Zr2! Having lockers all around is a big deal for me.
Lockers don't really help off-road. They're only useful when you get stuck in snow
@driftx2 I suppose if you pretty much are driving dirt trails, sure lockers might not be needed. They are most definitely useful for rock crawling pretty much anything other than dirt roads.
I have found the lockers in my zr2 to be highly helpful climbing loose dirt/rock hills.
Taco has torque vectoring so rear lockers and the disconnect up front will likely be plenty. I have a deposit down on a TRD Pro. ZR2s are junk and cheaply made.
@@F3RN250cool story Bro, you sound bias 😂
I have owned both the ZR2 and the Tacoma, and I liked them both. Have to confess I liked my old Off-Road Tacoma more than my old ZR2, but the tides have turned. The new ZR2 is a perfect blend of comfort and off-road capability in a much nicer exterior package. 💯
In your opinion yes
@@joseeduardo4327 Ya think?
Really good luck with your Chevy 😅😅Toyota is a better truck by far .
Like the extra storage room in the Taco but love the interior of my canyon AT4X. Also no matter how you look at it, time and time again lockers are superior to Atrac
Its a chevy.....not a real offroader
@@gabeslb can't wait for the head to head videos next year. Lockers have all ready been proven superior to Atrac systems
@@gabeslbbahahaha then you obviously don't know shit about car's or truck's as Chevy's dominated the mid truck market as far as off road capabilities with their truck's. My 16 Colorado out does any factory ranger orTacoma. I actually off road mine pretty often an is super Capable of going anywhere.
Its still clowning the taco 😅 @gabeslb b
@@gabeslb LMAO is that why Toyota pulled out of the Best in the Desert series after the last gen ZR2 joined the same class? I remember Toyota dumped a mountain of cash into building a truck for the series and Hall Racing unveiled that they were going to compete in the same class with the brand new ZR2 and Toyota pulled that truck from the series overnight without explanation.
As a multiple Chevy owner I can attest they look awesome. However if you want a truck that will not keep you in the shop buy a Toyota. Period. End of discussion.
LOL
@@docholliday7548it’s true
The only new Toyotas I’ve seen come in with issues were because the customer pulled the transmission oil plug instead of the engine when trying to do their own (free if done by us under 30k) oil change.
No joke here. I own a 2017 Colorado diesel. Switched from a Taco to the Colorado because of the Duramax. Range is awesome … but, 6 years later, I have no heat in the cab. $4,500 to fix it … some odd diverter part buried in the dash … requires full dash removal. On a truck with only 55K miles. This new Tacoma design and this hybrid motor will bring me back. No BS issues on Toyotas period.
My new at the time 2022 Toyota Tacomas ac heater blew at 400 miles, started having electrical problems, kept taking it back, payed it off only put 3k miles on it and got rid of that POS for a much more powerful, better looking Colorado Trail Boss, plus I got the 430torque calibration!
Both excellent trucks. I chose the '23 Colorado ZR2 and VERY pleased with it both on and off road. SOLID.
I was set on looking into a 2023 canyon at4 but this tacoma trail hunter with all its features made me switch real quick
ZR2 the all around clear winner. Its a superior truck
Haha dont cry
100%
ZR2 trash
Digging the Colorado ZR2.
Wow the ZR2 trim has come a long way since the days of the old S10 platform!
Before S10 was the Chevy Luv
The ZR2 took this segment to the next level several years ago and I still haven’t found a reason to look beyond it. Amazingly capable right from the factory.
Except the colorados just randomly stop working, that’d be a pretty good reason to look beyond.
Lol sure
And ZR2 will be $5-10k cheaper
Just like every other midsized truck in the segment. I like a truck personally not a fancy truck i don't use them features, I went and bought the 3rd gen Tacoma before they turbocharged it. I'm happy AF and mine is the total basic 📦 less shit to break later. There's no way I'd be happy with these new trucks with all this goofy technology! Take a look at Andre from "TFL truck" he bought a '23 trail Boss already had a problem being bricked out! Like 7,000 miles. Technologies all fine and dandy until you start to have problems with it when you need. Not my 🍵 of Joe.
Reliability. GM doesn’t have it.
I just picked up a 2023 ZR2 and love it so far. Wife is a big truck girl too and she loved it the from the moment we went to go check it out. Super comfortable and just looks beautiful however i haven't had a chance to hit the trails YET but cant wait. Super happy with my purchase
Right on! And we love it too!!! Let us know when you hit the trails.
Aloha Gentlemen. This is an excellent and comprehensive video analysis for the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 and the Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter. Great job guys.
