CatAleah yes!!!!! I hate when people say, “Kill it!”. I have had chickens for 4 yrs and we went through great planning and researching to make sure our coop was predator-proof. So far so good. We had baby fox grow up near us and NEVER had an issue.
A raccoon got into my chickens and quail but I don't hate her because she had babies to feed and even though I was heartbroken it's still nature so I have to accept that it happened. I was angry at first and blamed myself for not putting them away earlier but things will happen so in the future I'll be better prepared to protect my babies :)
I have no problem dispatching small predators, we have displaced their natural predators so we need to keep culling them to prevent overpopulation, it is irresponsible to think otherwise!

In fact, my back yard's natural habitat no longer exists as it was old-growth forest a number of thousands of years ago and it would take roughly that same amount of time for the real permaculture to return. I don't understand what these arguments from nature are meant to imply in situations where we are doing unnatural things like raising vegetables and chickens for our own consumption. What we're intending to do is entirely unnatural. My back yard doesn't produce tomatoes and eggs when left to its own devices.

I agree with you. I was expecting it to be much worse. In her defense, however, perhaps she hasn't seen very bad chicken coops so it actually may be the worst chicken coop SHE'S ever seen.
As an older person myself, I think, it just became TOO MUCH for her to keep up with, especially without her husband. Now she knows that if she wants eggs and chicks she had to become the 'Farmer' in the family now that he is apparently gone OR disabled and not able to do... As a 'Sole Parent' I am USED to doing for myself (whatever it is... either with my own hands or by knowing who to contract or call). I think many Married women don't understand how much work a spouse saves them from until they lose them for some reason. Good job, she is on her way to keeping her OWN chickens now.

I agree with you. I've been divorced 20 years and I've slowly learned that I can do it all fine on my own. At first I really thought I couldn't. If someone is in an unhealthy marriage, just know you can do it and now we have youtube to learn so much and do our homework. It's great. Thanks
The issue is she had a saw in her hand which is verrry dangerous so it was a situation where if the board was pulled or moved it could have cut her while she was cutting it. I don't think she meant it meanly but the saw is loud so she probably had to say it sternly so the lady could hear her.

