I would guess the only reason it's not possible is because it would take too much force to get the air pushed to that depth (?). Because if you submerge a cup upside down in a bathtub, it CAN hold the air in that position. But it takes pushing to get it down to a depth.
In the end, the commodore understands that Jack saved the day and respects that, so he frees him... he also understands that Elizabeth likes men of character and freeing them in the end would make her admire him more, giving him chances with her
LOL Yeah, just because he's a bit smug and overconfident doesn't equate to him being without some actual humanity. He's obviously in love with Elizabeth and wants what's best for her. Sometimes, I watch reactions and the first impression of a character just stays with them throughout the movie, even when there's some actual nuance and more to the character than just the surface.
Believe it or not, this movie earned Johnny Depp his first ever Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Lost to Sean Penn for the Clint Eastwood-directed MYSTIC RIVER. He has been nominated 2 other times since then for FINDING NEVERLAND (2004) and SWEENEY TODD (2007) respectively. Do not miss FINDING NEVERLAND.
Johnny Depp or Bill Murray should've won Oscar that year (2004), Sean Penn in Mystic River was laughable and overrated. And how JD's not nominated for his performance in Black Mass is beyond me.
@@transarang To be fair Penn was so overdue a win at that point (it was his 4th Best Actor nomination), not to mention the fact that the category usually favors actors in a film nominated for Best Picture (which MYSTIC RIVER was nominated for but didn't win thanks to facing the LOTR: RETURN OF THE KING juggernaut (Clint Eastwood would incidentally end up winning Best Director and Best Picture the very next year for MILLION DOLLAR BABY)). The fact that Johnny Depp even got nominated for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN was a huge miracle in and of itself given the genre bias.
I saw this movie when i was a kid and i fell in love with those characters, dreaming for years and years of being a pirate and roaming the seas. Years later, i found myself in Somalia with a bunch of friends kidnapping people for a living. Never give up on your dreams folks!
Avoid the read sea. The US has warships and drone attacks there atmo. Send me some gold though for the tip, but keep it under your hat, no one knows this info.
This is such a great movie and Jack Sparrow is one of the best movie characters of all time. You may know this already, but Johnny Depp dresses up as Jack Sparrow and visits sick kids in children's hospitals and stuff. He's been doing that for years, which I think is really cool. Also, you guys got to watch the whole franchise. People say the first three are the best, but being a Johnny Depp fan and just liking pirates, I like all of five of them.
Its a good movie but doesnt contribute to the overall story at all. 1-3 are about Will and Elizabeth's love story. 5 was both a continuation and conclusion to that storyline. Number 4 is like a buffer movie that just focusses on Jack. The only thing that actually has an impact is Barbossa losing his leg, but even that happens off-screen and its never again brought up in the sequels. @ericturner4857 Plus it was arguable the weakest villain of the series. I love the actor but Blackbeard was insanely predictable. They went from 3 movies where the villains are crews of unkillable pirates (be it ghost or fish people) to a group of regular humans, only 2 of whom are unkillable. It's a direct downgrade. Alas I still quite like the movie, but only when I watch it on its own. If I'm doing a marathon, I can comfortably skip number 4 without having missed anything important for the 5th.
@ericturner4857 if you read my comment I literally agree with you, I simply explained why people don't like it. Don't be an ass if you can't be bothered to read my comment
One of the reasons I love these movies is because of how well the antagonists are written. I don't even like to consider them "villains" because all of them have so much character and relatability. Commodore Norrington, objectively speaking, is just a man trying to do his job. He is framed as the foil to the protagonists but is never cruel or malicious. Even when he is beaten he takes it gracefully, accepting his mistake of underestimating Jack at the beginning, and even letting Elizabeth go when he realizes she will not be happy if they marry. Then at the other end of the spectrum we have Hector Barbossa. It would have been so easy to make him a generic "evil pirate" but instead the writers took the time and effort to really make you understand the cruelty of the curse he has to live with. He may have been a criminal, but he was still human. It always really stuck with me how he had the apple in his hand in his final scene. After all that he had been through, he wanted the first thing he experienced with his regained humanity to be a bite of his favorite fruit. And he valued that one little apple more than all the treasures he had piled under his feet.
