The Chevy Colorado ZR2 is Better than a Toyota Tacoma

- 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 review by The Straight Pipes. The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss is putting down 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque from a Turbo 2.7L 4 cylinder. At $74,613 CAD, would you take it over the Toyota Tacoma, GMC Canyon AT4X, Ford Ranger Raptor?

Let’s see how that title ages.
Because you know the future and how reliable the new Tacoma will be? Get off Toyota’s shaft.
@@billshoe22191I’d ride Toyota’s shaft for the rest of my life if it meant I didn’t have to own a Chevy 😅
The Colorado beats the Tacoma in all the other categories, no reason to assume it won’t beat it in popularity and reliability 10 years from now.
My first truck was a Yota and i’m a Taco fan, but Chevy takes the W on this one.
@@redhotbillypeppers"No reason" to assume Toyota would have better reliability than Chevy? Wow... Dim
@@svalbard01exactly. It’s safe to assume that Toyota will produce more reliable vehicles than just about any other brand.
I like it! Crazy power from 4 cylinder turbos nowadays. Juri taking off while Jakub was trying to get the plastic film off didnt work out like he had hoped lol, funny though.
the 4x4 " Auto" mode on GM trucks is by far the most underrated, most amazing mode switching feature on ANY 4x4 truck... and why most reviewers don't dig deeper into what its so good, and how crazy that other manufacturers don't do it, is something that will never make sense to me.
It's why I won't switch.
This. I think it’s because many don’t realize just how seamless it is until using it for an extended period of time. I owned my ZR2 for over a year before giving it a real try and realizing its capability. Do the other manufacturers have no Auto 4x4 whatsoever?
@@drsus0 You think a Chevy Trax is a 4x4?
no, I meant to say trailblazer and had the trax in my head since I was going to talk about traction control down the road.
did you think I was talking about he 2023 trax? @@phillipsmith1489 the topic is Auto 4WD/Awd that GM has had in the vehicles for years... including 2022 Trax and prior ;)
$75 grand lol.
What? If you think it’s expensive, you should better your career.
That is expensive
@@carsonfarmer1074 If you think it’s expensive then maybe you should better your career. $75k is nothing.
@@DeepDishPizza the average income in US is like 41k. Dude just trying to flex lmao. Nobody cares, 75 grand is a lot and most would agree.
@@DeepDishPizza ur the type of dude to say, "how are you homeless? Just buy a house."
The Tacoma has been dominant for so long. It is great to see the Colorado & Ranger fight back with some fun truck options. I have owned many Toyotas and will only daily drive Toyotas, but man, the ZR2 Colorado & Ranger Raptor are so tempting...I just hope Toyota finds a way to make equally fun trucks at a reasonable price. Truck prices are wildly high!
Why are people overpaying on trucks. Especially for half a truck. They are charging as much as a 3/4 ton. People that buy them are the reason prices are staying so high.
Because they are dumb. Just like this video on how much they need a bigger engine but never use the truck for what it's purpose.
You would save 12k and arguably have a better truck if you just got the regular ZR2
You want extreme capability, you PAY TO PLAY.
Trucks start in the low 30s if you don't want/need capability.
Do you complain about the price of a Corvette? LOL
Same people who complain about prices probably never buys new and then complain about the lack of amenities for a cheaper truck but don't want to pay more for the it either. A person can save a few thousand on a used truck but and that's probably their best solution.
Keep it up, super car nerd here and love your reviews. I know you didn’t get to take this off-road to compare but what do you think… Colorado zr2 or gladiator rubicon?
The AT4 seats look like the time travel suits the Avengers wore in End Game.
That's what Yuri said when they reviewed the AT4 a couple months ago
Beautiful vehicle. Unfortunately it's got serious electrical issues. Soooo many owners complaining online about this. I personally would not even consider this vehicle until year 3 or 4 in its cycle, and even then I would still buy a Tacoma.
Welcome to Chevy, i wouldn't count on it being actually fixed for a very long time. My company buys chevy trucks for our salesmen and even though all they do is drive around with maybe 4-500lbs of load their entire life they constantly have electrical and mechanical issues, don't think a month has gone by without 1 of the Colorados being in the shop
Serious electrical issues is an exaggeration. The battery issue has been corrected with an OTA update. What other issues (plural) can you name? Stop spreading lies.
@@krasnaludek298 If you did any research at all, you will know that the infotainment system is an absolute inconsistent wreck. Errors, screens not turning on at all (unrelated to battery), bricking entirely. Plus random electrical issues like the driver and back right passenger window not going down, but the front passenger and back left passenger windows working fine. You being uneducated in the situation does not equal someone spreading "lies". Educate yourself.
