I find a few minutes massage of my legs, calves and front of thighs helps relieve the feeling enough to go to sleep. If I've been driving a lot of hours I get restless legs and it is really agrivating.

I have had RLS for most of my adult life, (I am almost 73) and I have found that there are 2 things in my diet that will trigger it big time, too much salt, and too much sugar especially after 6PM. Antihistamines are problematic also. B1 does help and I take 500 mgs of magnesium before bed…I am currently trying this new Restful Legs PM that is supposed to help RLS, the jury is still out on that one. I have been to the edge of the cliff at times and have often gotten up and marched in place for hours trying to relieve it, I sometimes get it in my arms and you feel like you just want to jump out of your skin. People who have never experienced this cannot understand, but it is real and they still don’t really know what causes it. I like reading the comments and I very much appreciate this video. The exercises are great.

I hope you find something that gives you complete relief, I’m 59 and still looking for a sure fire but when it’s really bad I use the small Salonpas patches. Depending where it’s worse I put them behind my knees or the back of my ankles just behind the ankle bone. I have not found a B1 that doesn’t give me a really bad upset stomach even with food.

I take magnesium glycinate daily and don't experience restless legs as often as I used to. However on occasion, it flares up when I have to ride in the car for long periods of time. I'm grateful for the exercises, as I believe I can do a version of them while being a car passenger. Thanks for posting this. I used to suffer with this issue almost daily, some times more severely so than others. I wish I'd known all this back then, but it'll be a huge help going forward!

I often have difficulty driving because of having to keep my accelerator foot on the pedal. I a, very short, with my limbs being primarily where I’m shortest. So when I drive, I can only sit so close to the steering wheel, which means my right leg is pretty much fully extended, holding my foot on the accelerator. Unfortunately, I end up frequently lifting my foot briefly off the pedal. Fortunately, my husband does most of the driving!

I've have had Restless Legs for 67 years and I can tell you. When it occurred mostly laying down it was due to cool air and/or ceiling air on my legs. I MUST to get out of bed and walk. I keep a light pillow over my calves and keep them warm, when that doesn't work and they cramp so bad I have to walk it off, I take Magnesium 400gm 1 pill and it take up to 30 minutes, then I am good. I do take Requip/Ropinirole, which absolutely works when it will not stop, but I hate taken drugs and am not on any medication at all. Support knee high socks works well when you have to walk alot. I played Semi-Pro Softball in my younger years and was always on the move. I do eat the right foods but cold and cold air hurts me most, just saying.

Great video! I’ve had RLS for about five years now and have to take prescription meds which don’t work if I take them right before bed. So I take them a couple of hours ahead of time and also potassium supplements and that cocktail works 75% of the time. I’ll definitely try this oil or the cream that someone else has suggested in the comments to avoid the itchiness. Unfortunately, I also get RLS in my arms, and I’m not sure which is worse because sometimes I just want to throw my arms against the wall. Benadryl can definitely aggravate RLS in my system. I appreciate all the comments and how all of you have figured out how to live with this and I’m sure some of you dread going to sleep at night as I do or even when you relax to watch TV for a few hours in the laying down position without having the interference of RLS. It is a carbonated drink normally used to make mixed drinks like gin and tonic. You can find ot at the grocery, Walmart with the other drink mizers like Margherita or Bloody Mary Mixes. Just make sure the tonic water says "with quinine"...because some are made without it now. Quinine is the active ingredient that makes it work for RLS. Thanks Doc so much for the advice. I will give everything you suggested a try. I'm 62 and have had RLS for about 15 years. I'm not as severe as others from what I've read in the comments. I have noticed a strong connection between how much physical work I do during the day to how bad my RLS is on that night. I've noticed that if I do some lifting or any work that puts a strain on my spine then that evening my RLS is much worse. There could be a correlation between load on the spinal column and spinal cord to how bad the RLS is. It may be linked to nerves in the spine. It's just a thoery thats worth exploring. However I do also strongly believe that there is definitely a connection to certain vitamin and mineral deficiency as the Doc mentioned.

If I didn’t have the amount of relief I do get from medications, I honestly would not want to live. Many people have told me they also have RLS, but they don’t. • @-jadi-
      @-jadi- 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah same, not painful as such, more of a mental pain as you're supposed to cease movement and relax at sleep time n with rls the more you do try to relax the more it will drive you crazy. I imagine that it would be similar to a symptom that addicts withdrawing off drugs would feel. Like a ticklish feeling in your legs n sometimes arms. Like a thousand ants crawling around your body. I feel bad for my partner sleeping next to me as often ill have the entire bed shaking, as my leg HAS to shake - its not voluntarily- you still have to put the work in n yes it gets tiring, but you'd rather it feel tired than that tickle feeling n when it is also in your arms, that's even worse. I bought a vibrating seat cover, I lay on that in bed n it helps, or I use a massage gun n keep it vibrating on the trigger spots, keep it on there until that tickle feeling goes, it enhances the yuk tickle feeling at first but you feel it start to not tickle as much after a minute or 2. Keep it massaging all around the pin points for about 5 or 10 mins - sometimes longer - but it's so worth it, as you'll find afterwards you no longer have it. It's so relieving by that point, as you just want to sleep. Desperate measures are no to no end. I am anemic n have low iron, n I think that is linked with rls. I first had it in a the last few weeks of my 3rd pregnancy, which went after baby was born. Then 10 years later, ( and a couple of pregnancies without it) which was 5 years ago it started again just out of the blue.

Rub apple vinegar on your legs and drink it. You’re can eat a dill pickle or drink some of the juice. It will stop cramps in about 20 seconds. Rubbing it on the muscle is best. Apply a heating pad to the area that is cramping and/or take an aspirin, if you are able. This helps and will stop the cramps for the night. The Amish make a concoction which can be applied or drunk which will stop cramps. The only difference is they add garlic to the mixture. It is a bit pricey, so I do the above instead. It works as well.

