--i honestly don't think this Bane is any less comic accurate than Nolan's version. I hope we finally get a real Bane in the Matt Reeves verse. This movie is so bad, it almost makes me want to watch a Snyder comic movie...almost. BvS and ZSJL are almost Batman and Robin awful.
