Bushcamp - Adding Way More Solar Power at the Offgrid Homestead

  • In this video we add more solar power at the offgrid homestead. I got 6 new solar panels for my cabin so I had to build a new solar panel stand. I built a very simple and solid solar panel stand using a few fence posts and a couple rails. I then installed all of the panels onto the stand. I also got a new 60am mppt charge controller that we installed in this video. I then built another solar panel stand at the workshop and hooked up a couple panels that I will use to power the workshop. All that is left to do on my solar system is the battery bank which we will install in a couple of videos.
Join my dog and I at our wilderness homestead in the Canadian North. This channel features videos on off-the-grid lifestyle and building, trapline adventures, hunting, fishing, trucks and much more!
I live off the land in a self reliant and self sufficient lifestyle. The land provides me with everything I need. My offgrid cabin is solar powered, heated by a wood stove and most everything I eat comes from the land; fish, eggs from my chickens, and many different wild game species. The lifestyle I live is essentially expense free and blesses me with the opportunity to do whatever I please.
In the winter months we head out on the trapline and ethically harvest fur bearing animals. Through moderate and sustainable methods I snare and trap these animals and work on, and sell the pelts at auction which provides a decent income for me to invest in my off the grid homestead and lifestyle.

Nice way to show that solar can be built piece by piece. You don't need the "perfect" system to git er dun. You just need what you can afford and works for you.

You should consider putting a simple light in with the chickens, not a heat lamp or anything fancy like that, just a regular bulb, it will trick them into laying eggs longer in the winter.

If you have a longer (18"?) masonry bit and a hammer drill, you can drill several holes (6-8 or so) down into the ground, then pour boiling water down the holes. The water should melt everything enough so you can dig down. Used to do that to install poles here mid winter.

This video reminds me of being at my Dad's house and hearing him go on and on about his solar system. He made the switch a few years ago, but it's been a lifelong dream of his. My grandpa tried to start a solar installation business in Florida in the 60s that never took off unfortunately, but my Dad has been talking about it since then lol. He LOVES when people ask him about his panels, so he can pull up the app and show off his stats. 🤣

You hooked three panels in parallel = 12 volts. Then three panels in parallel =12 volts. Then series the two sets =24 volts. That made your amps higher that way. You did good over sizing the controller. Great videos.

Hot water will take the freeze out of those holes. Great video. Real progress. Check out some Ruropean grocery stores for something called jarred Russian salad or polish dinner salad. It is usually cabbage, shredded carrots, red bell peppers and cucumbers in a mildly sweet vinegar pickle. I have it when I am short on veggies and am only eating fish. Balances the diet real well. About $3 a jar for several meals. On my final home which I have sold I had 48 panels, a 9.9kw system with three inverters. Made just over 1 mw a month on average. Had almost no electric bill on 2400 sq ft 1926 house. Grid tied system. Used it for 9 years before I sold.

In the winter I angled my panels to about 15 degrees and 30 in the summer here in Northern Ontario and this gave me the most power from the panels. My inverter gave me all the information on what the panels were producing. The reason for the different angle to the sun is higher in the summer than in the winter. The different angle does make a difference

So it's best to bump up the volts that are coming from the solar into the CC. Then there power it's sending over the long wire run is more efficient. So if I where you I would put 3 of your panels in series then put the 2 sets in parallel. This will help you a LOT. Yes the lower watts your seeing is the CC slowing down the charge as it's filling the batts. A MPPT CC has 3 charging algorithm. First is MPPT next is absorb last is float. MPPT will be the MOST power that can go into your batts. Absorb will be the last 10% ish of the power going into your batts. In this you will see the volts stay the same but the amps slowly go down. Last is Float. Float is just the power you need to keep the loads running and the batts topped off.
So I been working and living with solar for the beater part of 20 years. Heck 98% of my 120 volt loads in my home are run off-grid 24/7. I do post videos on my solar if you would like to see. Thanks for sharing with us brother. I been with you from the day you setup your first solar. I see all your videos. Just SUCK at commenting. Take care brother. God Bless!!

If the 40A charge controller is cheap buy one as a backup. Having a spare controller is a good idea if you are off grid. You don't need a Tesla power wall, expensive overkill, and prices going up. But you might want to look at a big Lithium 12v battery for your next system. Lithium batteries are much more expensive than gel or GM but you can run them down to a lower voltage, so you get more storage capacity, probably double. And they are limited to outputting 100A, so you need a few if you want to run heavy loads. But unless the Renergy charge controller has a lithium setting you will also need to get a new charge controller, as lithium needs more careful management. Running a washing machine is going to be difficult ask for solar - especially new machines which don't have hot water inputs. Weather is still mild and miserable here in Scotland, we had some snow a couple of weeks ago but it was only for a couple of days. We are at 57N so must be about the same as you - short winter days but we don't get the long dry and extreme cold like you do.

I really enjoy watching you!! You might consider a lean to off the workshop for storing the wheeler and your snow-go under!!!

got good advice for your solar system, live in pennsylvaina, us.. got small cabin like yours, know you are getting batteries next, get either, 3) 150 amp hour or 4) 100amp hour batteries, here is the next key for cloudy days and short winter sun light, a convertor battery charger, not, i repeat not an auto battery charger.... the convertor charger using your generator to top off batteries... good show