14:19 The air was trapped inside the boat. What isn't realistic is not that you could have a pocket of air this way and not drown inside of it, you could, what isn't realistic is that the air would push upwards and you would need a really heavy weight to pull the boat down and keep it underwater.
the way jack sparrow walks very weird its called "Sea legs". his legs are used to the motion of ships in water, so he looks normal on a ship and off balance on land. u can notice throughout the movies.
6:45 is such a PRIME example that Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter duo in movies so often that people are associating them in separate films. They have been in 7 hit films together
The reason why Barbosa died was because Jack shot him while he was in "alive" form outside of a moonlight. So the bullet hole/wound was still there when the curse was lifted.
I don’t think that’s why. Will’s blood was already spilled. I think they just got lucky that the Curse didn’t require the gold to physically return to the Chest. Will intended on returning it. It’s magic. If they all perished from their injuries sustained while undead, I think all of them would drop dead. Including Jack because Barbosa ran him through with a sword.
@@lilscenechick1995most likely Will dropped the coins while barbosa was still “affected” by the bullet. That’s it. AND it’s just one of those movie things for cool effect lol.
I heard an argument made that it's the fact the bullet was still in his heart when he was re-alived (doesn't explain the blood so much, but hey, cinema)
@@bcross9109 That’s a good theory. I mean when it comes down to it, it was just theatrics. The dramatic timing of Barbosa realizing Will lifted the curse at the exact moment he was shot. For the record, I’m not here to argue or make people feel bad for thinking differently.
Fun fact, Johnny Depp actually wrote most of his own lines. The original script had a very different, much more different character in mind, but Depp was like, nah, trust me I know what this character needs.

18:42 Ash this is why the entire world would look to Hollywood as the gold standard for cinema. It’s how American entertainment culture dominated the world. Now Hollywood is a shell of what it once was. The 2000s will be remembered as one of the golden eras of cinema

blockbuster movies back in the early 2000s could still have themes and heart to them as well as being spectacles and funny. Not to say movies like that don't exist anymore but so many big summer blockbuster movies now just feel so soulless.
You guys are going to love this movie! This whole franchise is so much fun! Davey Jones is one of the coolest Disney characters ever created. Love that Bill Nighy voices him.
I had a small part in this movie (as well as the third one, At World's End). In this one, I was one of Jack's Crew. I'm usually standing next to or near Zoe Saldaña (big, bald guy with orange shirt). We - Jack's Crew - filmed off and on at the studio for four months and went to the Caribbean for six weeks. Total blast. Easily the most fun I've ever had working on a movie.
14:30 The Mythbusters actually did test this movie myth. It's BUSTED, they would not have the strength/weight to hold that much air under water without the boat being lifted up and being seen.
Commodore James Norrington's character was a very fair man. Yes he disliked pirates and he wanted nothing else than to see them either hanged or behind bars but in Jack Sparrow's case he saw how able he was, how much he appreciated his crew and his position as Captain and he could sympathise with that. Same thing with Will, he saw how valuable his skills were but most importantly he saw him as the one guy Elizabeth chose, he would do anything for her even let the man who humiliated him run free. His character is often overlooked in the movies because you have such wonderful people to dote on but James Norrington is a very complex and deep-routed persona, he deserves the praise and Jack Davenport did such a fantastic job portraying him.
BTW ash mythbusters DID do an episode on walking the boat under water and they found that it is possible too breath (air pocket) and walk under water like that with a boat but it's impossible for two men too be able too hold it down with all that air in the boat lifting it bavk too the surface. So that ruled it as BUSTED
14:22: Air bubbles up to the surface and can easily be trapped. DIY: Just put some napkin at the bottom of a cup, flip it upside down, and push it straight down into a bucket of water (or sink, or tub). Pull it back out and the napkin will be dry. This is why there are air pockets in underwater caves.