Thank you!
nice work boys, thank you
Out of all of these new trucks chevy and gmc really know what's up. They look great compared to other brands
Nice review!!
Thanks!
Only thing I’m disappointed in is No Rear AC/Heat Vents. When you take your family on a trip. The back passengers should to be comfortable too. You shouldn’t have to blast the front AC/Heat for back passengers to be comfortable
The ZR2 DOES have rear vents
Did you watch the video?
Wait what?! Sway bar disconnect? That's awesome! 😎
I would love a trailhunter 6ft bed, no snorkel or Bed Rack so I can put a camper on it and not feel like I wasted money on that Bed Rack. As for the tires, Toyota has commented previously that the tires they choose are for NVH and to avoid negative reviews in the first 6 months of ownership and that off-roaders will but the tires they like to use anyways regardless of which truck they buy. The only thing that bums me out on the Tacoma is the lack of rear air conditioning for my dogs. I won’t be getting a new truck until next year so I’ll be checking out the entire segment before making a decision
So basically the TRD Pro…
@@nlmaster9811 nope, TRD Pro does not come with a 6ft bed, and will likely have lower payload due to the OEM Fox Shocks
ARB is making a bed bar setup in conjunction with Toyota that uses that rack as the front, so you can mount a tent. I'm hoping that it means it will be easily modular so I can take the tent off and have full access to the bed again easily and vice versa.
My favourite trim on the 2024 Toyota Tacoma the trailhunter,& I bet I would look awesome in the classic Sandstone colour!.Iv seen one 2023 Toyota Hilux here in Chingola(Zambia),it looks nice.
cant wait to see them on a trail for comparison
I like both trucks but for me its all about reliability and Toyota is know for that plus all the extra features on the Taco are a win aswell
That Skid plate overhang in the front looks lkke it will hang up. It should join the front bumper. The gap looks like it will fill up with mud.
ZR2 Bison would be a better comparison vehicle for the TRD Trailhunter.
TRD Pro vs ZR2
TRD Off Road vs Z71
Nah, the OffRoad needs to go up agains the TrailBoss
For 10k less, I'll take the ZR2.
You will lose more than that in resale value. Tacoma's hold there value much longer.
@@erichimmelreich9372 Not true any longer. Check out the Toyota Tacomas reliability rating. It’s not what it used to be.
@@erichimmelreich9372also, zr2 resale is awesome
@GregEmburyK4GTE still better than a Chevy.
@@erichimmelreich9372 Ok. What are you 12 ?
My ZR2 lasted 5 years without any issues except:
- The headlights were a joke. I believe I read that the previous-gen Colorado has the worst headlights sold in North America.
- 8 speed had a class action lawsuit against it, one of the worst transmissions ever
I ultimately sold it because I couldn’t safely drive it in my climate due to the transmission shifting improperly without throttle and causing wheel spin.
But if those things are fixed here, would LOVE to get one again…
Nailed my two major thoughts/concerns EXACTLY with my 2016 Z71.
You should of gone with the diesel colorado and the 6 speed transmission in them is much more reliable.
8 speed trans is the biggest reason I won't buy one. That's why I'm looking at the Taco.
I've got an 8 speed in a 19 Trailboss. It's fine.
@@terrencejones9817 I wish they would've used the 10-speed like the Ford Ranger and my 20 Trail Boss LT has.
As an Iforce, does it have the timing belt or chain?
1st time on your video, I would like to know how tall aee you guys to gage the back seats.
I have a 2006 GMC Canyon SLE with z71 suspension with a few issues can't towe, but how is the Cany/ colorado z71 at towing? #FutureRide #Save #Lottery #Start aFamily with my girlfriend I met at my old retail job.
im curious with the light bar coming on when you have your high beams on if you'll have issues on the highway with police?
They'll almost never pull you over for it. Depends on the state, but in CO you can have 4 lights on the front of your vehicle on the roadway. They don't distinguish between individual bulbs or units though.
Having said that - don't be that guy with the light bar active on the highway.
I like both trucks. The Toyota has some unique features and will undoubtedly have excellent reliability and resale value. Nonetheless, I would probably purchase the ZR2 for its (likely) superior off-road capability and interior design.
I've purchased several vehicles and interior design was never a consideration. Function over form
Boyyyy Cant wait to receive my sr5 4x4 hunter !!
Great trucks! ZR2 has a lot more useful features but Toyota reliability pushed me towards the Tacoma.
Keep in mind that reliability record is with NA engines the new tundra has had many engine failures. Supposedly they have a fix for it now 2 years later.
