I think Sonny is currently the best America slide player out there. His unique neck work and phrasing just sets him apart from all others. Yea, that includes Derek Trucks and everyone else..
For sure. He has a very unique sound and you can tell it’s him almost immediately. Unlike a lot of slide players, there is very little slop in his playing, everything is pretty tight, which has to be tough on slide. Saw a show where Sonny warmed up for Robben Ford. Wish I had a tape of that show. For one of the encores, they both got up and played Congo Square. Some of the best guitar playing I ever saw. I have really tried to like Derek’s slide playing , but don’t care for it personally.
