The ZR2 trim is Chevy's top off-road focused version for their trucks. The refreshed mid-sized Colorado gets this treatment bringing more capable 33" tires, suspension lift, Multimatic DSSV dampers, skid plates, more aggressive bodywork and more! We have spent time with all the regular trims of the Colorado and also taken the platform sibling GMC Canyon AT4X off-roading, so this time we spent some time living with the 2023 Colorado ZR2 as a regular day-to-day truck to see what it is like in the real world!

I own a 2024 Colorado Z71 and I've been very impressed with it so far.
Hi hope you enjoy the truck still! I am considering buying a z71 but really worried about the recent issue I saw about the truck. How reliable is the electrical system in your mind of this truck?
@@jianhengwen1216 I have not had a single issue with my Colorado's electrical systems. Truck has been trouble free since purchased.
That's good, but reliability has to be assessed over time. I'd be interested to hear about reliability after 75,000 or more miles.@@Road-wx9ok
I am 6’2 and still growing and this has been my dream truck so knowing that you are 6’3 and sit very comfortably in the zr2 makes me really happy so thank you, I’m dropping a sub
I just got my Zr2 and im 6'4 and sit comfortable.
Im 6’2 and want this but my wife and kids keep telling me I need the bigger truck. But I want this!
@@SirScottlandYou can get full size for a little more that are descent but i did not want to have a daily driver full size at all.. best bang for the buck for nice midsize trucks.
@@SirScottland Man, I get you. My wife wants a full size truck even though she is like 5'4" because when we tow we use our '21 Ranger Tremor. Always comparing it to her Pilot. I don't want to go full size but since my 50k mile Ranger is in the shop for a possible engine, I was looking at the ZR2, AT4 and Ranger Raptor should they do a bad repair on the truck. I dont get why GMC would use white in the AT4X interior.....RIP with Utah orange sand.
@@thomasmathews8558 Yeah, a run of the mill full size for a little more, all the fun full size are $70k and up now! Even then, I would not want to daily drive a Raptor, ZR2 Silverado or AT4X Sierra. Living in Vegas, casino parking, hockey practice parking, too many parking structures to make things a pain. Yes, I can, used to drive a large work van as a tech but dont want to.
Something most people don't mention are the cooled seats. As most mid sized trucks don't have them and in the South it's a great option to have.
Forced induction for your balls
I went to look at one of these today, they are very cool in person and the only reason I even thought of looking at one is because the 6g ranger doesn't have ventilated seats in the lariat trim and that is 51k with the towing package and 4x4. I have a ranger now and it *was* the best midsize truck at the time (21) but the new generation just left so much out that other ranger markets already have (cooled diamond stitched seats , moonroof, diesel torque, more trims, tremor trim) that i am seriously considering switching brands. And the raptor would be nice but these greedy dealerships are a joke, they want 15k markup on the raptor ranger which is BARELY worth 57k at msrp, and ranger sales are shit anyways that the might discontinue again.
@davidd8892 I'm going to install aftermarket air cooled ones soon in my midsize, they definitely dropped the ball rite there
@@ktcjosh yea they did considering they already manufacture the damn things for every other market
Yow! I live in northern Canada so heated seats are more important to me ;-)
I bought a Z71 about a month ago! 42,000, I am 6’2, it has 44 in of leg room love the head and leg room! That’s the first thing I look for! I drove all of them the Chevy rides the best, coming from an older Tundra it’s a nice size! able to park it any were! So far happy with 21.5 mpg, plenty of power,
I opted for the Colorado ZR2 Bison package and I'm very satisfied. It builds on everything from the ZR2 and adds steel bumpers, capability to add a winch, really beefy tow points and of course even more life than the ZR2 in order to support 35" tires. It's also fun to drive no matter where I am going.
Good to hear. I'm getting one too, just been a pain to find the color I want, possibly have to order it.
@moreaufamily437 too bad they couldn't find the money to gear it properly.
3:43 gears with 35 inch tires is preposterous.
Backseat is perfect for a lunch box or maybe a backpack. It is indeed though, the absolute COOLEST LOOKING truck on the market, hands down. If I was single, would be nice to have. Sat in one over Christmas, being 6'3" 230 lbs and in a huge jacket (was below 0) was a bit tight for me.
Sux to be >6ft, way over rated lol
The engine break in is approx. 3k - 5k miles for full power output so RELAXXXXXXXXXXXX .
my black on black ZR2 will be here next week, can't wait
We just picked up a 2023 Z71 with this color. We couldn't decide if it was Green or Yellow. We decided on "Baby's First Poop" 🙂 We love it!