Loved the dirt wrap looks great at whole foods. 😂
Toyota all day. Its simply going to be way more reliable, especially on the trail. Can't knock the Zr2 at all though. Its nice looking and very capable. Just would put my money on something that is not going to leave me stranded, or cost on repairing later on. I have a 07 tacoma that has almost 300k on it, and you're not going to believe this, but ive had to repair nothing NOTHING. It stil has the original bilstein stock shocks. Simply amazing. It does upset me that Toyota wont go crazy like the Ford Ranger raptor, or something, but i understand they are in it for reliability.
Toyota has a good track record but the tundra has had its fair share of problems. I'd wait a bit for either of these and see what issues, if any, pop up.
Toyota are less reliable nowadays dude can't compare a 07 tacoma 😂 to a 24 geez i have a 98 silverado still going strong to.. 400k 😅
@@rshinn8776 The 2.4T and the transmission have both been in other models for a while now, its fine.
@@geezusmeatball1328which 2024 Toyota are you talking about? Toyotas are still solid vehicles.
Wrong
I like how you can rip the front end off the truck if you actually ue the recovery hook
Tires stink on the Tacoma
How much do people finance on new purchases with these trucks?
Why does the zr2 display have two "fuel" indicators on lower left?
ZR2 for me … just way more capability & nicer design IMO.
Lol how is the chevy more capable than the toyota? Colorados have crap resale and horrible reliability before this model and now they have turbos.. Yota all the way
@@Boltdriver70 LOL Ok Captain Extra-Chromosome, more capable means actually having a front locker, something the Toyota STILL doesn't have....and so I'll be buying a ZR2. You can cry about it if you like.
@@kx8960 lol calm down man it's the internet
@@Boltdriver70dude resale value isn't everything. Hahaha you don't buy a car or truck for resale value you by them because toy like what it has an can do. The ZR2 is an all be me capable as it'll have better approach angles depart angles ground clearance front an rear lockers an so on. The ZR2 was purposely built for off roading the trailhunter looks more like a better grocery getter. Also the colorados have actually been pretty reliable as i can attest to that first hand I own a 16 that i frequently beat to shit and keeps on going with no issue's besides having to replace one of the nox sensors but that's it.
@@Boltdriver70The irony to me is you're knocking GM when your name indicates you drive a GM that has absolutely nothing to do with this segment. If you truly were concerned about resale value, you would've done your homebody before purchasing.
Im a chevy guy but damn toyota has some cool features like the fog lights and the JBL speaker
It’s only fair that if you have the Tacoma Pathfinder you should compare it to the ZR2 Bison while y’all should compare the ZR2 with the TRD and the Raptor.
Otherwise great video!!
Tacoma 'Trailhunter'...
😍 ILL take the TrailHunter...but, its going to be $90,000,000,000,000,000! I just buy the SR ...if i can afford it.
Wrong choice. It’s not good looking and Toyota infotainment sucks! The inside still looks out of date.
@@wint_62 Colorado is all PLASTIC. GOOD LUCK GOING over walmart speed bumps without destroying the engine, bending the frame, suspension, and trans. But, its a govt motors product and will be bailout again to keep producing POS.
@@wint_62better than the rest that zr2 sucks
@@wint_62 stop capping bro that infotament in the new Tacoma is good and very responsive
My only gripe about this vehicle, which I hope it's changed from this pre-production model, is how shiny the plastic inside is on the doors and such. Hoping that's just a mold being used for now, and the final product has a more matte plastic color.
Ranger raptor might be better than both of those . But trail hunter . I can count on Toyota to work . The Colorado battery issues insane.
Ranger Raptor is supposedly going to list for 56,000 puts it between the Trailhunter and the ZR2. Its Baja oriented like the TRD pro though.
😂😂 😂😂😂 ranger and raptor better thentoyota 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤪🤪🤪🤪🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
the chevy looks so damn good
My 2005 Colorado had some funky thing about it that when you turn right, the truck would act like it was stalling out. My 2015 Colorado is doing the exact same stupid thing. I’m ready to give Toyota a chance!
Hmm that's odd I've got a 16 and never experienced that. What engine do you have?
Well, FINALLY one is available, and I'm picking up my blue, loaded (with sunroof) ZR2 tomorrow!🤘🤘
Both a great, but I personally love trail hunter more 👌
As a multiple Toyota and Honda owner, I can say this with confidence.. Japanese engineering is hard to surpass when it comes to crafting cars and trucks. Their meticulous attention to detail and adherence to rigorous standards are commendable. While Japanese vehicles may not always win in terms of aesthetics, their reliability is unmatched. In essence, if you prioritize appearance, opt for an American-engineered vehicle. However, if you value quality, reliability, and your Wallet lol, Japanese vehicles are the way to go, any time of day.
