Let’s Make Fantastic Leather Tags

- In this video I’ll demonstrate how to create a “leather” bag tag you can make at home in under an hour!
These tags are suitable for use on external bags, wallets, backpacks, and more. We’ll create them using household devices and simple materials:
FOR THE BASIC VERSION YOU’LL NEED:
A software program such as Microsoft Publisher, Word, etc. (or equivalent for Mac) to create your logo and cutting guides.
An inkjet printer (with toner)
A sheet of standard paper
Masking tape
Faux Suede sheets from Cricut (available at all major craft stores and online through Amazon or Cricut)
Clear spray paint (satin or matte finish)
Exacto knife or rotary cutter
Ruler or straightedge
AN EASY WAY TO CREATE PRINTABLE LABELS: • Let's Use Avery Labels...
TO TAKE IT UP A NOTCH-ADD THE FOLLOWING:
Scrap vinyl (at least 8.5” x 11”)
Adhesive spray (permanent grip)
Black fabric marker (optional but recommended)
Parchment paper (to protect your work surface)
TO MAKE THEM READY TO SELL ON ETSY-SWAP OUT THE MARKER FOR:
Edge coat base (I use Giardini from buckleguy.com)
Edge coat paint (I use Giardini from buckleguy.com)
Applicator of your choice (The tools I’m using in the video were purchased from Amazon).

Clips (or another way to support your tags while they dry)
Sandpaper (optional)

Another amazing video, definitely going to make these. If you use a sharpie to edge coat and then put a finish edge coat glaze on , that looks good too, and is cheaper than buying every colour of edge coat x

I have found that rounding the coroners on things tends to make them look more professional, and I bet that would look great on these too. Please share more of your great ideas.

I was wondering about using kraftex or other faux leather products also.
I was wondering about that too! But I didn’t have time to test them and didn’t want to send people out blindly into failure. Haha. Give it a try and let me know how it goes!
I couldn't get kraftex to feed thru my printer. I washed a piece even and used all different paper settings :(

As I was watching I thought they were the kind folded and sewed into a side seam. I would like to see one on a project if you please. You mentioned the rivets.

Thank you! I think there are probably lots of options. I may or may not have been seen in the fabric aisle of Walmart rubbing and pinching every single “faux” product they have.

Hi! I haven’t but other people have using this tutorial and it’s worked well. I would try on a scrap piece first - that stuff is expensive!
I tried this tonight and 1 set sat a little longer out of the printer and they worked well but if I went straight from printing to spraying it they like disappeared, like the ink disappeared. It was weird, I'm guessing the ink from the printer needs to set for a bit before you spray them? Maybe sprayed too much?
Hmmmmmm it may be a variation between brands, too? But yes, I would be sure the ink is fully dry first.
Start with a very light coat of spray and then come back with a second coat if necessary. Just kiss it with spray the first time.

Do you think I could run them through my laser printer? I tried looking for printing info for the sheets and it's only mentioning the cutting machine.
I’m not sure - I think you may need to tape the top, left and right sides if you do that since it goes through the machine a bit more forcefully than an inkjet. But I say give it a try!

Thank you! It is thick enough that it stays in place while it dries without dripping. They key is to do thin layers (adding more layers if you need better coverage).

Those are Clover Wonder Clips! They’re used in sewing instead of pins.
I had to tape my faux leather to cardstock off set by about an inch, otherwise it got stuck in my printer. Do you think they will fade in the washing machine without the spray?
Hmmmmm I would think they would fade in a washing machine over time.
You may want to experiment with pre-treating the leather sheets with the jet set solution I demonstrate in the fabric tags tutorial.

Just wondering why you have to spray after printing? Will the ink rub off after drying?
Hi! Yes, it does rub off with an inkjet.
i am confused about printer, inkjet doesn't have toner, that would laser
I demonstrated these on an inkjet but you can also use a laser printer.
Can decovil be used?
Maybe! They'd be fusible . . . but not sure how they'd do going through your printer. Let us know what you find out!

Just curious if you’ve tried like foil quill/ foil for cricut on the black if that would work?
I did try it and it worked - but kept rubbing off. I wouldn’t be comfortable recommending it as is. Although it might work if sprayed with clear seal coat afterward?!

Can this be done with laser printer? I tried my injet and it barely showed up at all😩😩😩
Yes it can be and works very well. However, if you’re printing on a dark subsurface be mindful of the thickness of the lettering/images.
You want to be sure to use a font that isn’t too thin and you may want to have bold setting. Next, be sure your printer is set to print at best (rather than normal or draft). This will put more ink/toner on the surface.
I don't understand. Why did you put the paper on the leather for the print to print on the paper but when you showed us it in the water, it was printed on the suede?
Hi! The paper is used as a carrier sheet to move the suede through the printer. The printer printed onto the suede side. If I had flipped the carrier paper over then the printer would have printed on the paper.

Sorry! It’s been a while since I watched it and had the refresh my memory. That paper printing was an accident - I should have removed the extra paper before printing. The suede grabbed the extra piece of paper under it as it went through. I left that in the video to keep you from making the same mistake. So you’ll tape your suede to one piece of paper, remove all the other paper from your machine and then print.

What kind of printer do you use? I tried with mine and the sheets kept getting stuck.

I use an HP Envy 5530. I know a few people have used laser printers and other inkjets.
You may want to go into your printer settings and tell it that you’re printing premium paper (various options depending on your printer type).
Also, triple check that your sheets are exactly to the right width.
Would a laser printer work? If not, why?
Hi! Several people have used the laser printer and it works really well! If you do that you can skip the clear spray paint.
Will this work with a laser jet printer?
It will but it depends on whether your machine can accept the material. Check the specifications for speciality papers (you may need to look online at your manufacturer/model)