I dislike trucks, but it's Japan or bust for me if I was forced to buy one.
@@krasnaludek298 TFLTrucks posted a video of their Colorado having electrical issues, i mean all you have to do is google Chevy Colorado Electrical issues and u can see hundreds of reddit/forum posts of people complaining about their Colorado having various electrical problems
🔥🔥Great Job Guys🔥🔥
Toyota fanboys aren't gonna like that title.
Love my 2023 ZR2. Fit/finish outstanding, solid. The 2.7LI4T is a BEAST (this coming from one who grew up with GM V8s). Avg >20mgp city w/ Blizzaks (winter); less with MTs. Paid $58K out-the-door with TT&L. Excellent value given ZR2's capability, which is on par with Jeep Rubicon, the only other truck with rear and FRONT lockers.
Pair that with the fact that the Rubicon rides and looks like a brick, and still has the prehistoric solid front end plus an absolute crap interior
I have a ZR2 and absolutely LOVE this truck. The absolute only argument Toyota fan boys have is reliability. They even know that everything else about the truck is better on this haha
Same here. It's interesting the 2022 Colorado had a HIGHER JD Power score compared to Taco LOL
@@docholliday6285big difference in initial quality and long term reliability.
Toyota interior is so outdated
@@jasonmartin7453 yea even the 2024 just doesn't do it the same as the others. All the buttons look like they're made for old people. There aren't symbols on the buttons just huge words like FAN and LOCKER haha
Jakub can get his V8 Colorado (and Canyon) right now as GM offered one in the first gen truck (GMT355 2009-2012). Would love to see one on the channel!
We have come a long way from my s10 crew cab ZR5.
Yes the S10 cab in a crew cab off road model. (I use off road term lightly). It broke a lot.
Loved them...had 3. A 97,99 and 02. Mine never broke and even back then could out perform most half tons in the dirt.
People have definitely noticed the protective films, they've just been adults about it and left it on because they don't own the vehicle and that film serves a purpose.
You guys are awesome as always, but there is one thing you can’t get on the Colorado that you can on the Canyon…heads up display
Mustard is a must on hotdogs. I’m down for relish or pickled jalapeños and hot sauce too.
It took so long to get mine, I ordered it in February and got it at the end of September
It's called supply and demand. And the UAW strike only delayed things further.
Hi there! blessings from Dominican Republic, I like all your videos and I though I was subscribed to the channel. I just did it. Would you please include the Carr dimensions in both inches and mm? thanks.
Nice review nice truck
Pro tip: A1 and swiss on a hamburger. Add accoutrements as wanted or keep it clean - your choice, either is delicious. Also, I put A1 into the ground beef as I'm shaping the patties - keeps things flavorful and juicy. And finally, no - I do not prefer A1 with steak because [everyone say it with me] a good steak doesn't need any sauce.
I realized I was becoming my dad when I stopped putting ketchup on my hotdogs. I still enjoy it on a burger but I agree with Yuri on the hotdogs having mustard relish.
The pure fear in your face when he ripped that plastic off......hilarious 😂
Break it you buy it 😂
The powertrain is way better this time around. That engine was designed for use in the much heavier Silverado 1500 base models so it handles the smaller chassis so well.
its gimped for the mid size unfortunately
It makes the same power as the Half ton
@@zelix5 No it's not. There are 3 tiers, TurboMax is an option on all of them. That's the same engine as Silverado gets.
The middle Turbo+ tier can be updated to the Max for a couple hundred bucks.
@@VortexArcade no, there is a engineering break down video of the motor, where they describe for one I remember that there are less oil squirters in the midsize version
@@VortexArcade see the video by TDTV Garage. That’s a big negative feature compared to full size
I don’t know what the opposite of ASMR is, but the quick tear of the protective plastic on the infotainment reminds me of those tear off protectors on motor cross goggles.
So crazy, I shit you not.....I was scrolling and reading all the comments, and when I got to this one, it was the exact time in the video he ripped off the plastic screen cover!
Funny how toyota never feels the need to compare. That speaks mountains in itself.
Obviously not the same but I had a 2021 Colorado Zr2 and loved that truck but the amount of electrical issues it had was annoying. In the year that I owned it, it was in the dealership for about a month for nine separate repairs. Kept throwing airbag lights.
Anecdotal, but I have an early 2017 Colorado ZR2--first year it was built--that I bought new. Aside from a variable valve timing sensor glitch that was fixed under warranty, the only real issue I've had with it is my thermostat started failing around 105,000 mi. I changed it with my first coolant flush. I have not been kind to the truck and regularly beat it up in the desert, and it's still going.
Yes please on the Raptor curb story
The suits references amazing
Love the new Colorados 👍🏼
I love my 23 Colorado LT, I wish they offered the 3.0L diesel in it. The 4 cylinder makes more power then the small V8 and the big wouldn’t fit.