Well at least its not as boring as the 6 shades of gray the Ranger offers
Test drove one last weekend. Front seats are fine for adults, back seat, not so much. The rear area is cramped, wife’s friend, average sized woman, got in the back seat, was cramped, kept hitting her head off that drop down in the middle of the headliner. Rear seat would be for smaller kids or just as a place for heavy clothing lunch cooler backpack. Too small, dealbreaker, and I really liked it too, gorgeous exterior
I've got a 2021 ZR2 Dusk Edition...still absolutely love it 4 years later. I prefer the V6.
The Chevy service tech told me it’s not good to drive it around town in 4 wheel auto mode like your doing, I allways make sure my new Colorado Trail Boss is in two wheel drive! I don’t know if it’s true but he did tell me that!
Better mpg i think
It also saves wear on tires and steering, and also the front differential.
4 WD for off-road or snow. Never run it on pavement.
Use 2WD for nonslick driving 90% of the time you want to be in 2WD
Auto is for snow and rain for if it’s slick out
4WD off road only you will almost never use it 4H and 4L
@@eddiehaskell5578he said 4w auto not 4wd. 4w auto is safe for pavement.
I would like the seats to say ZR2 and also dual exhaust . I don't like the light controls being on the radio. If your radio goes out for whatever reason, do your lights not work???
I believe the only solution to this is set the headlights to auto?
why the 93 octane gas? It does not require that does it? And why were you in "auto" 4wd mode all the time? 2WD mode would use less gas.
If i were getting a truck in this size this would be it.
So all this new truck are still horrible on MPG but have 4 bangers. Please make it make sense
Regulations pertaining to tailpipe emissions and not specifically to fuel economy. Most likely having to do with tailpipe emissions at idle which is why you suddenly started seeing all those auto start-stop functions (that kill engines) come out of nowhere. I'm not a fan either.
Define horrible mpg. I love it when the first complaints from people about trucks are mpg. You don't need a truck. You want a truck, but should get a car geared towards mpg. These are heavy bricks, in cases like zr2, that are outfitted with offroad packages. Your not going to get great mpg. Buy it for what is made for but whining about something that is unrealistic shows low understanding and iq. Are you also upset you can't tow more with your motorcycle?
I have a 2007 GMC 2500HD crew crab with a 6” lift. I get 8.5mpg. 16 would be a God send. lol
@@elche1976 No need to be rude to him. He wasn't complaining specifically about MPG on a truck. He was wondering why the switch to 4 cylinders happened without seeing a corresponding MPG increase over previous engines. The Tacoma also went from a 6 cylinder to a turbo 4 and sees the same MPG as it previously had. It can confuse people. I answered his actual question. I know it's the internet comment section but try laying off the hate sauce once in a while mmmkay?
@Scroll_Lock hateful, meh. Direct, sure. If you're easily offended, you'll take it how you want. Not gonna worry about trying to appease your imaginary set of reply standards. Is this where I should add, mmmmkay? 🙄
"powertrain doesn't feel special enough." Perfect example of consumers always thinking it's never good enough. It has 430 lb ft of torque...unheard of just a decade ago. You don't need more, shut up and be happy.
I wish they kept the desert boss for 2024. I really liked the safari bumper and sports rails. It’s a shame I probably won’t be able to get my hands on a brand new 2023 desert boss when I’m ready to buy a truck next year.
Just realized where I've seen you before...your Parker's buddy. Great review thx.
Is this a fully loaded truck?
I'd drop a tune just to optimize for the 93oct. For whatever reason, I don't believe they gave it "Flex" fuel capability from factory.
It was designed for 87 octane.
@@travisthompson2287 It was tuned down for 87 octane without the ability to re-tune on the fly for better octane. Not sure why they'd put an obvious limitation on this motor after bulletproofing it. Either way, this can be fixed with tune.
"that big 4 cylinder". Lol said NO ONE EVER!
I am surprised by the MPG. In my 2022 Rebel with G/T package(which forces the eTorque). In mostly city driving, I average around 16.7. 1 or 1.5 MPG isn't a significant difference IMHO, especially when you consider the two platforms and capabilities.
I’m so exited to get myself a Z71
Does it fit in your garage ?
"lock ring that secures the fuel pump to the fuel tank assembly" recall - That's for starters, wait a year or so for more to come on that GM vehicle.
Nice looking truck! The 2.7L may not be as inspiring as a raptor or upcoming TRD Pro but if it proves to be a durable engine then I think it's great that GM gives us the same offroad cred at $5-10k less than the competition.