@@Angelique-mf6bs have you ever worked with power tools? that's a situation that can go bad VERY fast. its not even that she could have cut herself, but i imagine if pulled by someone inexperienced (as the other woman seems to be) the board could have hurt both of them. It's not about politeness--it's about SAFETY. any carpenter worth their salt will tell you to move the hell out of the way when they're sawing. You may want to help but if you don't know what to do or haven't been told, MOVE. One of them could have been seriously hurt and it's not about being mean.
Angelique while it wasn’t the nicest way to go about it...when you’re in the middle of using a table saw or skill saw, the last thing you need is someone moving the piece of wood and causing a horrible accident. It scared the crap out of her and so she snapped at her out of being startled. I don’t blame her at all. I don’t want to loose a finger or worse because of somebody else doing something stupid like that. My father is a carpenter, he always taught me to never distract him or touch the lumber. I’m sure she probably apologized or explained herself for being snappy.
Only problem I see is the chicken run. With it only being 3 feet tall that is going to be very difficult to get in there to clean and do maintenance on. You would have to bend over on your knees to go up in there.
WH6FQE - RC Anderson Except there's no gate! I would've tried to make the run "roof" about 6 1/2 ft tall, so pretty much anyone could walk around in there. You do have to clean it. Those metal fence posts come in 9' lengths, and only 2-3 ft are required to be sunk into the ground (for cane berries trellis-- huge load) so just having the light wire wouldn't stress the posts any. I know they were trying to reuse as much as possible, but i think they could've gotten away with sinking them less, depending on the soil of course. Also, Mama said she'd seen no snakes, but I would want a much smaller gauge wire than rabbit wire. I'm afraid rats and mice and other rodents could easily get in theough that run fencing. Couldn't their droppings make the Chooks sick, same as us hoomans? Overall this was a fun watch, and i learned a few things. I love Becky's videos, and i always learn something. THANKS BECKY!!
I agree, the run should be tall enough to walk in. Although my coop is 3 ft above 12 ft of the run with another 8 ft of the run that’s 8 ft high. But my coop run is on wheels and design more like a trailer where I can put it on the receiver of my truck and move the whole coop/run roughly 20 ft. at a time to a new area whenever the run starts looking a little poopy! This way I have no clean up to do in the run area, just move the coop/run to a new spot and rotate it around the property. My coop itself has a plastic laminate flooring on 3/4” waterproof material. Since I already have some hay, I’ve been putting the hay under the roasts where the chickens mostly poop at. Rest the floor just the laminate flooring and any poop that gets on the laminate is easily scraped up. May leave a stain sometimes, but once in a while I’ll use some vinegar on the floor to soak on the stains and just wash it out with the hose. I usually clean the coop least once a week under the roast. I got smart I think and I made the roost on a hinging system where it can be lifted up to the ceiling and then there’s nothing in the way. The floor is then completely opened for easy cleaning. Coop designed with 2 large swinging doors in the back 6 ft high and 8 ft wide. So I can place a cart at the back of the coop and shovel or scrap everything right into the cart to take to the garden area for compost. Never takes more then 15 minutes at the most to clean out my coop! My lady and I are disabled, so I needed to make my coop/run as easy and quick to clean as possible. It’s my first coop I’ve ever built, although I’m a now retired contractor. I probably have better skill set then most do? But making the coop/run/tractor as they call them, still was a trial and error mind set designing this huge heavy coop/run where it could be easily moved from one area to another. Over all size is 20ft by 12ft with the coop standing roughly 12 ft off the ground. Tried to build it as light as possible, but still be very strong to be able to move this huge contraption around my field. I’m just guessing on the weight, but I’m sure it’s at least 3000 pounds if not more? It’s got 24 no flat hand truck wheels the hang down 2 inches below the bottom frame of the run with a receiver hitch mounted to the front to hook up to my truck and it moves very easily so far! For my first attempt at building a large coop/run/tractor, I’m happy how it’s turned out. Also has 4 camper jacks around the unit to level it when it’s stationary too! Not a cheap project by any means though, I have over $7,000.00 into it, being all the materials used were treated and waterproofed, glued together with exterior glue and screwed with stainless steel screws. So I’m expecting this to out last my lifetime easily! I didn’t want to have to build another in a couple years!
Rebirth Resurrection I believe in working smarter/faster not harder and taking longer to accomplish projects! Especially as you get older and start having health issues that make doing anything/everything more difficult to do! Which I kept in mind when building my chicken coop tractor that has a waterproof flooring covered in a plastic laminate with 2-4’ wide doors in the back, roost folds up against the ceiling out of the way completely and it only takes 5 minutes to clean it out regardless how dirty it is? Just push it all right out the back doors into a trailer to compost into my garden. Of if I choose there’s a trap door in the coop floor that I can drop everything into the run underneath if I’m planing on using it for fertilizer and moving the coop tractor to another location for the chickens to forage on. Makes life easier/quicker raising chickens and more time for other projects that need to be done too
It also is a good way to let snakes into your coop. Rodents will chew thru them too. One they know there are chickens in there, they will try everything to get in

Bill. Theres a Difference. If its a CLEAN place, the chickens will eat a few bugs all is good. If the place is FILTHY and rheres bugs, it will make them UNHEALTHY. There is a DIFFERENCE Bill. Now go clean your Room!!!!!!! Your room is probably stank!!!!!!!!
The chickens already appreciate their clean coop and run. They are very similar to anything ( except maybe pigs and their cooling mud puddles) that feel better in a nice clean space. Thank you Becky for coming to the rescue for Nancy and her chickens.

