  • My grandma--ever the optimist--would say that Skyward Sword is an excellent opportunity for improvement. And if Nintendo wants Skyward Sword HD to resonate more strongly with players this time around, here are some changes they absolutely need to make.

    And it still baffles me that most people don't realize just how BIG of a deal it was for BotW to start the game like "Here, this is your character, this is the world, go at it". No tutorials, npcs talking, nothing. The game just starts right away.

    • @nosephhh1570
      @nosephhh1570 3 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      I think Nintendo needs to strike the perfect balance between the two for today's standards. With Skyward Sword the lack of exploration got tiresome, and without an engaging story/characters/overall theme/tonal atmosphere BoTW got boring.

    • @ardenorcrush649
      @ardenorcrush649 3 ปีที่แล้ว +115

      The start of the game is a forced tutorial until you unlock the glider. The genius part is letting the mechanics speak for themselves instead of having the old man following you around the plateau and screaming HEY LISTEN, YOU NEED TO DO THIS every 30 seconds.

    • @HenrikMyrhaug
      @HenrikMyrhaug 3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Actually, BotW does have a tutorial, it just makes it much less obvoius. In order to get off the plateau(the intended way), you have to awaken the shiekah tower, talk with the old man a few times and aquire and learn to use the runes, get the 4 spirit orbs from the shrines, then solve the old man's riddle to find the old man on top of the temple and talk to him again.
      The revolutionary thing is more how subtle Nintendo makes the tutorial, so that it doesn't feel at all like you are following a scripted path, though you actually kinda are. Adding a lot of monsters, hidden chests and a mini boss on the plateau, in adition to making the shrines completable in any order was a stroke of genius though, as it makes the tutorial feel less like a tutorial, and more like a non- linear gameplay experience, like the rest of the game. I have seen many people who end up spending between 3 and 10 hours on this tutorial section, while enjoying every bit of it.
      SS, TP and WW all have lengthy introductions that have long story segments with a few gameplay tutorials sprinkled throughout. While these tutorials are usually just about 1-2 hours, they don't allow the player to do much optional content, and they are all extremely linear, making the 1-2 hour inteoduction to these games feel more stale than the usually 3-10 hour tutorial area of BotW.

      @@nosephhh1570 yeah I found the characters in BOTW to be quite boring as far as Zelda characters go (with a few exceptions.) if I can get traditional dungeons with the exploratory nature of BOTW I’ll be good. Also, weapons that don’t break. It was an interesting mechanic initially but later on I was begging for a more traditional weapon experience

    • @HimmelsDaemon
      @HimmelsDaemon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Klffsj I wouldn't put myself in "fan" title, but the mechanical fixes and touches would do a lot. My personal complains are more around organization/structure, the "hyper linearity." (That's a "thing" not worth getting on. I like Twilight [Wolf&Midna] and I'ma a Ocarina/Majora's person.) I liked the story mostly, and liked the "role-play" story bit; that all is probably my favorite thing along with the gratitude collecting for Batreaux. Liked the progression of/with Groose too.
      I guess I got "lucky" with the motion controls working super well for me, almost never needed to calibrate the wii-mote. Though combat with Bokoblins was the worst cause they'd snap to block... the electric sword ones were "better" cause I could take a heart and then just sorta spam stun-lock kill them. Otherwise I really like the motion-controls, but also I loved the idea of it, so... ^^
      I found the repeat Ghirahim more tedious then the Imprisoned, those were alright and not much trouble. Similar to the Bokoblins and with my motion control luck, of the Ghirahim fights I abused the motion controls to stun-lock him for at least more damage then is intended and at least a full kill on one of them. (Fast little waggling swinging though not a guarantee.)
      Places and characters where cool and neat. Same with the designs and aesthetics. Lanayru was/is particularly intriguing.
      With Twilight Princess and what Arlo mentions about some people with the beginning, that's more of a problem with replaying it. So many mandatory little tutorial activities and a few just vaguely build-up story. Skywards beginning is alot of almost like a little visual novel stuff.
      Speaking of that though; I liked the returns, but I probably wouldn't want to do those again either.
      Don't know if there's anything to those old rumors of its production or not, but really the stick controls alone would make it even playable, cause regards of any other opinionated complaints, that's by far the biggest objective issue I've seen most people say.
      And like Arlo implies, most of those opinions or ones on the structure would be making another game entirely, or vastly so.

