    I've always done that! Sometimes when I'm at my apartment I'll even repeat the same 1-3 lines over and over again. I usually repeat other people if im replaying a memory in my head, but I also repeat myself. I think the reason for that is that I'm trying to hear myself how I sounded, or I say it again to make the sentence come out the "right" way. I don't know how to describe it, but sometimes I just get stuck on a word or sentence until I've said it in a way my brain feels was just right. Maybe that's why connor does it too!

      I Ditto your remark. Pun intended...I Do that to...When I'm in my own apartment, I will repeat what I say in order to rehear it.Maybe I'm repeating it to comprehend that I have competency in language...Maybe it helps me affirm and acknowledge I'm competent in language because I so often feel I'm not being heard or understood in social situations my whole life?. But most of the time I'm unconcious about doing it....I am very late self diagnosed Autistic but I am formally late diagnosed with Social communication disorder ( Pragmatic).. also Diagnosed With ADHD....I also have problems with Auditory processing Disorder where someone will say something and It just sounds garbled or muffled to me especially when other noises are around.....My whole life since I was a child , when people say something in a distracting or multiple noise environment,I have had the repeated experience of saying " Huh" several times until it's embarrassing because the person gets irritated with repeating themselves . sometimes I say " excuse me" or" I Didn't Hear you" or I didn't catch that so it's not the same phrase repetition....But bottom line people get tired of repeating themselves understandably...Frequently I Just act like I understood what they said in order to avoid the extended embarrassing contact.....It's kind of like they might say "Are you worried about the weather today" but I might hear " Paw you flurried a flout the Heather ( But "Today" is completely muffled). SO I Just say Huh ,pardon me ,Point at my ear, Or pretend to hear what they say by just nodding affirmatively so they don't get frustrated with me.. ...I'm in my late fifties and I Have dealt with this my whole life...It Put me way behind in math.....Ironically I did okay in language arts because I learned the alphabet and its phonetic equivalents and I used dictionaries alot....My echolalia served me well because I was better at reading out loud then most of the other boys in my class....I was able to master pronunciation of words while trying to understand their meaning in the dictionary...This process empowered me because I didn't have to constantly ask a teacher to repeat themselves..I could as a solitary student read and use the dictionary once I comprehended english pronuniciation...This reading comprehension gave me some self esteem whereas math made me feel inadequate and stupid.......I couldn't keep asking the teacher to repeat themselves Ad Infinitem.......maybe my self echolalia empowered me because I at least knew I could repeat myself to myself without making others to upset If whispering or by myself alone repeating....Plus It helped me practice the phrase so it was second nature.......Maybe if I could communicate meaning to myself I knew I had a chance of doing so to others....When others talk it can inhibit me from spontaneously communicating back...One because I don't want to Rudely interrupt them. 2 because I might not have " Heard " what they said because it was garbled nonsense to my misprocessing ear.3 sometimes people have such strong opinions that I don't want to say something to upset their Apple cart of opinions and exacerbate interpersonal conflict....But after years of Masking ,I Can seem like a neurotypical often......But It's often a very lonely life since I only sometimes tell people I have these issues ...Often I try to keep it to myself....It Helps me to look at your channel because it helps me recall and contextuallise early memories as a Autistic child... With Years of masking its not hard to forget the nature of our social struggle as children.

    Happy birthday Connor!!!! I hope you know that you are a gift being yourself and many people care.
    I don't have verbal stims but they are typically signs along with other things where autism surges for me. It can mean the tags bothering me, noises are louder, walking on my toes. I do tend to reshare something multiple times if it is important to me especially if I don't get the response I wanted.

  • @bagelbagelwah5047
    @bagelbagelwah5047 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I sometimes do that echo effect when the words that I say don't really "register" in my head after saying them. This happens a lot when I'm experiencing sensory overload. Sensory overload is a common reason that I dissociate (depersonalization/derealization), and dissociation dampens my perception of all sensory input I'm receiving. (This can easily lead to me feeling "numb," or that the world around me is a dream and not really real). As a result, when I speak in this state, I don't really hear myself clearly the way that I usually do, because my brain isn't processing my auditory sensory inputs as vividly or as effectively anymore. Echoing the words I just said is sometimes my way of "confirming" that my words actually audibly exist and were spoken from me.

    • @creativecompanion
      @creativecompanion 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This explains really well what also happens to me that I could not find words to describe. A dream feeling. And like I can't quite understand as well as usual so need to repeat words to make them make sense or feel real.