Johnny Depp improvs A LOT of Jack's lines actually through this series 😂 Also, the same writers also co-wrote Disney's Aladdin. This has been my favorite movie of all time since its release.
first saw this movie when it came out at an old school drive-in by the woods. seeing the skeleton scenes as a kid at night in that atmosphere is one of my favourite memories that I'll die with.
it's a MIRACLE this even got made, let alone turned out as good as it did. Studio head at the time Michael Eisner tried to cancel the project several times and HATED Johnny Depp's portrayal in particular (Eisner's choice for the lead was MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY). He was convinced the movie would flop & Depp would be responsible. It wound up being their biggest earning project of the year & Depp earned an OSCAR NOMINATION. So, take note- NEVER listen to the studio executives.
The ride Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyworld/Disneyland is older than the movie so they put scenes from the ride in the movie. I was laughing at that. Such a fun movie and Johnny Depp is so good. He said he patterned his movements after Keith Richards from The Rolling Stones.
True. But the 4th one has its moments. The 5th one was horrible. Even Johnnys acting was...well...not as it usually is (which is understandable imo) but they changed his hole backstory etc... The writers messed up completely in the last one
Watching you both fall in love with Jack Sparrow like I did at age 17 when I first laid eyes in the theater. I HAD to do a cosplay and my friend who helped me with my costume realized she wasn't just into Jack but she was into ME and we dated for over 2 years.
Plot points of the character were all there but everything that makes Jack sparrow came from Johnny Depp all the dialogue the prancing everywhere he goes, it’s just so good I’m still praying we get another POTC with JD 🙏🏼🙏🏼
At the time of the first Pirates, Hans Zimmer was working on several projects, including composing the scores for The Last Samurai, The Ring, and The Road to Perdition. His busy schedule made it challenging for him to dedicate all his time to the Pirates of the Caribbean score, leading to his collaboration with Klaus Badelt. Hans Zimmer co-composed the music with Klaus Badelt because they were both part of the same music production company, Media Ventures. Zimmer, who was busy with other projects at the time, enlisted Badelt to collaborate on some of the tracks to ensure the film's music was completed on schedule. I bet this is why Hans used some ideas from Gladiator.
Myth busters did the boat underwater air pocket thingy It works in principle, and it’s easy to see how: get a cup, turn it upside down, and try to shove it under water. The air has nowhere to go and stays in the cup. As for two men holding it a boat full of air underwater, ain’t no way. The force of the water trying to rise up is far too much for two men to handle
Someone no doubts said this but Johnny has personally dressed up as jack and visited so many kids in hospital, that man didn’t deserve to have his personal troubles live streamed everywhere during that trial 💔
100% true. He will often do this on short notice and just put on a show. He did this in my city and my friends kid was in the hospital at the time and had a great visit. Jack / Johnny was so considerate of each kid and their needs. I get he's had his fair share of troubles and demons but the guy has a big heart.

There is a big character backstory between Becket and Jack Sparrow in a deleted scene of the second film. Or the first one.. react to that as a youtube short if thsts the only option but its an important scene where it explains how he got branded because of his successful attempted to free a boat full of slaves. Nice! Originally Steven Spielberg was going to direct the film with either Robin Williams or Harrison Ford as Jack Sparrow. However Spielberg turned it down to direct Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can, both released in 2002. Hugh Jackman, Jim Carrey, Michael Keaton, Christopher Walken, Robert DeNiro, Matthew McConaughey, Cary Elwes, Bill Murray, And Steve Martin were considered as well. Tobey Maguire, Jude Law, Ewan McGregor, Brad Peyton, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Tom Hiddleston, and Chris Masterson were considered for Will Turner. Jessica Alba, Amanda Bynes, and Jaimie Alexander were considered for Elizabeth Swann. Sylvester McCoy and the late Tom Wilkinson were considered for Governor Swann.