@@WisconsinEric After a very quick search, I found a study from U of Exeter. They found that topical (transdermal) magnesium increases serum magnesium levels, "and may provide an alternative to oral supplementation."
Several articles from the Nat'l Library of Medicine show that hospitals use intravenous magnesium for acute asthma. Other studies find it of benefit in chronic asthma also, as it is both an anti-inflammatory and a bronchodilating agent. The use of magnesium for asthma is also referred to in the "British Guideline on the Management of Asthma."
Put this info together and, to me, it looks like topical magnesium, which can be applied to the torso (as they did in the transdermal mag study), is a really good choice for us asthmatics!

For me, it's helpful to simply raise my legs pointing to the roof, holding a few seconds, lowering the legs, waiting a few seconds and then repeating this over a few times. I think it helps with the circulation. I've also done the first one you showed here as it just felt it helped a bit. The most helpful thing has been to stand up and walk around a bit, but it pushes me awake too much, so I prefer to do the "easier" things first. By the way, taking vitamin D supplements without magnesium can deplete magnesium in the body.

    • @fintux

@@chuckbeedle1983 being a doctor doesn't automatically grant you all wisdom on a topic, and not being a doctor doesn't mean you don't know about something. But there are several studies on the topic, and some people think this is the key reason why vitamin D supplements don't bring as big of a relief to vitamin D deficiency that has been believed. Banana is not a *vitamin D supplement* that I was referring to in my comment. It is not even a vitamin D source. So I am not quite sure why are you even bringing them to the conversation. What I said simply was that if you take vitamin D supplements but do not have enough magnesium in your diet (as a supplement or naturally), magnesium levels in your body may be depleted.
I of course do not recommend simply taking everything in TH-cam comments as facts. But I also do not recommend being really sappy because somebody wrote a comment based on information in medical publications, and it wasn't immediately clear to you how the person knows what they are saying. Ask politely or google the next time, please.
Here is a citation from one article in a medical journal: "Mg is essential in the metabolism of vitamin D, and taking large doses of vitamin D can induce severe depletion of Mg. Adequate magnesium supplementation should be considered as an important aspect of vitamin D therapy", published in American Journal of Therapeutics." For me it was the third Google search result with seach keywords "magnesium vitamin d".

I make my magnesium oil with magnesium chloride, and mineral oil. It keeps the skin from drying out. I also, take magnesium Glycinate around 6 pm every day, along with B vitamins and and good quality natural source multivitamin. Also, good job on these recommended exercises!

I’ve had rls for over 20 years and it’s now spread to every joint from my shoulders to my ankles. I unusually have it every night and end up sleeping on the couch. After a while I’m so exhausted that I finally fall asleep. I haven’t found anything that works for me

It typically occurs at the nap hour, and if you are in an environment whereby the room conserves heat too well, then the best approach is adapting is a before nap time workout ethic routine of your choice for an hour and also remember to keep the dry air out during the summer the best way you know how or winter time using the thermo control with the "fan" control setting on "auto" fan setting simultaneously and not "on". Dry fan air will dissipate at auto setting, and it's good for the lungs when you do your work out in your room at night and before bed. That's my conclusion and cure after 38+ years, too. It is the average age experience I've noticed. Human evolution wasn't meant for energy saving high-tech rooms, which trap dry air in rather to the contrary outdoor experience. Who even gets cured off of restless leg syndrome on a couch rather than outdoors doing stuff and then napping in the forest somewhere. I am serious about this. It's a cure on my behalf in every season of the year and counting. My time for a workout is at the midnightght mark to 1am. It is too cold outside to open windows and dangerous too. unpredictable too if you live with your loved ones.

I have horrible RLS in my arms and calves. What helps me is soaking my legs knee deep in cold water for several minutes. Recently I also feel the urge to massage them with a pointy and sharp massage roller, but haven't found such a thing on the market yet. I can't believe how science is not able to find a cure or a reason for treating this horrible condition. I hope it will be achieved in my lifetime! Amen

He's been suffering about 20 yrs or so, he doesn't get much sleep and no medication out there helping. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I also ordered the magnesium oil spray and hoping he'll get some relief. Thank you Dr Rowe.

Now I take magnesium, I rarely get RLS, but when I do, it's intense. But one thing I find helpful, even though my legs aren't itchy, is to use E45 itch relief cream. It's like the cooling sensation of it lasts long enough to break the cycle. But I also find it helpful to stretch my calves & feet & rotate my foot while also stretching it. For some reason, it's worse in my right leg than my left.

I will try these suggestions. I have had restless leg syndrome for 15 years. It is so bad that I am on a drug called Meripex. I have had to increase the dose over the years. I am concerned with being on this drug so long. I understand the person above saying they dread going to bed. If I don’t take the drug 2 hours before bed and it makes me drowsy. Any further suggestions are welcomed.

you've got to be kidding. I've done all that. I have been writhing on the floor and in tears with the pain from RLS. I have gone 2 days/nights without sleep when its been bad. These exercises make me almost laugh in situation like mine and no, there are no underlying other causes for this at least for me. Its not supposed to be heriditary but most of the women in one side of my family have suffered from it. It feels like rats running up my legs and tugging on every nerve and fibre.

I'm replying to my own entry. I didn't think anyone would comment on my entry. Honestly, sometimes I wish I could cut my legs off. Anyway, I did order the magnesium oil and we'll see if that helps. I don't know how many people have RLS as bad as I do. I don't think even my Dr.'s realize how badly I suffer. It is a very lonely ailment to have when no one understands