    Alistair, you're so funny 😂
    Hi sweet Conner. I like penguins too. I just like all birds in general, specifically ducks and turkeys but I find penguins and parrots fascinating. Oh and happy birthday!
    I have a little bit of a similar whisper thing like Connor, if not it's exactly like his. Sometimes I say something and would whisper it to myself under my breath. Sometimes I don't even realize I'm doing it.
    Hope you're all healthy physically and mentally and happy March, my favorite month 🍀🌈

    Its so funny how Conner seems kind of timid when he is just being interviewed, but the second he is intrigued by something (the penguin toy) he is so articulate and can go on theses long runoff sentences. He's really such a neat kid, and in your on screen family dynamic he comes off as such a unique person. (Obviously they are all unique, but Ian and Alistair *seem* to have more in common Autism wise, than Conner). Side note Alistair stimming was adorable and hilarious. This channel is truly a hidden gem

    I am 28 years old, autistic, diagnosed around 6 years old. I do the same, but the whispering I do mostly in my head. I sometimes repeat what I said unconsciously in my thoughts. Often very disturbing for myself and it sometimes gives me a slight overstimulation. Sometimes I just don't realize that I do it, but it is very exhausting. This video actually makes me realize that it is an autistic trait of mine, and consciously standing still with it helps me to accept it and reduce it a bit. I am currently on a quest to rediscover myself, and to understand why I have difficulty with certain things in daily life. And to link this to my autism, and just learn to like myself again, and not to criticize myself. I have performed well for years, but my skills started to deteriorate. I would therefore like to thank Autism Familly for all the videos on the topic of autism, it is also very interesting for young adults like me to understand ourselves again and it helps to deal better with ourselves and daily life. big thanks, keep making videos. It makes the world a better place.

    I do lots of repetitive things that aren't majorly obvious. The main one that I do, is after asking someone a question, when they answer, I repeat their answer. I don't do this all the time, mostly in one -to-one conversations. I see a lot of myself in your son Connor. We are quite complex creatures, and some of our struggles can go unnoticed because of our quiet, gentle ways. I have to say, however, that Connor looks and seems very calm and happy! You are fantastic parents. Lots of love to you all 🤗💖

    Your kids are awesome. They all have their own personalities and it is evident how much love and work and consistent dedication you and Brittany put in over the years. Love your family, love your videos. It's nice to see families where you provide support but don't limit your kids lives. I see too many "helicopter parents" nowadays and bet they'll end up not respecting their families.

  • @EverSnaxolotl
    @EverSnaxolotl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting. Thank you so much for this video specifically!
    I actually used to do this as a kid, and I can actually tell you why I did this (not diagnosed autistic though). For me, it was whenever I had to mentally prepare to say something, so the sentence would still float around in my head, and sometimes come out in this way.
    It'd happen more frequently in stressful situations because my brain would wonder about whether what I had just said might have been awkward, making the sentence bounce around in my head even more. That could be what you saw with Connor doing it unintentionally in the end.
    Honestly, I was so happy when a few months ago I talked to a kid who was doing this all the time, and it was so incredible to see that I'm not the only person who did this, so again thanks for this video, makes me feel like kid me might have belonged somewhere after all.

    I do this in my head many times with directions, for an example if my gps tells me turn left on third street, that same phrase will repeat several times in my head, it's frustrating only because i always look at the gps several times as if i'm not repeating the directions in my head. I'm not sure if that's a form of echolalia but i do know I also repeat what others say several times a day, it's gotten me in trouble over the years because people think i'm making fun of them.

    Hello guys!
    I don't have autism (at least, not that I know of) but I'm in the ADHD bracket. And I used to do this all the time when I was a kid. Sometimes even now as an adult. I would do the same thing as Connor and repeat a certain word or phrase that I just said.
    Or I would hear someone else talk and repeat a word they said over and over to myself. A relative of mine would do the same thing. We'd just call it "repeating" until I found the term palilalia! 😂
    So maybe it is simply a form of stim or way for Connor to "go over" what he just said in his head. I think that is how I felt about it.
    Sorry for the long comment! Glad to see you guys again and hope you're doing well. Happy Birthday Connor! 😁

      Einstein didn't speak till 3.5 and he created quantum theory. He was never that good at reading comprehension or writing, but that did not matter. Find his interests, play up on strengths, steadily work on areas that could use improvement. Just love him. He's your son, even if he might relate differently than you expected. Love comes in more forms than just verbal language. Learn to relate to him because you'll be able to learn how to help him relate to this world. I have Asperger's. Seek out other autism parents. Support is everything. Do not isolate yourself ever! Always ask for help and advice as needed. Autism takes a village, as they say, and you are doing yourselves both a disservice if you don't allow for community support PRN.