I’ll never stop loving these movies. Movies like these are absolutely the reason people have fun at the movies! Johnny Depp is THE only person who could play Jack Sparrow. And let’s not forget the magic he has given to others over the years by visiting children’s hospitals while in full Jack Sparrow mode. Props must be given also for Keira Knightly who was only 17 going on 18 in this movie…and dealing with the superstardom that followed was pretty intense for her.
The initial trilogy is so great. The 2nd and 3rd build on the lore and have some great character development. Not as much of the "fairytale" aspect you guys critiqued a bit in regards to the ending of this one. The third one is my personal favorite. There's a scene that is just...truly epic in multiple ways, and one of the most beautiful romantic scores written for a movie I've ever heard.
I feel like the first one was better because it had a tighter focus. The only paranormal thing was the cursed treasure, so we as an audience knew the rules and could get invested. In the sequels it gets a bit nuts and there are all sorts of different elements getting thrown in every five minutes. They're still fun and a great spectacle, but the first one is the superior film.
Before Johnny got dropped there was a fan theory that Witty Jack was an avatar of the Trickster God...which makes sense given his relationship with Calypso.
This January 4, the Spanish director J. Bayona premiered Society of the snow on Netflix. An incredible feat of survival. I saw it in the cinema, Bayona is the master of intimacy and realism. I would guess the only reason it's not possible is because it would take too much force to get the air pushed to that depth (?). Because if you submerge a cup upside down in a bathtub, it CAN hold the air in that position. But it takes pushing to get it down to a depth.
Only if you assume the boat is made out of wood. ;)
Depp wasn't acting drunk. He was trying to portray how a man who spent all his time at sea on a rocking ship would feel imbalanced on land.
I love Sweeny Todd but Finding Neverland is outstandingly brilliant👍👍👍
Lovely movie.
😅😅😅
Bro leave Captain Phillips alone
Best coment here
Avoid the read sea. The US has warships and drone attacks there atmo. Send me some gold though for the tip, but keep it under your hat, no one knows this info.
Lol as a Somali I hate you for this comment but I can’t help but laugh😂😂😂 ps. Are u Eric Cartman
Also he’s dressed up in character and gone to the PoTC ride in Disney. So fun!
Didn't he have to stop doing that once Disney fired him? Life's unfair sometimes.
@ericturner4857
Plus it was arguable the weakest villain of the series.
@@Pink.andahalfno.. he still has a copy of the costume and visits sick kids. Disney seems to have no problem with it
You need to watch the rest of them. Pirates 1-3 are absolutely amazing
One of my favorite parts of this movie is when Will and Jack are dueling the music matches up with the blades making contact. It’s so satisfying
Probably about 2 tonnes. Also compressed air is nearly impossible to breathe in that situation.
@@ThePsychoAnon Yeah, good point.
the way jack sparrow walks very weird its called "Sea legs". his legs are used to the motion of ships in water, so he looks normal on a ship and off balance on land. u can notice throughout the movies.
6:45 is such a PRIME example that Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter duo in movies so often that people are associating them in separate films. They have been in 7 hit films together
The first three are a perfect trilogy with plenty of story. Such a good watch.
I love the trilogy but for some reason dead men’s chest is my personal favorite it’s a lot of fun
When ash doesn't try too get a symbolism he comes up with the best ones ever, but my lord the harder he tries the worse they get 😂❤
Agreed 100%
And that's why we love watching him with it bullshits 😂😂
Glad you enjoyed this one, looking forward to seeing the reactions for the follow-up movies! #2 is one of my favorites!
This has to be one of my favorite films period.
Hans Zimmer score is amazing.
37:56 imagine that the quality of filmmaking in this era was so good that this movie’s screenplay was considered pretty B+ at the time
I legit laughed out loud so fkn hard when they were under water with the boat. "You dont know what youre talking about" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Fun fact, Johnny Depp actually wrote most of his own lines. The original script had a very different, much more different character in mind, but Depp was like, nah, trust me I know what this character needs.
It's so funny you were calling Mythbusters to test that underwater boat gag. THEY DID! It's on a "Pirate Special" episode where they tested it. I won't spoil it but you should check it out!