My coop is a dream. It’s literally like a house. Concrete floor, huge walk-in coop, has a huge room attached to it where we keep the chicks and some storage.
Just my perspective being a 65 year old woman with physical limitations - the help of younger women/men in building/repairing is such a big help as it can be overwhelming. I am preparing to "build" a coop here in the hot Las Vegas, NV heat and I am overwhelmed a bit, but I think I will ask a younger woman who is a dear friend & as capable as I was at her age, she will be such a big help. So happy you helped her. Now if we can get more young people in chickens & homesteading that would be fantastic.
Becky, I think your attitute towards Nancy's coop was fine. The title might be a bit dramatic but you were complimentary about her trying to make changes and explained chickens are a learning process. I was impressed with the size of her coop as many people build very small in the beginning especially if they are thinking free range in the yard. One question, can the top wire be undone easily enough to encourage cleaning of the run a couple times a year? Laura
@@cockatooinsunglasses7492 I really think you should reconsider Peppermint essential oil! I spent Christmas week in the hospital because I was using peppermint oil in my home office and poisoned myself with it. I actually burned my esophagus and my tongue swelled. It might have been caused by putting the oil in my humidifier? Who knows but I think peppermint plants around the coop or hanging mint stems like you suggested. I have used those fly traps like Becky showed, but the smell is so awful, I couldn't stand it. Those fly traps need to hang further from the coop to draw the flies away from that area.
I loved this and what your doing Becky. I'm in the process of making my second coop. I lost one of my silkies to a skunk a few years ago and had no clue how it got in so I'm so determined to make my efforts pay off. I want my animals safe. I have 4 baby chicks and I'm preparing the coo and run now. I needed this to give me ideas. Ty

We have trained ours and it's so cool! We yell chuckchuck as we come towards the coop and they get all excited and come to us to be loved on before we collect the eggs and I've noticed less critters going to the coop since we have started putting scraps out in woods away from coop because critters will get full and not even worry about stealing hens or eggs. Also we have security cameras around our home that helps to keep an eye on my ladies coop. I absolutely love watching these videos; I always learn something new!
You talk about the benefit of having a chicken coop tall enough to stand in and then you make the run 3 feet tall with no door to get into the run. I doubt that she will be getting in there to do any poop pickup in the run, ever. Nice job cleaning up the coop and their food and water containers and nesting boxes. I wonder how long it will stay that way.

What, lay on your belly with your face in the chicken poop, while you feebly scrape with a tool? Great video! Very kind of you to take your time to help this woman. Chickens, owner, and viewers all win here..! I had to laugh at the comments at the point in the video you had to tell the lady to not touch the roosting bar you were cutting. No one seems to understand the loud noise a circular saw makes. These saws can really kick back on the user. I think your reaction was inline with the potential danger that could have occurred. The woman was obviously ok with that reaction. Danger sometimes needs a loud command to avert the threat of harm. I'm a real fan of your channel. 😁👍😉

A good multi sized sand for the bottom of coop. No straw. This make for a good clean up of Pooh & drainage. That wire will not keep out animals & snakes. Hardware clothe needs to be installed on any open area. Also baring around perimeter of the coop the hardware clothe & sharp gravel under the coops walls & run area. Rocks around the sides of walls. Nesting boxes you can put a little mat under it so you can pull out & clean it better. Also curtains in front of the nesting boxes gives some privacy if you walk in on one roasting.

I’m looking at a few buff oringtons for a few eggs and scratching around my garden during off season. And not attacking my granddaughter 😂. Just trying to figure out how to build my coop. I lay down a heavy duty tarp in my coop and layer it with fresh hay once a week (deep clean once a month) to deep clean I just pick up the whole tarp and dump all the crap (lit) it into the manure spreader...so easy to clean lol
Nancy, my Rhode Island Reds are 4 months. One is already laying, and the others are showing signs. In the video you talk about feeding them enough, I noticed mine dont eat all their feed a day. They free range, and I give them free range scratch, AND layer feed. As long as they are happy, shiny, and laying, can I be assured they are getting their nutritional needs met? I keep being told they are laying early, but they are super happy and healthy looking so I think I'm doing ok. Just want to be sure

OMG 😂 I was literally laughing my ars off 😂, this is so typical, old farm yard coop 😂 I have a friend with a coop that would Trump this one 👌 😂 she has about 3 sheds Tetrised together with plywood additions. It's literally like a maze, the floor is like walking on the moon from the layers of poop from years of not cleaning. My eyes were watering so bad from the stench 😛