    Fi's problem was that she was supposed to be an integral part of the story but they couldn't have a Hylian sized robot imouto floating at your side the entire time the way Navi did. So, they decided that the best way for her to remain relevant was that she would regularly talk to Link, as a companion on the adventure rather than a flying hint buddy. The problem is that they just went overboard. If most of her appearances become optional and they get rid of or limit the horrific pinging sound when she wants to talk, I think she'll be a much better companion.

    ironically enough, Skyward Sword is my second or third favourite 3D zelda title, and also the first one that I played. I really like it, but I think the problem with Fi talking too much, the hand-holding nature of the game and that one part of Eldin Volcano where you need to roll the bomb flowers into holes to drain the lava should be reworked, along with maybe a better way to use the goddess sword without using the right analog stick because how else am I going to use the camera? Furthermore, Barry of Game Grumps fame made a really good video years back about the sky area in SS, and how it could be reworked to make it more fun to navigate - it's a really good video and I strongly agree with he talked about, and would love to see a more fun and expansive sky area with more clouds and things to do. Also more Ghirahim tongue moments because they're weird and uncomfortable and I like that
    Maybe also some lighting changes? The game is quite bright at times, I think it could do with more visually dark areas; such as the cave in the beginning of the game and the underwater cave in the Faron region

    I honestly had no idea that the game's opening was so divisive. I've actually been talking about this elsewhere today, but Skyward sword is actually one of my top 5 Zelda games, probably tied with Breath of the Wild. The other thing that caught me off guard was the bit about not wanting to go back and talk to the characters in Skyloft. I don't think I ever felt that way. To me, it was, "Oh ya, I'm talking to this person, so they're going to say their thing," and I was perfectly fine with that.

    • @HunterStiles651
      @HunterStiles651 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah. The opening is fine. Unlike the Twilight Princess Tutorial it has a lot of memorable interactions between Link and the residents of Skyloft that make it worth sitting through. Ask me to name random side characters in Zelda and I'd probably remember the Fortune Teller before I remember a single character in the TP Tutorial. Not to mention it has one of the best character introductions in video game history, let alone Zelda: Groose.
      EDIT: The Imprisoned and Silent Realm deserve to be forgotten with all of 2000's Nintendo's other horrible game design choices though.

    You're pretty much spot on with this whole video dude.
    I love Skyward Sword, I think its criminally underrated, but I do see it's flaws, and I hope they fix up the things that were a little rough. I think they will though, they were able to streamline Wind Waker's final (absurd) fetch quest and they worked on making Twilight Princess a more polished gem, and that was for a complete failure of a console that was already dead. Consider the HUGE success the Switch has been and the massive amount of new players BotW has brought in...I think they have been working on getting this game right for some time, remember that Eiji Aonuma talked about this port/remaster at the Zelda concert back in 2018.
    A few of the problems with this game (some that you rightfully addressed in the video) are actually fairly easy fixes. The rupee/item messages, and Fi are easy enough to code out, and the motion controls are confirmed to be optional. Those seem to be some of the biggest complaints I've seen about the game through the years...so I have a lot of hope that they will redeem this game and hopefully it will introduce the classic Zelda formula to a lot of the new players BotW managed to bring in.
    I'm excited to see the response and chatter that happens once this game comes out.

    You made a really good point about accessibility that literally no one else who's... not taken kindly to my adoration of Skyward Sword has presented before. They always sighted that the controls didn't respond the way they wanted it to, which I also had an issue with until I realized that a swing and a flick were two different motions, but not one person had the level head to say "think about the people who can't make movements like that in the first place". I'm really glad you brought that up.
    I do also agree with making object descriptions less frequent (for obvious reasons) and with needing to make Fi talk less. I didn't have a problem with her for the most part, but she really got on my nerves when she would pop up every 20 minutes to tell me my controller was dying when it wasn't going to be for another 3 - 5 hours.

      @@mattmacleod7489 It was a fair fighting system, to be honest. The last battles were really fun and hard on my first attempts.

      It’s so weird how half of the game is just like an endless hand-holding tutorial and the other half is soul-crushingly difficult combat. There never seemed to be a whole lot in the middle between the two.
      It was less a difficulty curve and more a difficulty cactus... a smooth flat surface with frequent, deadly, narrow spikes.

      I agree right up till you try doing the hoard at the end of the game in hero mode.

    I think skyward sword has some really fun set pieces, I like that part where you get captured and have to re-collect all your items, the fight with the big sky whale guy, the boat level and the final encounter with the tongue guy in particular

    Also, how do you deal with sky keep? Keep the layout as is, meaning earth temple room could still be skipped? You would still need to fight dreadfuse for the small key to the triforce of courage trial...

    Skyward sword was a big part of my childhood, I loved the game, but I could never finish it, and then I lost the disk.