      @@echofoxtrot2.051 Thankyou so much for your kind words and encouragement. I have been so disheartened and heavy hearted lately to watch his peers surpass him. I have one on each side of my family with that name. I even have a friend whose name is also Connor. Happy Belated Birthday, Connor. I feel like I may have autism. When I was 2, my mom took me to a doctor to check if I had autism. This was because I always stimmed, hated loud noises, couldn’t talk at 2, etc. the doctor said I had a sensory processing disorder, but no autism. Now, I think that I may actually have autism because the more I watch videos about autism, the more and more I feel understood and can relate.
    Has anyone else experiencing this, or has experienced it and then got a diagnosis? Is it worth trying to get a diagnosis?

    As far as I know. I’m a highly functioning member of society. However sometimes after I say something I’m unsure about to someone I’ll wait until I’m within my solitude to repeat it to myself almost maniacally over and over again until it makes perfect sense to me and I convince myself that what I said was correct and it wasn’t weird or strange to say. That in itself is both weird and strange yet I kinda can’t help it at times. But then I won’t do it for months, and then I’ll do it multiple times a week. Nothing I’ve ever mentioned to any one. I realize as I’m typing it out it sounds absolutely bonkers

    When I listen to someone speak I repeat their words in my head as they speak trying to understand them better. Lyrics of songs too. And then it just goes on automatic in my head, when I'm sleeping too, the words keep repeating. If it's negative words I try to replace them with something different so it is more of an uplifting experience.
    Also if something is funny, like a joke, I find myself repeating it to try to understand what makes it funny.

    Maybe an example of it in tv could be *Brick from the middle . Who in early seasons would do the echo whisper thing.
    Just as an example.

    I do this! I am not autistic but I am diagnosed with Adhd. when I do it im completely unaware I do it until someone points it out. Sometimes it is vocal though, like ill repeat a phrase from a song or movie over, and over, and over again. i tell myself to shut up sometimes after lol. I just thought I was weird but I researched it and I feel better about it! I've also seen people say it's a nervous tic? not sure but I'm so glad im not the only one out there with this!

      Thanks for the explanation. My son does this too and I’ll observe if he is nervous when he does it. 😊

    I’ve always done this. It’s involuntary. Very common in Autism. More common in what they used to call Aspergers syndrome.

    I have that but I mask and try to hide stims so I only do it when I'm alone. I have autistic friends who do this, they are both male and don't mask.

    Hello! If you don’t mind me asking, how old was your son when he started speaking? My daughter is 4 and a half years old and still does not say a word

  • @littlecamo8
    @littlecamo8 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I do this! I used to do it at a normal volume, but was made fufn of or smacked when I echoed myself! I call it a mix of a stim and a type of echolalia (can’t spell). I learned to lower my volume when doing it to fit in and not get hurt by my parents, but it’s something I have to do (like a stim). Only, too normal people I take weird pauses in the middle of the sentence, cause I can’t wait until the end, lol

    Hello Autism Family, I was wondering if you could share your experience with elopement. I saw the video of your son who eloped from school and wanted to know when this behavior started to decrease and if it has gone away completely?. Our son just turned 6 and has had 6 major elopement incidences since he was 2. I'm doing everything- OT, Speech, ABA etc just hoping this might decrease with age?

    Interesting how they made that part of "Brick's" character/behavior in the TV show "The Middle." Though never declared as such, the "Brick" character is often cited as being on the spectrum.

      This was my first thought too! He was also in a “social group” as well at school and he preferred reading over human interaction.

    This is exactly what my 8yo does. He has been doing this since he was 5-6yo. He doesn’t notice he does it though. When I say he is echoing himself, he says he isnt. But EVERYONE hears it. 😂

    My 6 year old autistic daughter has started doing this. I’ve caught her repeating things she’s heard in a quiet voice. I just sort of figured it was an autistic thing

    I have a "high functioning" relative who did this for a period of time. I thought it served the purpose of allowing this person to more deeply think about what he had said and to think about how it would come across to others. I saw it as something he went through when his social awareness was growing, and he wanted to self -evaluate and give attention to how he was expressing himself. Blessings to your family.

    With Tourette’s, that would be called Palilalia, echoing your own words. If his brother had said “I like penguins” and he started saying “penguins penguins penguins…” that would be echolalia, echoing someone else’s words.