How does one not know that filthy shit and moisture in a box will not only be unappealing to their chickens, but also will breed disease?! 🤦🏻♀️ Better yet how is this not blatantly obvious for everyone! I don’t know why ppl are commenting that the helper is being rude to the owner... she’s being direct without being hateful, she’s honest and even complimented this owner for what she did right. AND more importantly this coop is filthy, nasty even to the point this owner admitted to knowing her birds were eating their own eggs... regardless if this is for chickens, the owner should’ve done her homework about coop protection from predation, appropriate feeding and caution when mixing various breeds of birds!
Animal Keeper, hi there, we don’t know if Becky was being paid. I don’t think so, but even so the chicken owner obviously needs to learn how to clean the coop and take care of her own responsibilities, the chickens. Sitting in the house with the AC on isn’t going to do that. If you don’t want to put in the work you shouldn’t have chickens. I’m not trying to be mean but it doesn’t look like she can afford to pay someone to care for them for her. If she cleaned on a regular basis her coop wouldn’t have looked like that. Plus she didn’t have a clue about raising them. It was a good educational experience for her.
I really love how you are trying to help and it is an improvement but I noticed some things that you said that are fairly misinformed. 1. DE should never be used as a mix in where chickens are going to dust bathe. It acts as tiny razor blades which is how it gets rid of pest bugs. It will over time seriously compromise a chickens respiratory health. This has been confirmed through chicken deaths and following necropsies. 2. That coop and run is fine for around 10 birds. It’s not WAY too small for 12 birds. Guidelines are 4 sq ft. Per bird in coop and 10 sq ft per bird in run. 3. There is nothing wrong with collecting eggs from the back. If your hens are used to it then they won’t care that much. It won’t stop them from laying in the boxes. I’ve collected eggs that way and never had any issues whatsoever. That all being said I still feel like you are very nice for helping her out.
No I am not. It is safe to eat not inhale. I have used it for years for many different things. Do you take dust bathes in bisquick? And toothpaste is in paste form not dry powder so that is completely irrelevant to what I posted. The reason people use it on mites and to eat to kill intestinal parasites is because it’s microscopic razor sharp particles. When accumulated in the lungs it can do severe harm and has been confirmed to be the cause of death by necropsies of chickens who had it in their bedding. You can argue it’s safe all you want but the facts are facts. You shouldn’t be inhaling powder, especially something like DE and neither should your chickens.

Gail Damerow, in "The Chicken Health Handbook", suggests that particles of diatomaceous earth can stick to chickens' lungs and create respiratory problems. However, it's known that it is crystalline silica, not amorphous, which causes respiratory issues.
Becky I have chickens myself. They are doing great. I am one that if I touch any part of my coop I wash my hands when I’m done. I have been hearing a lot about home coops having salmonella problems. Question 1. What to do to prevent it. 2. What are sign that you may have a problem. 3. What are some natural antibiotics that a person can use. Thanks!

Hi Becky, What does the white powder that you sprinkled all over the coop do? Also what is the stuff yougave her for flies? We have a farm here in Davie, Fl. and the cows attrack a lot of flies. Had chickens for years... and my chickens had PLENTY OF FOOD ALWAYS AVAILABLE... eventually, an egg might break, and chickens may then start to eat eggs periodically. It happens. It does not necessarily mean the chickens aren’t getting enough food or protein.

I have nest boxes that I access from the outside just like that. And my hens laying in them don’t appear startled. Of course I’m not trying to sneak up and startle them. I get most of my eggs in them with the occasional laid on the coop or run floor
So I have a decent size hen house to keep them out of harms way. I want to build a yard for them so they can free range but I am worried about them flying over the fence. How tall should it be to keep them in place. Most of my flock are Barred Rock and they are good pretty calm but some do like to jump and fly
Where's the hay in their boxes. Was there a perch for them? They just look lost and needy. Becky, you are great in helping these poor chickens. The lady looked so happy when it was done. Looked very nice.
About 24 minutes into the video you put a white powder type of thing on the coop floor. It looked like flower. QUESTIONS for YOU: What was that powder and what the the purpose of using it?
Diatomaceous earth (food grade). It’s used to kill insects, helps keep your chickens mite free. Be careful when using it not to inhale (and don’t let your chickens inhale it either)
I never had any problem with the lid being opened on my nest boxes, but I always announced myself to the hens...just gently talking to them as I approached and opened the box. It didn’t even bother them when I would chase a broody hen off the nest. I could even collect eggs from under the girls with no problem. I will say that the Ameraucana I had was not as calm as other breeds, but even she was used to me opening the box. I hate chicken wire! It is really the worst...weak wire, lots of bare edge points to scratch you, and always sloppy. Love the fencing you put up!
It was so nice that you could go to Nancy's and make some really good suggestions and helped her put them into place - it didn't have to be a huge cost - everything was practical.