What are you talking about. It has 310 horsepower and 430 foot pounds of torque. This 4 cylinder is a beast
And it’s a small truck.
there is nothing inspiring about the trd pro other than its hybrid, if that even counts. . . its 278, that's what he 5th gen rangers and base model 6th gen rangers are making. . .
The Taco Pro does not have a front locker to my knowledge so ZR2 rules
I don't understand why they got away from the 4.3 v6 it got 24 and the 2.7 gets 23 mpg can someone explaine that? My 97 s10 got 24 mpg hyw
Nice review. After driving the ZR2, I don’t disagree about the lack of powertrain “specialness” in comparison to the Raptor. However, it also lacks the ~$5k in price premium that the Raptor commands. Interesting how the mpg ratings in April 2024 are now 17/17/17, not the 16/16/16 you showed.
The raptor has better suspension, steel bumpers, and comes spec’d out
@@fanboiahoy260 and has the corresponding price tag also. It’s a great vehicle, I just don’t feel the premium is worth it for me.
@@CraigG21 Plus, Rangers have that special Ford reliability ;-)
Dudes comparing a 49-52k truck to a 100k bronco raptor wtf ?
I have a 2018 zr2 and now a 2024.i absolutely love them both wouldn't trade eather for any other midsized or really full size out there.scept maby the ford raptor.
The Taco Pro does not have a front locker to my knowledge so ZR2 rules.
i don't know if you covered it or if i missed it, how were the seats compared to a GMC canyon AT4? how did the MPGs do going uphill or elevation? how many gas trips ?
Seats are the same just different colored upholstery. I had a 23 canyon I just sold for a 24 ZR2 😂
Guy just sad “let’s fire up this BIG OLE TURBO 4 CYLINDER” hahahahahaha 😂😂😂

Has the same torque as the ranger raptor with a twin turbo six on regular unleaded . . .
@@davidd8892 what difference does it make if it doesn’t translate to being as fast
great review! The powertrain is the only reason why I am taking a pass and not ordering this! Hope they change their mind in the next couple of years
They won’t. That’s the way the industry is headed.
I'm with you though it may be the future. However, it can be improved by adding port injection to keep intake valves clean and drop that dumbass cylinder de-activation.
Im loving my at4x as well!
I envy you. Just wish I could afford the price and the cost of gasoline. If I was only wealthier....sigh
Good looking truck. Hate all the gloss black plastic on the interior though
They charge 500 bucks for that paint? No way!! I’d never pay that for a color..
My 2018 with a v6 got 23 on highway if I didn't fly
The zr2 is supposed to be more of a rock crawler rather than a trophy truck. You could have a different engine, you still want the torque heavy numbers, which this has.
You did not put it in BAJA mode
It puts out more power!
I have the 22 zr2 bison diesel. And if GM would offer the diesel for this great looking truck I’d trade my current truck in for that. Sadly GM got rid of the diesel option going forward.
I like the basic LT models extended bed
Paddle shifters would have made it a sensible correct machine!! Floppper
Do you think it's good for a daily driver on long commutes? I'm doing 50 miles 1 way, and 5'10"
I have one, lots of room, very smooth ride, very comfortable ride.
My 2024 trail boss has the same screen as that zr2 for the speedo and rpm.
I have colorado diesel on 37s i get 25mpg doing 70mph
Yeah it’s a diesel
All pickups have four size spares! When they’re from the factory!
Looks like Lake Zurich, IL.
The all windows down button is a waste of an aux button….adjustable pedals would’ve been way better
The Bronco Raptor is also double the price.
Ranger raptor will be in the similar price range. 50s apparently.
I priced on out on line and it was in the high 70’s
Ranger Raptor base is $9k more than ZR2 base.
@@EddieXcorrect. I have a ranger Raptor on order and it’s $55 . If I build and price a ZR2 it’s damn near identical.
Sale-man will tell you anything to sell you a 15mpg truck. “ it gets good mileage gasoline”
It gets way better than 15.
Im seeing an average 17.4 in city and low 20s highway on my ZR2.
The ZR2 is not worth the money in my opinion unless you just care about looks. You can get the LT with the turbo max engine (ZR2 engine) and in 4x4 for about $20,000 less.
I think that color is not called yellowish gold, I think its called urinalysis color.
