Off Grid HOUSEBOAT CAMPING: Slow Living Beached Life

  • In this week’s Deep Houseboat Life video, we’ll share a bit more about liveaboard life with you through our first houseboat camping experience as a family! When we say, “houseboat camping,” we don’t mean camping in a tent on a beach or island. We also don’t mean camping in a tent on our actual houseboat. Houseboat camping, to us, is sleeping off grid on a houseboat while it’s beached and tied to trees on shore.
    Sleeping on an off-grid houseboat while beached is something that Trey has done since growing up boating on his houseboat on Lake Lanier, and has so many wonderful boat camping memories and gone on many houseboat adventures! This was Jessie, Clare, and Dory’s first time off-grid houseboat camping on Lake Lanier, and it was a truly magical experience. We even managed to find a fairly secluded beach to ourselves for a few days on the northern part of Lake Lanier that really allowed us to embrace the slow living lifestyle.
    Come along with us on our Lake Lanier houseboat camping trip, and we’ll show you what it’s like leaving the dock and marina on our part time liveaboard houseboat, finding a beach for the weekend to houseboat camp, beaching a houseboat and tying up to shore, and spending time as a family enjoying simple living for a few days. We’ll even share how off grid living on our beached houseboat is possible while away from our marina...off the grid!

      You need a reverse osmosis water purifier for during those generator runs. Then you have zero fresh water problems.

    • @DeepHouseboatLife
      @DeepHouseboatLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TennesseeHomesteadUSA Thank you for the comment. We have a water filter at the dock and only fill our tanks with fresh filtered water. Taking water from the lake isn’t something our boat is a capable of doing.

      @@DeepHouseboatLife With reverse osmosis you can draw water from anywhere. Is your dock near the Yacht Club Road marina ?

    • @DeepHouseboatLife
      @DeepHouseboatLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TennesseeHomesteadUSA This is a very interesting concept - not something we have considered doing just yet because we're never away from our marina for more than a handful of days at a time. This could be very helpful for houseboaters who go long distances on a river over the course of several weeks. Definitely piquing our interest, though!

      That’s awesome! We’re hoping to make “boat camping” a more regular thing for our family, too. Think we just tipped our toes in the water that weekend, and can’t wait to do more of it. It reminded us both of the sailing trips we’ve gone on in the Caribbean where it feels like an adventure with nature.

      Thank you for watching and subscribing!! We have thought about solar, and even briefly looked at solar as on option for off grid camping. Would love to do it, if we can figure out a way to safely make it happen for our boat. Our houseboat was built in 2002, and adding what we'd need to power the appliances we'd want would require us to do more drilling and moving electrical parts than we are comfortable with right now. If we are ever fortunate enough to build our dream houseboat, we would want solar on top of the party top and a big battery bank in the hull (hey, a guy can dream haha). We do need to get our inverter batteries replaced, so check back sometime to see how we tackle this project...we don't even know how we are going to do that yet :)

    An excellent and informative video. You guys have an idyllic lifestyle, and being able to just get away from city life for such a wonderful experience is a joy to watch. I loved how you went through the prep for leaving the dock, and reminding people of the need to have the blowers going so there are no fumes in the engine bay before stating the engines, checking batteries on the carbon monoxide alarms, and closing the trips on the shore power before removing the power lines shows you have this stuff down pat. It is very annoying to see people just jump on a boat and take off, without having a sensible start up procedure (just a personal gripe :-)
    I look forward to seeing more of your content.

Looking forward to seeing more houseboat videos from Megan this summer. Even though I've been houseboating since I was a kid, I'm still learning a lot from other houseboaters as an adult. It's fun for my wife, Jessie, to learn everything, too. When we were saving up for our houseboat, we were never really sure we would get there. Drop anchor as you approach the beach. Set the anchor and then let line pay out as you beach. You can then tie off the bow to trees and tighten the line to the anchor at the rear. You are then secured at the bow and stern. This is sometimes done at sea with a kedge anchor. You can also tie off the bow and then use a tender to carry the anchor out away from the stern and achieve the same result. Happy boating.

    • @DeepHouseboatLife
      @DeepHouseboatLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a great tip and I think it would work, and really appreciate you sharing this knowledge. We unfortunately do not have a windlass, or winch, to pick up an anchor. The lake we are on covered up a forest in the 1950's and there are so many dead trees and logs that once we drop anchor, it might be next to impossible to get up... even with a windlass. We don't have a tender or jetski to move the anchor. Though, when we do potentially get one in the future, we will give this a try! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, and I hope you have a great weekend!!