As an older person myself, I think, it just became TOO MUCH for her to keep up with, especially without her husband. Now she knows that if she wants eggs and chicks she had to become the 'Farmer' in the family now that he is apparently gone OR disabled and not able to do... As a 'Sole Parent' I am USED to doing for myself (whatever it is... either with my own hands or by knowing who to contract or call). I think many Married women don't understand how much work a spouse saves them from until they lose them for some reason. Good job, she is on her way to keeping her OWN chickens now.

The issue is she had a saw in her hand which is verrry dangerous so it was a situation where if the board was pulled or moved it could have cut her while she was cutting it. I don't think she meant it meanly but the saw is loud so she probably had to say it sternly so the lady could hear her.

@@Angelique-mf6bs have you ever worked with power tools? that's a situation that can go bad VERY fast. its not even that she could have cut herself, but i imagine if pulled by someone inexperienced (as the other woman seems to be) the board could have hurt both of them. It's not about politeness--it's about SAFETY. any carpenter worth their salt will tell you to move the hell out of the way when they're sawing. You may want to help but if you don't know what to do or haven't been told, MOVE. One of them could have been seriously hurt and it's not about being mean.

Angelique while it wasn’t the nicest way to go about it...when you’re in the middle of using a table saw or skill saw, the last thing you need is someone moving the piece of wood and causing a horrible accident. It scared the crap out of her and so she snapped at her out of being startled. I don’t blame her at all. I don’t want to loose a finger or worse because of somebody else doing something stupid like that. My father is a carpenter, he always taught me to never distract him or touch the lumber. I’m sure she probably apologized or explained herself for being snappy.

Only problem I see is the chicken run. With it only being 3 feet tall that is going to be very difficult to get in there to clean and do maintenance on. You would have to bend over on your knees to go up in there.

Except there's no gate! I would've tried to make the run "roof" about 6 1/2 ft tall, so pretty much anyone could walk around in there. You do have to clean it. Those metal fence posts come in 9' lengths, and only 2-3 ft are required to be sunk into the ground (for cane berries trellis-- huge load) so just having the light wire wouldn't stress the posts any. I know they were trying to reuse as much as possible, but i think they could've gotten away with sinking them less, depending on the soil of course.
Also, Mama said she'd seen no snakes, but I would want a much smaller gauge wire than rabbit wire. I'm afraid rats and mice and other rodents could easily get in theough that run fencing. Couldn't their droppings make the Chooks sick, same as us hoomans?
Overall this was a fun watch, and i learned a few things. I love Becky's videos, and i always learn something. THANKS BECKY!!
I agree, the run should be tall enough to walk in. Although my coop is 3 ft above 12 ft of the run with another 8 ft of the run that’s 8 ft high. But my coop run is on wheels and design more like a trailer where I can put it on the receiver of my truck and move the whole coop/run roughly 20 ft. at a time to a new area whenever the run starts looking a little poopy! This way I have no clean up to do in the run area, just move the coop/run to a new spot and rotate it around the property. My coop itself has a plastic laminate flooring on 3/4” waterproof material. Since I already have some hay, I’ve been putting the hay under the roasts where the chickens mostly poop at. Rest the floor just the laminate flooring and any poop that gets on the laminate is easily scraped up. May leave a stain sometimes, but once in a while I’ll use some vinegar on the floor to soak on the stains and just wash it out with the hose. I usually clean the coop least once a week under the roast. I got smart I think and I made the roost on a hinging system where it can be lifted up to the ceiling and then there’s nothing in the way. The floor is then completely opened for easy cleaning. Coop designed with 2 large swinging doors in the back 6 ft high and 8 ft wide. So I can place a cart at the back of the coop and shovel or scrap everything right into the cart to take to the garden area for compost. Never takes more then 15 minutes at the most to clean out my coop! My lady and I are disabled, so I needed to make my coop/run as easy and quick to clean as possible. It’s my first coop I’ve ever built, although I’m a now retired contractor. I probably have better skill set then most do? But making the coop/run/tractor as they call them, still was a trial and error mind set designing this huge heavy coop/run where it could be easily moved from one area to another. Over all size is 20ft by 12ft with the coop standing roughly 12 ft off the ground. Tried to build it as light as possible, but still be very strong to be able to move this huge contraption around my field. I’m just guessing on the weight, but I’m sure it’s at least 3000 pounds if not more? It’s got 24 no flat hand truck wheels the hang down 2 inches below the bottom frame of the run with a receiver hitch mounted to the front to hook up to my truck and it moves very easily so far! For my first attempt at building a large coop/run/tractor, I’m happy how it’s turned out. Also has 4 camper jacks around the unit to level it when it’s stationary too! Not a cheap project by any means though, I have over $7,000.00 into it, being all the materials used were treated and waterproofed, glued together with exterior glue and screwed with stainless steel screws. So I’m expecting this to out last my lifetime easily! I didn’t want to have to build another in a couple years!