I bought the GMC Canyon AT4X. It’s a pretty awesome truck.
Better than a Tacoma until it breaks down, or until you find out what the resale value it is vs. the Tacoma.
This comment aged terribly
There are some electrical probs(software related) but the powertrain is proving to be good by some owners. Ofcourse its still new and only time will tell...
The powertrain has been in the Silverado since 2019 and it’s had plenty of revisions and has been pretty problem free
Is there some regulatory issue to explain why the switch won't raise all four windows?
You’re kidding right?
Yes .. had a similar feature (passenger control) on my Olds .. it's so kids can't lop one another's arms off.
mustard and onions - nice vid, thanks
Lol you know your from canada when-- "ketchup on a hamburger? Blegh" 😂😂
I have this dessert boss for sale in McKinney TX
I don't understand why the backseats on this smaller trucks are still small, they have gotten bigger but the same interior space.
My brother in law has a ZR2 Bison, great car, getting a new engine at 60k
"better than a Tacoma" from Savagegeese means beefier underpinnings. From these guys it means Apple Car play and contrast stitching
the question is how many miles will it take before the transmission gives up? I say below 60K
Can it take e85 like the Tahoe?
So a little confused, is the bison edition worth it?
I think so. Because then you get 35” tires and hydraulic bump stops and useful AEV stuff. But yes it’s $1000 more than the Desert Boss package on the ‘23. Plus I think it looks better
Bro good truck
hot dog: mustard, relish
hamburger: mustard, ketchup
I have an older colorado zr2 with the diesel... the shocks make the truck... don't get me started about the motor reliability however..... 😢
Best Colorado color
Mustard on the seat belts?
Reliability among major brands is negligible these days; the data proves as much. Anybody that’s bagging on GM quality is exhibiting BIAS & also SPECULATING on future performance. Toyota has had a considerable volume of recalls per units sold, so these 🤡 opinions can roll like water.
GM has produced plenty of durable models and Toyota as well. They’ve also both produced complete dogs. The latest Tundra was riddled with problems & now holds last place in sales with the Nissan Titan departing the segment.
Beautiful truck. Idk about "better" though, its definitely more truck for the money.
My taco have 450000 miles and still driving it with no issues 💪
Let see if Chevy can make 100000 miles with out of major problems 😂😅😂
My dad just paid 90.000$ for a canyon denali lol then took the stock running boards off and ordered electric running boards for an additional 4000$ and also a 2000$ tonneau cover. It’s only money
To answer your question gmc was solely created to sell upscale trucks and SUV’s on Buick lots. That’s why they make the same truck but with different appointments.
Love the look of the new Colorado…but not enough to give up my 2.8L Duramax Colorado
BUT the diesel is LAME with it's 181hp...that was a deal-breaker for me. GLAD I waited for 2023, as the 2.7I4T has MORE HP & TORQUE compared to Babymax. A lot more.
low end torque develops at 2k RPM...and 40 highway MPG with stock setup ain't bad @@docholliday6285
The AT4X has the HUD.
They better but get rid of cliche corner.
It's such a fun road to rip on.
Damn city expanding....
Great video as always guys
Time will tell about the decision to replace cubic inches with turbo’s…especially on aluminum engines
Leaf Springs? I could never.
Zs use to be all over the place when they came out
Now I never see them maybe they all broke down??
I see them everywhere here in Trump Country.
What tires did that truck have in the video?
Some winters that aren’t Continental
Can’t find any winter tires that are 33’s. Would love to know what those are since I’m moving to Alaska soon
Well let's wait for the trd pro to actually release. In my opinion these trucks are way too damn slow to compete with something the ranger raptor. I mean the raptor does sub 6 0-60 while this is like 7.8 which is ridiculous lol.
Not to mention the fuel efficiency of this is hardly better than the full size f150 raptor
Great looking truck, but as with almost all new Chevy's they're nothing but problems. I'm not sure how GM quality on their trucks has gotten so bad. I really wanted a Silverado ZR2, but way too many issues with these new trucks for me to bother with them.
If the burger and cheese is near perfect in flavor, you don’t need any sauce
I wish they would've kept the LGZ 3.6.
I’d buy one if they put the 6.2 in it
The Transmission says otherwise
No ketchup on 🌭
A1 & mayo is great on 🍔
Much prefer the look of the Chevy over the GMC. Never really saw the point of GM selling 19 of the same vehicles with different levels of plastic.
The piano black looks a mess. Pickup trucks have gotten hugely expensive. I like this one better without that package. With all that being said unless you’re a shortie this is essentially an El Camino or SSR. Doesn’t meet my needs but looks really cool on the outside.
Big grey poupon on the burger fella
Hell yeah
Toyota didn't know it was a race
Like.. every new generation of vehicle is just “how much more of an appliance can we make our vehicles look like?”
Great that you dont have that opening voice over already...