😂
52,000 is kind of crazy to me lol
The reason the engine doesnt sound high revy is because it has a 4 inch piston which is huge especially being a 4 cylinder with that being said it will build more torque but will suffer in the higher rev range. Think of a harley V twin they are 1200 cc or bigger and are only 2 cylinder but they cant rev for shit😂 i really like this truck i just not sure about the power plant? If you look at the market especially mid size you cant get away from the forced induction engines unless you buy a gladiator. Chevrolet really did build the engine to take some abuse thou with all forged internals and even added additional webbing to the block for strength and considering other manufacturers havent really stated any tech spec on theirs i think Chevrolet is the better choice? Also on another note it's probably a better rock crawler offroader rig than a baja desert runner as you compared it to the Ranger raptor. Looks like a winner to me and im a Toyota fan boy still hesitant on the new tacoma 🤷♂️
People are forgetting that now a days engines are becoming more compact per the stupid government emissions regulations. For all the fancy tech included is where the money is also going. Now if Chevy made a basic off road truck with a turbo v6 with now tech at all with manual locking four wheel drive and nothing else then the truck would be $40k. We are in a technology based new car industry. If you don’t like it don’t buy it, that simple. I love my ZR2 bison.
I’d get one of these before a Tacoma. The newest Toyota mid-size is horrendous with respect to exterior styling.
Thought I was the only person who thought that
100% agree.
I just bought a 24 ZR2 a week ago for that very same reason. I always wanted a Tacoma, but not anymore
The frontend of the Taco isn’t bad looking but the bed sides and backend is fugly.
NO Taco has a front locker that I know of. My 2023 TRD Off Road Premium doesn't so unless things have changed...
I opted for a canyon at4x but pretty much the same as the zr2. Super happy with it, maybe needs 35s
I would drop an ECM tune on that 2.7. I've seen as much as 80whp gain with the tune.
Lol there goes the warranty. Are you 12 years old?
@@paulm6481 That's an odd flex... But, to answer your question, I'm old enough to know that there are ways around that.
I agree. It already has 310 and 430 foot pounds of torque
@@paulm6481not when your friends with the service department owned many tuned cars that were still under warranty, stinger gt , and my ford raptor
It's never quite that simple. Opening up the downpipe and a tune can increase power, if the injectors can support the additional fuel flow, but that usually changes the HP/TQ curve significantly and the turbo may "run out of steam" earlier in the RPM range, as it's set up for a certain volumetric efficiency where just simply spinning faster doesn't produce more airflow, it'll be stronger on the way up to the new peak, but the peak tends to come earlier and then after tends to be worse...unless you go to a bigger turbo, which usually requires bigger injectors and so on. It really depends on how much leeway there is with the injector cc/min as far as just "slapping a tune" on there, it's uncommon, but not unheard of, for a manufacturer to leave excess range here. All this said, tuning for a turbo engine is radically different than a NA because you can change some of the parameters fairly easily and shove more fuel and air into the cylinder. Leaning out is your enemy here, but significant power increases can be made relatively easy compared to NA that is generally limited by the cams.
All the way to 8500 feet, you don't say? 🤣
Bagrbilla
It's a regular gas motor. value thing
Nice Truck
Torn between a high spec Frontier Pro 4x or a no option ZR2
16 miles is bad. Why get four cylinder if you get 16 miles? 🤔
🤦🏻♂️ this is built for offroad. This is not meant to be a daily driver getting great mpg. At least pretend to understand why it gets the mpg it gets.
My zr2 gets around 20 mpgs, he's driving around in 4 "auto" which is killing the economy.

I’m tired of all these baby 4 banger turbos. They should have dropped the 5.3 or even better, the 6.2 in this one.
It’s all about meeting EPA regs
Get a Nissan Frontier before 2029 and you won't have to deal with that. The last v6 midsize truck. Take your savings on that purchase and aftermarket it up to where you want it. It's the only real option now.

asF indeed. GM pretending they can price like Toyota does minus the reliability.🤣
Ummm wait until you see similar equipped toyotas. It won't be the same price.
The GMs are the most competitively priced trucks in this segment. Go look up what the new Tacomas cost, and they haven’t even released pricing for the hybrid engine. Probably gonna start just under $60k.
@@Holden-McGroin I expect the TRD Pro to start at $55k since the last one was 51K. Dealers will mark it up to $60k and more. Smart money goes with the TRD Off Road which is basically a Pro without hybrid and has cloth seats and with the upgrade package and stabilizer disconnect plus locking diff. comes in at $49k. Like I said though Toyota dealers love to screw their customers and GM get's the advantage in being able to actually build the exact truck you want. Toyota doesn't take orders, they only have allocations so do expect to pay much more than the ZR2, based on my experience looking at dealer lots.