Not even coil springs on the rear of the ZR2?
Man if they kept the features like headlights on the analog side, I’d definitely take the zr2 but I’ve seen too many software issues that might be problematic when you actually need the truck
My favorite was the charging port or door handles not working on Tesla's. woopsies.
They no longer have software issues..
@@djcan9503 until the next one.
So since 99 chevy has had auto headlights but the fact you can't have a knob would stop you from buying 🤣🤣🤣🤣 🤡🤡
This is your reason? Lol 🤡
Im really looking forward to the new tacoma, its got some really cool features that im excited about
Why did y'all block the tacoma dash? was that MPG? is the MPG that bad that Toyota is afraid to share?
Jc the Zr2 mpg is way worse than my 2022 F-150 2.7 on 35's with Livernois tune! 😂😂😂 I get 20 city/25 hwy!
I’m a huge fan of technological advances but personally I don’t want the majority of the things I need in a screen. I don’t trust technology THAT much. But that’s just me. It’s a hard choice. Love the look of the taco but I can’t help thinking there’s a a lot you could save money on by doing yourself. But Toyota is known for reliability. Chevys got some good things going for that ZR2 and I’d prefer the less is more look definitely. I’d just want it to make sure I get from point A to point C without stopping at B. But I’m not even looking into buying a truck yet so these are just my thoughts 😂😂
You would like a NISSAN for simplicity and reliability, looks
Toyota sure did up their game on this truck. It’s one good looking Tacoma. I’m sure it will make a fine truck for seeking Bigfoot.
Might want to adjust the Mack daddy H Town seating position on that passenger seat before you determine rear seat leg room
😂
What about the Gladiator Rubicon?
Chevy looks hella buff💪not a fan of all the technology inside tho... I wish my truck had the 🪨 rails/frame sliders & all the skid plates! That's a really 🆒 addition I added the catalytic converter transmission 🛡️ so that tweakers can't get to it lol. Only problem you add all those rock rails and it eats into your payload real quick
ZR2 all the way!!
Will the taco power Tailgate fall off like I've seen in the desert?
I'm sure the tires are pre production. Yes I know the trd pro came with a decent tire.
One can hope 😂
Great review gents, but I’ll take a 85’ K10 4x4 over both of those.
Hell yea man i would too if i had one lol. Great trucks though and super fun. I had a 76 K5 and that thing was awesome and miss it all the time.
No cap + water = Bad day
No boat launching without caution if there's alge on the ramp or your crossing creek you could be in trouble. Seems like off road pkg would definitely have a gas cap option 🤔
I love the ZR2!!! Too bad I mod my trucks out beyond what each of these are capable of from the factory so I will always choose the more reliable one. Tacoma in 2024 basically has full size truck ring and pinion gears so it’s good for 37-40s. Whereas I’m pushing it big time now on 40s.
Why didn’t Toyota put air vents for the back seat like they did in the new hilux gr
They have to cut costs back for recession coming. Everyone is doing it. That’s why older models have gone up in value.
toyota is known for saving little shit like that for the following year as their refresh cycles are about 6 years. i’m sure they’ll add that along with the center arm rest on the back seats along with other minor upgrades like that in a couple years
I would love a dark brown leather interior with that bronze oxide exterior.😮
Hood Proprod for good reliability in the front, and electric motorized tailgate in the back😆 If only they came the 4.0l or a normal gas only engine😞
Tacoma highest selling midsized truck in America.
And GM has the highest selling full size. What's your point?
@@shiftmotorsports9803 Ford F -Series says otherwise. Ford the highest selling full size truck in America. 😂
@@goodbadugly9849 Not if you add the Silverado and Sierra sales together. Common misconception

I don't think it actually is.
This is purely anecdotal, but I see way more Colorados and Canyons than I do Tacomas.
Which ventilated seats are better ?
Colorado
This was the same Tacoma that had 198mi? If so it had 15 mpg average 😢 I hope that won’t be accurate 😂
Its a hybrid and has a smaller engine, same size knobby tires, the Taco should do better. Hwy mileage, probably not much difference.
It was probably sitting out in the Texas heat running all the time to keep it cool for journalists.
I'm sure they will sell it with a story of 20-25mpg and it will get 14 just like the last generation. Chevy is every bit as bad. You can see the mpg of the zr2 in tfl's desert drive
Better see this review again but with the Bison next year
Deal!