Nothing will ever be better than the Tacoma.
I like my new Colorado more than any Tacoma I’ve driven
GM IS ALLWAYS BETTER THEN TOYOTA, TOYOTA IS TRASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anything is better than a tacoma. The transmission and the engine fight until one of them goes kaboom

Engine and suspension and interior quality
Yeah but you had a base TRD off road. @@TheStraightPipes

That's a fair point. Interior quality you can probably get an accurate gauge on, but it's not really fair to compare the ZR2 suspension to the TRD OR one. And doesn't the TRD Pro come with a more powerful engine anyway? @@Mycameron2323@thestraightpipes

@@2011buddylee if it does well, there's no way they're going to pass up on an opportunity especially since it'll be going against the Tacoma and Colorado.
The title should be “The features of a Chevrolet Colorado are better than a Tacoma (but reliability is not)” 😂
The Tacoma reliability is actually pretty concerning now that it offers a turbo 4 cylinders hybrid and no more V6 or even an NA 4 cylinder.
@@jonanthonylosito2004 that's why I'm gonna keep my 2023 v6 taco and not get the new 4 cylinder turbo. Since it's a new power train, the old 4 cylinder/6 are proven power trains.
@@jonanthonylosito2004 Yeah, it’s pretty sad. Value of the pre-2024 Tacomas is gonna go through the roof.
@@jonanthonylosito2004The fact that you think a turbo 4 cylinder from a company that has been making reliable turbo 4 cylinders for YEARS doesn’t make sense man.
All these new 4 cylinder turbo motors are being spec’d to diesel standards. The new Tacoma is for sure turned down from factory since Toyota goes over the top with being conservative. It could probably hit similar numbers as the zr2 on a baby tune, and still be reliable. Wouldn’t turn that ZR2 up because it’s already hitting 27psi of boost from the factory. Even then, the point of failure of the ZR2 isn’t the 4cyl turbo, it’s Chevy’s inability to fix design flaws like sensors or transmission issues without gaslighting customers that it’s working as intended or it isn’t covered under warranty after charging diagnostic fee for vehicles still under warranty.
Mayo on hamburger crowd got left out 😢
Can't even hold the payload it says it can. Meanwhile people stuffing Tacoma's way over the payload.
Let’s talk in 10 years.
Bought a 94 s10 extended cab 4x4 new in 94 for 11,900....sold it in 2019 for 5k....

No long bed, no extended cab, no Chevy.
Bizon edition? You mean bison edition?
Me too i think the canyon /colorado is a better truck than the tacoma
No catsup on a burger. Or mayo, ever.
Better? In ten years how many of these will still be on the road versus the Toyota?
I hope chevy paid VERY well for that title because this is going to upset a lot of your demographic.
Bro the Canadaian commercial advertise this as ZR2 not a zzzr2 this is upsetting me and a Canadian
I have this truck in the normal ZR2 flavor, it’s a nice truck with some minor software glitches. If they slap a 10 speed and up the power by 20hp it’ll be a great truck. I like it so much that I have a Bison edition on the way.

YURI couldn't agree more! Ketchup is so overrated. Mustard and relish are the condiment goats
I hate the new Tacoma for its cartoonish bro-dozer styling and its 4-cylinder turbo but long term it will crush the ZR2. GM trucks have a horrifying track record for reliability. Side note - I just purchased a new Nissan Frontier specifically for its naturally aspirated V6. Turbo 4’s are an immediate “no sale” for me. You’ll never see space shuttle miles out of ANY 4-pot turbo.
This car has auto start/stop, I saw the button. Does the Tacoma?
Why wouldn't the Colorado be priced to be a 25k truck. All these cool trucks now days are only affordable if you make 300k per yr. Housing and taxes are double from 5 or 6 years ago. We need affordable options with a V6 or V8. Don't need any computer or touch screen.
Glad this boss package is a one time deal. Bison is far more exciting and capable especially compared to this add-on junk package.
Trying not be bias as possible but that title is not accurate, I had a 2019 Chevy Colorado that had transmission issues and the dealership could not fix it at all and sent corporate technicians to examine it. Chevy’s off road line ups are cool and aggressive looking but one will still be running and it’s not Chevy.