That monkey smile wasn't in the script, it accidentally smiled at the perfect time when Barbosa said "we named the monkey Jack"
"You best start believing in ghosts stories Ms. Turner.... you're in one", I love that line!
18:42 Ash this is why the entire world would look to Hollywood as the gold standard for cinema. It’s how American entertainment culture dominated the world.
Now Hollywood is a shell of what it once was. The 2000s will be remembered as one of the golden eras of cinema
“A shell of what it once was” is being kind
how can you say that after the amazing year of cinema we've just had? Movies are alive and well!
@@MUZICxCENTRAL The mid 90's to the mid 2000's had some of the best movies ever. We often wondered how good the movies would be today since they were so good then. Never expected such an awful crash.
How have you never watched this masterpiece
Thats what I wanna know
Hannah has a better grasp on the Pirates franchise after 1 film than Ash ever will
I’ve seen this movie about 10 times. Still holds up. What a fun time. 🎉🎉🎉
Captain Jack is the real OG
9:24 The mannerisms of Jack Sparrow are based off of Keith Richards combined with someone who had sun poisoning (due to being exposed for several days while marooned).
This movie has the perfect combination of action, humor and actually still having meaning to it. It's fun and funny but it's also deeper than that.
blockbuster movies back in the early 2000s could still have themes and heart to them as well as being spectacles and funny. Not to say movies like that don't exist anymore but so many big summer blockbuster movies now just feel so soulless.
You guys are going to love this movie! This whole franchise is so much fun! Davey Jones is one of the coolest Disney characters ever created. Love that Bill Nighy voices him.
Agreed, Bill Nighy is fantastic in these movies.
'Why is the rum gone?!'
Best line ever.
35:10-35:12
She called that man "Bootleg Bill" 😂😂😂😂😂
Lmfao!!!!!
😂 I saw this about 10 times in cinema and countless of times on DVD❤
I know it by heart, word for word, but it never gets boring
My sister had a huge crush on Johnny Depp at the time(she was 12), we literally saw this movie 11x that summer 😅
14:30 The Mythbusters actually did test this movie myth. It's BUSTED, they would not have the strength/weight to hold that much air under water without the boat being lifted up and being seen.
The reason that Jack Sparrow runs like he’s wasted is because he is so accustomed to a ship that he is in a permanent state of sea legs😂😂
Especially Eisner. That guy was the epitome of train wrecks.
These first 3 are great because the cast interaction works vell well together ,after the first 3 not so great
True. But the 4th one has its moments. The 5th one was horrible. Even Johnnys acting was...well...not as it usually is (which is understandable imo) but they changed his hole backstory etc... The writers messed up completely in the last one
4:55 - "How many coffees have you had?" - I WAS ABOUT TO ASK THAT SAME QUESTION lol!!
Ash “ you don’t know what you’re talking about” Hannah “oh”
This one was one of the best ones in the franchise. Johnny Depp plays Jack Sparrow very well.
Myth busters did the boat underwater air pocket thingy
It works in principle, and it’s easy to see how: get a cup, turn it upside down, and try to shove it under water.
Ash, please do react to the rest of the *_Pirates Of The Caribbean_* movie series.
You will not be disappointed! Captain Jack Sparrow is a damn *LEGEND!*
This franchise is awesome. Captain Jack Sparrow along with the other characters and world that’s introduced in this movie are so fun. Can’t wait for y’all to react to the sequel, it’s my favorite 🤘🏽
You can try the boat thing with an empty jar and a bigger vessel of water. Turn the jar upside-down and check if you can keep dry something taped at the bottom of the jar, while inserting the jar into the vessel of water.
A good movie i'd recommend is "Dog Soldiers".
Probably the best and most iconic werewolf movie.
Omg yes gonna love these movie especially jack sparrow imo he’s one of best fictional characters made
For the drunk thing , Yeah there's a bit of that but he also has spent his life at sea so always has sea legs. :) Great reaction can't wait for more !