Especially as you get older and start having health issues that make doing anything/everything more difficult to do! Which I kept in mind when building my chicken coop tractor that has a waterproof flooring covered in a plastic laminate with 2-4’ wide doors in the back, roost folds up against the ceiling out of the way completely and it only takes 5 minutes to clean it out regardless how dirty it is? Just push it all right out the back doors into a trailer to compost into my garden. Of if I choose there’s a trap door in the coop floor that I can drop everything into the run underneath if I’m planing on using it for fertilizer and moving the coop tractor to another location for the chickens to forage on. Makes life easier/quicker raising chickens and more time for other projects that need to be done too
The thing I learned in this video.....drill drain holes in the nest boxes. I never thought about doing that.
That helps when you spray them out once in a while☀️❤️☀️
It also is a good way to let snakes into your coop. Rodents will chew thru them too. One they know there are chickens in there, they will try everything to get in

My coop is a dream. It’s literally like a house. Concrete floor, huge walk-in coop, has a huge room attached to it where we keep the chicks and some storage.
Same, I put a plastic cover over the concrete though so I could give it a solid cleaning once a month.
You need to have the run so you can walk in it, same as the coop.

Just my perspective being a 65 year old woman with physical limitations - the help of younger women/men in building/repairing is such a big help as it can be overwhelming. I am preparing to "build" a coop here in the hot Las Vegas, NV heat and I am overwhelmed a bit, but I think I will ask a younger woman who is a dear friend & as capable as I was at her age, she will be such a big help. So happy you helped her. Now if we can get more young people in chickens & homesteading that would be fantastic.
First and foremost, build your coop in the dark shade and only get two or three hens.☀️❤️☀️
Becky, I think your attitute towards Nancy's coop was fine. The title might be a bit dramatic but you were complimentary about her trying to make changes and explained chickens are a learning process. I was impressed with the size of her coop as many people build very small in the beginning especially if they are thinking free range in the yard. One question, can the top wire be undone easily enough to encourage cleaning of the run a couple times a year? Laura

I spent Christmas week in the hospital because I was using peppermint oil in my home office and poisoned myself with it. I actually burned my esophagus and my tongue swelled. It might have been caused by putting the oil in my humidifier? Who knows but I think peppermint plants around the coop or hanging mint stems like you suggested. I have used those fly traps like Becky showed, but the smell is so awful, I couldn't stand it. Those fly traps need to hang further from the coop to draw the flies away from that area.