    I've a little 28' houseboat on a trailer, kept at the house under a carport - to own/use/maintain I wouldn't trade it for any boat.
    I have a hand winch mounted at each rear corner of the boat - like what you find on boat trailers.
    Line runs to the front of the boat, 'around a cleat, then back to the rear again where it's hooked to another cleat.
    When I beach I unhook the line, 'get on shore and pull the end of the line in then find a place to drive in a stake or tree to tie to.
    Then winch up the slack. I can do this with a beer in my hand, but I've practiced for a few years

    So, do you live on the boat full time? I've been thinking of getting a house boat and living on the water. No grass to cut, no property taxes. Solar Panels, and inverters is a good back up for power. My only concern is dock fees.

      @DeepHouseboatLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for watching our video! We do not live on the houseboat full time, but we are up here about 10-15 days a month. We have several dock neighbors that live on their boat full time and absolutely love it. Honestly if it was just Jessie and me, I would strongly consider full time boat life. In Georgia, we still have property taxes for our houseboat, but dock fees can get steep, which is kind of a trade off. Slip fees are really determined by if your slip is covered or not, and how long and wide the slip is. Based on the back of the napkin math, the dock fees + houseboat property taxes vs. home property taxes basically come out in the wash. You may be able to make up the difference with utilities usually being cheaper on a houseboat. If you are thinking of living full time on a houseboat, I would support it! Life is about the journey and not always the destination!!! Hope to see you on the water soon.

    Is a solar power that would work perfect

    • @DeepHouseboatLife
      @DeepHouseboatLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey John! Thank you for watching and commenting. We are looking at getting a new inverter and one of the criteria we have is making sure it can charge from a a solar panel. It would be great to be off grid for longer and not have to run the generator as much! Solar is on the list of ideas and hopefully project we can tackle soon. Have a great day and hope to see you back here soon!

    Why don't you have solar power on the boat?

    • @DeepHouseboatLife
      @DeepHouseboatLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Peter! Thank you for watching. We are looking at solar panels but right now we can’t justify the cost. We only leave the dock a few times a year (lake is above full pool), which limits our boat camping spots. We would utilize solar to the fullest extent if we left the dock more. It would be a great addition to the boat if we can find a solid battery bank, inverter and solar system.
      Are you using solar at your home or in your boat?

    Hey guys how much for dock fee

    • @DeepHouseboatLife
      @DeepHouseboatLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems to vary by marina where we are, and has increased a little bit each year we've had our houseboat. Right now our slip fee at our marina is less than $1k per month. There are less expensive slips, and also more expensive sips, in our marina for houseboats. It depends a lot on whether or not you're under a covered slip, have an unobstructed view of the lake, and the types of amenities provided by the marina. Thank you for watching our video, Chuck! We appreciate having you here 😃

    How much does it cost to rent something like that for 2 or 3 weeks?

    • @DeepHouseboatLife
      @DeepHouseboatLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Phillip! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Renting houseboats is not something we know much about. There are a few houseboats on AirBNB that we have seen on our lake that are roughly $250/night. If you can find one, I bet you can get a deal for renting it for several weeks instead of days.
      What lakes are you looking to rent a houseboat? We hear Lake Powell in Utah is a huge houseboat rental lake.

      I went once on a 72’ houseboat with 11 women. On Lake Cumberland KY/TN I believe it was. It’s more expensive out West on lakes Powell, Meade vs Dell Hollow, Cumberland and many others. It also depends how big houseboat you want. Ours about 15 yrs ago was around $3,000 for 5 days 4 nights. Dividing up the price helps a lot between all on the boat. I priced lakes out west and it’s up to $6,000 to $10,000 for a week for large houseboat. Everyplace is different though. Go online and price them

    • @DeepHouseboatLife
      @DeepHouseboatLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Robert - thanks for watching our video! We actually don't have a tender/smaller boat just yet. We'd like to eventually get one, but just use our houseboat to get around the lake right now. Kinda strange that our houseboat is our "runabout" boat ha. Lots of folks in our marina do have a second, smaller boat that they use to make quick, short trips around the lake instead of moving their houseboat.

      Thank you for your sentiment, E Paul! Seems we're on the same wave length. It's funny, we've been part of other communities that are very niche and also have high learning curves (triathlon and running). There are people in those communities, too, that will say "oh, you have to get this gear, use these words, train this way, etc. or you're doing it wrong." It's usually meant to be helpful, but sometimes it's meant to make people feel less than. And yet we all still cross the same finish line. We're of the mindset that we aim to be more precise, never perfect, where it matters to us (the brass tax), and the small stuff just comes out in the wash (doesn't matter). At the end of the day, houseboating is meant to be enjoyed, and that is where we focus. Thanks for watching our videos and for your support!! Hope all is well in Florida.