14:34 we also just had a necklace send friggin brain waves 🤣
It’s amazing how good the CGI was on this 20+ year old movie compared to the CGI now. It’s like the technology has gone backwards. I watched Jungle Cruise (2021) which is another film based on a Disney theme park ride, and was pissed at how bad the CGI was. It’s ridiculous.
Technology has made movie making “ lazy”.
After watching jack sparrow step off in Port Royal, you will never get off an escalator the same way again
this movie is such a delight it was so nice to see ash and hannah reacting to it for the first time
Johnny Depp has been in so so many films. Good films. Great films. But there’s always that one role, that one character portrayal that you’re forever known for & Cpt Jack Sparrow is that character for Johnny Depp.
So ready for this series... Love y'all's reactions. Since I found you, been one of my top go to channels for reactions!
As far as the shows poll, I commented there, but Arcane would be an amazing show you guys to watch. I really think you would love it. Also The Walking Dead could be good for y'all as well. Looking forward to future content Ash! Let's get some symbolisms goin
I love that the second movie addresses immediately the repercussions of having such a fairytale ending of the first movie. Also, it’s my favorite in the series so I can’t wait for y’all to see it 🙏
You guys are the best reaction Channel. Reacting to so many banging franchises, you guys should do the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
There is a big character backstory between Becket and Jack Sparrow in a deleted scene of the second film. Or the first one.. react to that as a youtube short if thsts the only option but its an important scene where it explains how he got branded because of his successful attempted to free a boat full of slaves. But it wasnt shown in the released film but the scene was just so perfect.
This is gonna be a fun franchise to reexperience this franchise with y'all!
one of the best swashbuckling movies of all time. up there with 30s robin hood, captain blood, princess bride, etc.
I just figured it out... Ash is Tim Roth's Persian cousin.
Fun fact: Johnny Depp based his character in Keith Richards from The Rolling Stones
I got to disagree with you again. The ending isn't disappointing. You always get to hung up on the ending. This story is a Trilogy. You'll understand by the end. And don't just watch the first 3, watch them all
'Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas' is also a great Johnny Depp movie, my favourite
“You’re not even there with a bra strap yet” sent me 😂 You guys are hilarious
Can't wait for #2 and #4😂😂
I’ll never stop loving these movies.
Honestly, expected Ash to dress up as Depp for this one
Next one..
Dead Man’s Chest when?
The initial trilogy is so great. The 2nd and 3rd build on the lore and have some great character development. Not as much of the "fairytale" aspect you guys critiqued a bit in regards to the ending of this one. The third one is my personal favorite. There's a scene that is just...truly epic in multiple ways, and one of the most beautiful romantic scores written for a movie I've ever heard.
It’s a shame the sequels don’t match up to this one because this one is just top tier. First one by far and away the best imo. Hope you guys love it
all the sequels are good except the 4th movie
I agree the first one's the best. I did really liked the 3rd one though. I think parts of it have surprising depth (mostly parts rooted in history).
Although my favorite is at worlds end, first one is the better movie for sure
I feel like the first one was better because it had a tighter focus. The only paranormal thing was the cursed treasure, so we as an audience knew the rules and could get invested. In the sequels it gets a bit nuts and there are all sorts of different elements getting thrown in every five minutes. They're still fun and a great spectacle, but the first one is the superior film.
Dead Man's Chest is the best Pirates movie.
I lost count how many times I went to see this in the theater. It was well over 20. Obsessed!! And still love watching them. Glad you enjoyed it!
Aaahh yes! 🎉
I just rewatched parts 1 to 5 a couple weeks, absolutely love it. 🎉❤
Have fun guys 😊
Before Johnny got dropped there was a fan theory that Witty Jack was an avatar of the Trickster God...which makes sense given his relationship with Calypso.
It's a pirate's life for you two, savvy?
This January 4, the Spanish director J. Bayona premiered Society of the snow on Netflix. An incredible feat of survival. I saw it in the cinema, Bayona is the master of intimacy and realism. The story is about the rugby team that fell in the Andes Mountains in the 70s, it's an excellent film! Please check it in the original language.