I loved this and what your doing Becky. I'm in the process of making my second coop. I lost one of my silkies to a skunk a few years ago and had no clue how it got in so I'm so determined to make my efforts pay off. I want my animals safe. I have 4 baby chicks and I'm preparing the coo and run now. I needed this to give me ideas. Ty

Building a ladder to the roosts is also enabling predators easy access to your flock. The whole reason chickens like to roost is for safety.
We have trained ours and it's so cool! We yell chuckchuck as we come towards the coop and they get all excited and come to us to be loved on before we collect the eggs and I've noticed less critters going to the coop since we have started putting scraps out in woods away from coop because critters will get full and not even worry about stealing hens or eggs. Also we have security cameras around our home that helps to keep an eye on my ladies coop. I absolutely love watching these videos; I always learn something new!
You talk about the benefit of having a chicken coop tall enough to stand in and then you make the run 3 feet tall with no door to get into the run. I doubt that she will be getting in there to do any poop pickup in the run, ever. Nice job cleaning up the coop and their food and water containers and nesting boxes. I wonder how long it will stay that way.

Great video! Very kind of you to take your time to help this woman. Chickens, owner, and viewers all win here..! I had to laugh at the comments at the point in the video you had to tell the lady to not touch the roosting bar you were cutting. No one seems to understand the loud noise a circular saw makes. These saws can really kick back on the user. I think your reaction was inline with the potential danger that could have occurred. The woman was obviously ok with that reaction. Danger sometimes needs a loud command to avert the threat of harm. I'm a real fan of your channel. 😁👍😉

A good multi sized sand for the bottom of coop. No straw. This make for a good clean up of Pooh & drainage. That wire will not keep out animals & snakes. Hardware clothe needs to be installed on any open area. Also baring around perimeter of the coop the hardware clothe & sharp gravel under the coops walls & run area. Rocks around the sides of walls. Nesting boxes you can put a little mat under it so you can pull out & clean it better. Also curtains in front of the nesting boxes gives some privacy if you walk in on one roasting.

I lay down a heavy duty tarp in my coop and layer it with fresh hay once a week (deep clean once a month) to deep clean I just pick up the whole tarp and dump all the crap (lit) it into the manure spreader...so easy to clean lol

Nancy, my Rhode Island Reds are 4 months. One is already laying, and the others are showing signs. In the video you talk about feeding them enough, I noticed mine dont eat all their feed a day. They free range, and I give them free range scratch, AND layer feed. As long as they are happy, shiny, and laying, can I be assured they are getting their nutritional needs met? I keep being told they are laying early, but they are super happy and healthy looking so I think I'm doing ok. Just want to be sure
If they're free range then they will be eating plants and bugs that they find. That should be enough nutrition x

OMG 😂 I was literally laughing my ars off 😂, this is so typical, old farm yard coop 😂 I have a friend with a coop that would Trump this one 👌 😂 she has about 3 sheds Tetrised together with plywood additions. It's literally like a maze, the floor is like walking on the moon from the layers of poop from years of not cleaning. My eyes were watering so bad from the stench 😛

I don’t know why ppl are commenting that the helper is being rude to the owner... she’s being direct without being hateful, she’s honest and even complimented this owner for what she did right. AND more importantly this coop is filthy, nasty even to the point this owner admitted to knowing her birds were eating their own eggs... regardless if this is for chickens, the owner should’ve done her homework about coop protection from predation, appropriate feeding and caution when mixing various breeds of birds!

Animal Keeper, hi there, we don’t know if Becky was being paid. I don’t think so, but even so the chicken owner obviously needs to learn how to clean the coop and take care of her own responsibilities, the chickens. Sitting in the house with the AC on isn’t going to do that. If you don’t want to put in the work you shouldn’t have chickens. I’m not trying to be mean but it doesn’t look like she can afford to pay someone to care for them for her. If she cleaned on a regular basis her coop wouldn’t have looked like that. Plus she didn’t have a clue about raising them. It was a good educational experience for her.