I'm just afraid what the price is going to be for trail hunter. I think I'm still going with the zr2
The ZR2 is more capable. The TurboMax can be tuned stock and make 350whp and over 500lb ft of torque on 93 octane and still hold the power reliably. Trifecta has a milder option if you don't want the extra power and just want a healthy dosage of torque and some horsepower
when do these drop
Taking bets on which goes out first on the GM.
Engine or trans?
Lol
Both.
Wrong
Wait.. so the snorkel is not a traditional snorkel and is there only for dust mitigation?
Roughly @ 12:30
Too many unsealed electronics onboard for Toyota to endorse deep water fording. They have stated it is for cleaner air when on dusty trails.
I want both
Just came to see how many arguments from the Toyota fanboys were won with reliabilty and resale. Looks like most of them. Hows the breakover angle? Reliable. Whats the fording depth? Resale value.
Comment of the day, hands down!
@@TexasTruckChannel Thank you!
Need display on the ZR two till it fails, but the truck still runs. I might prefer analogue gauges, time-tested for decades, and one of the last things on an older vehicle to actually break down from vehicles I own as far as the 1972 Chevy nova, Oldsmobile Cutlass, 1986 Chevy Cavalier … and today, my 2022 Toyota 4Runner.
can you get a 6 foot bed in the trail hunter?
yes
No headlights if your display goes out due to lack of switches that with no gas cap means water is the Achilles heel
I sure hope Toyota's 'extra's' don't hurt reliability.
For remote travel and anything crazy, I much prefer less tech.
All that said, certainly some nice creature comforts and I appreciate the thought that went into it.
New Tacoma! I’ll probably trade my bullet proof 21 Trd OR in for a 25 or 26 Tacoma with the Max Hybrid. 👍🏻
What is the price on the Tacoma?
OEM Compressor is 🔥
Don’t know why Toyota is allergic to front lockers. That and long travel for the top trims would take it to the next level. But I’d still go the taco route personally and just throw a front locker in there if I had the funds.
Taco all day dont care if the competition looks better or has some new tech. I want reliability and unbreakable performance that's Taco for you. Love my 21' Taco but the new one looks great i want one TRD offroad please! 😁🤙
I’ve had 4 tacos and currently own a 19 ZR2. The ZR2 is hands down the most off road capable truck I’ve owned but something tells me it just is t as reliable as I found the tacos to be but so far it’s been amazing. Last 2 tacos had sc on them and no issues and lots of fun. Getting ready to put an sc on the ZR2 and as quick as the sc 15 taco was (380hp) I’m thinking the ZR2 is gonna b quicker.

No storage under the seat. 😬. I use my flat floor on my truck constantly
Sportbar on the Tacoma should be an option not standard.
The tow hooks on the Tacoma are too far under the truck. You'll have to dig for those the first time you get stuck in the mud.
I agree they're in a bad location but at least it has them. Many people have been saying the Tacoma doesn't have any front recovery points.
Not to mention the "skid plate " will get peeled back the first rock ledge it hits. Why does it hang down like that?? Really odd design choice.
@@morgancook6481 I agree 100%. I feel like the people designing todays trucks and SUVs have no idea what they're doing. Maybe they've never owned one.
No under seat storage on the taco is an instant deal breaker
Funny how they compare the Trailhunter to the basic ZR2 and still loses. Can’t even compare it to the ZR2 Bison when it comes to off-road capability. Whole different level
Based on what. The Trailhunter hasn’t even been released yet and you are trying to decide that you know which truck is a better off-roader. Yeah because you are such an expert. 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Colorado vs tacoma ,zr2 vs trailhunter, zr2 bison vs trd pro etc trd offroad vs zf1 lol
Details on both vehicles are out lol do some research there bud
Did you even watch this video? Lol or any others on the specs?
Looks like that Trailhunter was averaging about 26 mpg. Not bad.
How reliable are the engines in Colorado?
They're pulling around Silverados and Sierra. I bet they're working more efficiently in a lighter truck. Toyota didn't put their 4 cylinder in the Tundra. I think that's very telling.
I gotta stay loyal with the Taco's. I had a ZR2 but it had transmission issues sadly
In case anyone is wondering what was on the censored dashboard, it is either:
1. That it was averaging 15.4 mpg
2. That the mpg gauge goes 0-60 instead of 0-30
Just to eliminate any mystery, we blurred the fuel data because this engineering test mule was not calibrated yet. The number indicated was in no way accurate.
Makes you look cool when you're at Whole Foods...
Zr2 would be my choice 👍🏼
That trail hunter is going to be well over $60,000 bucks plus high interest rate for most people buying it because half the people want the latest shit!
