- The leaves have all turned here now at the off grid homestead, and it is a beautiful time to be in the bush! In this video we went over some new and much needed additions to the offgrid cabin. These little upgrades should make life a little easier at the cabin. We also worked on getting all of our firewood hauled in and stacked.
Join my dog and I at our wilderness homestead in the Canadian North. This channel features videos on off-the-grid lifestyle and building, trapline adventures, hunting, fishing, trucks and much more!
I live off the land in a self reliant and self sufficient lifestyle. The land provides me with everything I need. My offgrid cabin is solar powered, heated by a wood stove and most everything I eat comes from the land; fish, eggs from my chickens, and many different wild game species. The lifestyle I live is essentially expense free and blesses me with the opportunity to do whatever I please.
In the winter months we head out on the trapline and ethically harvest fur bearing animals. Through moderate and sustainable methods I snare and trap these animals and work on, and sell the pelts at auction which provides a decent income for me to invest in my off the grid homestead and lifestyle.

Couple things, you can disregard the last bit of this video as I got it all figured out here now. I am also looking for recommendations on brand of deep cycle battery for my solar system. probably agm is best but i want something that is pretty decent yet not stupid expensive. thank you kindly and all the best
look up will prowse i believe, good stuff. probably gunna end up with lead acid if you're not looking to spend stupid amounts of money. lithium solar is a good channel for info as well. it would be a good investment to get a MPPT charge controller (mppt is considerably more efficient) with a decent amp limit so that you can run your panels in a 24 volts configuration to the the controller. with 24v you get a longer charging day because the batts need like a min 12.4v to charge or something like that, not sure. but the higher voltage will help take advantage of the short days in the winter. i hope that makes sense. buying the components individually is much cheaper, and you usually get more amp hours for your money as well. lithium batts dont do great in freezing temperatures either, so lead acid might be better anyways. oh and i dont know if you knew or not but you shouldn't discharge your lead acid batt below 50% or you will damage it and greatly reduce its lifespan
Have you thought about a battery out of a electric fork lift.
If your looking to save money while increasing storage capacity you could consider using a pair of 6 volt golf cart batteries in series. I don’t know how much things cost in Canada compared to U.S. However going the 6 volt route and wiring in series is usually much cheaper if you need more power capacity. It could be an option to consider. Good luck
Interstate batteries
Bro you can supplement your inverter and battery with a 2-in-1 power station. It’s portable too so you can take it with you wherever and it usually comes connected with starter cables as well. Charges right up through the panels if you have it set up right. I have the black and decker and it works great for bush-like applications.

Put a back on the bookshelf and bolt it to the floor by your open area at your smoke stack. Makes a “fence” and frees up room over by your bed.

saw mill build you a pole barn cut your trees for the siding and leave one side live edge looks AWSOME and will only cost you the price of the mill and then yxan also use it to build your cabin,and people will pay you to saw lumber for them. IT'S A WIN WIN!!!

You should make a simple table that’s hinged to your wall with a removable leg to have your meals on. Think you need a wee bit more ketchup on your scran( Scottish for food) 😆.

If that thing was a Canadian Detector it’d be pegged at 100 and chirping like all hell. Love the vids! If you have a PO Box, post it in your vids. There’s a lot of viewers who would love to pay you back for the awesome content. A cordless saw or some additional trapping gear to expand the line. Or an exhaust for the ram charger. You never know. There’s a lot of viewers who are grateful for the entertainment from your content. Keep it up!

When you were building your cabin, you came up with a load of rough sawn one by lumber you used mostly for siding. I remember you commenting how cheap it was. How about building a lean-to onto your cabin, (kitchen wall). Just a couple of thoughts. You are a smart guy, you will figure out something.
I would say to frame one up, and chainsaw some rough boards up for the exterior. Roofing material is easy.
G Bruce funny I just mentioned the same thing. Would make a nice addition for dry storage.
@@003fulle I just remembered he mentioned he did not want to block his view from the window over the sink. That wall is only 10 feet long with the window centered. He could do it on the opposite side but would require a floor. It seems like the most economical way to get insulated space.

My company had me driving around in a truck with an exhaust leak. Id smell it bad every time I stopped at a light. I kept telling them it was dangerous, took them 4 months to fix it so I was riding around with my windows open all winter here in Illinois. Your video reminded me of that haha. Stay safe!

Just some helpful information. You want to keep your battery load no more than 20 Amps. So one battery 12 volts x 20 amps = 240 watts. That coffee maker most likely drawing 850 watts. Ideally run 4 batteries in your bank. The lower the amp draw per battery the better health for your battery pack.

Hey there. I'm loving your channel, mister. I chuckle and learn things at the same time. I'm much older but built my off-grid cabin in the woods of Montana about six years ago as my happy place and go there most weekends. Generally thought I would just sit there and relax by the fire and drink Scotch, but there is always work to be done. This past weekend I finally got my 750 watts of solar panels installed on a permanent steel post in concrete -- with the help of a friend who welded me an amazing, custom panel holder. We had to install it during high winds, which turned out fine because it let me know the set up wasn't going to go anywhere -- ever. We'd had it on a temporary wooden stand that scared the crap out of me because it would sway and creak in the wind. Anyway, keep up the great content. You're shitloads entertaining!

Get a hand coffee grinder, a 25lb sack of beans. Use anything to boil water( butane, propane hotplate etc.) put the ground beans in a paper filter dump in hot water and enjoy simple brew.
Damazon has a stainless steel French press coffee pot for twenty five bucks. Great video. Keep up the great work.

You can make tea in your coffee maker, if you want more, I do it sometimes, just put 2 or 3 tea bags where you put the ground coffee.

Usually more expensive alarms don't go in alarm just from cooking, I worked for a smoke alarm and co company, alot of people returned ours saying they were defective. Which in fact companies designed them with sensors to detect actual fire smoke. What ends up happening with old alarms is you burn food and your alarm dies eventually after the years, and you burn or suffocate to death forgetting to replace the batteries. Great vid as always man, keep up the good work!

READ THIS - Carbon monoxide detectors - >30ppm is only dangerous if you fall asleep for hours - until you don't wake up. So they have to have a low threshhold for the alarm, just in case you fall asleep. But it is not a problem to be exposed to higher levels for a short period of time if you are wide awake and out and about. But high levels indoors or in a vehicle can be fatal very quickly (less than a minute) - open door and windows and get outside straight away if you begin to feel drowsy.