I really love how you are trying to help and it is an improvement but I noticed some things that you said that are fairly misinformed. 1. DE should never be used as a mix in where chickens are going to dust bathe. It acts as tiny razor blades which is how it gets rid of pest bugs. It will over time seriously compromise a chickens respiratory health. This has been confirmed through chicken deaths and following necropsies. 2. That coop and run is fine for around 10 birds. It’s not WAY too small for 12 birds. Guidelines are 4 sq ft. Per bird in coop and 10 sq ft per bird in run. 3. There is nothing wrong with collecting eggs from the back. If your hens are used to it then they won’t care that much. It won’t stop them from laying in the boxes. I’ve collected eggs that way and never had any issues whatsoever. That all being said I still feel like you are very nice for helping her out.
No DE is perfectly safe. DE is in some tooth paste and products like bisquick. You are misinformed☀️❤️☀️
No I am not. It is safe to eat not inhale. I have used it for years for many different things. Do you take dust bathes in bisquick? And toothpaste is in paste form not dry powder so that is completely irrelevant to what I posted. The reason people use it on mites and to eat to kill intestinal parasites is because it’s microscopic razor sharp particles. When accumulated in the lungs it can do severe harm and has been confirmed to be the cause of death by necropsies of chickens who had it in their bedding. You can argue it’s safe all you want but the facts are facts. You shouldn’t be inhaling powder, especially something like DE and neither should your chickens.
@@amechelb food grade DE is fine to use in moderation. Too much DE can cause lung issues but you would have to use it often.
@@BeckysHomestead Diatomaceous earth is a fine powder - try not to breathe it in. Gail Damerow, in "The Chicken Health Handbook", suggests that particles of diatomaceous earth can stick to chickens' lungs and create respiratory problems. However, it's known that it is crystalline silica, not amorphous, which causes respiratory issues.

Becky I have chickens myself. They are doing great. I am one that if I touch any part of my coop I wash my hands when I’m done. I have been hearing a lot about home coops having salmonella problems. Question 1. What to do to prevent it. 2. What are sign that you may have a problem. 3. What are some natural antibiotics that a person can use. Thanks!

Is the Chicken-Mama gonna climb INTO the dirty run? Crawl on her hands and knees to clean it out? Breathe in chicken-poo dust (not the healthiest idea), she would have no quick way to get away from? Then handle the mess twice, once to get it out and again to haul it off?
I realize money saving was part of the equation here, but imho, buying taller posts and wire fencing would be a good place to spend what you must, for the comfort of the chx-mama.

Hi Becky, What does the white powder that you sprinkled all over the coop do? Also what is the stuff yougave her for flies? We have a farm here in Davie, Fl. and the cows attrack a lot of flies. Had chickens for years... and my chickens had PLENTY OF FOOD ALWAYS AVAILABLE... eventually, an egg might break, and chickens may then start to eat eggs periodically. It happens. It does not necessarily mean the chickens aren’t getting enough food or protein.
I wish Becky lived in TN and would come and see my chickens! I am a first time chicken momma and watching her videos have been my life line for raising these babies! Thank you

Great! I Do not have enough roosts/ perching places... Great video. Do you know what is safe to put down for 3inches of ICE? I hate ICE... we get lots and lots of ice..... It is time to pull out 12 nets boxes and replace a 8foot wall with perches... So happy about this video.. great job... thank you both.

I have nest boxes that I access from the outside just like that. And my hens laying in them don’t appear startled. Of course I’m not trying to sneak up and startle them. I get most of my eggs in them with the occasional laid on the coop or run floor

So I have a decent size hen house to keep them out of harms way. I want to build a yard for them so they can free range but I am worried about them flying over the fence. How tall should it be to keep them in place. Most of my flock are Barred Rock and they are good pretty calm but some do like to jump and fly

I use a plastic bucket for nesting boxes. They never get dirty. My chickens love them.
About 24 minutes into the video you put a white powder type of thing on the coop floor. It looked like flower. QUESTIONS for YOU: What was that powder and what the the purpose of using it?

Diatomaceous earth (food grade). It’s used to kill insects, helps keep your chickens mite free. Be careful when using it not to inhale (and don’t let your chickens inhale it either)

I never had any problem with the lid being opened on my nest boxes, but I always announced myself to the hens...just gently talking to them as I approached and opened the box. It didn’t even bother them when I would chase a broody hen off the nest. I could even collect eggs from under the girls with no problem. I will say that the Ameraucana I had was not as calm as other breeds, but even she was used to me opening the box.
I hate chicken wire! It is really the worst...weak wire, lots of bare edge points to scratch you, and always sloppy. Love the fencing you put up!

It was so nice that you could go to Nancy's and make some really good suggestions and helped her put them into place - it didn't have to be a huge cost - everything was practical.
